My dad had high cholesterol and heart problems most of his adult life (along with a few heart attacks and a triple bypass). I blame the nutrition industry directly for his health woes. I can distinctly remember in the 60's we switched from butter to "oleo" margarine, ate everything low-fat - even cutting the fat from our meat etc. Yet it never did any good. He passed away from congestive heart failure. I was getting overweight and exercised and dieted and ran daily never seeing any improvement. A year-and-a-half ago switched to keto - lost 45 pounds in 3 months- my good and bad cholesterol evened out and a myriad of other physical ailments disappeared in a matter of weeks. It works! The health industry are at best incompetent and at worst compliant with an INDUSTRY bent on making money.

Hi Dr. Berg - I just did a search for 'familial hypercholesterolemia keto' on YT (while signed in) and was very happy to get this video as the 3rd suggestion with another video of yours as the 4th. While not signed in, this video came up SECOND!
Very helpful content, thank you. And thank you for always adding links to your reference studies in the description. There is a lot of content out there with questionable sources, or no sources cited, on both sides of the veg/keto fence. Thanks again!

My PCP started caring for me in 2008. I had a 73 GFA at that point. Within 18 months he managed to destroy my kidneys with crestor to the tune of getting my GFR down to 42. He lowered my cholesterol from 160 to under 100 at the cost of catastrophic kidney function loss to me. We argued about it and he denied statins were the cause of the catastrophic kidney function reduction. I decided to ignore him and have stopped all statins ever since. The result was that my kidney function slowly increased from 42 back up to 59 but that took 7 years. I may have FH. I have rare AB+ blood (2% of population) so that may be a factor. To his surprise, I chose to risk dying from a heart attack over being on dialysis by my mid fifties. All I really needed to be told was to stop all sugar!!!

Working through this situation myself. I was diagnosed with HeFH through Cleveland Clinic back in November. I knew I had high cholesterol (total 500-600). I have had the runaround with statins, Zetia, Vytorin, Rosuvastatin, and Repatha. Now have 12 year old daughter also newly diagnosed with HeFH (total 300-400). Will be meeting with her new Cardio doc in a week. I also have bicuspid aortic valve (replaced in 2021), widow maker 8 weeks after, 2nd OHS 6 months later for CABG x2, 4th stent put in Sept 2023 and ablatipn/thrombectomy on mural thrombus in right lower leg in Nov. 2023. Trying to navigate not not wanting to take cholesterol meds, going carnivore and in the gym 5 days per/week. I am a 45 year old female. I did have the indepth lipid panel and showed very high levels of small particle. I have been told I am NOT a candidate for CAC since I have resiual calcium from valve replacement (was a Bentall procedure due to porcelain aortic root and ascening aorta, calcium on coronart artery buttons).

After taking antibiotics, one year, I became hyper sensitive to grain. I spent over a year being so sick and losing so much weight, people were startled. No docs could diagnose, I just stopped eating wheat and grains and switched to nuts. Not keto, just no grains at all, except white rice on occasion. I don't worry about my BP, cholesterol or weight anymore. Yes, it's the carbs. In particular all the carbs we eat that are breads which also contain sugar. They have GMO'd grains to death. I have FH and I could eat grass and it makes no difference. My LDL was 390 Total over 500. I did have to go on a Double dose of a PCSK9 Inhibitor as my only way to reduce in the face of heart and vascular disease. If cholesterol were the MAIN problem with heart disease I would already be dead. I’m 61. Statins did about kill me and affected my brain badly. So listen to this advice I’ve lived it. My health has tanked in the last 10 years now and I'm at my wits end now. This is me. I was put on statins from the age of 18 because of my family history. I stopped taking them about 10 years ago because I was convinced they were causing me more issues that they were stopping and my cholesterol levels were only slightly higher than the average anyway. Luckily, I had already found your channel a few years back too so I already do keto & fasting, I take Niacin as you've recommended it before and I take wheatgerm oil as my vitamin E supplement. Honestly, I've never been in better health than I am now and I'm 39. Just goes to show, you don't need to be an 'expert' to take in information and apply it to your own needs. I’ve had high cholesterol for decades. I also have MS. The myelin shield that is attacked by MS is made of cholesterol and taking statins further causes increased problems with that. My understanding is that coronary plaques are made from calcium, not cholesterol. If so, we should be taking Vitamin D3 with Vitamin K2, because K helps D to steer calcium into your bones, not your arteries or kidneys. And carbohydrates cause a multitude of health problems including heart attacks. Cutting out gluten entirely and lowering carbohydrates has fantastic health benefits.

Thank you so much for this video, Dr Berg. My MD, before she returned to Columbia, referred me to a Cardiac Risk Clinic because she couldn’t understand my lipid panel. I’ve been on keto for about 2.5 years and have been eating carnivore for about 6 weeks, and the arthritis in my knee and index finger has calmed down to point of no pain. The cardiologist says I must have FH or I wouldn’t have such high cholesterol levels. On the keto diet, my lipid levels are just into range for HDL, low triglycerides, zero on CACS, and slightly elevated ApoB. My LDL has come down by about 20%. I asked if I could add niacin and he said he’s rather I NOT do that. I’ve got my A1c to 6.5 and am working to get it below 5.7 in the next 6 months. So, since I’m feeling like I’m running counter to the traditional medical advice (I said no to statins but yes to EZETIMIBE), I’m just so grateful for your video on diet and supplements for FH. I know I’m super sensitive to carbs - hence my trying carnivore for 3-6 months - I feel like I have a good starting place with this now. I took the genetic test, but have yet to be contacted with the results. Your suggestion of doing a dietary change then testing the results before changing to some other way of eating is very helpful. I have breakdowns often because being on keto raised my LDL even higher but I can't tolerate carbs cuz they give me palpation now. My last blood test was: LDL 208, TG 90, HDL 60, VLDL 16. A1c was 5.5 & my calcium score CAC was 0. When I went on keto my LDL went from 133 to 208 within 2 years. My dad has been on a statin since he was 40. Now he's 65. I don't want to take a statin. I intermittent fast, still eat a cross between keto paleo. Sometimes eat oats. I take plant sterols 2000mg a day now. I'm actually waiting for my new labs to see if the sterols have helped. I eat eggs and avocado every morning to break my fast and it hold me till dinner. If I eat anything g else like greek yogurt & nuts I am hungry before dinner. There is definitely a huge market for FH experts to hand out info on diet, supplements, statins. Thank you Dr Berg for producing this video and please do more!

I have to say I feel better than I ever have. My triglycerides are 69. My doctor keeps trying to put me on a statin. The last time my feet and joints hurt so bad. I could barely walk. If you knew me, you would know I am a very active person. Off the statins no problem with moving. I am taking your gallbladder medicine. It seems to help my digestion. Thank you. I will try adding niacin.

This popped up at the most opportune moment. Thank you for addressing diet and FH. I have FH, originally diagnosed when my cholesterol was over 500 at the age of 32. I maxed out dosing on statins with no benefit. Moved to Vytorin with great decrease in overall numbers but I feel like garbage most of the time (brain fog, muscle aches, low stamina ect). Started with PCSK9 in combo with Vytorin and numbers are now at the low side of "normal". As a result my hormomes are disregulqted, libido has tanked and and I still don't feel great. Learning the importance of cholesterol in the body, Keto, and IF. I am now going AMA off some of my meds because I believe most of my problems are as a direct result of the meds. My HGbA1C is 4.8%, so no issues there. I have also been studying the Keto lifestyle and OMAD (as Keto has knocked out my appetite completely). Educating myself because the cardiac professional community refuses to look at modern evidence and facts.

Thank you for sharing, your story is pretty interesting. There is evidence that statins increase mortality and disregulate many normal physiological processes in your body. My Dr is pushing me to get on Lipitor aggressively when I had rock bottom trigs, and above normal HDL but 209 for LDL. I've never been tested for FH but everything I look up and lectures on youtube show that there is NO reason to take a statin at my age and the side effect are signficant. It wouldn't surprise if lots of people that have "normal range" LDL who get a pat on the back but actually if they are eating lots of sugar and refined carbs... they creating the conditions to do more damage with their lower LDL than someone on LCHF diet eating whole foods with a higher LDL. We have been lied to by industry for decades. I wish you the best health regardless.

I was diagnosed with FCHL. I tried the carnivore and keto diets for six months and vegan diet for 30 days (that's all I could stand doing). All of my lipid numbers kept going in the wrong direction on the keto and carnivore diets. My LDL, TC and Trig's went up and my HDL went down. The Trig/HDL ratio got over 10! When I went vegan, surprisingly, all of my numbers returned to being "in the green", I lost a bunch of weight around my mid-section (my waist returned to what it was in high school), and I felt WAY better. The only problem was that being on a vegan diet was a PITA and I absolutely hated it. Trying to find a happy medium now.

BP is significantly lower by keeping strictly to healthy Keto and using all the recommended nutrients listed here except for policosanols 🧐 As expected my MD recommends statins, however these play havoc on balance, strength & endurance. I will be reviewing the supplied links here and the summary information is much appreciated as always! Thanks for raising awareness 😉

I have a high cholesterol family. Both grandmothers take statins. Tried reducing my HIGH cholesterol at age 25 with submerged chopped up garlic in ~80 proof alcohol and drinking a tablespoon in the morning. That reduced my cholesterol two-fold after a month. Father advised to exercise with heavy weights (he has his cholesterol under control that way, while his brother is suffering from it and is obese), going to do bloodwork soon to see if it has any effect on me. Also tried keto (for half a year) and intermittent fasting (longest fast was around 80 hours). That didn't seem to help that much according to bloodwork. Everyone is different and is important to do objective tests to see if it has any impact. Stay healthy.

As a carnivore and someone with FH, I urge you to get your bloodwork done before starting a new diet. Getting a CAC scan is a good idea too - they’re only $100 (a bargain for peace of mind and a LOT less than stent surgery!). I see some people having heart attacks after starting a low carb diet and blaming the diet when they likely had arterial issues before they started it. My total cholesterol has always been high and went up to over 500 on carnivore, but I have zero plaque buildup. I’m keeping an eye on it and if that changes, I’ll cross that bridge later. Note: I’ve never smoked, no insulin resistance, no chronic stress, etc.

Took low dosage statin (rosuvastatin 5mg) and ezetimibe (10mg) for 3 weeks along with major lifestyle change and the figures dropped dramatically to 170 total and 114 LDL. HDL also dropped from 50 to 42. TG dropped from 128 to 70. But I don't feel any healthier to be honest, psychologically relieved either. After since I knew that I'm probably an FH patient I experienced several times of panic attacks. I am 31, I look into the mirror to see if my arcus rings are getting bigger every single hour, and am suffering from fear of sudden death.

My LplP and Lplc numbers went way high on my keto diet, my triglyceride and small LDL particle numbers were very low. This is all very confusing to me because high LplP is still very controversial apparently as far as how much risk that carries for heart disease. Do you have any ideas about this doctor Berg?

I’ve started the KETO DIET and intermediate fasting about 4 months ago, last blood test was around 5 months ago
    My LDL is 240
    Triglycerides are 221
    HDL 28
    VLDL 45
Extremely scary numbers because I’m also having bad chest pains and palpitations for years and it’s getting worse
I’m gonna get a new test done on my blood and see where my cholesterol levels are at now if they haven’t been lowering I will have to unfortunately take the statins prescribed to me.
I’m pretty sure I have clogged arteries I just haven’t had the test done yet and the doctors for whatever reason don’t think it’s a serious issue since I’m relatively still young they don’t take me serious. I’m 30 btw
I pray I can heal my body before something happens.

Thank you for bringing this important information about sdldl vs lbldl... I have a question, supposed one has low number of sdldl and high number of lbldl (after taking a test), will it stay forever or will it change over time (with age or with other conditions.... lifestyle changes for example)?

My total cholesterol is 340 for my last blood test. Dr wanted to put me on a statin. I went and had a CAC test done and my calcium score was 3.23 just above the 0 score which means you have no calcium build up. So not taking a statin.

I am keen on getting your advice wrt my recent lipids test results:
    TC 273

    TG 58
    LDL 208
    TG/HDL Ratio 1.0
I take medication for hypertension and am suspected of having Familial Hypercholesterolemia (have corneal arcus, so it seems). Quit Statins 3 months ago. I do intermittent fasting 18:6 every day for 2 months. Have lost about 10kg. BMI of 20-21. Performed an Ankle Brachial Index DIY with a score of 1.5.

Thank you for your informative video, I would however like to ask why diuretics makes the situation worse please?

Some of his videos on diuretics may answer this. Also, some of his earlier videos on cholesterol as well. ❤

Thanks for the video. Imagine going to a car mechanic to fix a noise in the engine and are given a pair of ear plugs as the solution to the problem; today's doctors wouldn't have that type of service right? I am very concerned how many doctors just carelessly prescribe statins as a solution but completely destroy their patient's bodies and then blame the patient's genes.
