Hey I was at this show! The conductor is also the composer of the intro to Dream Theaters self titled (False Awakening Suite) and the 3rd movement of their "Illumination Theory" (same album final track). The Orchestra played spectacularly for their part (last 5 tracks of the show). The choir shines best in Illumination Theory, Strange Deja Vu, and Finally Free as the original composition of those is written with vocals. Also the Choir and Orchestra were brought in by the drummer (Mike Mangini) as he used to teach at Berklee! This was an absolute thrill to see live and it was great to see your reaction to it!
Not sure if it's been brought up yet, but there are 108 total meter changes in this piece. It's a super crazy, technical track, but once you've had it rolling through your brain for 20 years like most of us longer-term DT fans, it comes as naturally as riding a bike, lol. I definitely recommend some of the other pieces from this performance if you want to get a better idea of how well the orchestration and choir are implemented. In particular, Illumination Theory is basically their marquee piece from the recent album they were on tour for at the time (this stop being at the Boston Opera House) and if you can sit tight for the full 19-ish minutes then I think you'll be able to to appreciate how this type of arrangement works much better for a band like Dream Theater than say, S&M ever did for Metallica. There's even a section about halfway through where everyone except the orchestra drops out, just how it was written and recorded on the actual album. Thanks for the video, though. I always like seeing people's brains try to figure out what the hell is going on when they hear these particularly complex DT pieces, lol.
There's an old live called "Score", if I remember correctly it was for their 20 years, it's in New York City and there is also an orchestra in the second hald of the show and the sound is great, the balance is really nicely done and you can really ear this orchestra. Check this out if you're interested !
Lovely stuff. There are a lot of bands in the last few years done gigs with orchestras, but one I wil recommend to you personally as I think you will dig it is Styx's collaboration with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra Of America. As the name suggests this is some old farts (Styx... I can say that as an old fart as well!)) working with young folks between the ages of 6 and 18 (if memory serves me correctly). It is truly joyous. You can see the admiration of the band for the young folks and the sheer delight of the young ones watching the band run around entertaining whilst playing instruments. I think it is still my favourite band/orchestra shows due to the happiness on everyone's faces along with some wonderful arrangements. You can find some of the songs on You Tube. Whether you decide to do a piece on it is up to you, but you should check it out even if only for your own pleasure. Kind regards.
This will probably never happen but you should go back and re-listen to this song as it leads into the next song. It almost feels like they have no seam between them. Really beautiful.
I loved that you had a “what the f is happening “ while listening but you had also the clarity to analyze. This song is essentially a medley and the original recording is in their “Metropolis pt2:Scenes From A Memory” album. The whole album is a masterpiece and this piece is a medley of the musical themes of the album. Probably the most complex piece they have written.
There are so many time signature changes in this song. In my opinion, it's one of the greatest displays of unity when it's shown off live. There's no quick way to learn this song. It takes ridiculous amounts of practice and cohesion as a band to pull off.
Great video! I have seen other reaction videos, but it's great to see someone react to incredible musicianship from a composer's perspective. Great job so far. Keep up the good work!
"Octavarium" or "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" are two of the best Dream Theater songs. And they both have a wonderful mix of orchestral and "rock music".
Was that 'boogie woogie' in that one little keyboard section? Amazing musicianship.....yes, the unison passages are incredible! Sophisticated Prog Rock at its finest. (the 'wall of sound' is like Genesis on steroids) The orchestral integration was flawless both in the writing and the performance. This must had their attention. MY MIND BLOWN!
@@andrewbroughton65 I was a little confused by your response since I thought they were virtually the same. Here is what I found to share... Discussion: The two main differences between ragtime and boogie woogie is that ragtime does not have a walking bass and the melodies tend to be less improvised. ... Also, honky tonk has a weaker base line that is a steady beat, while ragtime has a more demonstrative base that bounces up and down between two prime notes.
This came from a great show, called Breaking the Fourth Wall. It was shot in Boston, with the orchestra and choir coming from Berkeley School of Music, celebrating the band's 30th year. As you may or may not know, Dream Theater got its start at Berkeley in 1985 where Petrucci and Myung (who had been friends already) met Portnoy. I was lucky enough to see Dream Theater in concert from the 1st row just in front of John Myung. In a 3 hour show, my ears didn't pick up on a single mistake! These guys are nothing short of amazing, even to a non-musician such as myself.
There's a certain magic about the concert you're watching right now. It was filmed at the Boston Opera House. Dream Theater are all Berkeley alumni... except the keyboard player... He's all Juilliard. The orchestra and choir are from the Berkeley School of Music... Can you imagine what it would be like for those kids in that Orchestra pit to be playing with legends that came from their school?
As a long time dream theater fan, I never really thought of this until now. It’s actually kind of funny. Could the name” dance of eternity” simply mean that it would take an eternity to learn how to dance to the song?😀🤓
They are a surreal experience. When I saw this band live, they had an intermission. That alone blew my mind haha. Not to mention the musicians. Being in the first few rows... wow. I cannot wait to see them again.
The amazing thing to me about Dream Theater generally - and this piece in particular - is John Myung! Petrucci is an absolute beast on his guitar - and everyone knows it! What seldom gets recognized is that John Myung doubles Petrucci's guitar riffs - fingerstyle! The pure hard work required to develop a three finger technique that can be played at that speed, with that much "dead-on-the-beat" consistency, for that long??? I don't know *any* other bass player that can do it! For that matter, most couldn't do it with a pick! Keep it up, though - I just recently saw one of your videos, and enjoyed it - as a musician (bass / guitar / vocals), would-be composer/arranger, and general musical fan, I appreciate your views :-) I definitely come from a prog / jazz / edgy-pop style - after looking at the videos you've done so far, I'll probably pop in a suggestion or 50 ... :-P
You should totally check out Liquid Tension Experiment’s new vid “Passage of Time” from their upcoming album Liquid Tension Experiment 3, their first in many, many years.
I think that there is a version of this on the Live at Budokan dvd that is multi angle. It is without an orchestra so it doesn't have the add reverb from the additional mikes. Being multi angle you can watch the band member of your choice during the whole song.
Celestial Elexir or The Architect by Haken. Is a mixture of metal, Jazz, cirucs music is the most amazing thing you'll ever hear. Is Dream Theater brought to the 21st century
Something I wish reactors to this piece knew before starting is that it's an instrumental interlude in a concept album telling a full story from first to last track, with reoccurring themes and a structure almost like a classical symphony (or maybe a movie score). It's hard to understand and appreciate it fully without listening to the full album. It's like reacting only to the bridge in a "normal" song.
It's inevitable that when you start reacting to prog on RUclips the prog metal nerds will come out of the weeds and request Between the Buried and Me... So yeah, you should check out Between the Buried and Me

this is serious amazingly good music. if I may, I would like to make a recommendation: in the netherlands there lives a bit reclusive a tall, cool and friendly dude, who composes and arranges excellent contemporary Prog Rock/metal. then he summons musicans and vocalists from all over the globe, records with them or they sent their tapes. james labrie from dream theater and floor jansen are amongst them. the result is superamazing. so I suggest to check out "Areon - the day the word breaks down" . the mastermind by the name of arjen lucassen sometimes watches reactions and comments them. have a great weekend. greetings from the krautlands.

The fact that you had no idea who and what you'd be reacting against, plus no idea where and why that was happening makes your reaction truly heartfelt, which is highly appreciable and makes your video worth listening to, because it's more of emotion than it is of teaching. Well done, but promise you'll get yourself into Dream Theater now
The next Dream Theater instrumental you should react to is Erotomania!!!! You will not be disappointed and I will guarantee you will need a cigarette after, even if you don’t smoke!!!!
This will probably be a random comment here. You should check out a Japanese metal super band Unlucky Morpheus! They're a group of friends who came together to cover songs from video games then began creating original pieces together. All of their songs are great, but from a composer perspective I feel you would greatly appreciate their song CADAVER/REVADAC. With the exception of the drums and lyrics, the song is played note for note forward (Cadaver) and reverse (Revadac). I recommend the sheet music video that has the notes scroll at the bottom of the screen 🤘😊🤘
I highly recommend listening to the entirety of Pain of Salvation's album "Be". It's a perfect example of incorporating an "Orchestra" and really making it an integral part of the music.
You're a Dream Theater fan now. Welcome aboard. In all seriousness though, I love seeing this kind of content from someone who clearly understands and appreciates what they are hearing. As for composition where the orchestra comes through better, you should probably check out Illumination Theory. That piece, as well as this, is from Breaking The Fourth Wall, which was performed at the Boston Opera House. But you will hear a lot more of the orchestra in Illumination Theory and, personally, I think it shows off more of the band's ability to write and arrange music.
I've been a DT fan since 92. Thanks for doing a reaction to them. Love their music. I find, however, with the advent of the internet and RUclips, there are many, many people that claim DT's music is just wankery. That the band couldn't write a decent song if they tried. It's just a million notes played in whatever chaotic order they please. I don't think that's true though. But I'm not a musician. I just enjoy the music. And they've opened up my ears to other bands I find enjoyable like Symphony X and Kamelot. Anyway, great reaction. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Been loving your vids! Could you do some tracks from The Mars Volta? Arrangements & musicianship on point* -- maybe... "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)" or "Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus" are good places to start* ~ like Tool, their entire discography is worthwhile, IMO
Here is the The Mars Volta reccomendation i was looking for, and after those songs maybe cover Day of the Baphomets by them, it's an absolutely mind boggling song.
I was at the filming of this concert. It was in Boston and the orchestra/choir was all from Berklee where several members of Dream Theater attended college. I think the new drummer may even have taught some there, I forget. Even though they mostly dropped out to form Dream Theater, Berklee still uses DT heavily in promotional material and likely inspires many students to attend, so it's no surprise to me that these players might be really into the material. This song in particular is notoriously complex and features literally hundreds of time signature changes. I will say, at the show the band was so loud that similarly to this video you couldn't hear the orchestra super well, but if you are familiar with the original sound of the material you can hear where they are augmenting all of the parts. On the official blu ray release they did a pretty excellent job with the mix so you can actually hear everything pretty well.
Well, I guess now you have to do a reaction to Opeth! Progressive Metal at its finest. Early selections will give you heavy growling progressive black metal, newer will be more clean with less growl and more focus on progressive technical playing
Jordan Rudess's little Rag-time piano break is one of my favorite bits in the tune

Keep up the reactions man. And don't be afraid to stop as much as ya want. We all want to hear your perspective. I came from your tool vids and now you're doing DT which are both heavy influences on my so, I'm excited to hear this. Cheers mate!
this song is from Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory album, I recommend you check it out
I'd never really payd full attention to this song, or maybe it's the live performance that makes it really come alive, but holy shit I was blown away too by DT, again...
This is definitely my favourite channel atm, keep the diverse selection coming!
Your passion for and understanding of music is infectious, and it's great to see someone else who processes music with their whole body haha.
DT brings back some great memories for me, what a band!
This is from the album "Scenes From A Memory" I highly suggest you listen to it on your own from start to finish. It's an amazing concept album. I'm sure it is on youtube.
I'm 50 , and DT is still my favorite band since 1992
They have fans of all ages (ok not babies) , and from all over the globe.
My 9 month old has liked Dream Theater for a few months, does that count?
I do DT karaoke to get him to sleep sometimes.
@@framebadger I have twins, they're a couple of weeks old now. I suppose it's a good time to start introducing them to DT? ;-)
@@RudyBleeker always a good time. Congratulations. I hope you don't have to Wait For Sleep too much.
Fantastic video as always mate! As a middle-aged man myself I appreciate your take on all of this. Cheers!
RUclips: You might like this video.
Me: Correct! Well done RUclips.
Great work dude!
So the choir and orchestra are for another song, as I'm sure you realized later on.
Orchestra definitely playing on this one. You can see the conductor, well, conducting 😉
Cool, thank you for your comment 🤙🏽🤙🏽
If you like Dream Theater you will LOVE Rush!
i am sure this man already knows about Rush. I am only in my 20s and i know about Rush!
Wow! I don't think I've seen anyone react to this AMAZING rock composition. This is awesome! Thank you!
Yes - Close to the edge LETS GOOO
YES is most def on the list! 🤙🤙
No..it was honky tonk ragtime ..from His Scott Joplin influence.
Snarky Puppy works with an orchestra in songs like "The Curtain" and "Kite", among others. It is well balanced from my point of view.
The Curtain is an absolute master piece!
That is so cool they called up the Berkley team - what a memorable experience for sure! 🤙
BABYMETAL does an homage to this classic with its Tales of the Destinies, which overlaps changing time signatures and adds vocals and dance.
Keep it up, though - I just recently saw one of your videos, and enjoyed it - as a musician (bass / guitar / vocals), would-be composer/arranger, and general musical fan, I appreciate your views :-)
I definitely come from a prog / jazz / edgy-pop style - after looking at the videos you've done so far, I'll probably pop in a suggestion or 50 ... :-P
Thanks Grady 🤙
You should see Felipe Andreoli, a Brazilian bass player
Got to see these guys do this whole album live in Minneapolis a few years back. Easily the best show I’ve been to. Absolutely incredible.
Was this 2019 for the 20 year anniversary and release of distance over time? If so, I went to the show in Milwaukee Wi
@@dissonantharmonic Yup. Hell of a time.
Yeah, Nightwish should be on this channel for sure. The composing talent of Tuomas is out of this world.
Celestial Elexir or The Architect by Haken. Is a mixture of metal, Jazz, cirucs music is the most amazing thing you'll ever hear. Is Dream Theater brought to the 21st century
I think if you want to go Haken from a composing perspective that Cockroach King or Messiah Complex would be a great listen
@@lvr3039 honestly cockroach king is pretty weak compared most of their other songs
Great reaction, though. I really appreciate the video.
Man, this is great. I cant praise this channel enough. Love it
Glad you enjoy it!
Dream Theater does NOT get enough Attention from the "Reaction" People. So Thanks.
First video hearing a technical display of knowledge on music from the tool video got me. Instant subscriber! Keep it up old man loving it
It's inevitable that when you start reacting to prog on RUclips the prog metal nerds will come out of the weeds and request Between the Buried and Me... So yeah, you should check out Between the Buried and Me
i would also recommend opeth. they are amazing.
Vitalism would also be another good one
You know both the bassist and guitar are both named john, right? I love seeing professional musicians reacting to this god tier band.
Just one tiny correction: they are not "world class musicians". They are "multiverse class musicians"....
And James LaBrie.
@@fredmachine of course. My comment went for the entire band.
@@DaniTheDawg I know. Dream Theater are multiverse class musicians, and then there's James LaBrie. Who, uh, isn't, at least not anymore. And before the rabid DT fans go wild, it's a joke. Even though you know it to be true.
I just stumbled onto your channel. I've got to say thanks for a GREAT reaction to Dream Theater. From the day Images and Words came out and I heard Pull Me Under over the radio (when stations played their music) I was hooked. Their talent instantly jumped out at me. Complex repeatable performance, meaningful lyrics, unison synchronized tempo changes on the fly... I could go on. Great video.
"Purple level" I was actually thinking of videogames when he said this, ha ha. like a bunch of games lately have had their top tier armor highlighted purple in the item menu.
You been playing too much Minecraft
@@NedJeffery No, I was actually thinking of Assassins Creed Odyssey, God Of War, and Borderlands 3, but I just remembered that in those games Purple level was the second highest level, and gold level was the highest. Ha ha, oops.
Dont u worry my friend.
I always feel "OLD GUY" when i listen to this tune since day one it was out.
"Oh shit!"
That's the reaction we all had, my bro.
Yes man! Thank you so much for looking at this!
Search the chilean group "Los Jaivas", the song "La poderosa muerte"
I'll check them out! Thanks 🤙
Yeah, please do. Los Jaivas are the quintessential progressive rock band from Latin America, with lots of cool sounds, awesome musicians and great composition
Buena weón
I see you trying to count the time signature; good luck! Great video, great reaction. If you want to see more orchestra in Dream Theater (and more prog greatness) check out their live performance of "Illumination Theory" at the Boston Opera House.
this is serious amazingly good music.
if I may, I would like to make a recommendation: in the netherlands there lives a bit reclusive a tall, cool and friendly dude, who composes and arranges excellent contemporary Prog Rock/metal. then he summons musicans and vocalists from all over the globe, records with them or they sent their tapes. james labrie from dream theater and floor jansen are amongst them. the result is superamazing. so I suggest to check out "Areon - the day the word breaks down" . the mastermind by the name of arjen lucassen sometimes watches reactions and comments them. have a great weekend. greetings from the krautlands.
God that laugh @ 6:40 looked soooo spontaneously unholdable 😂😂
astonished ✔️✨ yeah that's how we all felt hearing it for the 1000th time even
DT forever
I like how you call yourself “old guy” but yet, I’ll bet you’re around the same age as the whole band. I’m an OG myself and DT is one of my absolute favorite bands.
I understand that this is one of the most complex songs in terms of time signatures.
Love it!! One of my favorite DT songs.
It's time for you to get into some "Nightwish" ..probably wanna start with "Ghost Love Score - Live - Wacken Open Air"
Or Instrumedley!
Good to have somebody's POV out from the fan circle or familiar ears to Dream Theater. That honesty at the max buddy. Keep it up
6:38 that's the only reaction I want people to have when I show them any DT song
Dude. Same.
Never forget that both Johns (guitarist and bassist) went to school together. They know each very well when playing.
"I plan on doing the pot tomorrow" Haha yeah I would like to do that too but i just moved to a new city and dont know anyone here
i feel you. i've been scraping resin for a few weeks. all my buddies are hundreds of miles away.
*Tool - The Pot you're welcome.
Reaction to music from a composer perspective from an "old guy"? instant like and suscription
Try out some Opeth or Gojira.
Those are the creepiest stuffed animals I have ever seen
@@slayde7740 Yeah would love to see Day of the Baphomets. That song is just batshit crazy!
Morning rise is still one of my all time favorite albums.
Hey man nice reaction video! I was at that show and it was filmed for a dvd! It was in Boston and the Orchestra and Choir were Berkley students!
