I watched a concert where Carol King while playing the piano and James Taylor while strumming the guitar sang "You've Got a Friend". Both were old already, probably in their early 60's.
I am 73 . When i was in the German Hair Force Army in munich that time i heard them evereday on AFN Radio. And today once a week i must hear it. Just for my soul

Her voice is lovely, but--in my humble opinion--that's not really what makes her so excellent (many others surpass her in sheer vocal ability). It's the songwriting and the emotion.

There is nothing "raw" about either of these talents. They were both very sophisticated songwriters and musicians even at this early stage in their careers.
“Raw” doesn’t mean unsophisticated or unRefined. It means nothing but talent. Period. No visual enhancements like lights, lasers, dancers. No auto-tune. No cadre of background singers. Just a piano, a guitar, and two great voices.
Feels like new singers wants to be different from everyone else instead of playing on their strengths. Music just needs to be sung and performed without pushing personal agendas. At the end of the day, we want the art not the artist yet this sentiment does not resonate to younger audience. They are more into the personality rather than the music they create. To be fair, most "artists" overflowing with personality does have very little musical talent to show for. Still, it is lamenting that my ears have been constantly plagued by tasteless music wherever I go.
This is what happens when you write and sing songs from the deepest depths of your soul. No flashy vocal runs intended only to impress, this cuts right to the bone. Timeless.

The "doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore" lyric is so candid and heartbreaking. Makes you think of someone who you love so dearly but just passed through your life.
They buried my mother's ashes in northern Michigan today, where she was born, during the Depression. It's mid-way through the second year of the pandemic and I just turned fifty, here at home, in Canada. There's no reason for me ever to return to the US. Tell me about far away.

I'm watching this with teary eyes because this was my mother's favorite song. - She died earlier this year at 83 years old. It's "funny" how a particular song can make someone become so emotional. Anyhow, I know she is singing this along with me right now... just like how we would do so while we listened to it at home or during our family road trips back in the day. Good times indeed. RIP Mom

I was lucky enough to see her live a few weeks before Tapestry was released. She opened for James Taylor and played the whole album. I had something like 9th or 10th row seats. She was incredible.
Wow, like a dream come true. So fantastic to witness that. I always wished and hoped that her and James would be together always. I'm sure though that they are, in a sense.
Wow! You totally won the lottery on that one! Tapestry was the first album I ever bought. It was just under $5, and I remember my Mom being so upset with me because I'd spent so much of my babysitting money on it! Every song on that album was easily a #1 hit - all be itself. We saw Carole & James "in the round" at the Key Arena in Seattle on their Troubadour Tour. We know Carole has down the Tapestry Album concert over in Europe and are hoping we'll be lucky enough to see her do it one day in the US.

God....this song always got me right in the feels. And at 49 , it still does. Glad I was a child of the 70's with young parents. I got the best of their music as well as the 80's stuff. The soundtrack of my life is pretty damn awesome.
You and me both...but it was the guitarist playing with this woman, along with the likes of John Denver, Jim Croce, and Gordon Lightfoot that had a huge impact on me learning to play guitar as a teenager...
I miss my husband so much. He drowned in 2020 at the age of 49. I love Carole's voice, and seeing young James is awesome. I play the bass guitar, so all the aspects of this video really get to me. Thank you for posting it.

Made countless long trips to see my mama thru my life. When it was time to leave I would say "Don't cry, just smile and wave goodbye!" That's what she did from my college days on. Gone 10 years now. With picture of her on front porch, smiling and waving- RIP- Miss my mama.
Back when music was music. Her vocal skills are completely off the chart. No overproduction, just an emotional, stripped down song about separated people who love each other. So touching. My dad used to play Carole, Jonie, James, Gordon, Harry, Jim Croce. I tear up now every time I hear any of them sing.
It’s not just their singing but also their song writing and music. Thoughtful lyrics and great music background and supporting vocals enriched their music so much. This is why this music endures to this day. As all great music and their artists have survived.
I can't think of any new music I really like. It's all Beyonce/ Taylor Swift/ Lizzo (whoever that is) Kanye (ick) Katy Perry and whatever. I guess Billy Eilish is a talent... but not my style.

Yes, music now isn't even music. At least, popular music isn't. There is still good music out there, but it's not the popular stuff. I've listened to rare bands, local bands, etc., stuff that isn't well-know, and there is still some wonderful and amazing music being made. But the popular 'music'. Blech. Not even music. Just supposedly good-looking people dressed up is silly sparkly costumes, lip synching to garbage. You don't have to be talented, or be able to sing, or anything - all you have to do is look good. And even that's questionable, since a huge part of is is plastic surgery.
This music does not age and seems even more relevant these days. The Tapestry album plays every weekend in my garage when I am working on the car or out in the yard. Carol is so beautiful, talented, and still so important.

He reminds me of a young Dan Fogelberg, similar age & same era but Dan was only just starting in the music business in 1971.
Her voice is lovely, but--in my humble opinion--that's not really what makes her so excellent (many others surpass her in sheer vocal ability). It's the songwriting and the emotion.
This was my youth
Mr. Larkey's bass was a large contribution to the performance also.

Just raw talent. No flashing lights. No gyrating bodies. No dancers in the background. Just three instruments and one voice.
Exactly👌👌❤️❤️❤️❤️
BIG UP RESPECT !

Don't forget you also had goofy bands back then. Don't be blinded by nostalgia
good for you. ;;;;;
I agree 😎✌️❤️
Timeless.

Try to remember the good things and the fun and laughter you all had while listening to these very talented artists.
It’s not just their singing but also their song writing and music. Thoughtful lyrics and great music background and supporting vocals enriched their music so much. This is why this music endures to this day. As all great music and their artists have survived.

Carole has so many great songs. But this is my favorite. "It would be so fine to see your face at my door..." For some reason, that line really resonates with me.
Me too...sometimes with a little tear.
Being a truck driver, this song hits the heart❤️I love it.
I can't even tell you how many times I listened to Tapestry while laying flat on my back on my living room floor as a teenager in the 70's, singing along while listening to Carol King with my headphones on... pure bliss. ♥
How wonderful it is to view this fine rendition of So Far Away......while we remember just how long ago it was in 1971. So beautiful!
God it seems so hard to believe that music was once like this, and isn't anymore. That time seems so far away.
Music is great now ur a dinosaur that chooses to live in the past just say that lol but knocking today's music yes we not gonna do that sir
@@jimangler984 I was in my mid '50s when I gave up on modern music in the late 1990s. It seems that's a common inflection point for a lot of people in regards to modern music. I call the period after 1996 the non-musical era. It is not an era of musicianship.
@@jimangler984 incorrect, I'm not a "dinosaur" and there may be good music these days, but in no way is it as much as there was back then. Good music these days is a diamond in a rough.
So far away never to come back again.
@@mrsickwick I soooo agree with you !!!!
Beautiful simple music that tells a story. I can hear and make out the lyrics. Not a ton of instruments to clutter it up. True talent. No auto tune here.
God, give it a rest.
AMEN, YES!!!!

I am here on Mother's day 2022 because my mother loved James Taylor and this song is exactly how I feel about missing her. She died in 1997 and every year she gets further and further away and there's nothing I wouldn't do to have her see the grandchildren she never met, to tell her how much I think about her every day. This song drives me to tears every time I hear it because it's so genuine, so pure, it's everything I feel today and every mother's day when I am reminded of her loss.
🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
If there were a love button I would hit it for your comment!
For a son to lose his mother,I think is the biggest heartbreak we will ever feel. I know that's how I feel . She was to young to go. 52. I think part of my heart died that day for sure.🙏🏴
Im sorry for your loss. I’m going to go hug my mom and stay to talk to her for a long time.
Takes us all back; so sorry for your loss "calmputerconsult!" This video is decades "old", but still nice to hear.

Strange how this music is gone and all the good musicians who wrote these timeless songs are either passed on or just faded from the spotlight. The 70’s were a special time for me.
❤❤❤
Listening to her in 2022. I'm a 90 baby. Also a bartender by the grace of God. And at my bar i play the 70s. And whenever she comes on i have to stop and acknowledge her and this song. My entire bar freezes for one second in reality and it's beautiful. Thank you Carole for this song
Sounds like a cool bar 😎
Jim Croche's X owns a club in San Diego, but they cater to the pop that sells and never perform Jim's music anymore; He's son is quite good-makes periodic appearances though.

Glad to hear your bar has songs like that. Mine does to it is Danny's song by Loggins and Missina. People don't recognize it because the title is not in the song but once you hear the chores everyone loves it. I hope you try it out:)
Such a smile! And see, no Botox or surgery or makeup plastered on her face and look at her as she ages! She’s beautiful and always has been! ❤
My late Brother bought the album the first day it was released and played it over and over again all through the Summer.
RIP Paul. Gone but not forgotten.
Everybody did.
A Better time for sure. Fantastic artists. That was beautiful.

Tapestry is a work of art !! & never , ever grows old - that’s the mark of a true genius !! Carole King just a master piece !! 💙🎼
As a DJ, I met Carole at 105KITS -San Francisco in 1984. She was absolutely delightful and kind…so unforgettable!
Great performance!! Happy Birthday Carole! (Feb 9th). Today is 50th Anniversary of the release of her legendary album 'Tapestry'. The Rock n' Roll Hall Of Fame is the next honor for Carole King!
Well deserved
OH YES! HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAROLE!
Most "original artists" don't WANT to "sound like" the greats-they find their own unique voices.
Wonder if Carole ever reads her comments ? Paul Cantor said of Carol that she was one of the "most down to earth famous people he knew!" And I think that was before her song about the "earth moving under her feet??!!
There's allot of good music out there, if they'd just stop BLASTING it AT US.

I was 19 and now 71, still love those times!
I'm an African American and I cry today 2021 because when these talents past who can replace them...what an amazing artist song and gift to music!
I still remember being 9 years old and my mom would play Tapestry non-stop all day Sat and all day Sun. I fell in love with that voice was so pure and perfect.
Same...my mom did the same when I was 10.
Over and over and on and on and on while mom cleaned the house all day Saturday. The sun lit up the living room in upstate New York. And mom played tapestry on our long hi-fi stereo with radio and 8 track tape player and turntable
Me too. We had one of those all in one turn table stereos.
I was 9 in 71 too Mike, loving Carole way back then!
Fell in love with Carole's music in 1971. I was a senior in high school. Took my Tapestry eight track to college and wore it out that first semester. Her music still sounds just as good now as it did then.
Lovely ❤ Carole king is an icon and a beautiful soul ❤
One of my earliest childhood memories is listening to Carole King over here in Uganda in the 70's.

Tapestry is one of the very few perfect albums ever made. It was the soundtrack of my adolescence. Thank you Carol King.🥰
You truly appreciate this song when the people thats been in your life forever start passing away.
Wow, my exact sentiments!
They were better days then. Life was less complicated and folk were nicer. I miss those days. The world is so dark now.
Your so right , a lot better back then🤗🙏
So true!!!!
I was born in 76 and recall my parents listening to this and I am an older soul. I agree with you that people and times back then were way kinder and less dark. Music was mellow and peaceful as well. I like a large variety of music, but agree with you all on so many levels.
It's goin' to be (long) a long (time) time (gone) gone
But you know

Is always, always just before the dawn CSNY 1971
I’m 57 and miss those days. Was too young to experience them at that time, but have a glimmer of hope that those days will come back soon
She is part of the soundtrack of my youth.
Loved her then, still do.
That right there was three very talented people making amazing heartfelt music it's timeless it's timeless❤

I'm 74 , retired and navy veteran . We lived in the best generation for music and real talent. Carol King is a legend and so is James Taylor. I was listening to a song yesterday by Greg Lake ( E.L.P.) when he was 12 years old. " Lucky Man " . So many memories !!!
I first saw James Taylor in the movie " 2 lane blacktop " Does anyone remember what a sailcat was in the movie ?
I was 16 in ‘71. By ‘73 I was enlisted in the Navy. I had a jr. high and sr. High school sweetheart. I was from Sacramento and stationed in Norfolk. This song held us together for a while. Time and distance ended our relationship. But hearing this takes me back to high school.
This is very good, but early jazz beats 60s and 70s music rock. I can't think of a more impactful song than Strange Fruit.
Sorry, jazz doesn't come close. Not on the same planet.
Brings back memories of leaving home to join the military (USAF) in September 1971. This song was getting a lot of radio airtime then.
Thank you for your service Meljrnone; We dedicated " Flyin' in the Morning" to the AF
Think you might like it. Thanks.
