    A quick update after 8 years: the solenoid broke again. I think this time it is the rubber part that is getting old. Need to open the valve and look, but in the meantime it flooded my engine. I had to do an oil change in order to avoid engine damage. Check your oil level before you ride, especially when you encounter a lot of smoke when you start the engine!

    I didn’t have a solenoid issue but a problem with my Husqvarna YTH21K46 surging. Your video is the absolute best on RUclips for accessing the carb, removing the solenoid and putting everything back together again. Cleaning my carb and replacing all the gaskets fixed my mower, but I’m still saving this video for future reference. Thanks!!

    These engines have so many issues it blows my mind that Kohler has not been sued over a the bad design. Be sure to check the sump bolts up under the top blower cover, if they come loose it will crack the case and you’ll need a new engine. When I service these engines I remove them clean the oil off threads and install red locktite then torque them to spec.

    Good professional video, always nice to see the proper way to fix things!
    Using some metallic heat tape will also prevent this issue, and be a little less costly.
    Cutting the solenoid tip off works too, but as you said, it can still Backfire. Normally I would just throttle the engine rpm down to low, then shut it off. That usually that prevents the backfiring when the solenoids are cut.
    Cheers from Ontario Canada!

    Helpful video. I just finished this same repair after watching this video and using the instructions included in the kit. I would add that you should plug the connector of the new wiring harness into the solenoid socket before tightening the nuts to the carb because there will be very little room for your fingers otherwise. That step seemed to be missing from the written instructions. The plug appears to fit either way - i.e. apparently without regard to polarity (or I got lucky). My mower cranks right up now.

      OK, i checked mine. Even though the plug is keyed, it fits in both directions. I measured the internal coil against the metal housing, and there is no connection. And that means, that it doesn't matter which way you connect it. You have a 100/100 chance to get it right! The original solenoid was different, one of the pins was common ground with the metal housing of the solenoid.

    This video has me intrigued. I have a 2001 Cub Cadet 2166 with the 16 hp Kohler Command engine. When it's hot out, and I have been cutting for awhile, the engine sounds like it kind of misfires. It's rather subtle. If I throttle down it doesn't idle as smooth as it does when it's cooler. If I turn it off and on again, sometimes there will be a puff of black smoke out of the exhaust. That tells me it has to be fuel. Sometimes it may even stall when starting up again. The engine itself runs great until it heats up enough, and that's only on real hot days. Also, sometimes when I turn it off at low idle, it will backfire. If I turn it off at half throttle it's fine. If I am doing other tasks, and running at about 1/2 or 2/3 throttle, it never has a problem. It's just on hot days, running full throttle while cutting for an hour or two. I've been stumped for so long what it could be. Could it be my fuel solenoid?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  8 лет назад

      That is very much possible. Puff and black smoke means too much gas, but misfire means not enough gas or missing ignition. If the fuel solenoid doesn't close, then the gas can flow into the carburetor and flood the engine. If that only happens, when it's hot, then maybe that's your problem. I would say it's worth a try.

    • @Syxx423
      @Syxx423 8 лет назад

      Thanks for the reply. One time after I was done cutting the grass on a hot day last year, I turned it off like I always do to clean the deck off with the air compressor. After I got done and started it back up, it stalled on me driving to the shed. I had to use full choke, on a hot engine, to keep it going. I didn't like that, so I turned it off and let it set for a couple minutes or so. It then started up like normal, and I could finish driving to the shed. It hasn't done that since. Does that sound like it could have been the solenoid?
      After viewing your video I went out to the shed to see if I could hear the solenoid clicking. I never noticed before, but when I turn the key, there is no clicking sound from the solenoid.
      My 2166 has about 500 hours, but I keep it clean. This odd issue has been driving me nuts for a few years now. lol

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  8 лет назад

      Yeah, I saw that video. I found it quite interesting. I will keep it in mind when I get around to changing the solenoid. I also saw your unboxing video of the repair kit for your machine. The repair kit that I found that appears to be for mine is a bit different. The solenoid is shorter and wider than the old one. It also doesn't seem to come with a heat shield or any gaskets like yours did. I hope the new Kohler design is more durable than the old one. I'm surprised how expensive such a small part is.

    Amazing video. I have a cub cadet xt1 lt46, which I believe has the 22-HP V-Twin KOHLER.
    After about 4 years, now when the mower get's hot (about 15 minutes into running) it stutters and stalls out - like when you're trying to mow too thick of grass that's wet. Not so much when it's colder out, only when it's warmer in late spring/summer. Acted like bad gas or fuel filter..
    I've literally changed everything I could thing of, EXCEPT for the fuel solenoid; plugs, gas filter, ignition coils (twice) and made sure they're spaced correctly. Nothing has worked. Ordered the Kohler OEM Engine Repair Kit Solenoid Fuel Shut-Off kit from amazon. Hoping this is it.. and your video works for guidance on replacing mine.

But there's a low idle set screw and a fuel mixture screw on the carb itself that u can usually get to. Some also have a governor gear on them. You could check if you have one of those to adjust too.
      Also, they make spark detectors. An in between cord that goes from your spark plug to the plug wire. It has a clear bulb fuse type filament in it. It doesn`t "click" it just turns real slow for a second then nothing. If I let it sit for a bit it will fire up again like normal. I've always had to use the choke to start it, even when it's hot. Last year my dealer told me it was the valves that needed adjusting. They did it for $160 and it worked well for a year, now it's doing it again. I've changed my battery, starter and ignition switch. Do you smell gas when you attempt to restart it when hot? If you do, pull the spark plug and see if it's wet. If not, then the engine is probably not getting enough fuel which seems to be the case since you have to choke it when restarting all the time. The carb float could be stuck with a bad solinoid. Check the solinoid by unscrewing it and turning the igniton on/off and see if it moves. It should. While doing that, empty any dirt from the carb bowl. Good luck.

      Robc509 not really, backfiring when you turn the engine off is the solenoid, but surging is something else. Maybe you have two problems at once. A missing heat shield could cause surging, if the engine is extremely hot. Gasoline boiling, and bubbles causing the surging.

      If you shut the engine down at full throttle it won't backfire. The solenoid blocks the main jet. If you shut down at low speeds the solenoid doesn't block the idle passage so it can still pull fuel and backfire.

    6 years ago my Kohler 20 hp would not start. It had sat for 2 years because of my health, anyway my neighbor came and took it to his shop and found that the solenoid plunger was not moving up and down like it should...saw a RUclips video that showed to cut off the solenoid plunger at its lowest point, replacing it in the carburetor but putting a simple on/off fuel switch between the tank and carburetor. Problem solved but you have to manually turn fuel on and off and I am able to allow fuel to run out before putting it up for the winter.
    This is not for everyone to do but it was very easy and cost about 6 dollars for the fuel switch and line. I just know that you must cut the plunger off at it's lowest point.

    Does it matter which way you plug the wire leads into the solenoid? Or can the red wire go on either post of the solenoid plug-in slot?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  7 лет назад

      I think it matters, but i am not sure. The red wire is the power wire, and the black one is the ground wire, if there is a connection between the solenoid housing and the ground wire (i don't know, if there is one), then you will create a short, if you connect the black wire to the red one coming from the ignition switch. My recommendation: don't connect the red wire with the black wire!

    • @TheMonkeyboiii
      @TheMonkeyboiii 7 лет назад

      Right, i know where to attach the wires to the mower, red to ignition and black is ground. I meant, when you plug those wires to the solenoid, the white plug of the wires can plug into the black slot on the solenoid either way. So if say, I'm looking at the solenoid in my hand with the black plug (with the two prongs) facing me, would the ground go to the left prong or right prong on solenoid? I hope I'm describing that right. Thanks for reply.

      @@mygiguser always ran. I just found the real culprit on my Kohler 12.5 hp. The block was filling with gas. What the problem was caused by is the....... FUEL PUMP DIPHRAM . It has a split in it and when the needle would stop the fuel from entering the float bowl it overcame that resistance and would pump the crankcase full of fuel to the point it would stop running. Unless you smelled the dipstick and got out a microscope you can't see gas on a dipstick very easily. Most Briggs have an external fuel pump that isn't mechanical, like the one Kohler uses. I put a new carb on mine, then the damn plastic governor shredded lol. So take the engine apart to replace a $10 plastic governor. SMDH 🤷🏻‍♂️

      First time working on one of these for a friend. Can't say I like these engines. The whole bucket engine idea is kinda weird. The small engine shop in bum fucked egypt ran a wire from the solenoid to the ignition. That wire burned up to nothing. Thankfully the wire harness survived. Every time I connected the battery the 20A fuse popped. Sitting there scratching my head. Finally popped the flywheel off and sure enough, magnets on the flywheel were pulverized shorting out the stator.

    Why is this video titled "How to fix the Kohler Solenoid Problem the Right Way" when it shows a carberator repair? Or am I missing something?

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  4 года назад

      Charles Smith the solenoid was replaced, and a heat shield was added. For that you need to remove the carb. The carburetor was not repaired.

      @@mygiguser So this is how to add a heat shield. Replacing a solenoid can be done with the carb. in place, just unscrew the old and screw in the new. Or is the heat shield to protect the solenoid?

      @@mygiguser The video is still titled "How to fix the Kohler Solenoid Problem the Right Way" It doesn't say squat about a carberator. Your response is "silly". (Just being politically correct)

      Dude, you could replace the solenoid with carb still on I guess. But for the repair to be effectual, he's takin the carb off and putting the heat shield on. Changing some gaskets and hardware too. He's not taking the carb apart to repair it. Do you know what a carb repair looks like? If you did, I don't think you'd be nitpicking in such a "silly" way. Cuz carb repairs take apart the carb and clean each part using elec cleaners or other solutions.
      And ya MyTech, the heatshield is to protect the solenoid from overheating and failing. Carb itself does not need any temp protection.

    So, is this guy saying I shouldn’t have taken a 24 pound sledge hammer and beaten the hell out my tractor and then started it on fire because it wouldn’t start?

    There still going to be a problem the solenoid is going to go bad again. they are trash . the best way to fix this problem is by pass it, an put a a shut of valve in the gas line to turn the gas off your self .. There nothing but a anti backfire . if you shut you fuel off. an then run the mower till it uses all the gas out of the carb you wont have the back fire prob . easy fix . an save you many down the road .. some of these solenoids can cost you upwards to 90$
