Looking back at this battle, you really can tell they put effort in the background details. I remember the prequels with more fondness as I didn't grow up when the original trilogy came out. The CGI still holds despite its very old provenance. Also impressive to think Gungans are overpowering solid metal droids. That takes lots of courage.
I know this is just a movie, and in the lore the Trade Federation was all powerful through bribes and droid army. Yet I still cannot fathom how no one in a whole galaxy did not volunteer to fight for the Naboo.
The battle of Naboo has four important parts that all go through similar atmospheres. By that I mean they all share a point where they do well at first and then things go bad and then they eventually become triumphant. For this part with the gungans they do well diverting the droid army’s attention with their shields and energy spheres. For the second part the Jedi are fighting well against Maul and mostly holding their own. For the third part Anakin destroys 3 Droidekas as he takes off and survives well for a bit in the space battle. For the fourth part the Queen and her group make good progress to Gunray. Then things start to go bad for all of them. The gungans are overwhelmed and their shield is destroyed. Maul killed Qui Gon. Anakin is seemingly about to be captured while inside the federation battleship. The queen and her group are captured. Then they triumph. The queen outsmarts the Viceroy and captures him. Anakin destroys the battleship from the inside. The droids then disable as a result of the battleship’s destruction and the gungans celebrate. Obi Wan kills Maul. Edit- - yes I know this comment is long but I love Star Wars
I love how Roos Tarpals is working with Jar Jar here. According to the fandom, he and Jar Jar were good friends at first. But after Boss Nass banished him from Ootah Gunga (The Gungan City), Tarpals had to sadly end his friendship with Jar Jar and follow Boss Nass's order to keep him from coming back. But, from what is being experienced here, Tarpals is actually rekindling his friendship with Jar Jar.
Remember when the Battle Droids were meant to be a wall of unceasing blaster fire coming from cold, unfeeling machines that will step over their own kind to attack you, instead of goofy cowards who can't besiege a candy bar? Pepperidge Farm remembers.......
@@HolyknightVader999 I believe the reason in lore was that because of the glaring weakness that happened on Naboo where the loss of the control ship effectively wiped out their army, the B1s were given 'independent' droid AI of a sort allowing them to act freely without need for a Droid control ship and therefore eliminating the Achilles heel that was their control system. That said turning them into complete buffoons and goofballs instead of having them be somewhat closer to the 'personality' of the B1s in the Phantom Menace was a complete moronic move from an entertainment point of view; but was likely done to appeal them to a younger audience as 'comic relief' of a sort.
I agree, But I do like the Lore reason behind it. B1 on Naboo were defeated by knocking out the Control Ship, so going forwards there would be independent droid armies. But free thinking droids need memory wipes or they start to develop quirks. The Trade Federation, being massive cheapskates, don't bother to wipe their droids after long use. They prefer cheap hordes over small tactical groups. So the foot soldier B1's became goofballs.
@@therobloxplayer5556if I follow correctly, the voice actor for Jar-Jar returned as the Jedi who helped Grogu (baby Yoda) escape the Jedi Temple during Order 66 in the Mandalorian tv series.
So I don’t know why i wanted to know, but I counted how many droids there were on 1:21 so I just counted them all. The amount of droids you could see on the screen were 798 droids.
They were still awesome though. Besides the resistance had a clear target all three times. And you can't tell me watching Poe destroy an entire planet wasn't cool as fuck
What are the names for the smaller white droids cleaning up in the background at? 4:13 obviously not the B1 Battledroids but the smaller guys, anyone know?
Notice in this movie that most of the droid technology depicted is the earliest battle-ready tech the CIS had and that there were subtle yet significant changes and improvements made like semi-sentience and personal shielding for destroyer droids as a result of this battle. Love ot when movie producers think of minor details like that.
This battle shows us how the logic of George Lucas shields works. These ground based shields prevent craft that hovers in the air from entering it. The tanks don't attack until after the shield goes down. This also shows why walkers are so common in star wars especially the AT type walkers.
Not all versions of the Droiekas had shields. The ones used for defense (earlier on the ship& in the hanger). The ones deployed for this battle lacked the shields but could be deployed in "squads". The shields also had the risk of overheating (at this point in time). Best way to think about it is: keep the tougher more expensive near HQ. Send the cheaper out to fight. (Trade Federation would rather throw 10k cheap than send 1 expensive.)
I really loved this battle sequence. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like it before. A battle against aliens and a droid army, with droid battle ships and alien dinosaurs. George Lucas was really cooking when he thought of this idea. It’s even more incredible when you factor out theres 3 other battle just as crazy happening at the same time.
At 0:361:46 Lucas showing the Gungan army used the best army of the Middle Ages - Hussars - Polish heavy cavalry. 700 Hussars were able to defeat an army of over 20,000 opponents. The Gungans have the same wings as the Polish cavalry.
One of the biggest weaknesses of the battle droids was their inability to think independently. When Jar Jar released the boomas, they were unable to dodge them or try to stop them.
Yeah, this movie sucks monkey balls. What a complete deception it was. Lucas botched the prequels, no matter how much copium some try to apply to them. Star Wars died in 1983.
I like how when Jar Jar get's his foot tangled up in the droids wires, there's another Gungan in the background beating seven bells out of battle droid with what looks like his own blaster.
In a way, surrendering _still_ accomplished their objective of keeping the Droid Army out of Theed: that Droid Army now had to process all the Gungan soldiers as prisoners. And that is indeed what they were doing when the control ship popped and they just stopped dead in their tracks.

1:15 seeing all those droids activate is really scary, especially with the music kicking in, really can give a sense of dread
The activation echo is so chilling to hear too
Looking back at this battle, you really can tell they put effort in the background details.
They probably wanted to but that kind of thing takes time and the battle was over by the time they could show up
mostly of the Republic members didn't even have an army at that time. plus, no one knew that the Queen was planning to fight them in battle
Republic is in decline, the last major war was over 1000 years ago.
Most planets now had militias and basic armies.
Nothing compared to eras past.
You're totally right, good analysis. It's the poetry that George Lucas uses a lot and the excellent way he uses pacing in his movies! :)
And things went bad cause druids are in the thousands, and they don't tire.
Anakin's autopilot was kinda OP in that battle, he survives for like 10 minutes without touching the controls much.
1:27 I always loved the sound of them grabbing their guns
You sir are a god. This is the cleanest edit I have seen yet. Glorious. This edit really shows how one-sided the battle is in favor of the droid army.
To be honest the gungans were just to be a diversion and despite that they did surprisingly well in the odds against them
I love how Roos Tarpals is working with Jar Jar here.
Bet he would've defended jar jar when got exhiled again
After 24 years, I just now noticed Gungans wrestling hand to hand with a few of the droids... Lol
4:33
Battle Droid 1138.
Remember when the Battle Droids were meant to be a wall of unceasing blaster fire coming from cold, unfeeling machines that will step over their own kind to attack you, instead of goofy cowards who can't besiege a candy bar?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.......
They had to make the B1 look bad so the new baddies(B2, commandos, magnaguards) could shine
@@granalmirantethrawn2972 Not even. The B1s were still cold and calculating until they later got turned into goofballs.
Meanwhile the real money was invested into the B2, Commandos, and Droideka models.
That Gungan in the background at 2:24 is throwing hands on that droid I’ve never noticed that before
Its amazing how the CGI was in this movie.
It's very PS2 cutscene like but it's good for its time
I miss the old Droid voices
The way they actually sound intimidating rather than silly and childish will always make me shudder
@@Spiralredd especially the Droid announcer
2:33 Greatest Force-user ever
I don't care what people say. Visually, this battle is amazing. Entertaining as well.
Most iconic scene in star wars
I mean, not the most but certainly very much iconic in the prequel era
And to think this is the guy who saved Grogu.
what?
He is the Best! Here’s to Ahmed
@@therobloxplayer5556if I follow correctly, the voice actor for Jar-Jar returned as the Jedi who helped Grogu (baby Yoda) escape the Jedi Temple during Order 66 in the Mandalorian tv series.
@@BrowncoatGofAZ it's also mentioned that jedi had help from Naboo. So it's likely *both* of Ahmed's roles had a part in saving Grogu.
I absolutely love all of the droids moving in unison, it makes them even more intimidating because they appear that much more inhuman.
11 year old me saw this back in 99 greatest childhood of watching the beginning of Star Wars
Ah one of the best Star Wars movies ever made
Definitely top 10 of the main series
@@tradtke101well which one doesn't qualify cuz there's only 11 mainline films
@@Spiralredd Don't give terrible websites any ideas.
2:21 if you look closer behind Jar Jar you see Gungans melee fighting droids, pretty nice detail
So I don’t know why i wanted to know, but I counted how many droids there were on 1:21 so I just counted them all. The amount of droids you could see on the screen were 798 droids.
Am i the only one who never noticed the small white droids
PK worker droids i think they’re called. Yeah i never noticed em before too
Where were they?
@AA-jp9cj The PKs can be seen at 4:12 cleaning up destroyed B1s.
I saw them, but sadly they're often completely forgotten about. They're called PK droids. They're Trade Federation mechanic/worker droids.
“Just like the simulations”
Jar Jar really made this film, should’ve received an Oscar.
Sad thing is that I still find this more thrilling than any of the battles in the Sequel Trilogy.
The droids in this movie were so much better. They were machines coming to kill you rather than useless goofballs
Because aotc is more darker than tpm and rots is even darker so the droids get sillier in each prequel movie
@@Azactthey weren’t really silly in attack of the clones actually.
The OOM-series droids didn't have as many processing problems as the B1-series droids did.
Multiple times they were portrayed this way
Tbf in the Clone wars there were many scenes of a massive relentless droid army with no comic relief
Even this one scene has more originality to it than any sequels battle
They were still awesome though. Besides the resistance had a clear target all three times. And you can't tell me watching Poe destroy an entire planet wasn't cool as fuck
I think the Attack of the Clones fight, Clones vs Separatists Army in the sandstorm is one of the best battle scenes in any of the movies.
2:04 how anything can survive that is beyond me
The fact that the gun gangs stood their ground is wild when you have an army of 6” 3 hunks of evil metal coming at you
2:29
I cant say if this is CGI or real
3:46 and 3:52 really had me rolling on the floor laughing.
What are the names for the smaller white droids cleaning up in the background at? 4:13 obviously not the B1 Battledroids but the smaller guys, anyone know?
Pk droids
@om6988 hey thanks, I have never noticed them till I watched The Phantom Menace again in theater last night.. very cool.. appreciate the help
4:00 background music name?
Notice in this movie that most of the droid technology depicted is the earliest battle-ready tech the CIS had and that there were subtle yet significant changes and improvements made like semi-sentience and personal shielding for destroyer droids as a result of this battle. Love ot when movie producers think of minor details like that.
Love the aat. It looks like a really practical sci fi tank design.
"Jar Jar Usad da bomba" "what missa dont have a bomba" 😂😂😂
Darth Jar Jar is a menace
Start 1:40
🌟
This battle shows us how the logic of George Lucas shields works. These ground based shields prevent craft that hovers in the air from entering it. The tanks don't attack until after the shield goes down. This also shows why walkers are so common in star wars especially the AT type walkers.
Best army in Star Wars
2:09 the Droidekas forgot to put up their Deflector Shields when they enter the battlefield
This is my favourite star wara film out of all of the star wars films
I really loved this battle sequence. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like it before. A battle against aliens and a droid army, with droid battle ships and alien dinosaurs.
George Lucas was really cooking when he thought of this idea. It’s even more incredible when you factor out theres 3 other battle just as crazy happening at the same time.
1:14 Good old colonizing .
A, yes, the famous Windows wallpaper battle
Well that's how naboo looked
How many hours did the droid commander spend between "Open fire" and "Cease fire" until he realized it might be time to change strategies?
Lucas: it's gonna be great
Spielberg: that's gonna be great
Lucas: it's gonna be great
Spielberg: that's really gonna be great.
At 0:36 1:46 Lucas showing the Gungan army used the best army of the Middle Ages - Hussars - Polish heavy cavalry. 700 Hussars were able to defeat an army of over 20,000 opponents. The Gungans have the same wings as the Polish cavalry.
4:30 When you're down by dozens of runs in the bottom of the ninth, and the other team inexplicably forfeits.
Active the Droids. 1:10
Jar jar binks: Retreat! 2:51- uh oh 😰 big boomers! 3:07
The control ship has been destroyed look 👀! 4:34
One of the biggest weaknesses of the battle droids was their inability to think independently. When Jar Jar released the boomas, they were unable to dodge them or try to stop them.
Imagine staying in a queue days and nights to get premiere tickets... and then you see... this.
Gives you some perspective on life.
Killjoy
You joking? This is so cool
Droids: It’s over Gungans! We have the high ground!
Gungans: Yousa underestimate wesa power!
Sure this CGI might not be amazing now but I really don't get what 1999 audience were complaining about.
no one complained about the cgi. it was mind blowing back then
never seen anything like it
the droids are also practical
In a way, surrendering _still_ accomplished their objective of keeping the Droid Army out of Theed: that Droid Army now had to process all the Gungan soldiers as prisoners. And that is indeed what they were doing when the control ship popped and they just stopped dead in their tracks.
Droid army looks like my family on shopping trips. Gungons look like store staff at Christmas time 🎄🎁😂.
