ROFL. Your video just made a lot of KETO eaters very happy. Yes, a soup pot would have been better. ROFL.
At least it's healthy, with all that exercise.
This is one of my favorite receipts. I've never seen John dislike a dish before.
Is there a playlist of recipes chef John made that he ended up hating?
Chef John, Chef John, CHEF JOHN!
Question: What if you added some finely grated onion in there, and instead of baking them on a sheet, you could press the unbaked, cooled off mixture in little ice cube trays (the ones with the silicone bottoms), and freeze them, and after they're frozen, bake them like frozen tater tots? Yes? No? Maybe so?
"Everything went exactly as planned, except for the end where is was supposed to turn out good."
Spoilers
We've all had that happen, something new that we tried and ended up wishing we'd just ordered Pizza instead.
Thank you Chef John, this was actually fun, watching someone else doing all that prep, just to finally realize, Well, I won't be doing that again!
Pure Gold, that! At that point I just gave up and slid out of my chair! My God, How great was that?
🤣🤣🤣
This is why I love this channel
I don't think i have ever laughed so hard at a food wishes video.
Thank you for making this chef so I don't ever have to.
The problem is all that thrice-cooked cauliflower taking up space where more cheese could be.
Here's the best procedure for making cauliflower fries:
1. Blitz a head of cauliflower in a food processor just like in this video.
2. Now throw the processed cauliflower into your compost bin.
3. Cut cheese sticks from a variety of your favorite cheeses.
4. Dredge in egg, flour, and breadcrumbs
5. Deep fry 'em
6. Presto! Cauliflower fries!
balzonurchin 😂👏
I made your cauliflower fries recipe. Perfect for quarantine!
You are my hero
I bow down to you, you have obviously reached the point of culinary master
Can I use frozen cauliflower?
Let me explain why you are awesome, Chef John. Many, many, many people cultivate an image of themselves on social media that involves showing the best stuff with the right filters. And then other people get depressed when their own messy actual life doesn't match up to someone else's carefully crafted presentation of a life. You gave us a recipe that just plain didn't work out, with your trademark wit and dad jokes. I commend you, sir. You are the Norman Mailer of your cauliflower failure.
Matt Burnside absolutely perfect! The Norman Mailer of your Cauliflower failure. 😂🤣
Yes! All these recipe videos make the recipes look so easy. If I watched this without the commentary, I'd have no idea that he found it as frustrating as I find a lot of recipes. Maybe there's hope for me as a cook yet!
Agree
Matt Burnside so true!
LMAO ♥️💯🤣🤣🤣🤣
I tried this as fast as I could except with a few substitutions: the cauliflower was replaced by potatoes and all the wasted work by a walk to the fast food place down the block.
"Be the masters of our disaster" 😂😂 this whole video was gold
"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should" - Dr Ian Malcolm
Love that movie. 🦖🦕
perfectly said
"Sure I could have filmed something different, and you never would have known about this, but I just didn't want to cheat you out of a chance to make fun of me."
YOU sir, are a man of the people.
so I had to let you know my 4 1/2 year old daughter and I watch your videos every night. she says she wants to be a chef and she puts "cayenne" into everything. so thank you for your videos and encouraging her want to be a chef!
If you had not called these 'crappy' cauliflower sticks, I would not have bothered watching the video. I came upon this recipe by accident, but between calling them 'crappy' and expressing how to 'waste a day', I HAD to watch! I love your channel, my daughter and her wife loves your channel and this video made my day!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your sense of humor! Great job!
Your daughter and her wife? Hol up
King Kazama Wut? :/
King Kazama people be gay
I, too, only watched it because he called it crappy and said he wasted a day. I knew it was going to be funny.
One should always blend cauliflower in a garbage disposal. The prep work is over faster, and the meal tastes better. But thanks for the best 8 minutes about cauliflower I’ve had in years. Keep up the good work!
Russ Kvavle Gave me a good laugh, thanks.
Russ Kvavle 😂
This is too funny! Bwahahahaha!
🤣🤣
Chef John please pin this comment to the top. Its gold
'I just didn't want to cheat you out of the chance to make fun of me'. And that, Chef John, is why we love you
Chef John. You never fail to put a smile on my face. Thanks for making a bad day a whole lot better.
"We need to be the masters of our disasters, because that's how we learn and grow."
He's right! We need to tell young hesitant cooks this...lol
"We must be the Master's of Our Disasters" Classic Chef John...
am i the only one who likes to fall asleep listening to these videos? i really enjoy his voice. you either hate it or love it but i love it. really comforting.
alona tovar no you're not. I too watch the videos before sleeping because they are quite calming, even though I dislike they way he intonates
alona tovar me too!
BatsAreCuties M.
Yup
haha too relateable, always happens to me in the afternoons after work :/ haha
BatsAreCuties M. Ya when I first started listening I hated it, but now I really enjoy it
Maybe stick them in a dehydrator over night. Then they would be 36 Hour Crappy Crunchy Cauliflower Sticks.
our just leave them out on the driveway...
LOL
June Lovell they burn with our summer heat here in eastern Australia
I'm a private chef and I've been building my business the last few years, and Chef John has taught me many last minute lessons when I was trying new recipes that I had no clue about, or just wanted to learn new techniques to expand my menu. But this was possibly the most important episode so far, that you are the "Masters of your own Disaster." The Chef John's equivalent to Bob Ross's "Happy little accidents." A true master is always a student, and cooking just like any other craft, requires experimentation. Sometimes when I fumble a good meal, it's always because I forgot the basics, or because I was trying something new and it didn't work. A lot of people would quit in that situation, but a true chef will go back to the drawing board, take a deep breath and make sure his next attempt is worlds better.
I've been watching Chef John for almost half a decade now, and I love this! John, if you read this, I want you to know my story:
I was taught to cook by my mom by the time I could reach the counter. She is also a trained professional chef. I've always had a firm grasp on food, nutrition, and flavor. Then I started to browse pinterest. The amount of absolutely ridiculous "healthy" recipes is mind boggling. I read these posts from food bloggers and think, "That's not how food works." This video is the absolute BEST answer to how I feel about some of these recipes. Thanks, man. I needed this laugh!
One thing I appreciate about your channel is when you do something that just doesn't work right, or you realize you made a mistake, you don't edit it out, omit it or otherwise pretend it either went great or never happened. I love the authenticity, and I feel like I learn more for your channel this way
Why, I love wasting days making crappy food!
Woleyy, You're a funny kitter Kat. : ) I have the same kind of humor, that makes people say, "Whaaaaat?"
You two are both fuckin weird ^
Max Werner no, you're just not weird enough
hahaha
Who doesn't want to spend a day in their underwear making crappy fries?
You have a hilarious 'Sing-song' vocal cadence. It is hypnotic. :)
"You really don't know how truly stupid something is until you try it".... loved it! 😊😊 Thank you for sharing one of your ultimate disappointments. Love your channel more because of it.
"In the kitchen you really don't know how truly stupid something is until you actually try it"
This is a fact. I thought trying to deep-fry frozen fish fillets was stupid until I did it and burned a great deal of skin off of my arm and concluded that it was actually EXTREMELY stupid.
Alcohol helps
"In fact, if I did this again....which I wont...."😂 pretty much how I feel every time I try a cauliflower reinvented recipe of anything lol
This is the first food wishes video I ever watched a couple years ago. I found it really entertaining and weirdly comforting. I have never stopped watching since then. And I also later found out that all recipes weren't crappy, which I first thought was sort of the theme or genre for this channel. Infact, I have even tried out a few of the simpler recipes. Big fan of you, Chef John!
omg healthy food on this channel? are you okay, chef john? is somebody holding you hostage? add two pinches of cayenne if you need help.
*binds it together with cheese*
This video is an example of why Chef doesn't usually include healthy food on his channel. He doesn't like to waste people's time.
shut it
Amazing the number of humourless folks commenting on this fun post. OP, I got it...lolz
Hey, wait a minute! His EXCELLENT refried beans recipe is very healthy -- and with the lard also provides vitamin D...!
Yeah... no. I feel your pain. I love cauliflower. I've tried several recipes designed to make cauliflower something it's not... cauliflower mashed potatoes, cauliflower sticks, cauliflower rice. It always ends up the same - something that tastes like tortured cauliflower and not good tortured cauliflower. The cauliflower mashes? Even our pig wouldn't touch it. You've been warned...
R. McBride I love cauliflower mashed potatoes.
I hate cooked cauliflower! Turns me in to a farting machine! I hate it so much!
Pickled on the other hand.... I prepare it in barrels, add whole green tomatoes and pickles and green melons... Im done, imma stuff my face with pickled vedgies right now.
You guys have a pig?! :D
Have you tried his cauliflower Alfredo recipe? It's amazing!!!!!!!!
I thought mashed cauliflower was good? I wanted to try it out soon...
I'm doing keto and if it weren't for this video I might have been tempted to actually make this recipe. Thank you for talking me out of it!
I've watched this before, and I'll never make it, but I have to watch it just to hear your comments.
I have frequently been "the master of my disaster" in the kitchen. I feel your pain. .
Who else sings at the end "And as always, enjoy!" 😁
Everyone
I sing it in the shower and driving to work!
That was probably one of the funniest food wishes videos I've ever seen.
This is why I love your channel John, I could listen to anything you narrate anything you make and learn
If I told anyone I spent 8 minutes watching a recipe demonstration for crappy baked cauliflower sticks, AND ENJOYED WATCHING, they'd think I am crazy. Thanks, Chef John for the entertainment.
You are the Dan Quayle of your Baked Cauliflower Fail
Dan cooks cauliflower faux fries so that he doesn't have to encounter the word 'potatoe' again
Or maybe the Maxine Waters or Nancy Pelosi
LOL 🤣
That's where I go when you're on vacation chef, thanks for recommending it :)
"I'm glad I wore pants"
Love your sense of humor and honesty about recipes.
Gotta love Chef John lol. Still entertaining as hell to watch. Mate you need your own show on television.
May be because you forgot to add Cayenne?
He added it though :p
Oh, I missed it. Though it was not enough for a successful recipe.
@burman sd Chef John added the "obligatory 2 shakes of cayenne" right after the black pepper...

+Various Curious thank you Johnny Cochran.
a few months ago my boyfriend saw me watching your videos and loves everything u make. now hes on a mission to get me to make everything on your channel. we enjoy at least one of your recipes every week. WE LOVE YOUUUU
First food wishes video I ever saw, one year ago. Been watching and cooking avidly ever since! Thanks Chef John.
I like the honesty in the title
This is slowly becoming a satire channel and I'm here for it, chef John.
you lift my day.....everything you do makes me happy...
Priceless! Thank you for the entertainment and honesty. This is the best way to be cheered up on a cold rainy day. Vivien 🌷🌷🌷
Chef, it's hard to "make fun" of someone who is as pleasantly self-deprecating as you are. One of your signature features. Enjoyed the video. And I will NOT try this one.
I don't know... but it actually looked quite tasty!
I would dip it in my fave spaghetti sauce... 😊❤🤗
This guy has an extremely consistent vocal rhythm.
Yea its fucking horrible - everythng - goes up a the end
@@Davisimo69 NEAR the end. Then it trails off. It's like a fricking bell curve skewed to the right. Made it 4 minutes into the video but I think I would go nuts if I watched anymore!
@@dereka64 Three mins better than me 😂 I was off after one
Yeah well, his fans love him, and get so that they like that style. It's part of the humor you guys just don't get it
@@l.m.mccormick1470 exactly, he's not taking himself very seriously.
You know, I really love how you made a "failure" in the kitchen still seem so much like a day in life. Despite the video not really being a recipe one might try in the kitchen, the words you said at the end are just so meaningful. Thank you for sharing about this!
Anyone else come here specifically to hear Cef John say, "If I make these again, which I won't..."?
I would love to see you take over for Gordon Ramsay in Hell's Kitchen!
Just for one season.
I don't watch Hell's Kitchen because of that buffoon Gordon Ramsay.
Prince Popcorn it's more of a slow psyche breaking i think
Mahd I think it's for people who don't have PTSD who are in a hurry to get it....
Bastian Fjeld Same here! I dont even watch Hell's Kitchen because I can't stand to hear how abusive he is to those poor contestants.
I wonder if they'd come out better if you'd actually deep-fry them? Maybe breading them first somehow?
ChrisC Like tempura cauliflower? That sounds awesome
Tempura is battered, not breaded, but that could work too.
idk about fried sticks of cauliflower, but actual just plain breaded and fried cauliflower is actually extremely delicious. Had never tried it until I moved to the midwest and apparently its like kind of a common thing here, go figure
I was wondering the same thing. With an egg wash and some Panko, these would turn out nice and crispy in the deep fryer. Tempura batter would probably work too.
I agree! Must not give up on the recipe!
I laughed tears, as I just did a 3.5 h cauliflower pizza last weekend
This cracks me up. Far and away my favorite Chef John recipe yet!
one of my favorite videos by you. I love the willingness to make mistakes and share them. As a RUclipsr, you can upload only your successes or whatever edited version of reality you want us to see. Plus, I dig your life advice. keep up the good work.
Watched many videos of yours before but never subscribed. Your humor in this video sold it to me. Just subbed
Love the honesty. I'm way too lazy for this though. Just watching this made me tired :')
Oh, and the fact that it had a million steps makes me cherish it that much more! Thank you thank you thank you!!! 🤗
I would love to see a video on fried pickles.
7:24-7:37 is what made me subscribe
Great decision.
0:55 made me subscribe
0:55 made me activate that bell notification since I already was subscribed.

You may hate this recipe Chef John but some of us appreciate it as it gives us another way to cook cauliflower. So cheers to you!
As a longtime listener first time caller, I really appreciate your culinary honesty as well as your ability say that sucked so to speak. Jolly good show Chef John....🥃
You are of course, the John Jacob Astor, of your cauliflower bakin' disaster.
.....I'll show myself out.
When I read your comment, i heard it in Chef John's voice! I think laughter has depleted my oxygen level and I'm giddy! Thank you!
Oh my gosh, I lol'ed so hard at this. You're the best, Chef John!
Chef John's honesty is so refreshing!
Your 'nasal monotone' is a good foil for your humor as well as your acumen in assessing the recipe and I dare say 'taste'. Thoroughly enjoyed this as well as other recipe videos that you've put forth. Keep them coming!
The inflections in your voice, do it for me every time.
Lessons learned from failure are very valuable, thanks for sharing this with us.
I love this! Please show us more failed recipes once in a while! I think I'm a decent cook considering I've learned mostly from watching my mom and some trial and error but I get so deflated from failing a meal. Seeing someone I get ideas and recipes from fail but totally own it and STILL post the recipe fills me with determination.
Also it was a hilarious video. Thank you!
I really appreciate the fact that you're willing to share when a recipe doesn't work out, rather than trying to pretend to be flawless.
For any keto folks wanting to try this....chef spread the batter twice too thick in that caserole dish, that was the fatal flaw. Spread on a parchment lined cookie sheet, very thin, and they turn out crunchy, and tasty. Mozzarella instead of cheddar, more cheese on top for that final crisp after cutting into strips, cheddar works well for that step. and they pair well with a fresh made aouli, rather than the obligatory ketchup.
Lmao! I love this video. Let's be honest, most of us are here just to listen to you talk anyway... we really don't intend on ever making these things 😛
I love how you somehow make great, easy-to-follow cooking videos that also consistently get a unexpected laugh or two out of me. ARE YOU LISTENING, FOOD NETWORK? This vid's title is a perfect example. Please keep up the good work!
Your honesty is deeply appreciated.
HILARIOUS! Felt like I was watching a parody of a recipe... great stuff, chef!
Looks like something I'd punish my husband with. *continues watching *
Lmao oh I love your coment
😅😅
So funny!
This is the video that got me hooked on Chef John. Still makes me smile.
You were so honest about the results! Just love your channel, John!
this is one of your best videos - and i've seen them all. philosophy cooking at it's best and i bet, it still tasted good.
ps. please tell me where i can get a freakishly small spoon. come on!
"And thank God I was wearing pants" 😂😂😂
Thank you for your honesty. I was almost ready to try it. because ALL your recipes are so good.
I, too, was drawn in by the fact that you called them "crappy" cauliflower fries... I laughed through the entire video. So thank you for posting, as it was not only endlessly entertaining, but it will save me from trying to make these myself. 😂😂😂
Happy cooking!
Absolutely hilarious. You rock.
OK, the recipe was lousy, but the commentary made the video awesome.
And as always, I love you... you’re my favourite chef 👨🍳 ever! Please never change 🤗
I have watched many many food wishes videos and this is, by far, Chef John's funniest ! What a great guy
I love your honesty!
Chef John, this is why I love you. Don't change a thing. You're just perfect.
Soooo fcukin funny!!
This is the bestest video in the culinary Catagory of RUclips! And by the way, this is why we all have the local pizza place stored on our phones
I love you, Chef John! Glad to know all this work was not even better than roasted cauliflower!
Your videos are always so entertain, I love your voice also. It is so nice and comforting to see even great chefs not always get the best results every time; thank you for that. What else you have done in a "crappy" way?
Chef John is the wiz kid of wisdom.
Love your honesty Chef John!
One of the greatest cooking videos ever! It's nice to find a chef that tells us "don't do it, it's crap"
"We need to be the masters of our disasters"
I came here for a recipe, and walked away with life advice.
Dying laughing over here! Mad props, Chef! 😄👏👏👏
"We have to be Masters of our Disasters", you absolutely right on this. Thank you , I love your unique recipes.
