My neighbor's teen-aged son and I worked part-time at a big brand store so his parents asked me to bring him home after work.
So often on the ride home he often heard carole king's music being played because as a Gen x-er, I grew up on carole king's songs.
So during the Christmas season, while playing carole king's Christmas cd, he asked me for some of her cds since he liked her voice becaue it calmed him down
So that Christmas and every after , he always gets a different carole king cd for Christmas from me and it's really a joy to have the opportunity to expose a new generation of people to the beauty of carole king's music.
    Peace.

One of the first times I met Carole at a party, we were sitting around just chatting. I told her I was surprised to be having a conversation with someone who wrote, or co-wrote, some of the songs that kind of helped define our generation. She smiled and said, "I am just a fireman's daughter from Brooklyn".

Being a fireman's daughter from Brooklyn (her mom was a teacher) helped her write this song. Before air conditioning, people in urban places like Brooklyn would climb on the roof to escape the heat. BTW, she is a genius -- she entered kindergarten at age 4 and skipped first grade.

When this old world starts getting me down
And people are just too much for me to face
I climb way up to the top of the stairs
And all my cares just drift right into space
On the roof, the only place I know
Where you just have to wish to make it so
Oh-oh, let's go up on the roof
At night the stars put on a show for free
And darling, you can share it all with me
    I keep a-tellin' you
Right smack dab in the middle of town
    I've found a paradise that's trouble proof
So if this world starts getting you down
    There's room enough for two
    Up on the roof
    Up on the roof
    Everything is alright,
    Up on the roof
    Oh, come on, baby
Come on, come on, come on, now darling

She is amazing and so talented. And she could call on her best friend James Taylor...which was her real true love...
And forget about Carly Simon singing about Warren Beaty in her song, You're so Vain...No, no, no...That song was about her ex-husband James Taylor!!!
He was such a good looking guy, my mom bought his albums, and we live in Belgium.
Now I'm in my fifties, I consider Carly as an Icon, Carole King as a monument and James Taylor as a has been...His Son is a good musician...but little, oh deary me the one in the middle, me no like. J. Taylor can kiss the floor that he had good friends. And if it weren't for Carole he would be 'nothing' today...She is a rare talent and per bestie James T. Was never more than mediocre.😊

Carole wrote the music for all her songs and many of the lyrics, but Sedaka only music-so no collaboration there. Also, King has never commented on any so-called relationship. From Sedaka's book, it seems more like a one way infatuation.

      *breathe.
Yeah I agree. I love his Bottom Line August 16th 1975 version the most. He did the song apparently only 7 times.

Laura Nyro did record a beautiful version of "Up On The Roof" and release it as a single, but she did not write the song. It was written by Goffin and King song like most of the songs on Tapestry. Laura had a lovely voice with an incredible range and she does deserve more recognition.

Carole King and Gerry Goffin-music and words. I read somewhere that the song came to them in a taxi on the Brooklyn Bridge. Also, one of the Drifters said they kind of laughed when the "small white girl" came into the studio to tell them how to do the song, but in five minutes they were all listening carefully.

Use to be, yes very nice. Made lots of money. Sold many records recorded by the Differs. Now I see the world like Nuclear Doomsday up on the roof or where ever won't matter
