Vin, if I may call you that. I am glad your making a stand against this tasteless music. The musicians sound like they don't even know how to play. There song was boring. It was a song about Alcoholism. The Glass Prison was the Bottle. I'm really confused now. Please help me to understand why you head kept jerking around during the music? Were you having a seizure? You then started bobbing your head viciously, that's probably was why you couldn't hear the song. Now I'm 68 years young and I've been around enough to know what my eyes show me. And you sir are mistaken. This is the one time you better listen to your wife, because she's making you look like an Idiot. If you have an ounce of Taste in your brain you would be going out and buy all the Dream Theater DVD's you could buy. And it's Prog Metal, not Progressive Rock. These musicians in this band are at a Purple level, that's Top Tier. Every time you listen to DT on these reaction vids, I notice how much you love them. You definitely like John Petrucci the Guitar player. And you were head bobbing to all that music too. So go sell your opinion to someone that is blind, cuz your sir.. Loved It ! to the max.

Dream Theater often out paces the average listener, The complexity of their compositions and their godlike proficiency on their instruments are unequaled. I would love to see your reaction to another DT song maybe - a change of seasons, octavarium or panic attack. Also hey from Maine ! fellow Mainer here.

    • @MetalRob81

Being obsessed with Prog I must say this. DT are great (although there are so better Prog Metal bands, imo) but to say their godlike proficiency on their instruments are unequaled is a bit ignorant, imo.
There's so many Prog Metal bands that play insanely well and some of them are much better songwriters as well.

@@ysfawolfpack well for starters I never said there were bands with superior chops to DT. I said there are bands with just as good of musicianship.

      Paralydium
Black Fate (Gus Drax) who is basically a JP and a Jason Becker clone.
Secret Sphere (much better songwriters, imo)
      Symphony X (just as talented)

Portnoy was briefly the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold after The Rev died.

  • @sumonjamal1653
    @sumonjamal1653 3 года назад +5

Mike Portnoy (drums) wrote the lyrics, co-produced the record, and did some of the vocals w/ singer James LaBrie. It was Part 1 of 5 songs (each in a subsequent Dream Theater album) that Portnoy wrote (and dedicated) to AA and their 12-step program.
From what I gathered, Mike Portnoy struggles w/ OCD and reportedly did try to manage it w/ alcohol. One of his compulsions is he gets bored on one musical movement... he kept pushing the band in more diverse directions when jamming & making music. When DT came off tour in 2000, things were not good when he and the band started work on new music... James LaBrie was allegedly not as involved around that time, and Portnoy contemplated getting a new lead singer.
At some point, Mike Portnoy got help from AA for his alcoholism, and took steps to manage his OCD... he was inspired to create a double album of DT songs, which John Petrucci (guitar) and Jordan Rudess (keyboards) had ample music for. The 2002 album 'Six degrees of inner turbulence' was a very chaotic album - it included a 40+ minute epic about mental illness.
Thankfully, James LaBrie came thru vocally in the studio and subsequent tour... so the band was tight again for a while. However, the album 'Six degrees' was very polarizing at the time... fans didn't expect Pantera-style riffs on a Dream Theater record. But at that point, Mike Portnoy was in charge of creative control, and Dream Theater was musically creating exactly what he wanted in the studio.

Not a bad song very interesting. I’m 68 and lived through the 2 best decades of music. Had a 8 track in my car, started off with a bu ch of 45 rpm records I got free. My dad worked for a vending company and when the records came off the juke boxes the kids of the employees got them. It was in the later 69s that I discovered album rock and my life was changed. The 70s took all the lesson from the 60s and expanded and divided them into all the genres of rock. Keep digging into the 70s for the more esoteric groups and albums. Example is like Bo Hannssen, Ambrosia, Loggins and Messina. You will find all kinds of jewels that need to have the newer generation exposed to.

Vin be trollin. The video don't lie my guy. You were boppin around all over the place. This song is ridiculous, in a good way as Sori said. Couple of highlights, the opening guitar solo is just complete insanity, the harmonizing part coming out of the main solo is fantastic (bass, keyboards and guitar all in harmony on that lead part). The crazy drum polyrhythms on that final verse coming out of the solo. One thing I will not praise is Labrie's vocals. Its gotta be tough when the rest of the band is on that level, but even when Labrie was at his best (Awake, Change of Seasons and Images and Words) he was only just good, never great. And time hasn't been kind on his upper register at all. Setting aside the musicianship aspects on an individual level, you have to be amazed at how they evolve a song as it unfolds. In the commentary on the Scenes from a Memory DVD, Portnoy calls it the shrink and grow method, once instrument will grow to the foreground and the other instruments will quietly shrink down to the background. You can hear this in effect as they trade solos but also as they reintroduce musican motifs throughout the song. As an example that crazy intro solos from Petrucci reappears multiple times throughout the song, but the melody remains the same. Its slowed down or sped up or on different instruments but its somewhat omnipresent. Love it or hate it, its exceptional song writing. Vin may be trollin but he does make a point that this sort of music just does not appeal to some people. Its very challenging music and it really makes you think, and thats not something everyone wants out of their music. Also, long ass songs.
Anyways, that's all. Just wanted to let Vin know that I see him, he ain't foolin no one!

As pointed out by many, this is part of Portnoy created "12 step suite", with the beginning (the static) actually a continuation of the previous album's ending, (which is another story in itself.) While a "blind" review has it's place, a lot of work actually calls for a quick overview which might lead one to understand the work MORE and enable a greater appreciation through a greater understanding of exactly what they're listening to. Lot of DT would support such from this work and 12 step suite, to Change of Seasons, and so on. Not to mention it's one of those where one could listen to it 10 times and each time hear something they didn't get last time.
I'd agree as well with someone who mentioned "The Great Debate" as something that might be of interest (lyrics I'm sure endless discussion), but that's another one similar to above, knowing the story behind it first. (Great Debate both sides of argument are panned left/right in the mix, and song itself not a position as much as simply an overview...imo.....but haven't read the lyrics in quite a few years but was always my interpretation as I always focused more on Portnoy and Petrucci lol)
Another interesting note about Portnoy and his issues (and songs about them) is (if I recall correctly) he's been clear it's not "preaching" as much as him simply telling his OWN story...
The above being said.....I was surprised at the final ratings (11 and "a masterpiece") given a first listen and no initial knowledge of the backstory. Nice to see it recognized as such. Sometimes takes people time and multiple listens to consider it such ;)

This is the first part in Mike Portnoy's 12-Step Suite. There are 5 songs covering his journey as an alcoholic to sobriety. The next song is on the album after this one and the song is called "This Dying Soul." Now that you have done the first song, it would be cool if you did all of the 5 songs. The third song is yet from another album and is called "The Root of All Evil." The fourth one is called "Repentance" (in my opinion the most beautiful song any artist or band has ever written) and the fifth song called "The Shattered Fortress" which has musical flashbacks to the previous four songs. It would be epic if you guys could do the other 4 songs in this epic suite, in the order I listed them here. Preferably studio versions. This was an awesome reaction, even if your hubby had mixed feelings about it 😉

I think Vin is mistaken by thinking these guys are showing off. I think I've never come across a more down to earth and a professional guitarist than John Petrucci. (There are for sure more that are close or as professional as him but probably not many) His great detication to his art and what he does is done for the sake of the music they're making/playing. For example before gigs he locks himself in a room for approx 5 hrs to do warm ups and brush up on solos that he hasn't played for a long time especially if they are very complicated. On stage his priorty is the music not looks. He for example has a ramp in front of his effects to put his leg up in hard solos to mimic sitting down so that his instrument is more stable. (Also that's probably one of many reasons why I've never heard him or anyone else in the band play a wrong note live) He also has the guitarstrap way up wich is the better for you when playing, not like some guitarists that almost have their guitars touching the floor just to look cool. The thing is all these guys go all in when making their music and what they do is done for the sake of their music and nothing else. The problem is that because their music is Prog Metal it's kind of expected to have crazy solos, many time signature changes and long songs. If they were for example a blue grass band they would also go all in and not do anything crazy or something that would not fit the style of the genre just to show off. 😊

I agree. Showing off or "wank" as people like to say, applies to something like Rings of Saturn, not Dream Theater

Vin: I'm not much into prog
Also Vin: In the Passing Light of Day is my album of the year...
That's the beauty of prog, it has so many different flavors. DT can be a little bit too much for some people, although I'm still sure you can hear songs from them you'll love (As I am I think he liked?)

Dream Theater have earned the right to do whatever they want to do. They’re not withheld by a record label. They have sold millions of albums and they bought their freedom and created they’re own label. Props for them to be able to do that. Since then they have created pure progressive metal the way they want. And whatever message they want. And they’re message is a good one. Lifelong fan and I’m so happy for them. They’re messages and Wisdom have influenced my life and countless others. 🤘🤘
