- In "Loathe Thy Neighbor", Slippers and his neighbor Ed take an interesting trip to the shop before Taryl shows you how to rebuild a Kohler Command carburetor. He also covers carburetor kits for the Courage engine and how to install the needle and seat. And There's Your Dinner!!
**IMPORTANT PLEASE READ**: When Using Purple Power (as shown in this video) BE AWARE that some carburetors are a mixture of different alloy metals and the Purple Power will attack those alloys leaving a white chalky residue. So only soak the carburetor for a couple hours or so in order to avoid this. Although the chalky white substance on the carb WILL NOT hurt anything.

Thanks Taryl, you made me look like a genius in front of my 12 year old son. We are fixing up an old John Deere L110 so he can make some extra cash this summer. I will cherish this memory forever. Thank you again.
That mower's not to bad but mines missing tension on the deck belt its also been missing a clutch pulley works without it but you can't put the deck down past 4 or the belt rubs metal with a clutch pulley on how it works when you engage the blades the pulley clutch goes down keeping the deck belt level with the deck
Sense im not gonna put a clutch pulley on it im gonna put something on the deck to keep that belt tight and put a stop between 3 and 4 because lowering the deck past 4 messes up the new belts i made mines carburetor gravity fed
It is such a pleasure to watch you work. You are poetry in motion. Every move you make (No time wasted) is toward the accomplishment of the desired goal. I'll bet you have a photographic memory, and you enjoy your work immensely. My Dad was the same. I loved watching him work. I learn so much from you, it is pure pleasure to observe.
Thank you very much.
My 52 inch Toro Timecutter has this carb on it. It was leaking from the carb when I got it. I got tired of having to shut the gas off every time I finished using it. Took the carb off at least 10 times to clean it and it still leaked. Took a picture of the seat with my phone camera, and blew it up, and it looked like someone had taken something and put a rectangular dent across the tapered part of the seat. No amount of cleaning worked. Up here in Canada that kit cost over 80.00. So I put a piece of hardened 1/8 rod in my lathe and ground a taper on it to match the seat, then made a small guide bushing to insert into the seat to keep it straight. Then I chucked it in a portable drill and spun it with some rubbing compound on it until the blemish in the seat was gone, no more leak. Really like your videos though, and they remind me of good times hanging out at my buddy's shop years ago, and all the antics that went on there., from him having a few too many and smashing his old Honda trail 70 with a sledge hammer, to lots of pranks on the unsuspecting.
Dude, 7 years later and your vid is still kicking ass! Thanks man!!
I made a tool similar to that seat puller for the first riding mower I ever worked on years ago. It was for a Briggs, but same basic concept. Keep this gold comin our way Taryl and Jr! You guys rock!
One of the best informational videos I've encountered on RUclips. Part numbers and all. Thanks for a great video.
Taryl & crew - thank you for producing this helpful video. I used the Kohler 12-521-03S rebuild kit on my Craftsman Pro (late 90’s) with a Kohler CV16S gravity fed engine. Popped out the old brass seat with a wonder bar under the head of a 2” long 10-24 thread cutting bolt from local hardware store prying up against a piece of plate steel because my nut kept stripping the bolt on the Taryl Tool when I used the thread method. The tool is a home run and I used a modified shaft from a 5/16” sleeve anchor for the tube base. Greatly appreciate your production efforts and have one suggestion: You might have the water in your pipes checked : ) - there’s your dinner !
I made the tool you invented for the Kohler jet seat replacement. Works like a champ! No more flooding out the carbatrator.
THANKS!
Thanks for the vid Taryl, helped me identify the right kit to get that plug when parts place didn't know what it was.
Thanks Taryl on this repair video. I got one to rebuild for a friend. You made the job alot easier, thanks again. And yes Kohler needs to have just a needle and seat kit.
Fantastic how to, Taryl! The home made gas valve seat jack and test stand are worth their weight in gold.
Thanks for the video Taryl. Taking that little black retainer clip off did the trick for getting the carb off and good advice on not losing that little plastic bushing on throttle link.
Great video! Captures all the little details you need to do this right. This video combined with the video on diagnosing non-starting due to fuel issues got my lawn tractor purring after sitting for a few years. The Ferrari is next!
I cannot believe the effort you and your entourage put into these videos. All that, and more good information than you can shake a stick at. I never need to watch another channel. I have had my Scotts 1642 for over 18 years and it always worked well. I'm just now starting to address some areas that need attention, and you are my "go to" man. Thanks Daryl, and can I borrow a pen?
Taryl , you make it look so easy , I just bought a used scag w/ Kohler command , I’m going to try this , Thankyou
Thanks for the great detailed video buddy, ordering the full kit to rebuild my kohler cv14 this coming week
Love the videos, and followed your instructions step by step. Gotta grab a new oil filter tomorrow before the test fire since I dropped a whole tank of premium fuel in the crankcase. Keep those awesome videos coming. I share them ever though they're not always about my mower. Just love the humor.
I love this guy he is the mower whisperer...
Grant G thanks, indeed I am..... ruclips.net/video/pDCJKIYLeRs/видео.html
The skits are funny I think and I appreciate the work that goes into them. Anyway, I am posting to thank you for this repair video. I just got the old seat out of my LT2000 courage carb using your method with a 4 pack of 10-24 machine screws and nuts and luckily the mower under seat spacers (Craftsman LT2000 part# 134300 $3.99 online price today) are just right. I used a 10mm wrench to turn the nut and the seat came out even though it was very corroded. I first tried their method using a pry bar on top of the tower after putting in the nut and screw they supplied. I cranked the vice down but no way it was coming out before some aluminum was damaged so I went and got the screws and then I tapped the already damaged hole witha 10-24 tap, put the spacer, screw and nut on and it was easy from there. Thanks again!
I love those tools you make, brilliant
+Reaz Mohammed Thanks
Kohler has updated the block so that tapping down the seat to the pin is just right now... completed today. No leaking gas. Thanks for the info
This was the 1st video I watched from your channel. It came recommended because i searched "Kohler Command carb". I was hooked from day one! Still watching 3 years later. Saved me a ton of headaches and $$$. Have used several tips and tricks to keep my old Craftsman LT1000 & LT2000 going. Many thanks again for making these videos.
You guys always say the Lt1000 or other but don't say the engine model so I'll know what model of engine yall was playing around with
@@Mike-su8si The old ones with the Kohler are generally 426CC. Mine is a '99. and CV-16S.(16.5 HP). Before they named them LT-Etc. Green, not grey or red.
I think the 16 'S' means Sears. That threw me off for a bit.. Switched to 426CC and they are rated from 15 to 16.5HP. Not sure why but the above carb is mine. I could tell by looking at it plus the part# kit matched mine. Just started leaking with 900 hours. Trouble free mower into it's 25th year. Outside of the stamped deck which was fine in my old yard but not here or our other house. Spindle city.
@@tommyus4 mine are cv15s cv16s cv491s engines
That's a good video. I could smell the fuel from here. Keep up the good work boys.
great video Taryl, thanks!
I second the request on making a video on adjusting the carburetor. I know that on the Walbro there is a black adjustment on the left side of the carburetor and then a screw/spring adjustment on the top. Would be awesome to see a video on adjusting the carburetor for optimal performance.
Love the video man. Just came across you on youtube, and do have to say...you helped me out alot on this video...before i even do mine. Got the part #,s and how to do it. Also, acting in a funny matter, just makes it all more fun. Im subscribed now, cause i have couple other repairs i gotta do....and im sure ill find something in your videos. Keep up the good work, and thanks for helping me.
I've decided to bag fixing my carb and just let the grass grow while I watch your videos. I just couldn't take my eyes off that pocket full of pens. Pure comic genius.
You are one slick tecknition Taryl, 2 thumbs up. YEAH.
Love the videos Taryl. They are more entertaining than TV.
Hey thanks, we would gladly like a TV show. Haha
I just inherited one of these engines, it’s great to be able to go back into the “Taryl archives” and pull this up!
thanks for this Taryl ...
Thanks! I have to so this to my john deere mower, this will help a lot
Great informative video! I love the humor especially when you call out the manufacturer's! Damn engineers don't have a clue when it comes to actual real world problems! They don't never get thier hands dirty!!! They say here it is, you make it work!
Having the proper kit # saved me a ton of time! Excellent tip for the seat extraction tool. My 2000 Krohler single is back on the job. Over 1,700 hours on the old girl.
What model is it
@@Mike-su8si It’s a 426cc single cylinder model CV15S
Family SKH426U1G2RB
It’s on my 22 year old Crapsman 42inch mower.
I was having chronic carburetor flooding issues even after rebuilding it. Replacing the valve seat finally solved the problem. It’s been a few years now and it’s still running fine. I did add a fuel shutoff valve just to insure the crankcase doesn’t fill with fuel again.
I stumbled on this channel looking for some help with the carb issue & ended up subscribing for the entertainment. Cheers!
@@jatoav8or its just about the same as my cv491s command. it is the same as my cv15s that says john deere but i know it's really a Kohler command engine
Anyway i went ahead and kept the gas pump on mine with no gas shut off valve it needs that i think but i found what kept cutting the gas off on mine someone has the elbow on the bottom of the gas pump turned to far over
may have to take that off again just to turn it to the right direction
I'd like to say this john deere Lt155 is my newest riding mower but its not my used craftsmen lt1000 is the guy kept his john deere in good shape though I've just been going over all the mistakes his mower shop done for him on it
@@jatoav8or i first had those problems with my gravity fed cv16s Kohler pro engine on my green craftsmen
@@Mike-su8si gravity feed is the root of the issue for me. The machine was running ok but the bowl valve would leak while stored which inevitably drained into the cylinder. Anyway, it seems fine and if it occurs again I’m prepared to fix it.
Taryl he is the man--the carburetor wizard !
Just started watching your videos. Wow, great information and very entertaining to watch. I like how you explain things in layman's terms. I just subscribed. Thanks
+Don Raabe Thanks, Keep watchin & Theres yur Dinner!
Taryl, You are awesome.
He worked on one of the best engines ever made
cool. you save me a lot of time and money.. great videos
The tool I made was from a 10-32 or 10-24 self tapping screw 1" long & a corresponding nut. I used a piece of 3/8 steel tubing 5/8" long. I'm sure you can buy the tubing at a good Auto parts store say like Napa
Where do you get a self tapping screw that is 10-24 or 10-32 with a nut? I have checked at Ace, Lowes and Home depot and they tell me that they don't make them?
Fastenall ?
I got my 10/24 “thread cutting” bolt from the specialty box section in my local small hardware store - it’s either an Ace or DIY/Best store. Sold in singles & Cost under a dollar : )
Thank you. I had ordered a rebuild kit through Sears Parts Direct. The had no directions and lots of parts that weren't in the carb I had. Also no knew seat, which I didn't know i needed until I saw your video, so when I finished and started it up it ran beautifully. Purred like a cat, for about 5 minutes then stopped. Could not get it to restart. I could see fuel in the bottom of the air filter bowl. I took the carb off again and it was full of gas. Just ordered the kit you recommended with the new seat. Going to go buy the 10 24 self tap with a spacer and a nut in preparation for when the second rebuild kit comes.
I got a whole commedy sketch on top of what I was looking for, nice !
Nice home made tool, thanks. Good video as usual plus victory dance :>). Hey if you find an outlet for the seat be sure to post. Stay well, Joe Z.
wow, thanks for the videos, i just started back at my friends lawnmower fixing shop. these videos are really helping me catch up to reasonable proficiency.
Great Video.
great vid
Taryl you are the man. One question, I have a Scotts 2554 with 25 ho Kohler. It seems the only way to reconnect the fuel solenoid
wire when not removing carb is to get to it by taking off engine cover.
I could not find a 10/24 self tapper. However, a 10/24 tap at the Big box is $7.00. Also a 1/4” drive 9/32” socket works great as the sleeve. Hope you can pass that along. Thanks for you video
i have the same motor came off a husqvarna and had the same problem but im using the motor on a cc760 cub cadet and im eliminating the fuel pump and the anti backfire thanks for the video
Good information
Good Video, I have a 1992 Craftsman riding mower with a 15.5hp Kohler Command engine with the fuel pump which was running pretty bad( running mostly with the choke on) Watch your video and ordered the -04 kit the one with the special screw tool. Open the carb up and to my surprise, my carb had no sleeve in it just a needle valve, and the fiber needle seat.Took them both out. So I installed the rubber needle seat and the needle valve that were in the package. Put it all together and it runs like a champ I Guess not all Cmd engines with the fuel pump need the sleeve Thanks
My '99 just went. 900 hours. Not engine. Carb. Your 15.5 a 426CC? Took me a while to figure out the Sears are ALL 426CC. Mine is CV-16S. Allegedly 16.5 HP. Threw me off finding things. S means Sears- I think. Switched to 426CC and it got easier. I know this is 7 years later but other people do read this stuff.
Viton is a brand of FKM, a synthetic rubber and fluoropolymer elastomer commonly used in O-rings, chemical-resistant gloves, and other molded or extruded goods.
Good vid.
COURGE. Love it.
GOOD VID !
Hi Taryl, I am a huge fan and have learned a lot from watching your videos. I have a Cub Cadet LT1045 with the Kohler Courage engine and it does have a fuel pump. I am currently rebuilding the carburetor. Based on this video it looks as though I will need the 20 521 02-S. My question is this. Will that kit have everything that I need in it or will I have to buy something additional like you had to do in the video? (For example, the seat) Thanks for any help and keep the videos coming.
you should make a video on how to adjust a carb
hey Taryl.... how about a video showing how to set carb linkages and govenor on a kohler cv25s 69511 engine. i have this thing running after almost a total tear down but the carb and gov are kicking my butt
Really learn a lot from your videos as well as being entertained. Quick question - I have a Courage 22 Kohler engine on a Toro LX460 that ran beautifully for 10 years - no issues. Then all of a sudden started blowing white smoke. Long story short - I ended up putting a cylinder/head gasket on it, did a valve job, as well as reset the valve lash on it. Also cleaned out the carburetor and got a rebuild kit for it. One thing I noticed that it didnt have a welch plug but the welch plug was in the kit - so I went ahead and installed it - My question is does the Walbro carburetor that's on many of these gravity fed carburetors not have a welch plug. Either way it run so much smoother now that I added the one that came with the kit. Anyways wanted to get your professional advice on it. Thanks so much for your videos.
J NULL
Taryl, great video. You showed all the different part # and the different repair kits, but I could not see the part number for the fuel bowl nut to replace that stupid fuel cut-off/anti backfire solenoid. Can you give me the part number for that nut please? Thank you sir and keep up the great work!!!
Hey Taryl,
I replaced the fuel pump, and rebuilt the carb. on a Kohler Command 16hp after watching your videos.
I cannot get it to combust for anymore than a couple of seconds.
Orignal problem was randomly backfiring and then cutting out.
Have you any tips and or suggestions on adjustments.
Thanks - feeling really defeated,
John
question on the channel / mount that the carb goes onto...should one clean this area out with sandpaper or some cleaning solution? mine is quite pitted. I'm leary about getting pieces of crud into the inner parts of the engine if I do this. thoughts...??
This was just the video I needed. If I unhook the wires to that solenoid would that still work? Instead of altering it or putting the plug in just for now. Mine doesn’t backfire when running or shutting down but starting up it does it every single time.
Brian Philbrook it would still run if its solenoid boot is not stuck in upwards position cutting off gas. It works by closing off gas to carb when 12 volts is cut off to the solenoid . Hope this helps some !!
My gravity-fed Command leaks and floods. Shutoff valve is cheaper although I did buy the kit (probably the wrong one), just never got to installing it. The shutoff valve works great so I probably wasted money when I bought that kit a few years ago.
Thank you for the tutorial. I got that poopy clunk clunk clunk waa waa waa first start thing. Cleaned the carb 3 times on my cv740. Now I just use the fuel shutoff valve for a stop leak float till I can get the parts. But hey, if it can mow 4 acres at full throttle and full speed. I can deal with it as long as I have a beer in my cupholder after a few laps. I like my lawnmowers like and to be like my cars. Not a dang bobcat or backhoe or bicycle or Barbie car mowing the yard. Have you seen the 420cc Craftsman's they make? I think the 420 stands for you gotta be high to spend over 1500 on it! Hah!!!
Awesome video as always, funny and educational. I have a Kohler command 25hp and at full throttle it just rinsing getting enough rpm. What is TGIF GTF e best way to increase rpm at full throttle?
Ken Behl talk sweet to it sometimes it works. What is rinsing?? TGIF = thank god it’s Friday lol 😂
you are the fix-it guru! I just bought kohler carb parts kit 12 521 03-s and it came without a viton needle...Ed at propartsdirect called kohler and was told they no longer supply the viton needle valves. I'm having a bear of a time getting the viton seat into the tube they supplied. instructions don't even mention the little viton seat....any help would be appreciated!
Hello. I found the repai/float kit for this carb on Ebay OEM# 32-757-02-s. Or the replacement/ interchangeable carb # 32-853-25-s. Carb is about $30 and rebuild kit from $25-30.
Hah, I love the pine air freshener. That was some rot gut vodka for sure.
Maby I missed it, But is there any adjustments to be made? I mean with the lil jet like screw the head faces the front of the mower.
I'm having problems with finding a nut that will fit a 10/24 self tapper. My local Lowes had nothing to fit. Where can I find this nut. Also, is the self tapper included in the Kohler kit the same size?
hi can you adjust a screw on this carb if its running to lean ...i notice theres a screw up top on left side and a plastic adjuster of some kind below it thanks
Hi Taryl where can I get that screw under the bowl, and what size or spec is it??? My solenoid power cable broke when I was screwing it back on. Will it not start without power to that solenoid if I just screw it on? There was a one red cable going into the bottom that broke.
What would you consider the best lawn mower engine. Great stuff Tera Dacktil.
How dose the governor on one of those engines go? I have one and it revs way too high and throttling it down doesn’t do anything. Any tips?
Awesome video, can you add a link to where we can purchase the parts?
Just replaced fuel pump (caused fuel in crank case) carb replaced last year (I took apart and clean as a whistle) put back together and now surging ? Vent line good, what am I missing ?Any adjustments I can make? I'm ready to give it the sledge hammer.
So my Kroler Cv492S (what's the S for?) ate the 2 throttle body plate screws from the Walbro LMK when the fell off.
It's the original so I'm hoping they are brass and were consumed as I don't find metal on the end of a magnet when steel fishin in the piston hole...
Would you recommend during rebuild. take off that plate and locktite the screws?
Does this carb have or need a throttle return spring? My choke has a spring but the throttle doesn't and the diagram I found online shows it has one. It doesn't seem the one your handling has one
Perfect float level 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤
Oh....the comedy of him tossin the improper needle n' seat......ting ting.....bangle d' bang
Any idea what the part number for the bowl screw to replace the solenoid? Can't find it anywhere.
is that a 3/8 inch carb bowl bolt you put on the carb? im trying to find one to eliminate my switch too
Can you replace the main jet in these carbs? I look down the port that the shut off valve seats to and the jet is way off center. I tried to bend it back to center with a gasket pricking tool but it won't stay.
I have a gravity fed Kohler courage 19 (I belive as the gas tank is up high against the firewall behind the dashboard. Do i still use the kit that you use as the carberator looks the same as yours?
I rebuilt my carb last year I may have used the wrong needle but I did not replace the seat. I don't think it is leaking but running rich which makes me wonder if I used the wrong needle, the needle with out the "plastic" tip
Which video of yours was it that you used purple power to clean it with?
Hi Taryl, I have a Kohler Courage SV725 with a Walbro LMC carburetor that has a surging problem. Any advice on adjustments? This carb is made in Mexico and the number appears to be 32 853 28. The last 8 is messed up and could be a 9. Very strange how the number was stamped on there. Thanks in advanced.
You got part # just for the seat on CMD Gravity Kohler. I have CV12.5
I noticed that carburetor did not have an idle air adjustment screw and I was wondering if it was an aftermarket carburetor?
Thank you, just made me a couple bucks I'm gonna have to buy a sweatshirt soon because you've made me few dollars more than a few times.
is there any benefit to having a fuel pump style mower? seems like alot less to go wrong with gravity feed
Hey taryl I have a Kohler vowing command with a 24 053 90 carb that I am rebuilding. Can you help with a video on that model? Looks a little more complex than this one.
How do I get one of those shirts? I just subscribed and enjoy all your videos. I have a troy bilt horse kohler engine 19.5 that I bought from Blowes last August and have had gas in my oil and all the gas leaked out. Just got a carb kit 22 757 01 S to try and fix whatever the hell is going on. Gettin costly replacing the oil, filter and putting gas in it. Smdh
I leave those anti backfire solenoids off mine and anybody i repair for. i just replace it with a plug.
On kohlers they cost 80+
if you throttle down to idle, and turn the key to off , 99% of the time they don't backfire
+muugatest theres yur dinner! On those solenoids I also just cut the tip off.
So I have a slight backfire at idle so if l put a plug in it would that stop the backfire
thanks
"Theirs a little guppy" 😂😂😂😂
Have you ever align bored a Kohler block and installed a bushing to restore the proper clearance?
So I broke off the top of the flang that the pin goes through that holds the needle/float assembly. I've got it stuck back on with some J B Weld. Do you think that will hold? I hate to think I would have to buy a new carbetrator! Thanks- you are the best.
That might work. You can also try super glue that is impervious to gas. Just glue it on the side thats broke.

Hi, I have been struggling with two cv15 John Deere’s with the same problem. Both with fuel pumps. After mowing 10-20 minutes, floods and stalls. Cleaned carburetors. Swapped carburetors. Installed seat kit like in this video. Tested needle and seat on a test stand like yours, no leaks. Mow 10 minutes and floods. I can’t figure it out and need your wisdom. Please give me a clue.
Did you ever get it figured ot?
