Yeah, apparently, a song about the kind of social situation, the upper class life that Carly herself grew up in. The beautiful young debutante daughters who went to all the prestigious colleges mostly to look for young, potentially rich husbands coming out into Society, launched by their families. So many, like the girl in the song, dreaded it, but that was the way it was, so she resigned herself to it.

I always thought she were a very attractive women. I don’t see comments about how a natural beauty she really is. Hey same here! I got so sick of "You're so Vain" which was played constantly for about a decade, that I lost track of how brilliant her composing and singing is. She's amazing in retrospect.
I've loved this song since I heard it...geez about as long ago as you....Then I probably had no true idea of it's meaning LOL but, It is one of my favorites of all time.
+Melanie Daniels That's usually very true. But I am fortunate to have a granddaughter with an old soul. She has a tattoo written across her, below her neck that reads, "This To Shall Pass". She's well aware the beauty she possesses today will not last. So every day is precious to her. It has to be because she's a model.
+bjcotton09 Don't tell her she misspelled "too." If she ever finds out, she could always have her tattoo artist add a "t" to the end of "to." "This Tot Shall Pass." It would be super-meta when eating tater tots. Or when pregnant.

She was always my fantasy woman. Shame she made bad choices foe husbands, one a heroin addict and number two came out of the closet after ten years of marriage.
@Barry White , You are absolutely correct! Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell were my two favorite "female" singer/songwriters. They are Luciferian-Baphomet/Reptilian entities. It's very evil, very deceptive and very sad!
You are so right! I remember watching this when I was ten years old on TV . This just mesmerized me then and still today. Was that Simon and Garfunkel before her performance?
I remember when I was literally girl I used to sit quietly and listen to this song and think about the future. And cry! And now here I am 50+ years later and I'm still waiting for it to be the way I've always heard it should be. 💚💛💙
We all strive for our dreams but nobody has all of them come true. Gods got reasons for that we don't understand yet. Just continue being your best you. :)
I was a young boy in the ‘70’s when this song came out, I wanted to marry Carly Simon and live happily ever after with her, she singing beautifully as we traversed through life…sometimes dreams will always stay forever dreams…so glad I saw this video tonight, it brought me back to happier times in my life
We are lucky to be able too say this is the music of our youth, you rarely see talent like this today. Stay safe, healthy and back by popular demand ✌️
At the time, leaving the 8th grade and going into high school the next month after this was recorded in August, 1971, I had no idea how this song was a warning to me...wow, had I listened closely to these words...
They don’t write songs like these anymore, ones that speak to the heart, soul, and life; we need more Carly, the late Karen Carpenter, and Carol King, ballards written so beautiful. Always loved Carly Simon music.....
Carly Simon is one of the most talented human beings who ever lived. She just steps in and turns a good song into a legendary song with her talented voice and timing. It's hard to believe that during the 70s people could enjoy Carly /Carole King/Linda Ronstadt/Stevie Nicks/Karen Carpenter/Joan Biaz/Emmy Lou Harris/Olivia Newton-John/Joni Mitchell / Diana Ross/ Judy Collins and many more. Year after year. Amazing talent. By the way, who do we have today??? I tend to forget.
49 years ago, sitting in my car, heading toward a divorce, I burst out crying when I heard "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be." I've loved Carly's songs ever since
It really is a great song that still holds up all these years later, too many RUclips commenters have an idea that life in 60s/70s/80s was something close to perfect, not at all.
I'm glad somebody mentioned Carole King. This is coming from a classic rock fan who's favourite bands are Pink Floyd King Crimson Moody Blues and Uriah Heep
Those long gone days of this music and it's authenticity will be missed forever. Thank the stars for vinyl and the impetus to record these real sessions.
Oh Carly....We love your song...We heard it and we got married it anyway and named our daughter Carly...35 years later...still married...still in Love...That's The Way I Heard It Should BE...We went after Love not perfection...Now it's 2020...We know this...we can still try to love each other and others in spite of the virus. Love Never Fails.
I remember first hearing this song. Even on AM car radio, it gave me CHILLS. The intensity, the clarity, the lyrics. Found out who, & bought album. Wow. NOBODY else could sing this song. And nobody has.
Such a devastating yet wonderful song. Carly Simon is a great talent. “ Their children hate them for the things they’re not; they hate themselves for what they are.” Wow.
@Ali The '60s yes... the early '80s sure but the later '80s/early '90s ehhh... there were moments/people but largely uhmmm... I don't know how to finish that. Don't get me wrong I liked the music but late '50s to early '80s then skip to the late '90s/early aughts had the songs that stay with me. Goes without saying I'm sure but this is just my opinion.
The good looks, the grooved-out fashion, the soft sounds w/ more than some exceptions, the lyrics that made so much sense, pure originality without hi-tech.......and the list goes on and on.
Melodically this is a beautiful tune, but don't forget that's it's also a song about how marriage sucks, which mindset has contributed to the breakdown of society that we're currently experiencing today.
A wonderful of example of "let the song speak for itself" - Performed so simply, no frills or ostentation, no ego or star trip evident, pitch perfect singing, she "allows" the song to just be there. That's greatness right there. Brava Carley Simon.
Spoken like a pro! Touches the far reaches of our soul. She understands pain and respects it. The love of music allows her to reach out to trillions of us. Gentle and bold Carly!
This song hits me where I live every time I listen to it. I was 15 when this beautiful song was released and I was introduced to the angelic tones of Carly Simon. Her stunning beauty, her youth, her passion epitomize a time that I feel blessed to have lived through and continue to hold with heartfelt fondness. Underneath the flawless performance is what the song has to say about life - not just married life. The lump in my throat is genuine. The true mastery of this song and performance still resonates more than 50 years later. Thank you so much, Carly…
Thank You; was Familiar looking, but, i couldn't place the face talking to Art, and it was driving me nuts. Yes. George. Thanks. Would that have been a show to be at, or what? Wow, what a time.
I remember going to a James Taylor concert when I was in High School. My girlfriend and I were sitting right in front of the sound system. But little did we know that sitting behind us was Carly Simon. We just stared at this beautiful woman, with big hair and a hat. It wasn’t until James Taylor introduced her as his wife that we realized who she was and that we were sitting next to a rising star. That really made our evening being that close to her. She had the greatest smile! The music in the 70’ s were the best! Nothing today compares to the 70’s.
One of the most unique voices there will ever be, "NO ONE" sounds like Carly, and Carly like no other, I still Love her, that has never changed. Thank-You Carly for the love, and the memories.

My mother always said sweet dreams. I love you for reaching out to a kid in 1970s. I can still listen and get it at 70. Thank you
As a senior member, class of 1946 Baby Boomer, we................all.... had memories of all the best of times, of music, of life in general. It will never be again, no matter how good things become. It was a time of unprecedented optimism, of joy and ...of just plain fun. I am so grateful for being there. I don't know what I did to be so blessed, but, thank you, God, for the privilege of being there. Carly was one of us, such a talented girl.
Her dad, the Simon in "Simon and Shuster," mustt have had mixed feelings about Carly and this song. Can you imagine the captain's of industry asking him how did your daughter turn out? "Well, she's a millionaire rock star who writes her own songs. She just married James Taylor, and I'm gonna be a grandfather. So I'd say she turned out pretty good."
@@emilymalden3310 wow...Too bad, that must have been crushing. Him not knowing what an icon his daughter turned out to be. Must have been all that hard work put him in an early grave. I was lucky that I went to high school in the mid-70s; there was so much good popular music on the radio during those years. Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, Janis Ian, Phoebe Snow, the list just goes on and on. And all so distinctive --- nobody else sounds like Carly Simon, Stevens, any of the others. Nobody like 'em today.
And the best part back then was, you had no diversions when you went to see a concert. No friggin' I-phones or selfies, just pure enjoyment of the act. Then afterwards, we'd go to a house party, and anyone who went was abuzz with their experience. And we'd play the artist on the turntable (yes, a turntable-and we'd hold the cover and comment on the picture or design of the cover) over and over. Good times. RIP Johnny Boy (best party's)
I agree! 1973 grad.... I still listen to all of them... I went to a class at the YMCA on Monday, the music, if you can call it that, was all electronically generated. I was wishing for wireless earphones.@@awomanwonderful
I have the comment on that I was 19 in that year which is 53 years ago! Carly Simon In my opinion will always be the best female vocalist. She’s like an angel now we are in 2024. I don’t hear much about her but I have this video for memories and I really felt for that lady.❤
Same. She was my mom's favorite, thus the reason I was named Carly (Megan is my middle name)....my mom passed when I was 8 & I cling to Carly to help remember the time we had together 💓
She is the real deal. Love her. The reason music from my generation was so genuine is there weren't any rules. Music was evolving and there was room for genius writing and performing like this song has. I was in high school and I remember wondering if our music could possibly be as incredible as it seemed. In retrospect, it was. Artists like this created magic for us, and I am eternally grateful for all their talent and hard work.
+sunlitweb They touched our thoughts and feelings by weaving their musical creations into the fabric of our lives; ensuring that we'd carry our experiences as we aged, while their voices and melodies became the back drop, the soundtrack if you will. You're right, our music more than stood the test of time.
+sunlitweb Being a very young "60" now....Carly/Taylor and the majority of the 'soft-rock' registrar was not my hip.....mind you...lOl I was (am-ll) quite the hipster....BUT...in my broad knowledge of contemporary music...these songwriters stood TALL. Carly Simon has always owned a SPOT in my personal vinyl bin...JT///Nope...Still, here in 2015...this song never fails to bring tears to my eyes for so many reasons I quiver inside in an attempt to categorize them...oh...yeah, I'm a 100% oversexed hetro living with a gorgeous easter european (bulgarian) woman 18 yrs my junior.....who , with a massive bunch of letters (degrees) after her name still finds my catagoration of music dificult to annex.......so goes life: whatever's left at this point..."WHO-you're- I am? so VAIN!"
My God, she is the most beautiful, talented woman, that has ever sat at a piano, this song takes me right back.... Mid 70s. Life was much, much simpler.... Just sayin.
Eileen Joyce. And she’s just one example of a more “talented” piano player. Carly is prodigiously talented. But what Eileen Joyce was doing was something totally different, way more complex, etc... still, I’m pretty sure we can say, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that just citing this one example disproves your “hype”. I love Carly, and I know she was stunningly gorgeous. But she’s just one of many.
I am Frank 1952. I’ve always been a huge fan of the lovely Carly Simon. She is like a angel thank you for your music I always wanted to meet you in person. Hugs and kisses Carly.❤
I think this was one of the most misunderstood and underappreciated song of its time. People didn't really listen to the words except for the chorus. If that's all you notice, it sounds happy. It's much deeper and not at all a happy song, very cynical but wise. I've always related to this song. My parents had a terrible relationship and siblings didn't do so well either. For the longest, I wasn't sure I ever wanted to get married since many men my age think wife = unpaid servant,(aka slave). I got lucky and found a pretty great guy, and we've been happily married 30 years now, but I also know I dodged a lot of bullets along the way if you know what I mean. I'm still convinced most couples who stay together aren't all that happy with each other.
Wow! Always knew Carly Simon had one of the greatest singing voices in America history but forgot she is also among the most beautiful singers as well.
I was 13 when this song came out. It has such deep meaning, and Carly co-wrote it. Everybody asks her about "You're So Vain". I'd ask her about this song. What was the inspiration to write it? This song still sends chills through me, and is so haunting, and so true.
I was reading the lyrics and the page quoted Carly as saying this about the song: About the song, Carly was quoted years later as saying: When I first wrote it, I thought it was an unusual thing for people to break up and now all my friends are divorced.
This song is a haunting reminder of how things were when I was a kid growing up...... I can listen to this a million times and i still shed a tear...... every damn time......
Never married or had kids and not by choice but I cry thinking about my friends and family who have only to experience heartache. This song really hits home when I think of my parents who slept in separate rooms when they were empty-nested. My dad would sit in the dark with his cigarette glowing and my mom read her magazines in her room. I feel sad when I imagine what they were feeling. Heartbreaking!!
I never married either. Engaged three times but in the end, I didn’t see myself settled in. I enjoyed my freedom too much and our life’s goal ended up being way too different. I see all my friends both males and females ending up miserable and confiding in me saying I made the best decision not to get married.
Carly had the melody for over a week rolling around on her head and then her friend and fellow camp counselor Jacob brackman came up with the lyrics , they co-wrote the song . A masterpiece . What a first song for somebody to come out with, Wow , after this the rest was history. She has my favorite voice of all time .
This song really hits close to home and I still listen to it today, which brings chills to my spine. I was about 12 years old when it came out and I remember hearing it. My parents had broken up a couple of years before and looking back now, I realize that it was a loveless marriage that was done because that was what "everyone did". I didn't make the connection at the time but in my adulthood twenties, "marriage",living with anyone and especially having kids, became a I Am Not Going To Do This thing for me. I am almost 65 now, childless but independent and financially secure. Have never regretted that decision.
She breezed in and dropped this great performance - all while fighting crippling stage fright. And singing such a quiet, intimate song, to a huge crowd, is quite the task! I read a book on Carly, Joni, and Carole. In the end, Carly appeared to be the most normal of the bunch, by far!
Wow, always thought this was a love song; this is the first time the full sophistication of the lyric hit me. It's reflecting in the moment of proposal saying: Although the overwhelming evidence from what I see is that marriage leads to bleak disappointment and alienation, or worse, but yes I will marry you because you're asking me and that's what people do. Yet she sings it so hauntingly beautiful, it's like gravity
I take the dark view. Either she's beaten down into submission because she sees no alternative, or --- more hopefully -- the last refrain is an ironic/sarcastic reply to the boyfriend's pressure, a poetic way of saying, "Yeah, right, your badgering really has made me see how wise you are."
That voice has not been duplicated. And to belt it out live while playing the piano, amazing. To think she was always so nervous she almost had to be dragged on stage.
Some of today's music is good also. Don't get stuck in the past? I think we sometimes get a little nostalgic from memories from when the hormones raged during high school and college.
1955 here, so much has been forgotten. . . But my youngest (19) changes everything. She took my wife, who is 62 yrs old, to Ed Sheeran. Music will never die.

I heard she had terrible performance anxiety and didn't like to do concerts
In béisbol terms, she hit it out of the park.
Honorable mention: Those legs.
They just don’t make music like this anymore 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Watching this video you would never think that this was 53 years ago.
Now I feel real old 😕
HOLY COW !! That makes me 72 years old ? What happened ?
Damn am I that old… wow guess I am 🤷♀️✌️
You are right mind blowing and so beautiful!
A thousand years later and the power of that lady never changes
I never realised how beautiful Carly Simon was and how passionate and good of a singer she was.
I never realized how hot she was either!
Yes I 2nd that emotion.
Is, she IS a brilliant singer and a lovely lady.
We in the 70's knew exactly her beautiful voice , songs, and passion.
indeed
It's too bad we never realize how young and beautiful we are when we're young and beautiful.
+Melanie Daniels we are too busy living and reaping the benefits of that youthful beauty......true beauty never dies.....it changes
+Melanie Daniels, Stealing this line for a song lyric. Thanks!
+tgorycki It would be an honor.
Why lord doesn't anyone sing like this anymore? Where are today's Carly Simon's? Please, we need more of her and less of you know who.
No who? Adele? Lady Gaga?
yes sick of these 2 ladies.....they have technical help in all they do......and they have zero charisma.....add arianne grande...madonna and all those others
Taylor Swift? Katy Perry? Beyoncé? Sick of these too!
Sara Bareilles is a good one...

Yes! ,Been loving me some Carly for years her haunting alto, her songwriting ability, this honor (sic), is way over due, congrats Carly, you are truly a modern Master, with great respect-a fan
So? She was no good until some shitty outfit recognized her? You missed the boat.

That was flawless. She is gorgeous, and was in her prime. I melted just now.
She was always my fantasy woman. Shame she made bad choices foe husbands, one a heroin addict and number two came out of the closet after ten years of marriage.
@Barry White ,
You are absolutely correct! Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell were my two favorite "female" singer/songwriters. They are Luciferian-Baphomet/Reptilian entities. It's very evil, very deceptive and very sad!
Agree 150% !! Beautiful !!
Wow! What a babe Carly is ! Will never tire of her song ! Simply magnificent !
I think we all are.
I did that also as a child.

We all strive for our dreams but nobody has all of them come true. Gods got reasons for that we don't understand yet. Just continue being your best you. :)
We got the best years this world had to offer. Undisputed.
I always felt I was born too late. The music in the 60’s and 70’s was pure. I prefer listening to this.
I was lucky I was born in 1952 the music of my life is hard to beat there's nothing and why am I crying
I feel so lucky. Now I'm 70 and feel like I'm fading fast. Grateful.
A lot of sorrow and reality made very beautiful music. True poetry…
I was a young boy in the ‘70’s when this song came out, I wanted to marry Carly Simon and live happily ever after with her, she singing beautifully as we traversed through life…sometimes dreams will always stay forever dreams…so glad I saw this video tonight, it brought me back to happier times in my life

It really is a great song that still holds up all these years later, too many RUclips commenters have an idea that life in 60s/70s/80s was something close to perfect, not at all.
Same here Marilyn. Also one by Carly Simon. I’m sure you know the one I’m thinking of. The just falling out of love one.

Very sad, I hope you found happiness and love.
That was the same for me wow! This song had a powerful message.
Carly Simon and Carole King were two of my all time female artist. Listening sure brings back some fond memories of lost loves in my life.
Karen Carpenter also
Absolutely I agree. I have to toss in Karen Carpenter .. All of these women had unique vocals, and they all just were so amazing.
I'm glad somebody mentioned Carole King. This is coming from a classic rock fan who's favourite bands are Pink Floyd King Crimson Moody Blues and Uriah Heep
Mine too as well as Babs.
Love the above-mentioned but it was Stevie Nicks for me. Still my favorite female vocalist. Always will be. ❤
Those long gone days of this music and it's authenticity will be missed forever. Thank the stars for vinyl and the impetus to record these real sessions.

@Ali Yes a shame too.
@Ali The '60s yes... the early '80s sure but the later '80s/early '90s ehhh... there were moments/people but largely uhmmm... I don't know how to finish that.

Never married or had kids and not by choice but I cry thinking about my friends and family who have only to experience heartache. I hope you never got married, and I hope you never procreated. Your right to be alone is unassailable. Just stay off to yourself.
I never married either. Engaged three times but in the end, I didn’t see myself settled in. I enjoyed my freedom too much and our life’s goal ended up being way too different.

Congratulations on being induced in the rock and roll hall of fame- you deserve it !!
Rivetting.. No one can match the purity of her voice or her incredible phrasing. What a gorgeous and moving song.
Carly is a real legend and still is in July of 2024
Wow, always thought this was a love song; this is the first time the full sophistication of the lyric hit me.
Adam Goldman well said my friend.
And that's the way marriage is, bleak disappointment
You are so right on...sad
I take the dark view. Either she's beaten down into submission because she sees no alternative, or --- more hopefully -- the last refrain is an ironic/sarcastic reply to the boyfriend's pressure, a poetic way of saying, "Yeah, right, your badgering really has made me see how wise you are."
I guess you could say it is appropriately sad foreshadowing
That voice has not been duplicated. And to belt it out live while playing the piano, amazing. To think she was always so nervous she almost had to be dragged on stage.
Glad I was born in 1961.....and grew up & got to hear music like this. God save my children & grandchildren from what's playing now.
Amen to this. Today's music sucks eggs.
Some of today's music is good also. Don't get stuck in the past? I think we sometimes get a little nostalgic from memories from when the hormones raged during high school and college.
Myself. August third. It's been an interesting journey. Hope you're still spinning with us right now.
1955 here, so much has been forgotten. . . But my youngest (19) changes everything. She took my wife, who is 62 yrs old, to Ed Sheeran. Music will never die.
was born a few years earlier, 1954. had 2 kids, they grew up good, wouldn't want to bring kids into this world today.
Very soulful song. I am grateful for the straightforward music of the 70's. God I miss those days..
Same. I was 10 in ‘71
