In this video, we’re going to talk about what you need to know if you have high cholesterol on keto. The American Heart Association guidelines actually state that “total cholesterol is not significantly associated with heart disease.” Your body makes cholesterol to make hormones, cell membranes, bile, and vitamin D.
Total cholesterol is really LDL, HDL, and triglycerides combined. Whenever a person gets a cholesterol test, they may also want to get an advanced lipid profile. This is an advanced test that measures the two different types of LDL.
The two types of LDL are large buoyant and small dense (sdLDL-C). The type of cholesterol that can be dangerous is the small dense (sdLDL-C). The small dense type may be a better marker for predicting future potential heart problems and a better indicator of inflammation inside of the arteries. The small dense type of LDL comes from a high-carb diet.
By doing the healthy version of keto, you can get into ketosis and start burning fat. There will be certain times where your cholesterol goes up and down. But, as long as you keep your carbs low, you’ll get more of the large buoyant LDL and not the small dense type.
A few potential causes of inflammation in the arteries:
• Seed oils
• Glucose
• Smoking
• Junk food
• Low vitamin E

Thanks for watching! I hope this helps you better understand high cholesterol on keto.
I watched your videos years ago when you still had your little white board easel and not a whole lot of subscribers. I knew back then you were a born teacher! What I didn't know is that 4.5 million people would appreciate your talent as much as I did! Congrats! I'm also pleasantly shocked that you are providing all of these valuable lessons for free. You are a true hero Dr. Berg!!👍❤🙏
He is global. He gets a lot of requests to translate his vids to Arabic. I believe it has much to do with how Muslims embrace fasting as part of their wisdom. Kind of cool to see the doc bringing the world together in health.
It's free for us to watch but the advertisers would pay for it. It's very important not to skip ads. That's the least we could do.
They do not get paid more if you watch the ads. They are paid the same if you skip.
@@ericcarve4476 No, they only get paid if you watch the ads.
Wrong. If you use an ad blocker you deprive them of revenue, but they get revenue whether you kick skip ad or watch the whole thing
So interesting. I just had my blood test done and everything is fine but my dr wants to put me on statins because my LDL ( not the small type ) is high by his standard he thinks it’s genetic. I should have him watch this RUclips video because I refuse to take any drugs. I don’t take anything right now not even a Tylenol and I’m going to keep it that way. I’m almost 70 years old and proud to say I’ve never felt better in my life.
....and what happens if you mention the internet?? :))));((((
@@margottfon330 my dr is pretty open minded. He listens well when I talk to him. That’s unusual to have a dr like that in Manhattan. I love my dr but he is still from the old school. He won’t insist on me taking the statins if I refuse which I will. I believe they must offer you the statins by medical standards otherwise they can be held liable by the “medical police “
@@shoshana7412 Thank you. I'm glad your doctor is a good person. I'll be doing my best, which is quite a challenge, I must say, considering I've CFS. Vicious circle...one should be really healthy to get help from the health system :D Best 🌹
Stop talking and get on some medication before it's too late.
@@David53D David, you don't believe in the idea 'the overall high cholesterol is ok' then?...
I'm tempted to list Dr. Berg as my primary doc. I've gotten more information from just a few of his videos than I have EVER gotten from any doctor I've seen in my whole life.
We should all start listing dr. Berg as our primary lol
same here
Haha... I actually did that at a walk in clinic... put Dr E Berg as my Family Dr... 🤣😂
is he a medical doctor?????
So true. And if you dont' believe it, do you own research then come back and just bath in the knowledge
Thanks for this video and your other videos too. Loved the graphics in this one. Feels like you're taking us on a journey in the body. Learning so much about how our bodies work 💗
My " crazy " chlorestoral was 295 November 2020 . The doc gave me a prescription for statins. It's still sitting on the shelf at the pharmacy.
Thank God for the good Dr Berg .
👍
My tests results had my doctor worried so he ordered advance test where it looks into my blood vessels (can’t recall test name). When I received results of 0
the nurse was surprised and commented it’s the best one and had never before seen that result before. I had refused to take meds for high cholesterol for years since losing leg strength when I was taking it. Every year thereafter doctor was worried my cholesterol report kept getting higher. Dr. Berg is right.
So what did you tell your doctor ?
@@lmr691 wow. My mom recently lost all leg strength from taking cholesterol meds, to the point that she was hospitalized. She's recovered, but her doctor put her back on it when her cholesterol went back up.
@@aprilp7744 I am glad your Mom is better. I hear the concern in your message. My husband won’t listen to alternatives and continues on medicine. I wish he could find another doctor to reevaluate but he won’t. For me, it was a good decision to follow diet and vitamin recommendations so I cook that way now hoping it will keep him safe. I do think the fresh vegetables, non-gmo foods and cooking is helping us both. Take care of you both.
I think high cholesterol and how the body deals with it is also determined by genetics. My grandma ate very well and always had high cholesterol. She lived alone and was healthy until passing at 99
Wow that interesting. You have good genes.
as he said in the video, the high total cholestral doesnt give useful info.
I remember eating low fat but healthy superfoods with a cholesterol of 105. I kept getting sick every 3-4 months and didn’t feel great like I do on Keto. I wonder what my cholesterol is now.
Actually, passed a certain age high LDL is associated with longevity, in several observational studies. It's also been shown that LDL particles are involved in the immune response. They can for instance bind to some pathogen antigens and thus help with their clearance by the liver. So LDL is not necessarily the vilain that the big pharma corrupted medical dogma has been painting all along. We really need to do our own research rather than just saying amen to drug dealers.
Can be, but not always, actually is probably genetic only sometimes. Mostly seems to be in our control.
Mine has been 348 since I was 21. I am 57. I have NEVER had high blood pressure .. I have perfect heartbeat.
I never believed it would affect me. I have now lived a keto lifestyle for three years.. as I learned I adjusted diet, exercise and breathing..meditation etc.
I am in the BEST shape of my Life.
My brain is equivalent in response time and calculations as a 25 year old. . ( Brain Age tests)
This is important info .
Good Fortune to YOU!!! 🙏
Same. My cholesterol was high in my 20's. 248. Now I'm 60 and it's 348. No high blood pressure. No medication. Eat well and excersize. My triglycerides are optimal and so is my HDL and VLDL. No oxidized lipoproteins.
I eat quite a bit of healthy fats, fish and meats too. Go figure.
People gets shocked when they hear I eat 5-7 eggs a day because eggs have been demonised for its cholesterol
Insulin resistance and system inflammation leads to heart disease; not cholesterol
Triglycerides gets increased only if you are insulin resistant
I've been on a strict Keto plan for a year now.
My recent blood work came out as: Total 490, HDL 86, LDL 393, triglycerides 56.
I plan on going back to my doctor to get the sdLDL-C test. I won't do statins either. Update: I'm going in tomorrow, 4-10-24, for a calcium heart scan, because I'm curious. I'll update again when I get my results.
Lord. Thank goodness I found someone that had high number cholesterol and still here. I just found out mine is over 300. Won’t d😅 statins. Changing my diet

Good morning! This by far one of your greatest ~ we can't thank you enough Dr. Berg. Everyone needs to learn from all this information.
OMG one of the best visualization ever!
One of the best videos I have seen yet on Cholesterol! Thank you for the education!
Check out the Helsinki study. It showed that the higher your cholesterol, the longer you lived, especially in women.
Did you read this study? It tells about opposite results.
What about the ldl though does that matter ?

Thank you so very much!
This is the best presentation I have ever seen. I’m in awe. God bless you and thank you dr. Berg!

Good information Dr. Berg. I have listened to you for years and you always present it in way that is simple to understand. Thanks again.
This is one of your best videos yet. Love the blue screen with the artery. I am sharing this with some of my “beginner keto” friends. Awesome.
Wow Dr. Berg 🤓 this was sooooome awesome presentation!! I‘m sharing it right now with my doctor, family and friends. You are in fact the very best at clearing up all the misconseptions. Thank you!
A great video, thank you! Since I've been watching your videos for the last 10 months, I've been finally able to fix several health issues I've head since a while. Still working on increasing HDL and lowering Tryglicerides but the've gotten much better and what I find quite important understanding and taking care of my body as a whole which is quite rare in western medicine. Thank you!!
I really enjoy these youtube videos! Thank you, so informative and I learn quite a bit.
I've been watching and learning from your videos for years. This is one of your all time best! Thank you!!
this is an amazing video, years I am watching you, and there are those few stand-out videos you do, this is one of them
Loved the visual explanation. It’s so beautiful, and you Dr Berg are the Best teacher . Love it 🌹🌹🌹💣
Dr Berg, the AHA journal that you reference in the link is discussing dietary cholesterol which as you know is different from serum cholesterol. I just wanted to bring it to your attention as it confused me. Love all your videos...been watching for a couple of years now and have taken your information to heart. No pun intendend.. Thank you for all the excellent information you provide.
Just did another lab visit. Thank you for your explanation, supporting details and reassurance on blood studies for cv risk and inflammation :)
I've been off keto for over a year and regretting it but I'm back and ready to make another go of this. O haven't watched any new videos, but I have to say, WOW! The visuals are AMAZING!
Same here. Went off keto and my whole body crumbled! Back on it for a month now. Welcome back!
Dr Berg...you have saved so many lives...you are heaven sent. So many Dr"s are readily to write a script for there patients...you however teaches us the root to our ailments...you are so much appreciated...I thank you.
I thank God for all these conversation, i got lip profile test yesterday and i had total cholesterol 211 and since yesterday am down and worried but now greatly encouraged and happy. They even gave me statin drug which i started yesterday but i will not take it again. Dr Thank you.
Statin, NO GOOD.
Dumb. No ding on Berg but at this point literally every lipidoligist agrees that LDL should be low because it leads to atherosclerosis. Watch any podcast with Dr. Thomas Dayspring is a true expert. Also it’s worth noting that statins are damn near natural product.
@@christopheroconnell7579you obviously didn't watch the video...there is more than 1 type of LDL. There is no evidence supporting your claim. If that were the case...why would individuals with low LDL still have heart attacks and strokes? And why do individuals on statins still have heart attacks and strokes?
You are way more informative than my primary care doctor. Thank you 🙏 Dr. Berg!
A lot of primary doctors are useless . They work like some robots :)
Because he makes things up and twists studies to fit his narrative 🤷🏻♂️
@@Lolipop59 this is so true they are just trained to prescribe . They aren't trained in enough areas. Mine keeps trying to put me on statins. My ldl is very high due to low carb. I just went through hell on zoloft with side effects and withdrawal. Had to taper fiver months which was quick but according to gp she never hears of withdrawal! Makes me so angry . Also I'm.on hrt. She also jad little knowledge on this .
Rene, best part o fhis, he is generous sharing his knowledge as well as Dr. Jason Fung and others. who needs to go to see a doctor nowadays.
A doctor has l 30 mins to spend with each patient ,most of the visit is taken up by going over the last visit and asking question about your state of mind, living conditions, who's goingnto take care of you after he fill you up with alot of pills that's going tomake whatever onditiin you have worst. By the time they finish that combo ,your time is up then your given another script and sent on your way and you pay your deductible, make another appt. To return to do the samething with additional problems that require another medication.
Dr Berg, this was a fantastic explanation!! I love how you are able to present (often) complex information in a very clear and understandable manner. Only the very best teachers have this skill. Thank you for this, and all you are doing to help people.
Again, thank you Dr. Berg for another great video. And thanks to many helpful comments below. I've learned so much and now I stop worrying about my high cholesterol numbers (250 range) even though I eat really well, exercise regularly, always in excellent shape since I was a child.
I have 450
This information is so important, many people are put on statins because their total cholesterol is high without checking the complete lipid profile! Statins are very damaging to the liver!!!! Our healthcare system is very broken when this is allowed to go on.
Best analogy I've heard is comparing Cholesterol to fire fighters. When there's a fire (inflammation) in the body and fire fighters (cholesterol) show up to put out that fire, you don't blame them for starting the fire in the first place.

My boyfriend's cholesterol was high. We didn't take any foods out of his diet. We increased avacados, nuts, oatmea. That's it. It dropped 20 in 8 months.
Incredible
Well, if you Increase avocado's, nuts, oatmeal then for sure you decrease something else in your case most probably Junk food. Thus, no wonder Cholesterol decreases, tell him to go vegan for a month and see what that does, of course do not become a pudding and Oreo vegan but rather eat whole foods.
Water fasting for 15 days would have dropped it more then 3 times of that and detoxify your whole body and reboot it from head to toe.

Superb! Best easy-to-follow educational video I've seen so far on this incredibly important topic. Quick question: I've been on clean keto since 7/1 - seeing tremendous results. A recent NMR LipoProfile showed small particle LDL in the mid-range. Given I'm burning off so much stored fat, should I expect the reduction in small particle LDL to take some time before it drops to the lower range?

Awesome information . I have never had high cholesterol until recently after starting a serious keto diet! Its not even really that high but now I know the reason why! Im going to ask for that extra test! Thanks Dr. Berg!
My mom is 91 years old and doing well and has never taken a prescription medication in her entire life. She and I avoid all prescriptions because they all appear to have unpleasant side effects. Dr Berg has helped me so much with my liver problems just taking otc supplements, intermittent fasting and keto, I’ve only been doing it 30 days and have had remarkable results. I’m not looking for excuses to go back to my regular eating habits that got me into trouble in the first place. I’m keto forever, though I may have a cheat day every few months. Doc thank you for this specific info on which cholesterol is dangerous and what type of test I should get to differentiate it with other cholesterols. I’ll do it on the next blood test.
You also mentioned on another video that my cholesterol doesn’t matter when my Triglycerides is really low right?
I did a test more than half a year ago, can’t remember it properly but my ‘bad’ cholesterol was apparently more than 300, but my triglycerides was 14.
My parents freaked out cause they still think in the old ways the way most doctors do and begged me to take cholesterol medicines, as they do too.
I haven’t been able to convert them to the RIGHT way of thinkin, but I denied taking meds as well. I just stick with my OMAD lifestyle and see how I do in my test next January/February :)
Doc, I needed this information, thank you sir!
Thanks for the detail explanations.
I lowered my weight by 20kg, but my recent blood analysis had LDL spiked. Kinda know what happened. This video is a useful reference.
Thanks for this video very helpful😇🙏
Thank You Dr,. Great Information !
After following your healthy keto plan I am 125lbs now at 5'4 and feel great! Was able to lower my fasting glucose by 20 points. My recent cholesterol test showed my LDL was 216 and of course my doctor and a cardiologist said way to high and stop doing that stupid keto diet. REALLY??Both which are older and overweight 😄. Thanks for all your videos about cholesterol!!
How do you feel now?
Very pleased to see this video. Two weeks ago I was told I had high cholesterol but since my hdl is high and triglycerides low I am not taking statin as prescribed.Prescribed because total cholesterol was high.I have been doing keto zone diet and got healed of about 6-7 diseases thank God and so this video is so timely.Peace of mind. Thanks Dr Berg
Exactly!👌
Also the hdl triglyceride ratio is the most important. Google it.
@@plantluvr2917 my hdl is 2.05 and triglycerides is 0.7 mmol. I live out of America so it's different so not sure of the ratio of both but overall ratio is 3.8
@Falhawk73 divide triglyceride by the hdl. The closer to 1.0 the better. I think anything under 5.0. Google it to find good explanation for it. Eliminating sugar and simple carbs is the best way to lower triglyceride quickly.
Thanks Doc. This was very helpful and informative.

A1C drop of course, lost 50 pounds... do I need to go on ? feel better and in more shape than when I was in high school.. all my pain went away...Results speak for themselves. But I'm sure the millions of lives he has saved don't mean anything to you.
This was great!! Thank you so much 🙏👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Just got a high cholesterol diagnosis, this was extremely helpful.
Informative chock full of good content- thank you Dr Berg ❤🙏
Thank you so much for this video, Dr. Berg. My blood results came out similar to Karen's. Please thank her too, for sharing her results. I also had a "Blood test, comprehensive group of blood chemicals - Details" page with my blood tests and everything there was within standard ranges. This video and the AHA article you reference here is great backup for talking about Cholesterol with my general practitioner, and for us all to learn about these systems in the body.
That visual and last couple of sentences are very powerful. My husband has been doing keto for 4 months Im getting on board and stopping the sugar train. Thanks for the motivation Dr. Berg
Glad to help! Be well!
@@Drberg My Mom is an otherwise healthy 70 year old but when she eats sugar her blood pressure skyrockets. Is that at all related to the mechanism you outlined where sugar damages the walls and begins clotting?
@@Drberg my mom in keto for about 4 months and just had a small stroke. She was hospitalized for 4 days. Drs blaming her keto diet. I’m going to send them this video.
God bless you doc. Awesome explanation.
Great video - kind of wish you discussed triglycerides which are tested & included in a normal blood lipid test and are extremely important. Further the triglyceride figure can be used to calculate VLDLs & is meaningful towards the small particle LDLs. The ratio of Triglycerides to HDL is an important one, smaller the better. Or maybe that discussion is in another video? Probably. Your videos are excellent & highly informative.
Special effects with you in the artery is very cool!
engesh plez
just eat dr berg he will make everything healthy
I got blood work done recently, and I've got high LDL, low HDL, and high Tri-g's, so I started searching the interwebs for information and came across this channel. Great stuff! I'm learning a lot, and have started IF, and working towards Keto.
You should also pay attention to vitamins, as high triglycerides and low HDL imply that your cells have troubles in beta-oxidation metabolic pathway.
You make things easy to understand
All this info! Thanks so much.
Most welcome!
