I think people underestimate the time and money required to successfully breed, raise and sell just one spawn of Bettas. It's a lot of time and work, so well done to you.
Every single thing adds up. Plus shelf space. Plus your time. You are doing great. I've never seen any busiess tell their personal expences . Brave man. Wishing you well
Thanks for this. That was really informative. You touted yourself in an earlier video as not being a pro betta breeder, but realistically, how many people actually do this? Sure, you were really young back then and you still are, but don't sell yourself short. Just because you're only 20, you've taken the initiative to learn how to breed many types of fish. Koodos for your passion in showing the world how to successfully do this, and keep it up, cause you are a pro! I will keep following your hard work, Justin.
I think it's great man! If you can make cash while you're enjoying this awesome hobby, it's a win-win :) Also, super cool that you're being open and sharing how you do things. Being transparent isn't always necessary but it's rad that you this.
This was awesome! You are a very smart and resourceful young man. I love to see that you get to live your best life everyday, and make a living. Your parents/loved ones must be so proud of you 😊
In the 1970s when I was in the States there were none of these koi bettas or blue berries. There were red, blue and pink in solid colors or with nuances in blends. There appeared the cellophane betta. But I only saw it in a magazine. I liked those better than the ones today with all the blotches. I imagine that the older strains were hardier. Much success and satisfaction to you!
The points you touched in the end I thought of being the biggest expense in my mind you didn't even account for. All the shipping supplies, petrol to and from wholesalers, and even more time. I've thought about breeding Bettas myself just as a project and not for profit at all and always stop short because that's a lot of fry and jars I'd have to take care of till I did sell everything
Nah, it's like $10 in plastic cups, $15 petrol? an hours drive? You're dropping off the entire batch of betta to the wholesaler, you're not driving each individual fish to customers lol
Haha thanks another great video. Just a side note I belive your channel is so underrated you are one of the best fish channels out there. You inspired me to breed angelfish and pleco with your vids so I just thought I should thank you, you put in so much time and effort in your video to give us quality content!
Impressive detail in the true cost of doing this! I love how you got a per hour rate. Nice! I bred bettas once. The aggression between them was tough to deal with but you talk about that too!
Having and breeding Betta fish is actually fun. I have like 20 pairs of Betta and I breed them for about once a month. I've got a lot of money from them while I'm doing my hobby so I guess it's really a win win situaition
Fantastic video, thank you for sharing your knowledge and time with us. I just showed my young son your videos and at 7 yrs old he wants to breed fish now. 😃
Another great video, I'd love to know how you set up your connection to your wholesalers and stores, how did you start out and what tips would you have for people wanting to get into serious breeding.
And factor in getting the parents ready for breeding. That can add up to a lot of food after a while depending on how many pairs you are conditioning. Have you ever tried setting up a harem style breeder for betta with one male and multiple female betta?
That was a really cool breakdown! I’m actually having my first shot breeding bettas today. Not expecting many fry if I do succeed because the female got so full with eggs earlier in the week that she ended up dropping a couple hundred. But that’s alright, makes it easier for me to handle first time through. Found your initial betta breeding video to be very helpful, and I used that to build on for creating my setup. Thanks a heap mate!
@@KeepingFishSimple Could I ask your opinion on something to do with the above message? So they haven't spawned yet, male is super intent on expanding his bubble nest into a million dollar bubble-mansion, and while he will happily flare at the female, every time she gets close to the nest he starts chasing her away. It's not aggressive, because he doesn't go after her once he's chased her away from his nest, but I don't know how they'll breed if he doesn't let her come over to the nest. Have you seen this before? Should I keep trying to spawn, or restart the process and recondition the fish? TIA :)
An easier way to rear them from the cupping stage is to burn small holes in the jars and place them in a shallow tank. Quick water changes, by draining main tank then topping up. Let females swim amongst them. Pour in some daphnia which would swim in and out of the males cups. Also the benefit of stable water and almond leaves (plus any medication if needed) in the main water. When ready for sale, place in fresh cups and away they go.
I do not know why anyone would ask you how much $$$ you make... That aside, when we do what we love to do, $$$ is just a by product for allowing us to continue with our passion. Every cent that you made on the Bettas, I could bet, went right back into your business. The fact that you were able to create such beautiful Bettas from your first try is AMAZING!!! I wholehearted LOVE how you are so transparent and sincere!!! I tried ordering from you, but the state of Florida is not on your shipping list!!! I hope soon, this could be remedied. Keep your passion and unique drive always moving forward!!! Thank you for an incredible video on how you manage your business!!!
It is a tricky one, but in this case i dont see a problem asking. It is this kind of information that people need if they are considering breeding fish for profit. I am not sure why people are so confidential with how much they make. Total income maybe. but for specific things, i dont see a problem :) Anyway its good that some people are willing to share more information.
He is in Australia and we can’t export fish overseas (or even to some states in our own country) I sure know the feeling of falling in love with a kind of fish that you aren’t legally allowed to get
Im glad your doing well and enjoying it. Im sure you spend alot of time around your fish, when the Dark knight rams arrived they were not at all scared of me and settled in pretty much straight away. Usually when i get new fish they are more cautious at first. So they seem to be very used to having people around them.
Love this! When you say a couple of hundred for 4ft tanks, is that total or each? Wholesale or retail? Can’t seem to find them that cheap so I’d really appreciate the help. And what price range did you sell them to fish stores or wholesalers for? You didn’t say how many bettas you had. A guesstimate: $10 for lower grade (retail $30) to $20 for higher grade (retail $60)?
I love your honesty! I have no clue, so I ask: why do you use the small cups for the Bettas? can they live for a long period of time in the small cups? Newcomers always get the minimum "1cm fish per liter."
Cups are not ideal, and KFS tries to keep them in cups for as little time as possible. If you change water regularly, yes they can live a long time in a cup however its also not a great life for a fish. The problem is they fight and its better for them to be in cups short term than in a larger tank being stressed and fighting.
Bettas have an advantage of being able to "breathe air" from the surface with a specialised "lung-gill" combo that means a small volume of water won't mean they can't breath, but give them more space if you can, let them get around a bit :D
If your still reading comments I have a question on how you started, when you have the fish getting ready to breed did you keep them in just small 1 gal tanks or had 20 gals for each one. Then when your done when did you tell the grades and the species? Also when they were able to be cupped?
Thanks so much! I’m obsessed with with fish /ecosystems, but have a soft spot for bettas. I wanted to get into it as I have a lot of time. So this was helpful
Truth being, alot of people are not getting fish tanks, it takes alot of work and commitment, and now your competing against pet smart, pet supermarket, ect.....You love what your doing and that is what counts, it becomes a great side buisness.
I love your channel and you are just so amazing with what you do! I breed bettas as a part time job and I always for gold half moons and creating my own “bloodline”, am you can be successful with it, you just have to work hard and make that you will have all the supplies to raise these fish.
Just watched this series. So rough estimate is you doubled your investment in 4 to 5 months. Without accounting for your hourly self pay. And this was 4 betta pairs to start. Overall it's not a bad investment. And you can do this 3 times a year. depending how often your betta can breed and if you have the space for it you could cycle through a new batch monthly even. Meaning 8 sales within 1 year the first year if it takes 4 months to grow each batch. I would rate this as profitable on the long term and not exactly a waste of money. I would like to see more projects like this and bottom line videos with most profitable and least profitable fish. As an entrepreneur I'm always looking for diffrent business opportunities. With low start up investment and space requirements.
If it’s a hobby of yours it’s definitely doable to make enough to fund the hobby as a side hustle, but there’s better investments if both time and funds if the goal is profit alone. There’s a high level of risk with breeding, especially betta breeding, and it takes a great deal of skill, experience, and knowledge to do it profitably. You’ll likely fail the first couple attempts and feel like you “wasted” a lot of time and money. If you get other kinds of fulfillment from it, than go for it.
Wishing you all the success! I too run my own business that's also my hobby, nothing is more satisfying when your hobby is also your job. I've been all of your content and I don't even have a fish tank. Keep up the good work bro!
I live in southeast Tx. USA. In out Petsmart, Petco. We are paying $15-30 per fish. That is for YOUR grade C. 🙄. Your awesome, your sweet heart an knowledgeable passion makes me smile!
Want to teach him in business you can calculate everything as a depreciation on equipment and the shelf space as a rental cost per tank. You can than calculate an average on how much each fish costs. Also profit is what you make after paying yourself.
Wow great video, you don't see too many videos like this that fish breeders or even fish keeper come and tell you honestly and sincerely about their business. Thanks, your video is very insightful.

I commented this in an earlier vid, but I don’t believe you would’ve seen it. Orange Laser Corys like to lay their eggs on broad leafed plants, so adding something like an Anubis would probably help.
most of those cellophane bettas will marble later in life, marbling usually shows their full colors around 8 months in their life (from my experience). Marbling is just their colors shifting its a gene.
And also your dedication towards breeding em might cost a lot too thats what makes people like me as customer rather spend $$$ to buy from breeder like you than dedicate ourselves to do selecting breeding knowing you always give us the best qualities 🤣🤣🤣
I’m 13 and am going to start breeding betta. I got my first pair of bettas today, well I bought the male and already had the female. They are crown tails. Cheap but they’ll get me started. I plan on getting koi bettas one day. I bought a 3 tier clear plastic drawer and it works perfect to hold the bettas. With 2 gallons of water it’s about 5 inches deep. So now I can have 3 pair of betta. I’m still trying to figure out the cup system though.
Breeding fish is definitely profitable, but people who try it, need to do it the right way. I've met some disgusting breeders before, eg, selling bristlenose fry still attached to the egg, people breeding excessive fish in an undersized, under-filtered tank. People in the hobby will remember you for it. Be passionate about it, it's a fun hobby and you meet a lot of cool and/or crazy fish people.
Addicted to these videos! Great insight given that I had bettas and had no successful breeds. Difficult also to access Indian Almond leaves in South Africa. I was told that guava leaves work as well. Keep the videos coming though and thank you!
Just randomly found a girl who breeds bettas on tiktok and then ended up watching videos on RUclips about it. Found you! Watched your video of breeding them in the tubs, and now I think I definitely want to attempt this myself! So this video is much appreciated ❤️ I obviously am not a fish-breeder and I do not have the set up that you have (yet) so I wanted to clarify… you believe that bettas can be bred without that massive set up? Like truly just having the essentials you named (some 4ft aquariums, tubs, shelving, food like brine shrimp, etc) would be good enough? I’m definitely prepared to do a ton of research before I would even attempt this but I’m sooo intrigued by it! I’ve always loved bettas (truly love most aquarium fish though and used to have a large tank with guppies when I was young! Those are fascinating to watch bc they birth LIVE fish! No eggs 🤗)
If you breed beautifull betta's with large tails or special colours like pure blacks or elephant ears or a mixed breed between those 2 you can ask 16-20 a fish (if male) and sometimes you can ask more for a longer tail female based on Netherlands prices
Thanks for the video! I'd be interested in a break down of your cory breeding set ups and if you differ between species. Do you ever set up outside and take advantage of your warm climate? I'm from a moody Minnesota climate so it's challenging. You are an incredible asset to the hobby! Thanks!
are the lights you use for manfish fry turned on all day long? When the lights go out and it's time to sleep, the fry that have just been freeswiming are sleeping in a pile in the corner of the tank because they are pushed by the flow of the air pump made? because I always find the new freeswiming fry die when they sleep together. The weakest fry will stick to the wall of the tank where there is no water there and cannot fall into the water again. GBU from Indonesia.
Not a bad haul for a hobby project. You'd have to breed a lot of different fish and keep it on a cycle to constantly make a good income on it. But then you've turned it into a business to breed them.
I think there is a lot that is not accounted for : - Finding the wholesale businesses that are ready to buy your production, and well the overall marketing process - The paperwork involved for that particular portion of your business -- Fiscal (yeah - you know.. taxes) -- regulatory (I understand you guys down under are pretty tight on anything that involves live animals) -- Real estate value amortization or mortgage per M^2 or ft^2..
I think people underestimate the time and money required to successfully breed, raise and sell just one spawn of Bettas. It's a lot of time and work, so well done to you.
Thank you!
My issue is holding tanks like the space to have so many species and have some growing and adults forsale

Great explanation of breaking down the time and effort needed to get a financial return.
Lots of money invested, before any return is possible.

I obviously am not a fish-breeder and I do not have the set up that you have (yet) so I wanted to clarify… you believe that bettas can be bred without that massive set up? Like truly just having the essentials you named (some 4ft aquariums, tubs, shelving, food like brine shrimp, etc) would be good enough?
I’m definitely prepared to do a ton of research before I would even attempt this but I’m sooo intrigued by it! I’ve always loved bettas (truly love most aquarium fish though and used to have a large tank with guppies when I was young! Those are fascinating to watch bc they birth LIVE fish! No eggs 🤗)
So impressed with your work. You obviously love it. Guessing you were making profit from other projects at the same time.
If you breed beautifull betta's with large tails or special colours like pure blacks or elephant ears or a mixed breed between those 2 you can ask 16-20 a fish (if male) and sometimes you can ask more for a longer tail female based on Netherlands prices
And you may end up with 100 life fish id say.. 100 times 20 euro's or 16 and you have a fair amount of cash for little amount of effort
Once it bettas it good for me watching from Barbados 🇧🇧
Thanks for the video!
I'd be interested in a break down of your cory breeding set ups and if you differ between species. Do you ever set up outside and take advantage of your warm climate? I'm from a moody Minnesota climate so it's challenging.
You are an incredible asset to the hobby!
Thanks!
Great video I'm a fish lover too.... But I really don't know how to multiply it
Betta fish are so awesome!
I would love to see more videos like this! Great job
Thanks!
Could you do a video about how to condition before and after breeding. To get them ready to breed and special care after breeding?
GREAT EXPLAINING VIDEO :)
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
Your channel is growing so much now bro! Congrats you deserve it best content !
Thank you so much 😀
I enjoyed the Betta videos. What made me subscribe is I really want to see how some of them turn out .
are the lights you use for manfish fry turned on all day long? When the lights go out and it's time to sleep, the fry that have just been freeswiming are sleeping in a pile in the corner of the tank because they are pushed by the flow of the air pump made? because I always find the new freeswiming fry die when they sleep together. The weakest fry will stick to the wall of the tank where there is no water there and cannot fall into the water again.
GBU from Indonesia.
Real man, TIME!!!! Thanks you for this video!!!
This is great. Because, I was following the Betta breeding
I breed bettas. I breed long fin avatars and multi coloured HMPK dumbos.
You don't see the kinds I breed often in shops.
should totally do this format video with shrimp sometime, or there fish breeds you have done
I’m thinking about breeding plakat koi bettas myself.
So, would it be more profitable to sell the fish online only? Or do you recommend wholesale/stores. Does it depend on the time of year?
Please go into detail about other projects as well! I love these kind of videos.
For sure!
Interesting. Thanks for the transparency.
Thank you!
Great vid mate keep the business going strong 👍👍, peace from 🇬🇧
You are doing a marvelous job, please keep it up! ❤❤❤
Not a bad haul for a hobby project. You'd have to breed a lot of different fish and keep it on a cycle to constantly make a good income on it. But then you've turned it into a business to breed them.
Im totally impressed with the buisness you set up and the videos you have made...........Congrats
I appreciate that!
You can betta fish is in sales in online
Bro I love seeing your videos
I think there is a lot that is not accounted for :
- Finding the wholesale businesses that are ready to buy your production, and well the overall marketing process
- The paperwork involved for that particular portion of your business
-- Fiscal (yeah - you know.. taxes)
-- regulatory (I understand you guys down under are pretty tight on anything that involves live animals)
-- Real estate value amortization or mortgage per M^2 or ft^2..
