  • In "No Good Deed Goes Unpunished", Taryl goes over the long and lengthy process it takes to do a valve job on this Kohler Magnum 20 engine. This is the engine on Taryl's "Mow Tow" lawn mower tow vehicle. Last week he rebuilt the carb and now he's on to a valve job. Prior to and after the fix, Big Grandma D accuses Taryl and Junior of swapping out her mower for a different one. She even attempts legal action! See how it all plays out in another funny yet informative how-to video from your buddies at Grass Rats Garage! And you know what time it is, time for dinner!! And There's Your Dinner!!

I have a Troy-Bilt Gtx16 with a Briggs Vanguard 16 v-twin and a Troy-Bilt gtx20 with a Magnum M20QS. The Magnum is so much smoother and quiet running compared to the Vanguard 16. I know the Vanguard is supposed to be more efficient and better overall. However, the Magnum runs much better in my opinion.

I have a Kohler Command Vertical 2010 22HP engine in my POC Craftsman lawn tractor. I would start it at times and it would smoke badly for a minute or 2. Under warrantee, I had it checked out and besides a leaky OHV cover. The problem is mostly due to that there are 2 small oil ports that lubricate that area. There are no oil ports to drain the oil so if it sits for a while and if either cylinders valves are open when I turn it off. The oil leaks down the valve stem into the cylinder. What a stupid design!

I like most of your videos but sorry to say you still haven't done a valve job on one of those engines.
A proper valve job requires grinding/machining the valve seats as well as the valves.
Lapping In the ground valves is required practice but doesn't make the seat properly prepared to mate with the valve
I know it's not the space shuttle, just saying

A tolerance of .003 to .006 for valve lash means .003 is the minimum. You set the lash to only give yourself .000015625 (that's 1/64th) of wear (on the valve and valve seat) before you're out of spec. Next time go as high on the spec as possible. Which in this case, you would have .003 before you're out of spec. You want longevity...right? No Hamm's for a week Mr.!
