Can Male And Female Bettas Be Kept Together? Sharing What I've Learned Over The Last Few Weeks...

  • Folks, I've only been keeping Bettas for about a year and a half, so I consider myself a relatively new Betta owner, with a lot to learn still. I wasn't sure about whether male and female bettas could be kept together, so I had to do a little research and consult with a few friends of mine who are very good with bettas. I thought this video was worth a share, especially for those just getting into bettas or thinking about getting into bettas.
    I was surprised about how much conflicting information I found, though overall, it was advisable not to keep male and female bettas together, unless trying to breed them, or, unless they are in a big tank with lots of defined territories.
    Hope this video is helpful in some way!
    Below is the link to Life With Pets video where they successfully bred one of their female bettas:

    LOL Patriot love the bling! Awesome video. I am about to try breeding betta's , it is an intensely busy project. I am currently raising a baby female to mate with my purple veil tail. You have to be ready for the fry with vinegar eels, grindal worm cultures, then brine shrimp. The male also needs to be "conditioned" before putting a female in the tank. I will be using a 10 gallon filled about half way so he can get the eggs into the bubble nest. Moon River Bettas youtube channel is very in depth about the process, in case you ever want to try it lol. I would buy a Patriot he is beautiful, but don't tell him I said that. Sorry for the ramble!!

      Coralocean - No, THANK YOU for the "ramble!" Had to pin the comment. Very interesting - I didn't even give any thought to the feeding requirements of betta fry and that's another element to betta breeding folks should really consider...Sure is an intensely busy project, but so glad to hear you are giving it a try! Please keep us posted. I'll check out Moon River Bettas channel as well - thanks for the recommendation! (and thank you for the kind words about Patriot - I certainly will keep his good looking nature between you and me 🤫...don't need his head swelling anymore, especially with this new bling he must have picked up at the dollar store 😀) Good luck with the breeding project! Thanks for checking out the video! 😀

    I have a 30 gallon, I have two females and one male.
    The male is pretty easy going with the females, he flares up to let them know he wants privacy but doesn't bite, hes really passive.
    The females get alone with each other and the male, each has it's own territory but they dont mind if the other crosses the line.
    Theres a lot of people who will call you names or a terrible fish owner because they go by the advice of others, each fish is different. My one male refused to have anyone in his tank and I respected his wish, but my others get along.
    My goal is to create communities and breed them to help save the bettas, they are losing their natural habitats and are becoming Vulnerable. Not to mention the mistreatment from pet stores and owners neglecting them.
    I hope to change their aggressiveness and get them to live together so they have a better chance at survival, it's a long road but I believe it can be done with patience and care! :)
    Keep up the good work! & I hope you breed them to help keep them on our earth! Dont give up on them! ❤

    My yellow pineapple Betta is super lethargic. He was since I found him in a petstore. I already had a female plakat and was worried she would attack him since I had limited tanks, she kind of noticed he was lethargic and let him be for 3 months. On Valentine's Day he made his first bubble nest. She really digs it, keeps going back to make him chase her, he's too lazy, I could tell she wanted to breed. She still has a intense pink with barring stripes but you can tell she's highly depressed he won't physically take her eggs
    If anyone is interested in seeing my habitat with a male and female for 6 months now. I might share a video on my own page.

I added a super energetic female crowntail, thinking hed be exited, and she kinda tries to attack him shell flash him and puff up. he'll puff up really big and scare her away before they really fight though.

    Just picked up my first Betta. He wasn’t looking too good at the lfs. They had a bunch on sale that looked as though they were knocking on deaths door. I one I picked was just lying on the bottom of the cup they had him in and his water had all but evaporated. I had a 20 gallon long planted tank that I never planned on adding fish to After a few hours in his new home he started to swim and explore. He’s looking better every day now and I believe he will be fine now. He’s become a welcome addition to the tank and shares it with my 4 nerite snails

And I'm sure yours loves you now for rescuing him from that petri dish prison he was in at the LFS! 👍He should color up and look better each day - very glad to hear you got one! They are wonderful fish, learn to recognize you, and their behaviors are fantastic. Enjoy! Thanks for checking out the video!

    I have had a Male half moon (red purple) in his own tank for about 7 months....he seemed kind of bored and always staying in his floating log. I also had a pink female half moon that was staying a corner of a sorority tank all the time, I got her on 12/15/21. I just moved her into his tank, and they both have seemed to perk up and move around a lot more. I hope they mate.

    Hi Mike, very useful and practical topic. I have enjoyed success with a dozen Bettas growing up together in my heavily planted 35 gal tank, and it was very rewarding and interesting. The grow out Betta fry from a small breeding tank matured together with males and females living together quite happily. They gave each other space and respected the dominant fish in the group. Bigger tanks and lots of plant cover however are vital. YO Patriot Dog...….Wasssup?

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  6 лет назад

      Colin - I kinda figured you probably have been through betta breeding and raised them successfully :) Exactly what I've heard - that male and females can be kept sometimes with a large tank and defined territories. I know how heavily planted yours is! Hi Meg - you know...that purple female was never around long enough for me to name her, or to figure out exactly what type of betta she was.....Since this is Patriot's tank, and blue bettas aren't his type, according to him, I had to take the females back to the local fish store.....The females, though, in my local fish store - same thing....just labeled as females. I'm not sure which type she was. Unfortunately, I don't know much about female bettas. The females in the video were the first I tried in 10 years in the hobby....

    I have a male and female betta in a 29 long, no other tank mates except some snails. Since the tank is so big and densely planted, the fish seem to get along with each other fine. But once I change the water, the male goes absolutely beserk towards the female and starts nesting, thinking it’s breeding season.

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад +1

      He probably does think it could be breeding season! Water changes will do that.....And I'm sure they get along great in the 29 long - plenty more room and heavily planted to segregate territory. This tank was only a 10, so not nearly enough room. You are definitely going to be fine in that 29 👍

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад +1

      Draco - I would say, yes, absolutely. 90 gallons provides plenty of room for the male (and the females) to carve out their own territories. He shouldn't have any issue with the swordtails at all - it would be with the female bettas. Though they will want to breed (hopefully they do for you!) bettas will be bettas and whether female or male, like to establish territories, especially before or after breeding....but if I had a 90 gallon ready, I would go for it...I think you'll be fine

I'm not familiar whether you need 3 or 4 or more, but I did keep the two female bettas together in my 20 gal for a few weeks and they were great together. I would say go for it, for sure!

    • @kelseymoo9515
      @kelseymoo9515 6 лет назад +2

      yes... i would do 5+ as fewer may (read: MAY. it's not a guarantee but it's more likely if there's fewer) pick on each other. probably wouldn't do so in less than 20 gallons and lots and lots of hiding places, and monitoring for signs of abnormal levels of aggression (some nipped fins and aggression at first is fine but if one is constantly bullying i would remove them). introducing them at the same time (and younger may be easier, rather than a female who is older and used to solitude) might be easier than one at a time. it also depends on personalities. some females are too aggressive while others are too passive to coexist.

    • @rods1597
      @rods1597 6 лет назад +1

      @dmichaelsfishden  6 лет назад

      Rod - I think it's definitely worth a try....but, like kelsey said above, sometimes it depends on the personalities - I think with these cases, the best way is to experiment since everyone's situation is a bit different. But a nice big sorority would be pretty cool to have! 👍💯

    How many male and females bettas can i put in a 55 gallon tank

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  5 лет назад

      James - this is a really good question. I've never kept Bettas in a big tank, but my advice here would be to proceed slowly. Maybe try one male on each side of the tank and see if they keep their own separate territories. Usually, you don't want to keep 2 males together, but in a tank this big, it may be enough room so they can avoid each other. With the females, you can try adding 2 females to each male and see how that goes first. Bettas are bettas and are all fairly territorial, so just know the females may start going after each other and the males either at the start or a few weeks afterward. I can really only speak to how I might try this, and I would probably start with a male on each side, then monitor - if all is well, I might add 2 females to each male, but I would monitor that again to make sure there is enough room....Sorry I couldn't give exact numbers since I've never done this personally, but hopefully this is helpful in some way....

    My male Betta is super chill but sometimes I see him swimming with the guppies and is super chill with a colorful guppy that I didn’t even notice until like a week later he even swims beside the colorful guppy too that’s how I noticed him I have a backup tank in case he decides to fight but it’s been well over a month and they still chilling so is mine possibly good to have a female in the tank I do plan on moving the male guppy if needed but I don’t know if he will be chill with a female betta like the guppies

      Ah! Sorry to hear, Jovon....remember you can always put a sponge over the filter intake to prevent that. 👍 Don't feel bad, though...we've all been there. My filters have eaten fish too, back in the day. Now I put a sponge over every filter intake....

    I know I'm a little late to the party at this point, so I apologize! I'm just curious if you would ever try again. You could use a breeder to get them used to each other, or even just another tank side by side to see if they flare at each other and how they will react. I would also suggest quarantining the female and when she is good to go to main tank, you do a complete overhaul of the tank to break up any territory Patriot has made. Add her in first, and then add in Patriot after a few minutes. Definitely keep an eye on for awhile to make sure they are okay. If it doesn't work out, you have two tanks (or maybe a friend would be willing to keep the female).

    My two bettas are doing amazing right now the female betta was added and no problems came around but they will only be in the same tank for a few days, I don’t just keeping female bettas with a male bettas for long periods of time but just for breeding or like what I’m doing is fine as long as they have good personalities etc.

    Hey please help me.
    Can l care 5 female 1 male bettas in a 21 gallon tank?

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  5 лет назад +1

      Jose - you can try it, but I would keep an eye on things. In a 21 gallon tank, it may work, but bettas are bettas and they can all be territorial and aggressive, depending on their personality. A lot will depend on the personality of your bettas. If you see a lot of aggression and chasing, you may need to go down to 3 females, one male, etc...Try to create a lot of boundaries in the tank, places each Betta can "claim" - it would also be helpful to plant it pretty well - this will help establish territory. I know people who have kept one male and 5 females no problem, and others that did the same and it didn't turn out so great...so no reason you can't try it, just monitor them well until they all settle in - hope that helps!

    Can i keep 2 males in a 9 gallon tank

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  5 лет назад +1

      I wish I could say yes, but I just wouldn't be comfortable with it - With 2 in a 9 gallon tank they will most likely fight, eventually, and one may kill the other. With a 9 gallon tank, I would stick to 1 male 👍

    • @debra2700
      @debra2700 Год назад

      @@dmichaelsfishden This video is old but under no circumstances or tank size do you ever put males together. They will fight to the death so if this guy buys a bigger tank and throws two males in, their deaths are on you.

    Can I keep 1 male and 1 female in a 10 gal

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад

      Leo - you can try it and see how they respond. All Bettas are different, with different temperaments. It didn't really work with mine, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't work for you. If you have enough driftwood and plants, etc...to break things up so they can establish territories, it might work. They may try to breed, which would be great, and they can certainly co-exist, but, Bettas are Bettas and they do get territorial to a certain extent. You can definitely give it a try - if after a while you notice them flashing at each other or chasing each other, you may want to separate them after that. I know a lot of Betta breeders will introduce a female to a male, just for breeding purposes - but once they breed, they often remove the female from the tank. Hope that helps a little!

    Absolutely, correct you cannot keep a male betta with female betta...putting two female betta with your betta..lucky they didn't harm or killed him...research carefully on how to breed...also if success ..be prepare to house about 50 estimated baby betta frys...good luck ! Check "Creative Pet Keeping."

      Lflower1 - No kidding, right? I didn't have the female bettas in there longer than an few hours, monitoring things, then took them out - Certainly don't want to try this for the first time with a $30 male koi betta...maybe down the line - but I have nowhere to house 50 fry...the grow out tank I just put together is for Krib fry...another story all together...appreciate you checking out the video! I am a fan of Creative Pet Keeping - I'll have to check out her Betta vids! :)

      You CAN keep a male & female in the same tank in some instances. I did.
      They weren't what you'd call a breeding pair - the male was mature but timid and she lost interest eventually.
      They paid no attention to each other. He was not a breeder.
