You’re so right, it really is one of the best things to eat. I’m making this for thanksgiving which sounds a little weird. Thank you!
Love Baklava, both Greek and Armenian versions...two different recipes and two absolutely delicious!
God bless you.. beautiful video
Thank you so much, we have always been wondering how we can make some awesome baklava. It's honestly one of the best desserts it's sweet, flaky, a little bit savory. So delicious!
My first time making this dessert. It was delicious. Really like it. Lucky there is descriptions about recipe that i can read. Sorry to tell its so annoying to hear the sound how he talks. Prefer mute it n watch the video and read the description. Anyway thanks for sharing the recipe
“If you feel you have a much better way, feel free to keep that to yourself.” LOOOOOOOOOOOL
dumb idiot dude, making somewhat magic:D
😂 when did he say that?
Sone 00:27
I actually liked that. No nonsense attitude.
@@fridayschild722 me, too. I may use the comment myself in the future
He sounds like he's recording this from a merry-go-round and trying to say as much as he can each time he comes back around to the mic.
Great, simple recipe though! Will definitely try it out!

When I first heard his voice, I couldn’t get over the way he talks. I made fun of it constantly but in time, it became comforting and now I don’t even notice. You too will come to like it. *chants: ONE OF US

I love that when you speak, you can actually hear the *comma*

I can’t take it!!!!!
omg i never thought of it that way lmao
That fucking inflection.
"Like when you add a pinch of Cayenne... You don't really notice it's presence but you may notice its absence. ".... This spoke to me on many levels

"we are not machines, we are human and things are gonna happen" that made me feel better about myself wtf
As a cybernetic organism, have you seen John Connor?

I don't generally like sweets but....good Baklava will blow your mind. Seriously.
James Patrick PREEEEEACH! I just had some from BROOKLYN BAKLAVA here in NYC that it made look for it on here to see how to make one! IT WAS AMAZING! 🙌🏾
The best baklava I've had was at the Greek Festival in Charlotte NC. They had several different versions and if I had the money i would have gotten them all.
A traditional turkish bakery in my city has amazing baklava! A well made baklava is like biting into a piece of heaven. So good..

"... otherwise I would have had to fill up the time with bad puns, and nobody wants that"
But we all want that.
When I was a kid, my Greek friend's mother used to make these for the holidays. WHAT A TREAT!!! I had no idea it was this easy to make. THANK YOU VERY MUCH CHEF JOHN!!!
Well, Chef John, now you have to make a video that is nothing but bad puns and vague references. The people demand it.
Look up the video titled, "Chef John Rhymin' and Stealin'."
i will even watch a Chef John video about how to boil water
CovfefeAddict Gonna have plenty of time to give it the ol tappa tapp when you're LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER.
Vale LOL
me too!
One more thing people, after you pour the syrup on the baklava, DO NOT COVER IT! It'll steam and make the baklava soggy, I've made baklava about 7 times, and the first time, I covered it and it got soggy, then the second time I didn't boil the syrup long enough so it didn't get absorbed by the pastry, and also the syrup and pastry were both hot, so it was just horrible, so remember to pour the syrup once its cooled over the still hot pastry, then it'll get absorbed quicker and properly. Again, DO NOT EVER COVER YOUR BAKLAVA WHEN IT IS IN THE PROCESS OF ABSORBING SYRUP.
soggy baklava. Okay shoot me
Mister Af - thanks! I'd hate to do all that work then ruin it at the end.
Yup, you're correct, my mom's rule is to pour hot syrup on cold baklava or cold syrup on hot baklava so that it stays crunchy.
Mister Af thanx
You're all welcome. Sorry for not replying, I didn't know you commented, good luck cooking!

Have you guys considered adoption? I mean I'm 28 but don't let that stop you from giving a guy a good home that comes with Baklava.
KingTomato117 lol! ... no but I can send you to live with my mother in law. See makes good Baklava 🤣
I use cardamom because I just like it better. I don't care about being authentic. XD. Also, my partner is Greek so I get a free pass.

Am I the only one who could literally sit here and listen to his narrative all day. I feel like my nice friendly uncle is tea hing me these recipes and I actually take in everything, which I sometimes find hard with other channels. Will be trying this over the weekend. Love the recipe, so simple and easy to follow. 💜
You are not alone!
Me too! I love his voice and superb teaching skills ❤
I made this and it was inCREDible. Because I used store-bought phyllo dough it took hardly any time at all. Best part is it can sit out for a few hours and if people are late getting to your party it's still amazing later.
who else came to the comments to see if anyone commented on the way he talks?? he sounds like a more enthusiastic version of Chills

Oh. My God. 🤯
Wait, watch a few more of his videos. Then go make some food. Before you know it you will start reciting your steps in the manner of Chef John. True story!
My wife, who is herself autistic, thinks that might be a sign of Asperger's syndrome. Then when I told her everyone of his videos had a celebrity name pun and all of his savory dishes has, "a pinch of cayenne pepper" she said, "He likes patterns. He really could be!"
I made this recipe last night with my boyfriend as a date night idea. I cook and bake often, but my boyfriend doesn't at all. We each made our own batch from start to finish, and they both turned out amazing! We made the phyllo dough from scratch as per part 1 of this video, and we made the baklava exactly like this recipe. It turned out SOOO delicious. It will take a LONG time to make if you mess around like we were, but it was so worth it. Not eating it after it came out of the oven was the hardest part. We waited 40 minutes and had some while it was a little warm, but it honestly does taste better when it's just room temperature. Highly reccomend this recipe!
Baklava always reminds me of Mom. For a Norwegian raised on a Wisconsin dairy farm, she was definitely the “exotic” one in the family. My cousins always like coming to our house to see what Aunt Diann was going to cook. I didn’t really get that until I was older. I miss her.
IT ALL SOUNDS LIKE A QUESTION?!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hahahaha
Ashley Abal he probably does it because he knows hundreds of people will feel the need to comment the obvious even if it's already been said countless times and the engagement increases the performance of the video which = more add revenue. People are painfully predictable, as is evident in the comments of this video.

"We do not under any circumstances want a soggy bottom" 😂😂😂
hahaaaaa...me too I laughed
I read your comment just as soon as I heard him say that. The timing....😂😂
Oh man, Chef John! For once I made one of your recipes and it actually turned out exactly like the photo. Taste/texture was excellent. I used store-bough phyllo dough and I subbed 5-6 drops of orange oil for the blossom water. At first when I tasted the syrup, I was worried that the orange flavor was too strong. But after the syrup-soaked baklava had cooled for a few hours, it was the EXACT right amount. Just as you described: not enough to know that it's there, but you'd know if it was missing. I was feeling a bit rebellious, so I tried brushing the butter instead if drizzling. I guess I got lucky; my dough held up fine, so I was able to get maximum butter coverage. I might add just a half pinch more cinnamon next time, and possibly boost the two middle layers up to 4 sheets instead of 2, but honestly, it was still excellent just as is. Thanks for helping me and the wifey have a lovely dessert after dinner.
I grew up on this stuff. Mom always made homemade phyllo dough. It really is delicious and it truly was a labor of love to make. Thanx mom 💕
As a person of middle eastern descent, I've made this since I was knee
high to a grasshopper. A couple of tips: don't add the syrup to hot
baklava - it will make the bottom soggy and chewy (unless that's what
you want); Second tip: Use a glass baking dish so you don't have to
guess the color of the bottom layers.
May the universe bless you, Chef John.

I love how much personality this chef has
Chef John:
I made baklava the other day; I confess I saw several videos from which I took little somethings from but your video was the one that really taught me how to make baklava. Your instructions are extremly clear and the voice tilt makes one pay attention to every detail. I've done succesfully several recipes thanks to your videos but this was sublime, thank you so much! The baklava was a total hit even among persons that hadn't tasted one before, somebody even told me it was a slice of heaven😊
I can't begin to convey how good it was, thank you!
"feel free to keep that to yourself. Cause I like how this one comes out" lmao! I love you, Chef John!
All these talk about chef john's voice! The voice is why I keep watching his video's! Love it.
Just like we can't please everyone, we can't piss everyone off either.

Same for me, the voice and the dad jokes
jimdevalk ahhaah me too! He got my attention by his voice then his sarcastic humor! 😂
I'm mostly Irish and Swedish in my heritage but my mom worked for a restaurant that made Baklava regularly. She became very familiar with the recipe so I grew up with this treat around the holidays. Since it's a Greek and Turkish dish I consider myself lucky that did have it my youth. Because it really is an amazing bite of food that should be on everyone's bucket list.
Thank an' a hat tip...wonderful presentation! Baklava is one of my all time favourite desserts since I was a young boy. My sister made it. Filo dough is much more available in stores than it was 50 years ago so making this at home is so much easier now. Rolling dough out on a marble slab with a marble rolling pin is more than I want to do!
My grandmother used to say, "This is too pretty to eat." LOL ....
My sister-in-law makes this with rose water instead of the orange/citrus water. Still very delicious!
“Feel free to keep that to yourself” LMAOOOO
꧁Long Legs꧂ Chef John is a funny guy!
Chef! First, thanks for the great recipe video. I've always thought of baklava as one of those too-delicious-to-be-made-by-me recipes.
Second, I didn't wait the five minutes after pulling it out of the oven, and the reaction of the syrup being poured over the super-hot pastry was phenomenal! I guarantee you'll get far more accolades from friends and family with that show than by waiting the five minutes. The baklava was still amazingly delicious.
Again, thanks!
When he added the cinnamon, I thought for sure it was going to be cayenne.
ArcticVapor907 Hahah! So did I!!
Hmm. Actually, that might be tasty.
ArcticVapor907 I thought the same thing...lol
same!!!
I love baklava, got it at a little Turkish cafe in Barcelona first. Best bit of your video was staring at it and picking out your piece😂😂
The Turkish version doesn't use honey, just simple syrup. The Greeks use honey. Wars have been fought over this. Chef John has taken the hybrid approach, which the Greeks and the Turks will hate.
As a Turkish I want to write something about origin of the word of baklava. Baklava comes from two indipendent Turkish words which are 'bal' and 'oklava'. So push the two words together, balli oklava turn into baklava. In Turkish 'bal' means honey, 'oklava' means rolling pin.
So baklava is etymologically a Turkish word and also a Turkish food.
What a world! I find Chef John's voice to be endearing and not intimidating. It's like your favorite uncle teaching you. My first recipe and win from Chef John was a Dutch Baby. ;)
I was just literally thinking bout this.

I still need to make that Dutch Baby recipe .... looks so good.
@@ThisisRabi what's a Dutch baby.
"I get asked, what do you need for a beautiful dutch baby? Not necessarily a handsome Dutch gentleman." Lmao
This looks awesome. My aunt used to make it like this and the only differences were that she spread the butter over the filo layers with her fingers, and when making the syrup after the cloves she'd add a little lemon zest. I'm going to try this one. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
I am looking forward to making this. Baklava is my favorite. I have always been a bit intimidated by it, but no more! Thank you for sharing how to make this!
