Mariah took singing to a whole different galaxy! Every young songstress since this debut album owes their success to Mariah.
She got number one singles before this but after this spectacular perfomance, her debut album skyrocketed to No. 1 and stayed there for 11 consecutive weeks, then became the best selling album of 1991 in the US. It was a huge step for her from a "chart-topping studio singer" to a "all-round vocalist"
Jean-Noel Jabagi Nah it’s okay hahaha. Her performances from 1990-1997 were the best like If It’s Over at Grammy’s 1992 and for concerts, 1995 MSG and 1996 Tokyo Dome.
Her debut album was released in June 1990 and it'd already had two #1 singles by the time of this performance, but it was only after this night that the album went #1 for the first time and stayed at the top for 11 weeks starting in March 1991. "Someday" also peaked at #1 that same month. I love the fact that this legendary performance had such an impact.

One of the best Grammy performances ever. I don't mind that there wasn't a standing ovation at the end...remember, this was a crowd of established, older musicians listening to a completely new artist - hell, many of them probably didn't even know her before this night! But the whistles and shouts from the audience (probably the general public in the far-off seats) showed that she had ARRIVED, and that's what makes me happy.

I don't know. But I feel like this is the "real" Mariah. The ditsy, blonde, materialistic persona she adopted in the late 90s,though entertaining, just doesn't seem like the real her. The irony is she wants to be free to be whatever she wants and not controlled and so rebels against any boxes that people like her first husband tried to put her in, but she ends up adopting a side of her that is not completely her. Early 90s Mariah was pure gold. I hope she knows she could still be a huge star if she let her guard down, dropped any facade she may have, go back to pure ballads and R&B, ditch the pop music and reconnect with her 20 year old self and heal. There's a depth to her she's hiding. The extreme version of her persona was that TRL ice-cream moment when people thought she had gone insane (and to some degree she had) because of the trauma she endured around that time as well as growing up... But she should know she is strong and let go of whatever anxietys, fears, self-esteem issues she's probably had all her life... and know that she's loved just because we love her and can see the real her beyond the glitz and glam blond bombshell/bimbo? shtick.
