I'm kind of an expert betta breeder after 10 years...when breeding bettas always take into account the conditioning of the pair for at least two weeks, in this time you want the fish to see each other to induce them into breeding. Once the male has his bubble nest prepare the water at 6.5- 7 pH and 100-110 ppm to not fail. An almond leaf on the surface is awesome for conditioning the water and supporting the nest. The container we use to separate them needs to share water so fish can smell themselves on the second day of introducing the pair you can release the female at sunset and with the temperature at 28 Celsius they will spawn in the morning. PD: if the female releases the eggs by herself, she is overstimulated and could not spawn... Excellent video as always
yup did all this time and time again worked with a variety of water parameters all manner of leaves and conditioning regimes, and after at least 70 attempts i had nothing to show for it but a dozen dead fish either from being eggbound because the males are useless and can't get the eggs out of the female or because the whole thing goes on for so long the male just drops dead from exhaustion. ( even ended up with a male and a female co - exsisting in breeding tank for three weeks which they were fine with untill i separated them then she died two days later he went the day after that. Have given up on breeding Bettas as the genetics of Australian Bettas is obviously completely watered down. Focusing on my 16 pairs of Angels which are far less work and stress than Bettas.
Your Absolutely right about that you gotta have a bubbleness first you don't introduce the demand in with the female because either or he's gonna kill her. This kid doesn't know what he's talking about .
A real fish breeding video with all the mistakes and failures, showing things often do not go right the first time but persistance does pay off. A very well presented video.
Pro-tip from a european betta breeder (I won several prizes at European betta shows in England, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany). Use a coca cola bottle cut in half with the bottom cut out as well, like a cilinder. It will not disturb the water as much when you release the female. I also feed beef Heart to the females to condition them. All the other stuff is mostly luck 🙂
I breed bettas here in Australia and interestingly, some of my bettas don't spawn the same. A couple of my males like to build the bubble nest only when the female is released and some build the bubblenest as they're spawning.
Your are the only reason I decided to buy fish and live plants. I started watching a year ago and bought 2 betta males 2 months ago. They are thriving and I am addicted to the hobby now. Thanks bro
Hello, I am writing to you from a Spanish aquarium and terrarium hobby channel. And a little advice if you want to carry it out is when you put the female in the container, separated from the male, the container that has some type of hole so that hormones can live through them and thus the Male and female, so to speak, will know each other better, not just visually (It works very well for me, then it is less "aggressive" when it comes to reproduction ( Great channel and good information.
Fantastic! Please show us these fish again when they have colour, I'd love to see how they look and if there is much variation in colours and patterns. Great video, thanks.
Been breeding Bettas on and off for years. Had a male in my community tank and he I don't think I ever remember him flaring, he wouldn't chase his tank mates and would vibe and hang out with all my other fish. I had an eggbound female that I tried everything to save, I eventually put her in my community tank with my gentle male and he took care of the eggbound problem super fast. No showing off, just greeted eachother and did that cute lil hug. His nest was in around a chunk of driftwood that peeked out of the tank and the pair did awesome, I ended up leaving the female, something I'd never recommend to anyone, and the pair would always hang out with the corydoras together or they'd hang out with my adf's and swim all weird to act like them. They ended up breeding for me multiple times in the tank and they always protected their lil babies from my other fish who were indeed interested. They loved the driftwood but a couple times they accepted a big flowerpot at the surface of my tank so they were separated. Lately I haven't had good luck with females, my pretty galaxy girl went on a 7-8 month hunger strike, bounced back and was nice and round, then she just died randomly a few months later, I think she may have been eggbound but I'm not sure. She had no tank mates or anything either, broke my heart when she died. Now I have two males that since losing her I've been thinking of rehoming them
Sometimes I have 5 pairs breeding at once and sometimes there is no action for weeks on end. Sometimes doing betta swinging i.e. swapping partners will save your breeding attempts even if they're not the ideal coupling. Fishes have their own standard of finding partners. Ive had siblings breeding in a hospital tank accidentally. I've had a tiny 4cmale breeding with a 6cm female, and vice versa. You're absolutely right with the quote 'youll never know'.
Your betta videos inspired me. A few months ago I had three successful spawns! They are growing nicely and starting to get their colors. Thank you for the content!
Something I ran across a long time ago for the setup was to use a glass lamp chimney in the tank/bucket to separate the female from the male. It's basically a clear tube so they can see each other but it easily lifts out without disturbing anything.
All I use is a 2L plastic soft drink bottle (other sizes can also work) cut into a cylinder... works a treat as it definitely doesn't disturb the tank when you remove it. I also partly cover the container to reduce external movement shadows during the breeding process.
Thank you for showing us an example that wasn’t automatically perfect and the solution. Most breeding videos over simplify it and then you’re discouraged when to didn’t work
You inspired me to keep breeding fish now I’m raising some red copper koi cross black vampire samurai fry atm you’ve taught me a lot keep up the videos !
I had a Beta fish many decades ago. I bought him a female on two occasions, and both times he was so rough on the females that He killed first the first one, and then weeks later the second one. So in the end he lived out the rest of his days solo. Eventually he died and I sold the tank because I was so disheartened. I did everything by the book, but as your video shows us, when it goes wrong, it goes wrong and there is nothing you can do about it. Thanks for your video. Fascinating.
Sometimes they do this is they haven’t become acquainted properly. My Dad’s betta did the same to his female. It the case that he is being too rough, it is best to separate them again, give them more time apart but in view of each other. Eventually it should work, but there will always be a small number that just do it paid well. In that case, I tried a different female and started a process again.
Appreciate the honesty in this video especially where it shows not all pairs of bettas will work out and that its good to keep trying different pairs together to get that match.
i'm on my 3rd attempt at breeding bettas and i am so far successful, ive got one halfmoon brood that has about 40 babies, glad they had a small batch honestly, then i bred 2 super red veil-tails and they had around 150 babies, so far the first set has reached about 3 months growth in about 1.5 months, i feed a combination of Decapsulated Brine Shrimp eggs, and BBS, but now they are kinda in the teenage phase, im hoping i can get some Bug buffet in the future for them :)
If you haven't gotten to use bug buffet yet, you'll love it! Every single one of my fish, shrimp, and snails love it! Also got the green cuisine and it's also a major hit! Don't know where you're located, but I'm in Iowa in the US. Definitely worth the long ship time! I just ordered another big bag and patiently waiting for it to arrive ❤
This is perfect timing. I was recently watching your old videos on how to breed bettas and was amazed with how the results turned out. I'm thinking of getting a pair of betta from my lfs to breed!
Sir you have the cutest most precious dog in the world! They're so smart and curious about the fish too which is adoresbles! I used to have a jack russell so I'm biased cleary.
If you take a clear plastic juice bottle and cut the top and bottom off of it, use it to put the female in it works really well. You just left it up to release the female
You've just reminded me that I've watched every Single. Betta. Breeding. Video. You've made, and i still haven't done this project! Thanks for reminding me 😂🎉 My opal male looked just like the one in the dud bucket. You look healthy and happy, just thought I'd say hi 👋 ❤
I needed this video! Currently 2weeks+ into trying to get my blue marble plakat male to spawn with one of my 2 females. They just are not cooperating! Ironically it was a petsmart veil tail male that was my best breeder. Thanks for showing the frustrating pairs, it really helps me keep on going! Also, could you add your water change routine with fry still in the bucket?
I'm sorry the first pair didn't work out. Those blue Bettas were beautiful. My favorite color blue. I tried years ago to breed Bettas and I never had success. It almost makes me want to try again.
Cheers for adding in the number of days it took, I tried following your method once before but was unsure how long you left them to do their thing. I wonder if the addition of some Barry white tunes would increase the success rate?😂
In my experience raising bettas, the trick is to put the female in a container with holes so that her pheromones reach the male and thus he is activated for reproduction. This trick has always given me babies on the first try.
I breed rare bettas in Vic Australia, and in my experience some males just need a couple of goes as they're inexperienced. Also, I collected some water from a lake, put it in a tank to age and now I have little critters that my fry eat and I don't have to feed them. I don't know what they are but they're little white things and I just feed them powered green algae from time to time so they keep breed.
Great video Nick! I loved the way you went from beginning to the end with all the mistakes and failures included. Because it just shows that breeding fish is not always as easy as it seems each time and sometimes things happen with no particular reason!
Thanks for the vid! How long do do you not feed the males for, looked like an 18 day cut there? And do you not have issues with ammonia spikes in the buckets when since there is no filtration or anything?
Awe, that's too bad that beautiful betta couple weren't a match. I've never had a female betta that made her own bubble nest and put eggs in it. That was fascinating to see. Your furry little helper is adorable!

Based on my experiences., I do not feed once we introduce both the male and female. But it is still 50/50 chance of breeding. Never pair a submissive male to an aggressive female. Pair an aggressive male to a submissive female. Nips and torn fins are very normal, it shows that it's working.
Have I bred bettas multiple times? Yes.
Did I still watch this whole video? Also yes.
Do i ever intend to breed bettas no. Did i still watch the entire video yes
Do I intend on breeding betas: kinda
Did I watch this whole video: yep
Same!

I seriously wish there were selective breeding done to create a breed of peaceful bettas, I'd really love a peaceful community of them.
I use the home depot Homer buckets because the eggs are so much easier to see on the bottom of the orange bucket. Dad seems to appreciate it too!
