Next physical 2017. Same thing, differnt doc wants me to take statins. Get this:
      Total count:272
      Ldl 188

      TGs 43

Ldl is not bad for you, DAMAGED Ldl is bad for you.
Obviously one can lower his damaged Ldl by lowering the Ldl with statins. But what a hideously irresponsible way to handle this.

Until we find a way to reduce/eliminate oxidised LDLs we will be fighting cholesterol unnecessarily, Statins DO NOT control that erroneous part of the total cholesterol they just lower it globally (both HDL and LDL) which is not necessarily the best think to do In my humble opinion. The liver is designed to recycle all that it can especially when it comes to cholesterol but it will NOT recognise the oxidised part of it, the receptors are simply not designed to do that, so it will remain in circulation causing all the problems inside the blood vessels. This is science, proofed science.

I had statins prescribed because my triglycerides were off the chart (so I was told). But statins had a horrible effect on me. I went as white as a sheet, skin was peeling off my knuckles, my ears itched like mad, I was beginning to have memory problems... the effects went on and on. My sister, who was a cardiac nurse at the time, told me it sounded like my endocrine system was being battered. I stopped after 3 months. Some 20 years later, now in my 70s, my heart is strong, my arteries clear. I reduced my triglycerides with some simple lifestyle changes (not that it was at all unhealthy) and my triglyceride numbers are down. Furthermore, there are some _241 species_ of triglyceride and 29 of them _are associated with longevity._ A triglyceride count is too simplistic. Doctors have a habit if recommending statins (and just about any pharmacological intervention) with ease when a better (and cheaper) approach is often simply to change your lifestyle.

After a heart attack at age 80, I decided to give statins one more try. I quit them three different times because of muscle pain, but I read recently that low doses of statins could be beneficial even though they didn't lower cholesterol to desired levels. After muscle pain and now brain fog, I am finally through with statins for good. Another thing doctors don't tell you about statins is that although they slightly lower the risk of heart attack, they don't lower the risk of death.

It depends if you are taking statins for primary prevention or secondary prevention where they definitely do reduce the risk of death. That said, reducing the risk of heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular surgery seems a pretty good deal. Taking statins is also associated with a significantly reduced risk of dementia.
I had terrible liver problems from atorvastatin. It took literally years for my liver function to return to normal. However, 15 years later another doctor recommended a different statin. After a lot of reflection i agreed to take it and now my cholesterol is at a level where plaque reversal is observed. And no side effects. I'm pretty happy with that.
Fluvastatin and rosuvastatin are associated with least risk of muscle pain.

I love Dr. Boz but I now tend to believe that high LDL is of no moment at all if your HDL is over 60 and your TGs are 60 or less. The ratio of TGs to HDL should be one or less. I am a retired Physician. The risk of becoming pre-diabetic or diabetic is somewhat increased when you take statins. Diabetes is a huge risk factor for having a cardiac event. Statins do have anti-inflammatory effects and anti-platelet effects. But I believe the good outweighs the bad when you take statins. If they are helpful, it may not be because they lower LDL. And lowering LDL may possibly be a fool's errand? Nobody should use the terms good cholesterol or bad cholesterol. There is only one cholesterol. Cholesterol is a carrier molecule and a part of both Low-Density Lipoprotein and High-Density Lipoprotein. I still love you Dr. Boz but please desist from ever using the terms good cholesterol and bad cholesterol in the future. I took a statin for 15 years and prescribed statins for 25 years. I am very sorry that I did either. Keto plus a walking program has fixed my blood sugar, my hypertension, and obesity and my lipids except LDL has gone up a lot. HDL is up to 60 and Triglycerides are down to 60. No more Lipitor, Metformin, or Amlodipine! My weight in 18 months down from 185 to 159! I am a carbohydrate addict and in March of 2019 I weighed 208 pounds. That's what eating donuts, apple fritters, and lots of Coca-Cola will do that for you. It did i exactly that for me. On a ketogenic diet, my cravings for sugar and any sweets diminished over time and the cravings are now entirely gone.

Nobody should be on a statin. Statins actually increase the risk of heart disease by increasing the number one risk factor for heart disease which is Type 2 Diabetes. They also cause less cholesterol to be made for cell construction in the arteries which makes arteries less flexible which is another risk factor for heart disease. Doctors should be targeting the real problem which causes cholesterol to be atherogenic, which is inflammation. Because even if you reduce cholesterol with a statin, the cholesterol that is still flowing around in lipoproteins will try to repair any damage to the arteries and leave a plague. If you don't want plaque to build up, reduce inflammation, not cholesterol. In the meantime, by taking these poisons, you're denying every cell in your body the correct amount of an essential substance, which leads to multiple medical problems and diseases. No wonder people have so many adverse effects from taking them. Also, the studies show no real clinical benefit of taking a statin. The people who take statins wind up on operating tables for heart disease in the same numbers as people who aren't on them. They don't prevent anything. They only cause problems. Sadly, most doctors have been brainwashed by the immense propaganda of the drug companies. They even get paid more when prescribing them and get admonished when they don't. The conflict of interest is off the charts. These policies benefit the drug companies, but not the patients.

Also the tiny, tiny positive effect statins have do not come from anything regarding LDL. Statins have a very slight "blood thinning" effect. they reduce risk for clots. Why does it matter? read the book "the clot thickens" and you will know why. Therefore you get the same effect with much less risk by simply taking the low-dose aspirin.

Statins lower LDL particles, via two mechanisms (I'm no doctor - feel free to attack the overall argument). They prevent LDL particle production, or they create extra uptake receptors. However they don't work on LDL remnant particles. The problem with this is that LDL remnants are actually what might be the risk factor. So while LDL is associated with CVD and ALL Cause Mortality, and statins lower LDL, they might no do *anything* to reduce your risk.

I saw your video on Statins and my lipid levels are really good so I thought I should cut out the Statin. My doctor said "NO" . I just ran my risk numbers on the Framingham Risk calculator and i can see why. 14.6% - 20% risk of another MI or death within 10 years. Ouch!!

This is the best explanation of how statins work and why you may or may not need them I have ever heard. Thank you Dr Boz! I recommend everyone considering taking a statin watch videos by Dr Ford Brewer, who only prescribes statins in people with CVD for the purpose of reducing CV inflammation and stabilizing plaque. Further, he only prescribes certain kinds and in such low doses that they do not exacerbate insulin resistance.

I had a total cholesterol level of 175 about 20 years ago as a vegetarian. I never had it checked again until this past Sept. My total cholesterol was 462! My LDL was 332. My tryglyceride level was 47. My doctor immediately wanted to put me on a statin, but I said no. I have been doing Keto since Nov. of 2022. I'm taking CholestOff, reducing red meat and eggs, and increasing salmon and other lean proteins. I'm going to get retested soon. I'm a 64 yr. old female, weigh 115, and am 5'6" tall.

Look into the LMHR study. LMHR = lean mass hyperresponder. Thin athelitc people that go on keto and their LDL goes throught the roof. What Dave feldmanns videos on the topic. LDL doesn't matter, what matters is small-dense LDL (sd-LDL) also called oxidized-LDL (ox-LDL). There is a test for this you cando, LDL subfraction or LDL Pattern. If sd-LDL is low, no issue. And note that high HDL and low triglycerides usually means it's low. My LDL is also high, not that high but still. but almost no sd-LDL. the video forgets the fact that sd_LDL is broken and can not be taken up by the liver as it is not recognized anymore. It doesn't matter how many receptors you have in that case. And the cause for LDL oxidation is high pufa content in the LDL particle (from seed oils and processed foods) plus high blood sugar.

Eggs and red meat are not the evil they've been made out to be. Even Ancel Keys reported that the cholesterol in food does NOT end up in our bloodstream. If you don't know who he is I recommend researching him. He was the father of the Diet-Heart hypothesis, which has been repeatedly debunked. Fats from real food, not seed oils, are healthy and in a keto or low carb diet fat is the energy source, instead of sugars. Eggs are, in fact, one of the most perfect foods there is, because of the high nutrition in the yolks. Red meat is also very good and supplies bio available nutrition that leafy greens can only dream of. The problem is the bread/buns/fries/sugary drinks that are eaten with the burger, not the burger itself.

I'm a retired surgeon. My Dad was in his 80s when I visited and he was bent over in pain, unable to walk to his mailbox. Reviewed meds--took him Off statin. His mental status and muscle pain? GONE in 5 days. Even LDL is not bad, nor triglycerides. KETO diets raise both because they transport fats so if you eat more fat, you need more! All hormones are cholesterol related. The math IS totally messed up. If you have HIGH HDL(good) it falsely RAISES you total cholesterol #!! We need FATS to be healthy. Research is only STARTING to realize how brainwashed we are!!

Isn't inflammation in the arteries what is causing heart disease, not cholesterol per se? I was on statins ten days. Ten days and my glucose levels jumped, my cravings - under control for months - skyrocketed. Just going grocery shopping became hazardous. Headaches, muscle cramps, all from the statins. I have worked so hard to do keto and lose weight and the statins are derailing my progress. They think changing my statin to a different one will remove the side effects. I can test it out on my body. My body will tell me if that is so, but I am not holding my breath. Sugar gave me heart disease and I will really push back at any doctor treating me with meds that raise my glucose again.

My compliments! This is THE best explanatory video about statins and LDL cholesterol I’ve ever seen!!! I’ve recently had cause for personal health concern.
On attending my doctor, it seems my heart is clear and a 12-lead ECG that I recently had is also clear. Despite this, my GP wanted to send me for further assessment at the ‘heart-failure clinic’ (unfortunate name) as I do sometimes have shortness of breath and slightly puffy ankles.
However, on my GP visit a couple of days ago, she told me that, on the basis of my blood test results, they’ve decided there’s no need for further investigation at this stage, so no heart failure assessment is required.
Blood tests, though, show my LDL to be high, I’ve a slightly fatty liver and a larger-than-should-be waistline and high blood pressure. There’s no indication of Type II nor any precursor to Type II. I’m male and just short of 65 years old, but have had (prior to this Covid nonsense, the ridiculous ‘lockdowns’ during which I stopped all exercise) a complete life of sporting fitness and have never smoked nor overly drank alcohol.
On this basis, I’ve been told - just a couple of days ago - that I should consider statins. I said no.
A few days ago, I started on an intermittent fasting regime of one meal per day. I plan to get trimmed back down again by healthy diet/lifestyle means. I’ve also started taking plant sterol supplements, milk thistle and strong-flush niacin.
I may, though, have to take blood-pressure medication as, I believe, high blood pressure is not just a lifestyle issue but is commonly related to ageing and so, in many cases, unavoidable.
Your video (and I’ve just subscribed) has been a great help. I’ve a better understanding now. Thank you so much.
