    I loved this video! I had a male Betta for about five years. He was by himself but I’m an older woman and his gigantic centerpiece bowl sat on a table next to me. He was such quiet and entertaining company. I loved him like he was a cat or a dog! As soon as morning came he’d swim in circles cause he knew it meant food! He would follow my finger around the bowl and I’d make large circles on the glass and he’d stay right with my finger. I would say “you want a cookie?” And he’d dart to his feeding spot and just float and watch every move I made while getting the tiny jar out and opened it to me telling him, just a minute, don’t go anywhere. I have even videoed him doing these behaviors cause people who hadn’t seen him do this thought I was NUTSO! He would always seem so excited when it was food or snack time. Betta fish are extremely smart, not just good looking but if I’d nearly forget a snack or food time? He’d be waiting for me in the same spot where he heats. I only fed him in the same spot daily around the same times or as close the the same times each day. He just knew! I read that they can seem to have a built in clock when it comes to food. I have time in my older years (74) to fiddle around with a fish. That fish was just so smart. He died at the end of his 4th yr with me. I made the mistake of buying the biggest fancy Betta at the pet store! I later realized he was an older fish. Bigger is t always better. The associate at the per store helping me after missing my fish for so long after he’d died advised me to buy the smallest Betta which would surely mean it was young. I’ve only ever had one other female who seriously was “just a fish” lol meaning she was only pretty, we weren’t close. She died within three months. I was done! Two years go by, my grandkids asked if I’d ever get another fish? I said let’s do a field trip to the pet store and WE’RE JUST GONNA LOOK! UhHuh….They kept picking out all the large fancy males that were gorgeous. I said we need to pick from the smallest of all the fish. They picked this tiny half moon female and I thought what a waste of money, she’ll last a couple weeks lol so I made up my mind to not get excited or even fall in love again with a FISH! They named her Fishstick and we got out all the first fishes equipment etc. set it up and we were off, she was gonna be just Grandmas fish, a decoration at best. Damn that little Fishstick! I was in love by the 3rd day. I noticed as I’d set down or come back the fish almost teased for attention…well besides her little tricks? She loved to be petted, just like my first fish! Beware if you have contact with your fish? Clean hands, no hands with lotion or gel on them, ever. Let the fish come to you and they will rub all over your finger as soon as they realize you’re not food.🤭 well, I’m in love again and enjoying being a “Fish Mom” again. Not all Bettas will be like this but lightening has struck here twice and I’m just going to enjoy it, whatever comes. Oh, did I mention the fish toys? There’s a glass beach ball the size of a nickel that she pushes around, a scuba diver she had weighted to the bottom she messes with and another fish, not like her but it floats under water strung to a glass tiny float ball…lol yes, I’ve gone Looney! I just wanted to share my fish story…one fish that is so beautiful now and brings such company and joy!

      P.S. I’m thinking of getting a small tank. I have such success right now with this giant glass clear bowl but I clean it and everything in it every two weeks and it’s getting harder even though I’ve found shortcuts to make it easier. Fishstick is no trouble on cleaning day, not like in the beginning…it was MAYHEM! Now? She doesn’t even run from the net I use to transfer her to her “waiting bowl” and she watches everything I do until she’s back in her bowl and waiting for her snack!

    How do bettas make it in the wild? They have to live near each other in order to mate. So in theory if one can replicate that same atmosphere in a domestic setting then there should be no problems.

    These risky things can definitely work, but it's down to the bettas individual personalities. Give big tanks, good female to male ratio, planted/hiding places etc does decrease the risk. But at the end of the day it's important to remember that these things work well right up to the point where they don't, and when they don't, it's often a catastrophic failure. Is your bettas lives worth that risk? Personally I find a betta to be just as happy if not more happy in a tank with other peaceful fish, none of which belong to the anabantoid family.

    My father kept multiple male bettas together. His philosophy was 10 gallons of space per male in large tank.
    Her info is not at completely wrong. She does state the tank needs to have plenty of plants and hiding places. My 20 gallon had 2 late blooming males with 4 females in it. Mind you I was under the impression that the immature males were females due to the supplier assuming that's what they were. I'm not for uncontrolled breeding with man created creatures, yes the domestic betta splendin are not the same as their wild relatives, just like dogs are not the same as the wolf. I removed the males as their behavior got more mature male like.
    She is telling everyone how she got her results though personally I wouldn't attempt to keep males and females together. Same goes for any fairly easy to breed fish. Most people are unable to handle the potential numbers of the surviving fry.
    I do recommend anyone wanting bettas to try a sorority tank of females, introduce 4 or more at one time and when you introduce new females, introduce 2-3 new ones. it reduces the likely hood of severe fighting.

      I have 2 male bettas, 2 blue gouramies, 2 angle fish, 1 pleco, 3 tiger barbs in a 55 gallon tank. Keep bettas in a tank you still need to adhere to the minimum of 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. A male betta is around 2 inches including tail. So the min you should keep is 2 male bettas in a very well planted aquarium. I wouldn't keep any females as there is unnecessary stress from the attempts the males make to breed the females. If you are not planning to breed them it's best to keep only 4-5 females OR 2 males in the 10 gallon tank.

He was able to have many males in the tank because they were all bred in that tank. If you put a new one in, it would be killed. I would suggest breeding some bettas then after taking the male and female out, raising the whole batch together. THat is what the guy I know did. At John G. Wow! Your Bettas are beautiful and so is your tank! I was thinking of Bettas, how about just one male and one female in a medium size tank? How do you change the water? where do you keep them?

  • @StarlightBettas
    @StarlightBettas 5 лет назад +28

    also, i just wanted to point out that what you're saying about wild bettas is pretty much the opposite to the truth, you can successfully house wild types together, its domestic betta splendens that are far more aggressive and harder to keep together. You're males are constantly flaring at each other, they are obviously really stressed out. just because they aren't immediately killing each other doesn't mean they are happy being forced to be in the same tank as another male... :( the " fighting plakats " you speak of are what you have in your tank.

      I mean, it's called the 'Siamese Fighting Fish' for a reason.

    • @StarlightBettas
      @StarlightBettas 5 лет назад +4

      @love 2324 Ok so if they aren't tossed in a tank together you're saying they can't go in a large tank on their own? Because they most certainly can and are often happier that way than put with other males who will stress them out and cause illness from a lowered immune system. xD I in no way stated they had to be in a shitty little cup if not all put together in one tank. a lot of female bettas are actually happier alone as they are aggressive and get stressed out being with others of their kind. in many cases multiple females live happily without problems together, but forcing them to live in a stressful situation is a form of animal cruelty. purposely putting males and females together in an environment that they can't escape if they want to or feel the need to is cruel. There are so many reasons why putting both males and females together can go wrong and cause the death of your fish, especially if there are multiple males. One of which is becoming egg bound from the male's hormones being constantly present in the water. I'm not gonna bother saying more because i'm pretty certain no one responding so negatively to my comment has an open mind to listen to different perspectives and reason. Putting males with your females is never beneficial when it comes to bettas.

    • @StarlightBettas
      @StarlightBettas 5 лет назад +4

      @love 2324 never beneficial to the bettas obviously, to house both male and female together is just a selfish thing to do simply because someone wants to while disregarding how it might effect the fish. and clearly i was right about you not being able to be open minded and see from other perspectives. I very clearly stated that some females can be housed happily together but not all, so idk where you're getting that garbage about each fish being different, obviously i know that, but there is no exception when it comes to males, there will always be stress, even if its not visible to those who don't know what stress looks like. if you keep fish long enough you can identify signs of stress with ease. I'm not even going to read the rest of your response its not worth my time.

    • @StarlightBettas
      @StarlightBettas 5 лет назад

      @love 2324 Unintentionally added and removed when properly sexed. He was labeled as female, i removed him as soon as i could. It caused problems, they didn't FIGHT but they got stressed which in turn caused illness between my fish.

      @StarlightBettas 5 лет назад

      @love 2324 Also my tank is 55 gallons not 10 and i have tons of other fish as a distraction. Cant help but notice how incredibly stressed all your fish are, have fun when they murder each other or die of illnesses caused by stress. -_-

    I have four non-related females in the same 7gal tank (that’s my biggest tank). The result is amazing. Initially they fought but I just let them be. I got too anxious once and decided to isolate the bully for a day n reintroduced her into the sorority. The dynamics improved a little. They still chase each other from time to time but overall they’re very active and happy.

    I have a 20 gallon long betta habitat tank with 1 male and 6 females. I had 7 females but one had a bad attitude (she was old and big). I think she had been in that tiny cup too long. I tried to isolate her for a few days but when she reentered the tank she just constantly chased the others around. Now she’s in a bowl under a lamp and she’s a lot happier. Some betta don’t enjoy a lot of swimming space, but others do. My fish are happy and healthy. They get nipped fins from time to time but nothing more than that. I made my tank after watching this video. It’s been the Greatest thing

    For all the people saying this is terrible advice need to realize you can't put a bunch of Bettas together at once. It will never work. You need to add the fish slowly like adding one fish every week or two. Also, you need lots of plants and especially plants that float. I buy those fake grass like plants they sell at petsmart that you put under the gravel with the tops sticking out and I take out the center plants which are detachable. This leaves an upside down floating platform that any betta can swim into and chill. You can definitely keep these fish together without any aggressive behavior and with other fish as well. I think it's pretty obvious that if you dump ten bettas together into a 20 gallon tank you might have issues. If that's what people got and assumed they could do from this video then yeah it's bad advice, otherwise, i think it's pretty clear that if you have a fish known to have an aggressive nature then you'll need to add a community one fish at a time. Any responsible fish owner would do so. To add a bunch of these fish together at once in a small tank is pretty rash and just plain stupid, however, I don't think this video is telling people to do this.

      no she is not right, why do people not understand this, bettas are territorial. you ad them slowly, and you will already have a male betta that shows dominant features. adding another one in later, will spring that territorial behavior, and they will fight.

    • @cryoraptora303tm2
      @cryoraptora303tm2 5 лет назад +1

      This is even worse. If a betta already has an established territory and another betta is introduced, the first betta will surely become aggressive towards it. If you intend to keep any number of bettas together, you must introduce them at the same time so they can all make their own territories.

      They don't live together in the wild. These are man made creations - multiple types of wilds put together to create these fish. Some wild counterparts are fine in groups, others aren't. These ones are created to be aggressive to show off their fins.
      And breeding is not easy, done it myself for a number of years... and egg tube? The ovi? That has nothing to do whether or not the female is ready to breed..........

    While this MAY be a time bomb waiting to happen, one thing that absolutely needs to be mentioned (and a major reason as to why this is possible), is that "peaceful" living conditions between bettas, whether it be male/male, female/female, male/female, gender fluid betta/other betta, whatever.... is 200% ALWAYS dependant upon each and every individual bettas personality and temperament. Should anyone try this, you MUST be prepared to house one, some, or even possibly all of them separately if things do not work out. Although, that being said, thank you for saying that a tank for one betta should be five to ten gallons, and that they need warm water, as they are tropical fish. Personally, I do ten gallons minimum myself, just because after a decently heavy planting, it's ok to be a day late with water changes with only one fish and lots of plants in so much water. Bettas deserve betta than a bowl!! - The Eeyore Project: Betta Awareness being done in memory of Eeyore, my best friend who changed my life forever, may he rest in peace. I love you little guy!!

      You can find less aggressive ones by running or lightly tapping a finger across their bowl. If they just dance around or MAYBE flare up a little, they're a good candidate for a community tank.
      I've not kept multiple bettas together, but I have kept bettas in a community tank before.

    When I bred my betta in an outdoor tub, I left the fry with him and he raised them just fin till adulthood and no one fought, save for some occasional irritated nipping. There were at least 200 in there. Though I noticed non of the male fry achieved their full colouration. They were all plakats. The males could be identified, but they never displayed or fought each other. When I took a few of them out and put them in individual tanks to see what would happen, they immediately coloured up within a day or 2 and displayed at their neighbors. When I put them back a few weeks later, they went back to their submissive dull selves

    I totally agree! I have 3 aquariums with mixed Bettas. 2-5 gallons and 1-10 gallon. My first one has 8 Bettas. 2 Nemo males and a crowntail male plus 5 females (a yellow, red, silvery blue, blue and rust colored one). My 2nd tank has 5 Bettas. 2 males (a blue and a red) plus 3 females (a blue, a white and a dark blue with gold fins). My 3rd tank has 7 Bettas. 1 male Nemo and 7 females (a Nemo, yellow, 2 red, tiny bright blue & white, light blue dumbo betta). They all get along and eat together as well. They all have short fins like the Nemo’s except the crowntail. I’ve never had any luck mixing HM or veiled tails successfully. I’m basing the gender on them as they were sold to me off eBay. To do this I’d put one in a small clear fry basket for 2-4 days. If they stopped flaring at the tank Bettas I’d release them. They may chase each other which is normal but if any slight fin damage occurred they all healed now. If they continued to show aggression I’d remove them but only had to do this with one betta. It seems that the different types and colors plus the temperament of the betta itself seems to be why it’s worked out. My 2 Nemo males are together because one jumped into the fry basket during the night and they didn’t fight. So they mixed themselves! But! You must have time to watch them all day the first day. Feeding them a little in the first hour seemed to have distracted them from any aggression and ease the transition. I did add 2 red females at one time to the tank that has 2 reds in it. I had to move one to another tank due to torn fins but she’s doing well in the 2 Nemo and Crowntail tank. Defying all that’s ever been said about mixing Bettas! Plus they are beautiful! They are filtered and heated and I do 50 water changes weekly and feed daily. By no means am I saying try this. I would never want to risk a betta dying nor do I recommend you try this. I was a beginner when this all started 3 months ago as well. I do have Koi tanks, ponds, Cichlids and Oscars (many aquariums) so I guess you could say I am experience keeping fish. Just was new to Bettas. I wish I could add videos! My sellers have seen them any are amazed! Guess they must love me! Lol

    I agree that bettas need to be in a very densely planted tank to replicate their natural habitat. Likewise paradise fish. We kept dozens of them in a 25 gallon tank with a dense clump of reeds planted in a muddy base. The fish made little living holes among the mass of fine plant roots and mud, bred prolifically and looked fantastic - and all got along just fine.

    I have 2 females and 1 male.
    The females are a crowntail and a koi betta. The male is a Platinum Dragon.

    Great video!
    This is the first time I see:
    1. bettas in lots of water
    2. many bettas together without fighting.

    Actually male bettas didn't feel lonely of being alone, because that is the way they wanted to be, alone in their territory.

      Females, too. In the wild they only live in loose harems, and those have not been specifically bred to kill each other for hundreds of years.

      @monokhem They have been bred to fight far longer than they have been bred as decorative pets. Their instinct to fight has not gone away. Fighting bettas are sometimes crossed with wild bettas for increased speed, but not always. Plakats that have not are more aggressive than their wild ancestors. In the wild bettas rarely fight to the death because they have plenty of territory.

      @monokhem domesticated bettas are bred to fight each other and just putting a different coat of paint on them doesn't change what they've been breed to do.it's why they are called siamese fishing fish.

      it's true.
      They are fighting fish that have been selectively bred for their aggression.
      Even the pretty ones still have aggerrssive side cuase their aggression hasn't been bred out.

    Keep in mind that these are very specific conditions, please do not buy a bunch of bettas and try to keep them together in your unplanted 20 gallon. Don’t do it.

    This is absolutely an eye opener for me. thanks so much for the video. All this while i thought keeping bettas together is a definite no-no. Your video just shows it's not true. I do have a 45 gal tank but have been afraid to mix my betta in. Im definitely gonna give this a try

    How many female bettas could I have in a 50 gallon? It’s well planted and has lots of hiding spots.

    I currently have a 75g heavily planted with cories, and mollies. Two females and one male beta. My male betta is very very docile and has shown no signs of aggression towards any other fish. Im going to get a couple more females and try to add another male beta :) I’m very excited
