That abrupt ending is actually how it ends on the album.
Alex at first I thought that my Apple Music was broken😂
Scoopski haha I had a similar reaction the first time I heard it 😂
Yeah, and I hate - hate-hate-hate-HATE - those sudden abrupt endings. I thought Type O Negative's were bad, but this one I especially hated.
I hated it so much that I did a bit of copy-n-paste editing and created extended outro to faded out (resulting in a 9-minute duration for the song). Perhaps I'll go back and work on a way to make the abrupt ending work, like with some echo or reverb or something. Abrupt endings are the worst cop-out for a song ending ever. Paul O'Neill once critiqued the fade-out for "not having the creativity to make a formal/proper ending", but just cutting it off is even worse - it's sloppy and lame. If i wanna hear songs cut off like that I'll fill a cassette tape to capacity where the last song doesn't quite fit.
Like the end of Hamlet's life...
Well the next song on the album cuts it off I believe like a album being taken off the player
This is the song DT became popular with. They were betting on the ballad "Another Day", but, suddenly, this 8-minute song was taking into radio rotation instead. Iconic song since then.
Balls and chunk.
"Take the time" is my favorite from this masterpiece album. The vibe is insane.
I really like that one too but i always enjoyed Metropolis pt1 the most.
Under a Glass Moon one of the most underrated songs in their catalog.
One of the most complete albums in terms of great songs from start to finish. No stinkers, all killer, no filler. Even The sexaphone-infused ballad Another Day is awesome on its own merits.
Fun fact, this album won MetalSucks' March Madness a few years ago, going head-to-head and beating Master of Puppets, Rust in Peace, and many other masterpieces. Says a lot about the awesomeness that the fans gave it that kind of love.
@@toddwilliams8128 Another Day is incredibly deep!
"Surrounded" is my favorite one. Starts so mellow, peaks, and settles back down so beautifully.
@@HollowGolem yeah man I love that song!
Porcupine Tree:
1. Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
2. Anesthetize
3. Trains
4. Blackest Eyes
Yus
Yes indeed. 1 and 3 for sure. And the lead singer's collaboration with Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth: 'Storm Corrosion', title track 'Storm Corrosion'.
American Made I love Opeth!! Not too much of a fan of their jazzy infused albums over the past few years but everything they did up through Watershed is complete gold.
@@-LOST-eb5xz Totally agree. I'm partial to classic Opeth myself. :)
Anesthetize has already been done!
The album “images and words”is a masterpiece 🤘😊
This song is based on Hamlet. It's about destiny, honour uncertainty and vengeance. Most the lyrics call back to his to be or not to be soliloquy on the ambiguities of death and what lies beyond. He's basically questioning whether he should carry out fate and kill his uncle and inevitably die aswell. Sooo he basically becomes desensitised to death, satirically mocks life for its deception and deciets and embraces death for the finality and ultimate purpose it holds. Great song
The idea of not having control and the world leaving him behind refers to me of the oaths of the feudal age with honour overriding freewill. And the classical idea of fate. The Moirai spinning the wheel of life or the wyrd in Anglo Saxon belief. Where all control is with the Gods which mock and torment the living by forcing them into their destiny
Dream theater-the glass prison
gigantour 2006 version, is awesome!!!
@@danielgomezmonte9239 I'm from germany, but I saw them in Dallas on that tour that year. With Megadeath, Symphony X, Fear Factory and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Missed Bobaflex tho.
Good suggestion, another one being "Constant Motion" from their 2007 album Systematic Chaos
Dream Theater - The Glass Prison!!
fuck no
What a song that means more to me today for some reason.
I can't remember the last time I click that fast for a reaction in this channel xD
Good ol' DT. I'm glad you did this song, it's a cult classic among us progheads. Images and Words is such a magnificent album overall.
This album definitely marked a new era for progressive metal. It influenced a huge amount of bands that came after Dream Theater, and to this day, I believe it is considered among the best Prog Metal albums of all time.
It's definitely my favorite DT album by a decent amount (6 Degrees and Awake round out the top three).
"the bass drum is kinda Tooly" other way around, Vin. Also the song cuts like that on purpose. The lyrics are based on Hamlet and Macbeth. If you know it, you know what the end symbolizes.
I'm surprised he didn't compare them to his Metallica...he does that with other bands especially if the band is...Megadeth
The song that made me a Dream Theater fan. I remember hearing this back in 93 or 94 on Heafbangers Ball.
Andrew Brorherton I discovered them the same way😊👍,Headbangers ball just miss it.
My first time hearing this song was the world premier on the headbangers ball the next day I went and bought the tape been a fan ever since
I heard them first on headbangers ball as well.
Same here, but it took me awhile to appreciate it the way it deserved. Now it's a masterpiece with no bad songs!
The song intentionally cuts off like that, because part of the song deals with how sudden death can be. The sudden ending of the song is just like an unexpected death of a person.
Another explanation is that it was inspired by The Beatles’ Abbey Road side A ending, and MP explains that the melodies are building up and it just “pulls the carpet out from under you”. When asked about the abrupt ending while at a drum clinic in Atlanta in 1999, Mike Portnoy explained “We had all this tension, and it just kept building and building, and we had no idea where to take it, you know? So we decided to just pull the plug on it, like The Beatles did with She’s So Heavy.”
It's entirely based on Hamlet. So yeah you're right about sudden death. Just meant to be more performative I guess
@@archaeorobbo These are not my words, these are entirely words said by members of the band in interviews. So i believe they tried that on purpose.
@@stavrosp2032 mhm and it does sound interesting but it's more of a secondary thing when the ending fits extremely well within the context of Hamlet. And where the play ends on the death of Hamlet. Thanks for that information anyway
Ohhhhhhhhhh
I've always thought this as well. However, I've also read from an interview with Mike Portnoy that they just didn't know how to end the song, so they just did it this way.
In interviews the band confirms that the sudden ending is meant to symbolize how sudden and unexpected death can be.
I always thought they just didnt know how to end the song, so they just ended it.
@@movietimeateds69 It's also influenced by a Beatles song that also ends abruptly
Hey Dream Theater, I like how the sudden ending represents the suddenness and inevitability of death.
Yeah, that's what it means, for sure....yup
-Dream Theater, probably
We need you guys to do more DT please. One of the best bands ever.
A nightmare to remember
Panic attack
The count of Tuscany
Glass prison
These walls
Dark eternal night
The Count of Tuscany!!! That opening is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I always get chill bumps!
ugly list
The spirit carries on - dream theater
They would love that...
... and i think it would make Sori cry... lol
I am so glad you finally got back to dream theater
Treva Land i agree
DT has such a huge library. Make them Mainstage!
You need
Pain of Salvation-The Perfect Element
Between the Buried and Me-White Walls
Steven Wilson-Ancestral
Riverside-Deprived
Dream Theater-Trial of Tears
Soundgarden-Limo Wreck
I'd wanna see the first two more.
Oğulcan Yolcu White Walls \m/
React to Dream Theater - Endless Sacrifice
Yes
Yeah that or "this dying soul" ^^
So good
Oh yes. Their finest work.
Panic Attack by Dream Theater is a badass song I know y'all will dig.
fuck no
Sounds like Muse--Hysteria rip-off
@@CoolAsianGuy I fail to see your name on their channel.

EPICA - Kingdom of heaven
Now look up the O'Keefe Music Foundation kids covering this.
Why haven't more people" liked" this comment...the children are our future of metal and i we need to promote them as much as possible!!!
They do some good Iron Maiden covers as well.
@@twiedenfeld your damn right they do! ☺️🤘
They also covered 46 and 2 and it was amazing.
And they covered Metallica's entire Master of Puppets album
The song is slowed and the pitch is changed. Seems kinda weird haha
I felt the same thing... very odd.
It's to avoid copyright
@@jessea4438 but the version they are hearing is the correct one, right?
@@IvanVallebona Maybe, IDK. I hope so
The heck are yall talking about, this is the same pitch as the album
Why would people not request The Great Debate? Best Dream Theater song for a classic political Vin & Sori analysis/debate
...with one of my favorites guitar solos from John Petrucci!
Yes, that one would be great.
right? whatdaaa???
Epic song
That song would spark a great discussion between them!!
Metropolis pt 2 album react, anyone?
Anathema- Internal Landscapes live in Universal Concert Bulgaria
Anathema- Untouchable live in Universal Concert Bulgaria
Untouchable, please! Both parts! Most beautiful song ever.
Pull Me Under should always be the first Dream Theater song people here, it's their most accessible and still prog.
Two DT songs to react: A Nightmare to Remember (heavy) or The Best of Times (emotional).
Very first song I heard from Dream Theater, back in '92. I was in the Air Force on a TDY, and as soon as I got home from the TDY I went out and bought the cd.
Dream Theater the Best Band of the World
I agree
Agreed
Vin you fucking love this and so did I. Cause I watched you love this. This will be my every DT reaction comment, past and future!
The song was written by ex member Kevin Moore (keyb) and it’s about the play Macbeth. A Scottish play which has a link to the original band name Majesty and the logo (Mary Queen of Scots) reference.
Isn‘t it about Hamlet?
Peruvian Skies - Dream Theater
Yes, really great song with meaningful lyrics
And one of best Petrucci's solos!
Voices and Scarred, also Learning to Live...2 Amazing Epic Prog Songs...Quintessential Dream Theater
my favourite band ever!
Moonspell - Full Moon Madness
Moonspell - Night Eternal
i thought it was the band called moonlight eternal...
Metropolis Part 1. It's one of their most iconic songs
Yes, but for some reason I don't think it would be of their taste.
@@davguev You never know.
That whole record is amazing! Try learning to live it is AWESOME!
"kinda Tooly" Uh No Dream Theater was 5+ years before Tool ...
Iron Maiden - Phantom of the opera( downlaod 2013 live).
This needs to happen!
Masterpiece
Influential song. I prefer the Beat Club version, 1981 I think. Yeah its Paul, not Bruce, and just Dave and Adrian without the new guy that I can't remember his name, but we get to see Clive a little, no Nicko either. They're young too, the way I remember them. New guy adds a guitar and that makes it harder to tell them apart. There's another early version with Bruce that I like too. I wish they would do some comparison videos, this one would fit. A Priest song, maybe Victim from the US Festival and the Seminole Hard Rock. Maiden and Priest were two of my favorites as a teen in the '80's, there are many videos done 30+ years apart and the songs are great, seeing and hearing how the bands have grown and changed, priceless.
This song takes you to a dimension which is not easy to escape from.
Dream Theater are the best prog band.
Love this song. As others have noted, it played slower & lower than hearing it direct from the CD, but still a great song. This was how I got introduced to DT, and am still a big fan.
I'm just waiting for you guys to listen to them again.... Please do "Voices".
The lyrics on "Voices" and "Scarred" are incredible. I wish John Petrucci would write like that again...
@@KyleS.1987 2 of their best songs for sure....And there's a ton of top tier DT songs
I never really got into DT except for a couple songs. This is one of them.
Chris Tolson They have MANY more, just saying...
Octavarium will change your mind
@@louiegarcia1848 I'll check it out!
I would love to hear Vin's interpretation/ reaction to Voices or Scared off the Awake album.
Indeed, they have a lot of songs with deep meanings
Great songs
@Sebastian im thinking more from a lyric standpoint. Eritomania is a cool tune but no lyrics. Silent man is anti climactic when next to voices. Imo. That album as a whole is still one of my favorite albums of all time and still my favorite DT album.
nevermore live'' what tomorrow knows, garden grey''
I love that album.
The Sanity Assassin
The Hurting Words
Godmoney
Finally Dream Theater!
Octavarium next!
Song is based on Hamlet, from Prince Hamlet's perspective.
2:53 We need to turn this up. It should always be on 11 with DT
Lyricist Kevin Moore refers to Shakespeare's Hamlet, as told from Prince Hamlet's point of view. The lyrics allude heavily to the play, echoing Hamlet's desire to give in to his urge to gain revenge for his father at the cost of his own sanity. Over the final moments of the song, James LaBrie can be heard singing the song's only direct quote from the play: "O, that this too, too solid flesh would melt". Therein, Prince Hamlet is pleading for escape from his mortal trappings.
Dream Theater are not really known for their lyrics, but I absolutely adore their lyrics. Their one liners are just out of this world. So many in this song. Favorite one is from Metropolis “I was told there’s a miracle for each day that I try”
I cannot wait for you guys to hear Wuthering Heights. Such an underrated band.
"Panic Attack" is my favorite of theirs
This song, in concert, is unbelievable!!!
Enjoyed your Hamlet, hadn't heard it related to Queensryche n Dream Theater, such a fun analogy
I don’t mind some Dream Theater every now and then. I recall when I first discovered them I went on a spree and got several of their albums at once and would listen to them constantly. I kinda grew out of listening to them as I started to listen to the more extreme end of metal but I’ll still spin Scenes From A Memory every once in awhile.
so who slowed this down? the video was this way, or you guys made it sound like this? it's both lower in pitch, and slower in speed than the real version.
This was my intro to DT. A syndicated rock station called Z-rock was on AM 1480 in NY at the time. They started playing this. Today, they're my second favorite band.
He was pulled under, " Hence the sudden end" This is how it is on the album.
Takes me back to when this first came out baked out of my kind in my buddies basement with 2 15in. Subs it was crazy awesome those were the days.
I just saw DT live at Oulu, teateria 18.1, it wast single-handedly the best concert I´ve ever been to. Still recovering from the show :D :D
There’s also a quick reference to the parable of the sparrow by The Venerable Bede on the fleeting nature of life.
The best band ever imho
Tool wasn't a thing yet when this came out, but if you want to hear something from them that had obvious Tool influences, try "The Great Debate". The subject matter of the song will give you a nice long video as well.
Dream Theater formed in 1985 and Tool in 1990, so just a few years apart. Pull Me Under came out in 1992. Both are great bands with preeminent musicians.
@@meanhe8702 But tool didn't release Undertow till 1993 which is their first real album.
This is a challenge. I dare you both to listen the song "Octavarium" by Dream Theater. If you two want to listen it, prepare yourselves for something beyond music :)
YEEEEES!.....i still LOVE this Song after all these Years !!!!!!...best PROGRESSIVE METAL Band ever !!!!
Most definitely try “Take The Time” OR “The Great Debate” if you like the thought provoking lyrics 👍
Cannot go wrong with either!!
Dream Theater - In the Name of God! Cracking song
They have already done this, do a search
Count of Tuscany by Dream Theater if you want an Epic journey! It gives you a taste of everything they are capable of!
You should be reaction at wits end by dream theater.
I really like the latest record!
GREAT SONG OFF A GREAT ALBUM. LOVE THIS JAM. COOL VIDEO TOO
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
my favorite album
Absolutely LOVE this song from the first time I listened to it to my last 😉 Thank you for your review
An excellent way to start the year! Thank you!
I suggest Wait for Sleep/Learning to Live from the same album for a future reaction. Cheers!
Beautiful song
Images & Words 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾 1992 the band that opened the doors to Prog Metal/Rock !!! Kings X too🤘🏾
This version of the song is slowed down, or did they slow it down for copyright reasons? 🤔
Syrinx Defector likely for copyright reasons by the uploader
I didn’t notice
The pitch is also lowered, eckh.
I just wrote a comment on that. I noticed.
I mean... I love DT, one of my favourite bands, but this edit made LaBrie's voice not worse. I prefer post 2000s LaBrie voice to his 90s one.
This is the guitar tone I chased for over 20 years.
Iron Maiden - For the Greater good of God
@Geralt Of Rivia That's not true, they are just playing catch-up right now because they got behind and have a large backlog.
I've never clicked on a reaction so fast! :D
Their latest album is pretty fucking amazing, let me tell you
I remember reading that they didn't find a good way to end the song, so they just "pulled the plug" like the Beatles did in one of their songs.
If you want some softer and more emotional prog music, I definitely recommend Steven Wilson, the former frontman of Porcupine Tree. Especially Drive Home and Routine are great songs and also come with great videos. They're both known for making everyone cry when watching them for the first time.
@VinandSori Dream Theater has been around since 1985 and Tool was around Since 1990
Best song from the best DT record
its somewhat slowed down and slightly lower pitch. but you guys get the idea of how it is supposed to sound :) More Dream Theater and Opeth please :)
Yea that's slowed down and tough to hear if you've heard the normal one.
Yeah because you’re singing it or playing it in your head but it frustrates you because it doesn’t match. Really unsatisfying
This version is slightly slowed/pitched down. Not sure if it bothers you guys, but I've been listening to this for like 12 years and it slightly bugs to hear it this way. I swear it's not the same song ;P
My favorite DT song
New video segment , Vin &Sorri read Shakespeare! It would be epic , and have Progmetal and black metal playing in the background for the different moods
Vin's timing with his headbanging is funny to watch... the prog is tricky when it comes to odd time signatures.
The first time I heard this on the radio I literally took my car onto two wheels turning and accelerating to the mall to buy WHATEVER THIS FUCKING SONG WAS. This was the most goddamn mindblowing thing to hear on the radio in 1992.
There's tons of material from Dream Theater that you haven't even touched. There are so many great suggestions. I suggest that you two keep exploring more Dream Theater and discover just how great, epic, and mind blowing these guys are. They also have an instrumental side project called Liquid Tension Experiment. Check out Acid Rain live in LA 2008. This is instrumental jamming at it's best!!
My favorite from Dream Theater are: In the name of god, take the time, and peruvian skies
@VinandSori I don't know how you can assume that dream theater drumming sounds like tools music when dream theater has been around longer
React to Dream Theater - "Take the Time" from the same album
Has anyone else noticed that the sound is pitched down from the original speed? It is perceivable to those who are familiar with the original recording...
Dream Theater - Endless Sacrifice
I always remember hearing the first album when it first came out. I think I first heard it in Shades a HM record shop in London. They would play the latest release Images and Words took a good few years to follow mainly thanks to Derek signing them Images and Words was my favourite DT album for a good few years. Had the privilege of seeing them both nights at the Marquee in Charing Cross. Good memories
Does no one know that the reason the song ends abruptly is because on the album there is a sudden transition into the next song. It’s a great transition but I hope no one thinks that it’s a serious mistake or whatever
OMG. It took you this long to get to Dream Theater?
Nice 👌🏻how about some Baroness? You have not done them yet 😉
You should really do Ashes from Threshold... I think you will enjoy doing that one...
