We had a bunch of different Massey-Ferguson tractors on our dairy farm in Ontario, Canada; but, the MF165 was my favourite, and I spent countless hours on it. My Dad purchased it new in 1971, I remember it being offloaded the day they brought it out to our farm, I was 10 years old. My Dad purchased it without the Multi-Power because he heard that feature had problems; subsequent tractors we owned had that feature and it worked fine. I suspect farmers were shifting the Multi-Power without using the clutch, when you did that the tractor lurched and I'll bet it was hard on it. Our MF1080 tractor had Multi-Power, I always used the clutch when I put it in "High" and it worked perfectly, never had a problem, and it was a great feature to have. We never owned the MF1155; but, we did have the MF1105 with air conditioning. People only had problems with the hydraulics on these tractors when they blew a hose to an implement, like a cultivator, or disc. The low oil in the hydraulic system then caused the failure, if you didn't top up the hydraulic oil like smart people should do. We had two such occurrences, one with the cultivator, the other with the disc, we immediately topped up the hydraulic oil before moving the tractor (and replaced the bad hose), and we never had a problem! My Dad was a smart man, he could fix anything, and I miss him very much.
That brings back memories from the ‘70’s! Put a lot of hours on an 1135 and an 1155. Good pulling power, fuel efficient and simple to service. Thanks for this.
I operated an 1155 like this in 1973 - brand new - in west Texas, plowing dry-land cotton. Thought I was in heaven...inside a cab where I didn't have to breath the clouds of dirt. Got paid a whopping $22 a week.
WOW That's awesome you made 22pr hrs weekly and got to work in an awesome tractor to boot. I inherited my dad's 1150 V8 MASSEY FERGUSON about a 70 model I'm going to restore her to like new condition because I don't have a whole lot of money to restore to brand new condition. However she'll look real nice though. Anyway HAPPY NEW YEAR
Very Happy to see you had a new video up. You are always very entertaining and informative. Those V8 Perkins were horsepower monsters and that one sounds great. Looking forward to the next installment. Thank You JT.
My Uncle had a 1155, that thing had all kinds of power. It would pull anything and seemed like it could pull a house down. I saw it plow and didn't even struggle pulling a 4 bottom plow. used it to pull out a stuck combine. just an awesome tractor.
Bloody marvelous ! What a beast ! That's easily my favorite in your collection, JT. Congrats on this one ! I only have seen one once over here in Europe. I was dumpstruck by this engine. The sound is just glorious.
I appreciate your videos. I cut my teeth on Massey Fergusons. My neighbor always told me this, "There is only one thing better than a Massey Ferguson and that is two of them!" My neighbor had a couple of 135's, a 175, a 255, a 1100, a 1150, a 1155 and the big 2805. It was a good time back then.
I love masy Ferguson . It's always been one of my favorites. The 1155 just cool tractor the motor sounds good. Be fun to watch you get this back to work. Great video.
I was a Massey Ferguson mechanic in the late ‘70’s. Loved the CAV injector pumps. I could turn up the fuel delivery and get extra horsepower out of those old babies. 1135 and 1155 were great work horses.
Thank you for a great video of the ultimate Massey 1135, I was literally squirming on my seat willing that old girl to start. Well done, thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was me 5 months ago when I bought my 255 massey it got parked in the bush for 15 years becuse it needed a clucth I put fresh fuel and battery in it and it rolled over about 8 times and the way it went and drove it home 10 miles did clucth and paint job and its one of the best tractors on my farm
Two thumbs 👍! Man those old Masseys were probably good , but I wouldn't have any idea how to work on them. I really never knew why the Perkins Engines gave trouble. They were good engines overall. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome back, missed your videos and she's a beaut. It will be fun watching her transformation! I just picked up a new piece of red iron myself. I know have an 880 4furrow to go on the back of my 1085. Just got to get the corn off and try her out!!
My 185 row crop still works . My hydrolics need working on as well . They still work just ever once in a while they will quit . My only wish is it has a Perkins instead of the Continental engine however it's easy to get started in the cold.
On your manifold on this 1155 on one side and later on the 1800 if ya'll would paint the manifold flat black it would really improve the looks of both tractors. Sure the twin chrome stacks on this 540ci Perkins look good as does it's sound. As well as repainting the valve covers silver on both machines. I noticed on the 1800 a yellow patch signified Caterpillar. This shows up from far away.
@@jtsbarnngrill6873 Would be nice to have a lot of things wouldn't it, but some times you make do with what you have. I wish you well with this beast. Hope it all simple things to fix.
We have 2 of them 1 on daul straight pipes and the other with a single pipe are they are freaking loud when we're using them 1 on a bale grinder and the on stock chopper and they do have alot of power
She's got to come apart ... spent too many years driving one of those as well as 1100 , 1135 and various Internationals ,probably put a 100,000 miles on tractor ... Growing up on a farm will do that to ya...
Nice! Glad to see you again. I finished my IH 986, now you’re making me think about rebuilding another tractor! Great job JT thanks for sharing your endeavors
Subscribed! I love Massey's I only have a industrial 20 loader Massey but I also put a perkins t6.354.4 in my 85 c30 chevy with a 5x3 trans. I have a shorts video of me running though some of the gears on my channel the perkins sounds so good now I just gotta find a Massey 1130 to haul behind it
The last 540 we rebuilt we had to put the used crank bearings back in parts came from England and all over god’s creation. We only planted with that tractor another year before upgrading 40 years to something with auto steer. It’s a good looking 1155.
Looks like a pretty decent looking 1155, the tin work looks really straight. I’m sure a good work out would make it run even better. Years ago I had a 2805 Massey with the 640 Perkins, it was a horse when running, a little hard to start when cold. Our 2805 had the Rotary CAV Pump, not the in-line Bosch. I’m a Michigan Guy as well, you need a sense of humor to live in this state, just for the weather.
@@jtsbarnngrill6873 mine had the straight 8 speed, no power shift. Didn’t have any transmission problems. AC was hard to keep running. We got rid of it in the late 90’s early 2000.
A tip for cold starts put the throttle full open go around to the right side of the engine and reach in on the fuel injection pump and find the fuel enrichment button and trip it. Now she will start much easier..
I’ve been subscribed for a while now (I think the Steiger series was when I subscribed) finally got the chance to go back and watch some of your older videos. Baffles me how you don’t have 100k sub yet but I know you’ll get there, good stuff for sure. What is your background? Is it just farming or are you a mechanic? You definitely have a broad skill set.
I appreciate that! I’ve dabbled in a little of everything, grew up farming, 20 years of auto parts and paint, and back to an ag related 9/5 job with my own hobby farm tossed in the mix. Been reviving old tractors for several years now and thought others would enjoy watching what I enjoy doing!
We had a smaller MF and the farm down the road had a 1155 both had good engines but ours and theirs had lousy 3 point hitch lift problems. They gave up on using their 3 point hitch pulling a chisel plow and we just sold ours to get a JD with their simple 3 point hitch draft.
Once upon a time when these tractors weren't antiques, I drove around an MF 1155 that had broken in half at the clutch housing when it was coming out of a field. Stranded on the edge of a two lane black top road blocking traffic. I have no idea what caused the split other than it was not because of a vehicle hitting the tractor. I've always wondered if these tractors had an unstated weakness in the frame.

Nice interesting video, I have a 1155, she pulls well. It could be the oil cooler also that’s letting antifreeze into the block.
I think that’s my culprit

If I recall, the water pump bolts onto the aluminum timing case. They can corrode a pinhole through the case and put antifreeze in the base.
