    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 3 года назад +3

      It can add up, the more you put into it, especially when you're fully off-grid but still want to live an on-grid lifestyle with apparently no compromises but that's pretty much all optional. So costs can be scaled to what you need...
      Though, the solar thermal he uses for his hot water is very low cost... Everyone should be doing that one unless they're living somewhere that gets very little sun... Can even be combined with other heat sources like the wood stove. So only need the electric or gas heater for nights or really cold winters, for big long term savings on your heating costs.

    • @asronome
      @asronome 3 года назад +2

      Most tiny homes you'll see online are actually not cheap at all. It's not really their main concern, they just wanna be able to travel or build them somewhere where the land is incredibly expensive

    • @Lisatheecologist
      @Lisatheecologist 3 года назад +3

      He said it cost around $85,000 usd. Its still cheaper than buying a normal house. But it's expensive for a tiny house

    • @DawnOldham
      @DawnOldham 3 года назад +2

      At $85,000, it’s more expensive than many tiny homes, but at the same time, I’ve seen quite a few on different You Tube channels that are in this price range and even higher. This particular home put the money into mostly high end technical gadgets. I think I would need a more aesthetically pleasing bathroom for that price, though lol!

    • @TheTinyHouseMasterPlan
      @TheTinyHouseMasterPlan 3 года назад

      Thanks Eden! Not cheap to be sure! But I got what I paid for - lots of high end materials in here and also all the technology to ensure living off the grid is comfortable and resilient.

    Nice build, Kenton! Lots of smart tech and design ideas. Would love to hear your take on steel framing, solely for durability like rot/termite/high wind event resistance and ease of construction, not so much for travel.

    • @KentonZ
      @KentonZ 2 года назад

      Thanks! Metal framing has some SOLID benefits (pun intended). Much not as easy to work with as wood. For most DIY'ers, stick to wood unless you know what you are doing or NEED the benefits that the metal will offer (Like for a house that travels alot... the weight saving is real).

    I was wondering about the solar panels. Strong winds could trip them, can would fold them in case of strong winds? Love the permaculture comments, being self reliant is a big plus in todays world. Being sustainable too. Also, why is the little wood stove in the kitchen corner? Is it to heat the loft upstairs or to warm the water mass in the counter below? About water, do you have to truck it ? Are you connected to municipal services or a well? That is the best off grid tiny I have seen in Canada. I am sure it is a very comfortable house.

    • @KentonZ
      @KentonZ 2 года назад

      Thanks Chapman! I consulted a structural engineer about the panels and while the house does "wiggle" in the heavy winds, the thing is more likely to take off like Mary Poppins than come apart. Hurricane ties, spray foam, and lots of bolts. Every part is attached to withstand hurricane stress.
      Stove went in the corner of the kitchen to be over my fireproof countertop, to cook off of if I wanted to, and to balance the heating system in the bathroom (Hydronic towel rack).
      I truck in water but I designed the house so I could fill up from a nearby host as well.

    I watched this video many times. This house top them all in terms of energy efficiency. In Canada, we need these adaptations. WOW! I would try to hide some of the electrical machines in the bathroom, they stand out too much , it makes the room feel cluttered , sort of like a storeroom.

    not badm just get a US steel building and have a huuuge barn type workspace right behind your house, so when you are done crafting building sculpting or doing, you have your home to go to. Good concept, but with all that land, you should have a nice huge warehouse/barn type area easily added.

    I think more people chose tiny/ van living because they cannot afford to live any other way. Lifestyle idealistic builds like this one are not targeted to those people. Most of the people who can afford a build like this guy's, use the place as a holiday home/ rental.

    • @TheTinyHouseMasterPlan
      @TheTinyHouseMasterPlan 3 года назад +2

      Hi Ms. Tinglez! A house needs either lots of savings or lots of debt. I took 2 years of saving to get mine. (And I still used a line of credit to get it all done in time.) But I look at that now and think how I live debt-free in my 30s, and its totally worth it. It's also totally achievable for others to save and do the same, granted they don't need to spend as much I did.
      In my experience, having taught hundreds of people now, the students of mine who follow through with going tiny are using their tiny house as a full-time residence. A few of the people I taught 5-6 years ago have transitioned from their tiny house as their family grew beyond they planned, or as they saved up money.
      Btw, that's an amazing way to use a tiny house no matter your income; use it to "leapfrog" or transition to whatever you want next... and actually afford it!
