They are the E.L.P of the 2000s, and this shows off to the max their instrumental virtuosity but like ELP they also have some amazing storytelling ballads like ‘The count of Tuscany’ that you should listen to.
You'll love The Count of Tuscany and Octavarium by Dream Theater. These are not just epics. They are beyond epics that will take you on an out of body experience/journey.
I saw them earlier this year and Count Of Tuscany was their encore song… what a performance too.

Without doubt one of my fav songs is "The Count of Tuscany", the last track of the album Black Clouds, and the last album with Mike Portnoy that was one of the most creative members in the band. Miss him a lot in DT.

This is without a doubt my favorite band of all time, and in my opinion also the greatest. NO ONE can outplay these guys! Their music has literally changed how I look at music, both as a fan and as a musician myself. This particular song is basically the benchmark for intricate instrumentals, with time signature changes virtually every measure or two (with most of the musical elements never being repeated). However, as great as this song is, it is literally just a brief musical interlude in the middle of what I consider the greatest concept album of all time, "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory."
All of Dream Theater's songs are epic, but there are a group of songs that are considered by their fans as TRUE epic masterpieces...most of these songs are rather long (to most non-progressive music fans), and are usually the showpiece songs on whatever album they were recorded for. My personal favorite is a song called "The Count of Tuscany" (which is also my favorite song of all time), but other examples include "A Change of Seasons," "Octavarium," "Illumination Theory," "In The Presence of Enemies Parts 1 and 2," and "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence." If you would prefer to get your feet wet with a few shorter songs, I'd recommend "Pull Me Under," "Take the Time," "Under a Glass Moon," "Lie," "The Dark Eternal Night," or "Forsaken." All of these songs will also give you the chance to experience the remaining member of Dream Theater...vocalist James LaBrie.

I bought their first album in 1989 and the musicianship blew me away. I was also at their first Scottish concert in 1993 and wow...these guys could play. Still a fan in 2022, what a journey. Oh and i'm posting this before i even watch your reaction.

Hi! I just watched your Dream Theater video. It was my first experience with them. No idea why I think I've ever heard them before, but YES, YES, YES, I will listen to much more. Oh, and I liked your style so I smashed the subscribe button.
I have been following them for the past year or so and I believe they are incredibly talented, they know and understand music and the way the write their songs with so many time changes it really captures your attention. In my humble opinion they are the very best at what they do.
I have been a fan of them for now 30+ years and still going strong, The Count of Tuscany should be next because it´s magic.
There are good bands, there are great bands, there are incredible bands, and then there's Dream Theater.

Yeah, more Dream Theater would be great. There's only one thing i would suggest: pick a live version! You will find beauty and interesting stuff in all of their songs (and they cover a wide range of different styles and musical complexity), but seeing the Band performing it live with their incredible skills makes the whole, already amazing experience even more fantastic. Keep on rocking, thanks for sharing, cheers.
Most of them are Berkley School of Music graduates. The drummer, before joining DT was a Drum Professor at Berkley!!! My two favorite DT songs are Systematic Chaos and Lie. All the songs on their newest album are awesome!!!

You would love Liquid Tension Experiment - When the Water Breaks, or any other song by LTE which is basicaly Dream Theater with a different bassist and without a vocalist
You should also react to their earlier live version of this song with the original drummer Mike Portnoy. It's from their live in New York show called Metropolis 2000.
Everything is better with Portnoy ... saw them 10 times with him, and 2 weeks ago was the 8th time with Mangini. Both are great drummers, but watching MP live was always fun, his input into the band was extreme, especially for the fans writing different setlists during a tour just not to repeat the same songs.
Nowadays they have 1 setlist and play it throughout the tour. Mangini is just a machine behind the kit, no interaction with the crowd ... the sad thing about DT is that James is getting weaker and weaker and we really thought about going again, but after 2 years of corona, I think 2023 will be the year with as many as possible concerts, at least 1 per month, maybe 2 🤘
I LOVE Mike Mangini. The best replacement for Portnoy, IMO. But........the Dance of Eternity has a different feel with Portnoy. It is hard to explain, but Portnoy just makes it better.

It’s hard to pick a favorite dream Theater song. I love so many of them. I suggest Pull me under. It’s on images and words which is basically dream theater’s first album which was 30 years ago. It’s their first single they got played on the radio and one of the only ones that ever was but it’s amazing

I strongly recomend to anyone to take a look to the Dream Theater live at Budokan. It is extremely well recorded, both sound and video and you can see all the "vulgar display of power" and virtuosism that they have, and is also a very rich and delicious collection of songs, and includes the "Instrumedley" which is just astonishing. Congrats for this discover Sabina!!! Enjoy DT. Cheers
I got to see their 20th anniversary tour for the album this song is on (Scenes From A Memory). They played a one hour set, then the *entire* album, then a 30 minute encore. I cried :')

It serves as the interlude to Metropolis Pt 2, and it flows seamlessly into One Last Time. I'm glad I got a chance to hear it played live in its entirety a few years ago.
Love that so many people are still discovering Dream Theater! There's never been a band quite like them, and they're still putting out great progressive music to this day! (But I do think that their best work was in the '90s, of which this piece of instrumental genius was released.) And yes -- I too get goosebumps from that final section. It's just so distinctively Dream Theater -- epic, experimental, futuristic. They have more than earned their place as one of the greatest prog bands in history. In many ways, they remain peerless...
I learned about Dream Theather 20 years ago when a guy selling CDs spotted me looking at soime covers and told me "I am sure you are gonna LIKE this" and handed me "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory" which includes this unique song. God was he right!!!

I think it was Mike portnoy that said if you want to get someone into dream theater listen to the album Octavarium.

Although this is not my favorite song from them, you can notice the enormous creativity and technical perfection. They are the absolute top in this perspective.

I saw Dream Theater on their last 2 tours, the first of those (2020) was a 3 hour show which they played an hour in support of their at the time new album, and then the last 2 hours they played Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory, which Dance Of Eternity is from, in full as part of a 20th anniversary celebration.
The second time I saw them (this year) was in support of their latest album, A View From The Top Of The World. The title track is 20 minutes long. They also played The Count Of Tuscany as their encore song (also clocks in around 20 minutes). This is a highly recommended next song to check out from Dream Theater. Guitarist John Petrucci wrote it after a visit to Tuscany where he met a random person that took him on a guided tour of an estate and told stories of the heritage of the land, he started thinking he was being kidnapped and would never see anyone again, until the man reassured him he was free to leave whenever he wanted.

"The sound of metal in they year 3000." Yeah I can see that. This was my first listen too; it kinda sounded like a medley instead of just one song. Those guys can really play, I would've gotten totally lost. lol
And I forgot: If you liked that, check out "Instrumedley". If that's not self-explanatory, it's a medley of most/all of their instrumentals they played live a while back. Usually that's the one people recommend for first-time reaction videos.
I wanted to delete this music of my head so I could have such experience listening to it for the first time again. This song is a master piece!

This is a great one because it takes sections of all the music that came before it on the album and alters it, destroys it, and builds upon it. Kind of like how the beginning of Beethoven's 4th movement from the 9th symphony teases ideas from the previous 3 movements.

There is only one adjective to describe this immense band and these extraordinary musicians: AMAZING!!!! Do you realize the super complex scores they play, the super odd tempos ... and with that skill they play? huge !
It's also important to listen to this whole album -- as there's some context in how it flows through the album to this song to the end.
Sabina - if you're impressed with the drumming; that's not the original drummer who wrote that part and he's playing on a set with a completely different layout. And he's playing every exact note perfectly as written. (btw, they finally got their first Grammy this year. A very long time coming.)
The precision reminds me of Emerson, Lake and Palmer from the 70s.

Dream Theatre are not your average band..they always go the extra mile for the benefit of their fans. This concert/tour is a great example of that. The fourth wall is an imaginary wall that separates the story from reality. The term has its origins in the world of theatre where the three surrounding walls enclose the stage while an invisible ‘4th wall’ is left out for the sake of the viewer…typical DT cryptology. Visually stunning with critical emphasis on production. Sabina…you looked blown away with what is an example of the ultimate live performance. That’s how Dream Theatre leave the audience..blown away. I’ve seen them live and can vouch for that. Great choice Sabina..I loved it.
This song is probably their craziest but they have so many amazing songs. A good start would be going through their album "Images & Words"

DoE is a crystal mirror reflecting scenes from Metropolis Parts I & II to tackle it without all that context is brave! Listen to both Metropolises to hear this beast in its context, then react to Dance again ;-) BTW, the "Part I" was a joke, sorta "😀haha like we'll ever do *that* again" but nine years later the joke became their best album!

Metropolis 2 is as close to perfection as i have ever found! Dream Theatre are all individually and collectively about the best musos on the planet today.

This is quite a ridiculous instrumental, but more important is that it belongs to a concept album Metropolis Pt. 2, probably their best work
whats great about this is that while you are trying to digest what you just heard they play 7 other things to digest waiting for your ears to catch up
DoE is legendary, it is one of a kind. Next you should take on Count of Tuscany, it is a fantastic journey through a wild story.
These guys are masters of timing, transitions and visual excellence.

I would actually recommend "The Spirit carries on", just to let you see the width of what those guys can do.
I think you will find it difficult to understand how their music is. Unless you're really a complicated music researcher, but if you succeed it's really an amazing thing

Scenes from a memory is their best work, maybe the best album of the history of 220v music.
