      I was literally at a Petco today as well, in Waldorf, MD. Yes, i’m calling them out! Dead Bettas in cups and also in extremely dirty water. Some had open wounds and to the point where they were all white, zero color, i felt so bad. I can’t believe this happens as often as it does, it’s absolutely mortifying. If only i had the space! You want to save them so bad but then they’ll just order another fish to take it’s place so you’d be supporting the abuse. Already have 2 Bettas, both in 5 1/2 gallon tanks, heater, plants, Fluval HOB filters that actually support 20 gallons of water and they’re living their best lives.

    💖Another great video from Father Fish... My daughter became a lifelong Betta Lover. My little hobby channel was actually named for her. One day we were watching tv (back in the 1980s) and a television announcer said that a program was 'Officially starting." My 3 year old daughter got all excited; she thought it was going to be about fish. She said "Can we watch the fishely?" 😄 I couldn't disappoint her, so we made her a video with a VHS recorder. I have always loved Betas; I very first tank had a red feisty beta along with my swordtails and angel fish. He was king of that tank. He was a jumper and landed on my floor a couple of times unfazed , and soon after made that bubble nest. I had baby fish from one of the other fish that he happily gobbled up , so it was quite exciting for me as a 12 yr old(:

    From one old gheezer to another this was the most get to the point informative video I’ve ever watched on Betta’s , I’ve tried to raise The babies but didn’t get the feeding part right , would raising them in a larger tank with more micro fauna help keep them going till they are old enough to eat larger food , one thing I’d like you thoughts on is the depth of the water in the tank, is 6” of water better for the male to grab eggs and put them in the bubble nest, much like the rice patties of Vietnam? 🤔

    I accidentally bred bettas! Lol. I had put a pair in a heavily planted outside pond last summer.. I took them out as the weather cooled and just left the pond to fend for itself over winter. As it warmed up again in late spring, I noticed baby fish. I thought they were guppies at first, since they were the same size…then realised they were tiny bettas. We had nights that got down to 4°c so I am baffled how they survived for so many months at such low temperatures. I know they had “wild food” to eat but they must have been dormant for some of that time to still be so small when I found them. I am giving them dried shrimp and black worms now and they are growing well. There are about 20. It’s starting to get cold here again in Australia so I’m not sure if I should leave them in the pond for the coming winter. So far they are not fighting.

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  Год назад +23

      Pretty impressive. Leave some of them through this coming winter. They will not fight until they become fully mature. If the pond is large enough males can easily survive in community. Please keep me posted about these. I am not aware of low temp survival of bettas.

    So funny you mentioned they get depressed. I have a female and male betta in a 40 gallon tank. I didn’t know about introducing them and just put them in together. I got lucky because they get along so well. I’ve had them for a month now together but they haven’t bred. My girl betta named Bellatrix has her little egg spot and looks like she’s carrying eggs. I don’t know why my male betta stopped making bubble nests. I have another male betta (Nemo koi betta) named Cepheus in a ten gallon tank and I swear he’s a dog stuck in a fish’s body. He loves being pet. I’m not kidding. I rub his belly, fins, and his chin 🤣🤣🤣 . He constantly comes to the surface for me to pet him. Strangest thing ever! I’m worried he’s getting lonely though and I wonder if I can add him in the 40 gallon with Bellatrix and Orion? I don’t want the two males to kill each other. I’m so attached to my bettas. I love them as much as my dogs

    I removed some guppies from my betta fish' tank only the other day to begin the process of converting his water to the mineral water as suggested by fantastic 😍 Fr Fish 🐟 and only a few days later he had for the first time started blowing bubbles! So i was thinking he was lonely and missing his friends already! I think they love to have company (of another fish species so they dont fight with their own kind when not mating with them). He was in a temporary little tank while I prepared his tank for a few hours with some groovy cherry shrimps who seemed very happy and also a couple of young small guppies and a small panda(black & white) catfish who are also awesome little dudes. My guppies, catfish and shrimps live in a very large interesting tank usually where they are very active and sociable and are back there now. 🥰 My beautiful betta 💞 is really enjoying his new mineral water (bought in spring water 1.5 litre bottles from the supermarket) and is perched in prime place now on my windowsill in my lounge. This is his first night in his spring cleaned pad! He hasn't blown more bubbles in there yet on his first day and seems very active straight away. I was wondering if you were supposed to get a betta fish with the same shape, style and colour when you put them together when they are ready to mate? I have another betta (supposedly female I was told in the shop and which is a different type of betta and not so fluffy finned as the male). She is in a large tank which was the same kind I bought her from ... she was with other female bettas in the shop so she is used to being social! She currently lives with guppies, neons, cory catfish, shrimps, mountain/cloud Minnows! They get on fine but i hope to give her a slightly less busy tank so she has more peace as she ages! I will try look out for the white egg spot now incase she can buddy up for her romantic momentary marriage with my male betta if he starts bubble blowing again too! 🤣 Such a cute breeding lifestyle they have! really hope i can breed some betta fry successfully at least once one day :) Now that i understand their natural habitat of more shallow streams etc feel much more wised up and less confused or stressed about their happiness. 🎉

    I've tried to breed bettas before(4-6) times. But haven't done it quite like this. My manly man is looking a bit depressed. Maybe I'll try your way this time. I have all the things you suggest. My smaller tanks all have microfauna. I'll let you know in a few months how it works out. I need to get a female and grow her out a bit. My last female died. I tried to save her from petsmart. I think she was just too young and she was overwhelmed by her new environment. I prefer female bettas. BTW bettas are the ONY fish I ever purchase from petsmart. My lfs is about the only place I've ever bought my fish. The owners are rude and possibly burned out after 30 years but I stand by their fish. I lost my first fish in 50 years to disease last week. Long story but my 75 gal looks so empty now I'm not sure where to go with it now.

    Never EVER keep a Betta in a cup for a prolonged period of time! They do suffer even if they don't seem like it. Also, if you keep male betta in glass tanks next to each other make sure that they can not see each other. Otherwise they will be in constant stress because they will try to fight them.
    Bettas live in vast flooded herbacious plains (think acres and acres of rice fields) so, yes, they do need som space. 50 liters plus lots of plants minimum!

    • @FatherFish
      @FatherFish  10 месяцев назад +2

      These bettas have lived in tiny containers for more than 500 years.

    • @seb0rn739
      @seb0rn739 10 месяцев назад

      @@FatherFish And they suffered for each minute of it. They were domesticated in Thailand for a fish version of cockfighting. They didn't exactly care for their wellbeing and they still don't. Their natural habitat is vast. In fact, in nature they claim territories of a bit less than 1 square meter. A 20 liter tank is barely enough for them. 50 liter would be better.
      Their toughness is what leads to their maltreatment. They can endure bad conditions for months, even years, without showing great signs of distress. But that doesn't mean they are well. Billions of bettas suffer worldwide without their owners even knowing it.

      @FatherFish  10 месяцев назад +1

      I have been breeding bettas for decades and have personal knowledge of dozens of professional betta breeders who have line bred their bettas not for their fighting ability but for their finnage, color, and vigorous health. I know in fact that your sentimental depiction of the "poor betta" is nonsense.

    • @seb0rn739
      @seb0rn739 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@FatherFish What I am saying is not news. Also, breeders are not experts in fish behaviour! If you ask an ichthyologist or a fish veterinarian, they will confirm to you that keeping a betta (or any fish) in small containers for more than a few hours is animal abuse. That's a fact! RUclips doesn't let me post links here so for my source just google "Bettas Need More Than Bowls - College of Veterinary Medicine" and "How Much Space Do Betta Fish Need? Vet-Approved Tank Size Guide!". There are plenty of other sources as well of course.
      As I said, in nature they live in vast wetlands and claim territories for themselves that are up to 1 spare meter large. How can they imitate this essential behaviour in a jar? They can't! They need 20 liters (~5 gallons) MINIMUM. 50 liters (~15 gallons) would be even better. That's also fact.
      Look, I get that you have a lot of experience. But experience can be wrong too. People can do things wrong for all of their lives. If you did it wrong until now, at least learn from your mistakes and start doing it right! Also, the responsible thing would be to take down your betta videos because they are definitely factually wrong! Otherwise I really like your content because you seem to really understand the complexities of ecology and nature. As a trained biologist, I can appreciate that. But concerning bettas, you are simply wrong!

I want what's best for my Betta, and the man himself, Chris Kringle of fish, has convinced me, breeding maybe the right path forward. My problem is I do not want a great many bettas, just the one tank, maybe another if my gardening binge continues. What should I do with the fry? Or the adolescents if fry are to sensitive to be rid of? Should I pursue this, or pamper my betta as I can and simply not breed him?
