This video Saved My Dinner! Didn't blow a gasket but 3 bolts were loose, and one very close to getting sheared! All's good now. Cleaned and replaced one at a time with Loc-Tite. Thanks Taryl!
I used to be so annoyed by the openings of your vids but now i know there's lots of useful info to follow and you make it funny as you go along, thanks for your efforts. And btw i now watch them from beginning to end haha!
Was having issues with my Kohler SV600 cranking, adjusted the valves and nothing, made sure the valve seats were good and nothing. Read about the compression release crap (did not look fun), but I used this video to learn how to tear the top of the engine apart and sure enough the spring on the compression release was broke. I know this is a guide for replacing the gasket but the little extra tid bits of info on the cam gears and everything helped me fix mine, ended up replacing the whole gear and lever to the "updated" one since I was in there. Runs like a top now, for about 60$ and a couple hours of work. Thanks Taryl, your videos are super informative and entertaining.
I know this comments a couple years old now but do you remember what gear you ordered for the compression release? I'm having the same exact issue with mine and it seems like a loose spring is the culprit.
I enjoy watching Taryl. I stumbled onto this video and a few others when searching for videos on how to repair a problem I was having. I was working on a Kohler Courage 20HP SV600 engine. After watching this video and few that pertained to my engine I was able to get my riding mower back up and running! Very helpful and informative videos with comedy! I do agree it does take courage to work on a Kohler courage engine! Thanks Taryl and keep the videos and comedy coming!
Anytime I get cussin mad working on mowers I end up finding the answers here. At that point the comedy sure helps. I'd dare to say this is one of the top 10 most underrated channels on youtube. Yall have save my ass many times. Thanks and STAY WITH IT!?
Thanks for a very helpful and informative video. I followed your instructions and fix went perfectly. Oi leak had been driving me crazy. A shop near me in Ill wanted $400 to $500 to repair. But, thanks to you it just cost me for parts. The crack in the housing seems to be nothing more than an engineering screw up. I've seen at least 4 Cub Cadets, including mine, with a hairline crack in the exact same location. This must be from the torque exerted on the crank shaft when PTO is engaged. In the future I intend to cut the idle down to idle before engaging the PTO. This seems to worke as the heavy stress on the cam is almost eliminated. Here's hoping it lasts. Thanks again. You really know your stuff.
Got 3 Kroler Courage, one cracked block epoxyed up, will check head bolts on others after watching Taryl fix this one. Great video and Lawnmower Detectives ROCK!!!!
Thanks a bunch. Your videos are both entertaining and educational. You've saved my bacon several times and saved me a lot of head scratchin and beard strokin.
Lucky me had to perform this operation on a friends Courage 20 today in a TORO 460. What a POS these engines are !! Block was also cracked in two places, alignment pins just wobbling around in their elongated holes. Valve cover was leaking as well as the head gasket. It's also burning oil as the rings are shot. I can move the piston side to side in the cylinder with ease, just as you had shown in one of your recent videos, Taryl. Thank you for all of your informative and at times crazy videos. LOL Stay healthy !!
Just performed this fix on my Kohler Courage 21 in my Toro Zero Turn Mower last night. This video took the worry out of me screwing up the fix. Your videos are funny and very educational - I wouldn't have tried this if I hadn't seen your video. You saved me hundreds of dollars by doing it myself! Thanks! Just one step took a while for me to solve -Taking out the Bolt from the Flywheel. My flywheel kept on turning while I was trying to remove the bolt. I had to fabricate a large wrench out of two rubber oil filter wrenches that I put around the rim of the flywheel so that I could hold it still while I removed the bolt. How did you make it look so easy to remove the bolt without securing the flywheel?
A couple tips, I drilled a 1/8" hole in the heads of all the engine cover bolts like old military reciprocating aircraft engines and laced them all together with wire to prevent them from losing up. Locktite did not seem to work on the first attempt, probley not clean enough. This takes about an hour. Oh, a second tip that made me undo all my putting-together work, I completely removed the governor linkage, and that governor's arm you mentioned naturally flipped 180 degrees without me noticing it was in the wrong position and I put the engine cover back on. Make sure the governor's arm on the outside of the case is pointed up!
Great video. I did all this work on my SV540 this weekend, with updated cam, lifter, valve cover, and starter. Your video was so good that I did not have to refer back to it while doing the work. Thank you!
Howd you go with timing? Is it possible to be 180° out? I've noticed there's 2 different piston stages to when you line up the dots on main gear and IN LEFT EX RIGHT.
@@readthebibleforyourself.7939 I don't think it's possible if you line up the marks. Either I got lucky and got it right the first try, or it's not possible. Looking at the head side of the engine, intake is on the right, exhaust is on the left. The cam gears are the same, the exhaust cam gear gets the compression release and the intake doesn't. Line up the IN mark on the intake cam gear with the dot on the crank, and the EX mark on the exhaust cam with the other dot on the crank. There are only two dots on the crank, so before removing cam gears rotate everything so it lines up and you should be fine. Right after he removes the crankcase side cover he shows this in the video.
@@snapforth yes very true mate, but there's a second stage also. I've basically cranked the piston all the way up to its top dead centre point and lined it all up. I'll find out Tomorrow if I blow the engine once all gaskets and welds are cured 😂
@@snapforth the alignment can be made with piston up and piston down. Hard to explain.. A full revolution with the piston/ crank shaft has 2 stages in which you can line up those 2 dots with intake and exhaust. 1-piston all the way up in the chamber. 2-piston all the way down. I've set my timing with the piston all the way up.
Great video! Very well explained. Great sense of humor. Love the part that it's not the space shuttle LOL!! Much appreciated, now I know how to fix my LT1045. Many thanks. Pascal from Canada.
I love your videos. You obviously have a lot of experience with small engines and know how tight the various bolts should be. But for most of us newbies following the torque specs can ensure that we do not under tighten or over tighten the fasteners. I just worked on a Kawasaki engine and it wanted the 10mm valve cover bolts torqued to 5.9Nm (4.3 ft lb). Had I just tightened them by hand it would have been very easy to over tighten them.
TD, Great job as always. Only a matter of time until I see you and the boys on a late night talk show. I'd love to see some tractor cases that stumped even the Grass Rats, before you finally figured it out. I am a prejudice regarding lawn equipment, I'm a tractor guy, the other stuff seems like it cost more in parts and time to fix than they are worth. Thanks Mick from Southbury, CT
When i was little my dads push mower broke and we couldn't mow our lawn and my aunt kept telling him to come borrow there riding mower so he finally went over there and got it and he made one pass with it and it threw a rod and he took the oil filter off and it was clogged with black slugg and the oil was black amd the oil filter was the original one that came on the mower and it was like 6 years old
Ive got the courage 20, just about everything that could go wrong has, terrible engine. But thanks to you its still running. It ran with little to no oil, and scared up the crank, took it out buffed it out, stuck it back in and off it went. I hold my breath every time it starts. just seeing how far I can push this junker.
Thank you so much for your detailed and valuable info, which is very well presented. you guys are the best. did the gasket and governor on cub cadet xt1, you saved me a bunch of $$$$ cause I didn't have to take it to the shop. Keep up the good work it's truly appreciated.
This video saved me. I had one running wild. Decided to try and replace the governor. Pulled top plate. Cam came with it. Would have never been able to figure it.
I just saw the "Good luck on your retirement Mr.Rodby!" video here in class. I can't find it on your channel (must of been a shared link) but I just wanna say, that was cool and Rodby loved it.
This video was extremely helpful. And that "double broken" bolt you did you'd never seen before? Mine is the same, and the dame bold position. And my locator pin journal is completely busted out. Have to go hunting in the bottom of the crankcase for pieces. Thanks again!
Mine started smoking last night mulching leafs. The same freaking bolt had broke and the bolts next to the broken one had come lose also. Great video thank you now I’ll fix it this morning
love the vids man ! I have a suggestion! whenever the "Grass Rats" music cuts in during your repair, why not do the " bouncing ball" over the lyrics at the bottom of the video so we can all sing along !? yeah! keep the vids coming! I have to refer to them at least two or three times a week! Thank you!
This fault has happened to our Mountfield ride on mower and the block has cracked. When I looked it up on the net I couldn't believe how common the problem is. How has Kohler got away with this ?? Taryl, Wow what a video intro and ending, Lol. It would of been funny if the real cops came round while you were filming !!
I was given a broken Cub Cadet with a 20HP Courage engine. The engine was fine; a spindle was broken off. I fixed it. I haven’t had problems, but I’ll check the torque on these bolts just in case.
Finally a honest mechanic I couldn’t agree more that is the sorriest engine ever made I got one outside with exactly 532 hours and I just took a coffee can full of busted parts out of the oil pan I think a tecumshi is even best than a Koehler courage.
Hey Thanks I have a bent exhaust push rod on my fathers a 17 kolher courage ( has almost no hours on it) was looking for a video on the internals of that motor and this covered it. I was able to look down the push rod sleeve with a light looks like it has no cam leaver in front of the cam so going to take it apart today and see what up. Keep up the good work
Thank-you Taryl, now I know how to replace the exhaust cam. Mine broke cause of that plastic.ahhhhhhhh. You are the best . I'm a new subscriber now.👍👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇲🇨🇦👍👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺🍺
Just found this channel after picking up a Troy-Bilt with a Kohler Courage 590s. These videos are awesome while still being extremely informative. Any recommendations to keep an eye out for with my new (to me) Troy-bilt?
I think the torque thing gets a little crazy, I just use common sense and I can tell about how much to tighten bolts and not twist them off. and the new Kohlers aren't what the older ones were, too much plastic and pot metal.
I have a Yard man with this engine in it. Its 14 years old and the valve cover just started leaking this season. It has run flawlessly. Have about 270 hours on it.
Awesome video ! Mine also have the straight key but in the parts diagram calls for the half moon.. I guess it doesnt matter ? Im troubleshooting backfiring, surging issue..
I can't believe this customer wants to fix this thing. they are junk new nevermind with a cracked block. it's not a chevelle, it's a damn lawnmower. with that in mind you do great work.
Great video ! Thank you. I'm helping an elderly neighbor with his Cub cadet that has a 19 HP Kohler Courage SV590-003 engine. He said it was bought very used and never ran great; but lately it sputtered and backfired every time he used it till it finally would not start. The carb was all corroded so I changed that and it still would not start. Weak spark so I checked coil and had to replace that as well. Still a no go. Then I checked timing key which I did not suspect because it's a rider so there is no direct connection to the blades which I thought would prevent timing key issues. Wrong. I replaced timing key which is very small by the way for a 19 hp engine; in fact about the size of some I have replaced on 5-7 hp engines. I replaced the key and the new one sheared off immediately and the engine tried to fire a bit and would crank over but just an occasional backfire. I am hoping I did not tighten flywheel enough like you mentioned in this video that could shear the key. Any ideas. A small engine mechanic friend told me he worked on a Kohler Courage that would sputter and backfire and found out that the cam had shifted considerably. This ever happen to you?
Hey guy's I'm sure you have plenty of people asking you to do video's, so here is mine. Can you do one on that crappy Kohler courage throttle and governor adjustment from scratch. Iv'e been looking for one on youtube for a while and can't find one. Great video's guys keep them up.
Just got ltx1040 used it's got 140 hours, looks like the valve gasket is already leaking a tiny, but this bucket gasket seems okay, would you unbolt and just loctite all the bolts without replacing gasket? You guys are great!
thank you very much that was a very informative video I knew something like that would be similar to one I worked on but wanted to see what the story was with the cracked bucket not really sure the best way to do it other than getting a welder to weld aluminum back together
I have a kohler Command 15 Pro Series. The bottom gasket just started leaking a little. Do you have a video fix for the replacement of the gasket or should not worry about it?
Did the engine stop working? And how did you diagnose it? Was there oil spewed everywhere? Thank you for your videos they are informative and entertaining!
Mine did the same thing last night it started smoking by the Muffler and there was oil dripping everywhere on it. I shut it off to see what was going on. Mine ended up being the same broken bolt and the ones next to it were lose. Oil had went all over the engine and it was still running when I shut it off. Pretty sure with the oil I was losing if I had not shut it off it would have seized up
I've never had a bucket motor or a Krohler. So was the whole design principle with these motors to prevent oil leaks? I don't know why else you'd build a lawnmower engine fully enclosed in cast aluminum. Very interesting stuff!
I changed the top cover gasket , when putting in a used motor. The old 20 hp sv600 0003 which cracked the block , had a washer on top of the two cam shaft gears , but the 19hp sv590 3220 , only had one on the exhaust cam . I looked at a parts breakdown and it showed a washer on top of each cam gear. So I put one on each cam gear , assuming it was lost when I pulled the cover , or just forgotten when assembled . What do you think , is it necessary or does it not matter one way or the other?
I will keep the 1971 Simplicity mower my Dad bought new and keep it going. Heck with this new stuff with plastic cams, and governors in the engine... Anyways the quality of your videos is waaaaaaaay above the crappy small engines made these days. Thanks for the information and laughs.
Just waiting for my Kohler to go bad given RUclips hates them. Made in 2007 and still runs like new. Mine's the courage 15 not these 19s I keep seeing on here so are the 15's better or something? Are they the same just bigger jugs? As a Briggs/Honda lover this engine is one of the best things I've got.
I had an 18hp motor do the same thing as in this video. Kohler motors vibrate like a bucking bronco. Had the exact same bolt to shear off too. I couldn't believe when I looked in the Service Manual for Kohler for that the Closure Plate Torques Down to 216 in. lbs. that is crazy.

Thank-you Taryl, now I know how to replace the exhaust cam. Mine broke cause of that plastic.ahhhhhhhh. You are the best . I'm a new subscriber now.👍👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇲🇨🇦👍👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺🍺
This is classic! What's next lawnmower Rockford Files??
Awesome video just completed this on my troy-bilt xp horse saved me lot of time an money
Can tell Teryl has the 4.2L in the F150
I learn so much from you ❤ thanks Brother
I like how the thumbnail looks like Taryl is about to honk Rosie the robot’s knockers.
Thanks for adding fun to an excellent video you answered all my questions.
i need more lawnmower detectives!
What a terrific video... Thanks for making it. Every time i use my cub cadet... I learn about how to fix a part that just broke each week. smh.
Really enjoy your vids!
Very good lesson to have
Enjoyed this video...347am in australia..cheers mate
thank you very much that was a very informative video I knew something like that would be similar to one I worked on but wanted to see what the story was with the cracked bucket not really sure the best way to do it other than getting a welder to weld aluminum back together
Pretty sure with the oil I was losing if I had not shut it off it would have seized up
Un garagiste qui a de l'humour et qui explique bien les choses ....dans sa langue natale !
Excellent video! Enjoyed the instructional; part but the skit was awesome! Put the cutters down!!
I can’t imagine what it would be like sitting around a campfire sipping a few and listening to crazy stories.
Nice video! Are these particular engines worth repairing on older mowers or is it best to replace it or get a newer zero turn?
Great job!! Thank you
I will keep the 1971 Simplicity mower my Dad bought new and keep it going. Heck with this new stuff with plastic cams, and governors in the engine... Anyways the quality of your videos is waaaaaaaay above the crappy small engines made these days. Thanks for the information and laughs.
One of the funniest yet.
Btw, these Kohlers are a disgrace... I almost lost it at the plastic cam sprockets..
Wouter d.B. briggs & stratton do the same thing in some of their engines
My 2006 Kohler 19 still going strong. Other than scheduled maintenance, I replaced the solenoid on the carburetor last year.
Thanks mate, helped a lot
You are awesome..
And very knowledgeable too..
I recommended a video about this over a year ago I guess better late than never LOL
