Nobody has ever sang this song live with the same arrangement of Mariah's best performances, especially this performance : breathy vocals, transitions, runs and so on. That's the case with pretty much all of Mariah's songs, so it's no surprise...

I worked with Mariah and let me tell you she can sing her vocal range is off the charts. Remember she has been singing since she was a child she's used her voice so much that after awhile it takes a toll. Mariah is a legend. By the way she was very nice to ALL of us.

I always love the way Mariah uses her hands as if she’s conducting her voice as it flows out of her in the same way a conductor would with an orchestra.
It always felt like she was adding some sass as if she's talking to you with the lyrics.
I remember they made jokes bout that on the radio bout how they should tie her hands together to see if she can sing without putting that hand up..
She calls them "spasms" lol She really did in 1 interview. I miss that Mariah

In a way that's true. It helps her 'visualise" which notes she's singing next. It's pretty nifty as a singer and a lot of vocal coaches employ this method to help students sing!

During my adolescence, I'd wait until I was alone in the house and sing Mariah Carey songs at the top of my lungs. I would try to hit all the high notes, imitate her timbre, melisma, and runs, and probably sounded like I was being murdered, but I loved it! This song is still one of my favorites of hers. It's even better knowing that she wrote it about her relationship with Derek Jeter.

No one will ever be at the level of Mariah Carey in her prime, even though 1997 may not be her prime. Just see people trying to sing this song or her other songs... Even simplifying the arrangement they all sound like a karaoke singer in comparison, I can't say the same thing about any other vocalist. And then when you also realize that she also wrote and produced all her music since day 1. GOAT. Periodt.

Her ability to easily throw in riffs and runs in high belting voice without it sounding too shouty/technical will never cease to amaze me. 🤯 it always blends so well with mood of the song. truly one of a kind.

True artists would usually try to perform a different version live to give a sense of variety. After all people listen to the recording versions too often on the radio and what not. But, I get your point. Just for me, if I pay to watch a singer live like in a concert, I expect them to come up with something different. We all know she can sing, theres no need to prove.

But I think what they're trying to say is in every other live performance of My All, Mariah dodged some of the high notes so this one was the closest to studio version 'cause she hit them all. After all, Mariah proved her musicality from her covers, her remixes, her nuances (e.g. Chain of Fools live), and her improvisations. She even wrote a song on the spot live one time. But I completely get what you mean, just saying.
Search for her Japan live version. Slightly better than this
Yes. The only existing recorded version closest to the studio version with the presence of all the high belts at the end. But still, it didn't capture the finesse and smoothness the recorded version has.

Mariah and her team needs to officially upload all her Saturday Night Live (SNL) performances that she did from 1990-1997, especially this one. All her SNL performances were a vocal beast.
The belting at the final chorus is the blueprint of what vocal performance in a song is all about.
I cant hear nothing other then a legend singing. She is a and always will be an artist of the highest calibre with beauty to match.
In the 70's the melodies were plane and dry. In the 80's it evolved a great deal, however in the 90's it was polished and perfected. In the 90's there was a lot of heart & soul in all genres of music. The 90's vibe was completely different. Mariah, Celine, Whitney. Golden years of music. The best melodies, music & songs ever created were in the 90's. We'll be lucky to experience another decade as rich in Music History as the 90's.

I think this is not only the best performance of my all but the best performance of Mariah, because she not only sang a song 100% live from her album with the hardest songs, but didn’t dodge a single note from the studio version.

Though I agree that this was an incredible performance overall and commendable due to the song's difficulty (as with all her songs), I don't think this is her best performance ever. There were some sloppy runs in here (0:49 and 0:58) and she also dodged the low note at the very end. Otherwise, this was perfectly executed. She has cleaner performances like Can't Let Go SNL, If It's Over Grammys, and Joy To The World 1994 (Not the St.John's one).

If people who dont understand music... this may be one of the hardest sings to sing. Tone, pitch, falsetto flip back to normal pitch, to chest to low register... just fucking sing it! This song is so hard to sing. It spans a huge range, includes a variety of very technical singing skills and ends in some insane belts. It also requires intense breath work as well as precise phrasing. There is a reason why nobody ever tries to cover Mariah songs.

Every time I hear Mariah singing I discover something new that I havent heard before, she manages to bring so many different tones and musical notes in fractions of seconds. Its a delight to notice all the vocal changes and how she play with her voice in every song. She born to sing plus her voice with her beauty and personality, just perfect!!

Perfection! One of my favorite songs
Watching this 27 years later and I'm so proud of Mariah. She gave the absolute best performances of My All (SNL) and Butterfly (Letterman) in her hometown in that period - it's really very touching. She is an unbelievably talented woman.
The sound on SNL is always so unforgiving. Yet Mariah shines brighter than anybody.
