What Does Withdrawal Feel Like?

  • It isn't always easy to describe the benzo & antidepressant withdrawal experience to others, because it is so much more than a simple list of symptoms. In this video I do describe some of the symptoms I experienced during my Paxil and Xanax withdrawal, but I also put the experience into other terms and share hope for healing. 95 weeks off Klonopin, 60 weeks off Topamax and 19 weeks off Effexor XR. The burning in my body is the most bothersome along with insomnia. Yes, the night sweats are horrible. I wonder if some of these symptoms will last forever or will go away. I have to be "kind" to myself in a way I never was before tapering. I'm thankful for the small steps I'm taking. I can walk an hour a a day and that has saved my body and mind. I can play with my cat! Just one month ago, I could not get my body to sit down and stand up quickly - the body aches were too severe. This month, I'm more mobile. The anger is the emotion most difficult to deal with. I trusted doctors with my body and brain and I was betrayed. I never want to see another doctor as long as I live. As long as our doctors are in bed with Big Pharma, this situation will never change. We must continue to get our stories out to the public.

      So great to hear about the improvements. Yes, you need to feel good about those rather than beating yourself up for anything you aren't able to do at the moment. Keep up the exercise, and use that anger to do something meaningful and productive. You're doing great!

    I've been feeling like this for 2 years while working a physical job and being 100 percent alone. I'm almost there and its getting easier. Dont give up! If I could do this working construction, giving up alcohol, cocaine and benzodiazepines all by myself than you can do it too. I've turned a lot of bad days into good days using will, determination and meditation. If you want to make it you gotta understand that it starts and ends with you. You can do it whether you think you can or not. Anyone can give up and feel like a victim. If your able to find the strength to push through you will be paid in full for your efforts.

    Yours is the best description of withdrawal symptoms I have found. I am 20 months benzo-free, and just begun to feel like myself again. I could not have made it without prayer. Benzo withdrawal is very much a spiritual battle. But one can make it through with faith (that you WILL be well again), determination (to believe you are healing, even while you are still suffering), and prayer (to God who loves you). God bless all those in withdrawal.

    Those people who have bad hang over... its nothing, its nothing compared to the hell of withdrawal.. you can concentrate, you cant sleep, your temperature goes up and down, its impossible to exercise (which would force endorphines to your brain and make you feel better) since your heart wont let you to exercise since it kind of thinks you are ill and you should rest (and you are kind off ill, its just not bacteria or virus but your brain system, neutrotransmitters and receptors activity in neurons and well there is too much details to tell what happens in micro level in your brain chemistry and changes in neurons). You are shaking, future looks just dark, nothing bad dark, there is no light and you have the feeling there will be no light, only solution is death since you wont get fixed, you wont get better... these are the feelings (Im talking mostly opioids withdrawals here but I guess it is somewhat same as benzos (I have no knowledge of mood drugs withdrawal))... the worst thing is that there is no light, even you know that your brain is totally messed up and it will heal itself after time.. even when you know that you still cant see the light.. yes, just like groundhog day, pain after pain, horror after horror, never ending horror............
    But the truth is (as long as you keep on living healthy life, diet, exercise when you are strong enough) your brain does the fixing, hour by hour, day by day it fixes you back what you used to be.. some miracle moments happen when you see a climpse of light, you get a feeling maybe just of a millisecond what you used to be. Thats when your brain is starting to get things together, like it used to be. There is weird feeling that you start to sense things, feel things when you were a child or what you were before drugs.. you make go back to hell time to time but just let the nrain do its fixing stuff. All the good things, diet, sports, talking to people, sleep (if its finally possible) will make your progress quicker.. THe miracle happens sooner or later and you feel like you are coming home, from year or decades after being lost in the vague fog where you tryied your best to navigate through days.. the fog will go away, and you finally are yourself again, this time you can cry tires of happiness and cry as much as you want since you are never going back to that fog and darkness. those who survive wont ever go back there and the rest of your life your thining is clear, you are out of fog, there is light in your life, of course there are cloudy days but the light, shine and some werid feelings of happiness are part of your life from this moment forward...
    I pray strenght to all of you who are walking in these very dark places and you dont see the light.. believe me there is a light even its million miles away. stay strong, stay weak, get stronger and you will love of being yourself ones again. Good bless you all!

    Thank you for your series. It has been so helpful in my own discontinuance of a benzo. I was only seeing the horror stories and while my heart was so heavy seeing all in absolute crisis, I was afraid there was only going to be the same end for me. But I HAD to stop and regain my life. I have and continue to. I appreciate your compassionate series because there’s always a message of hope in it. And I needed to know there was hope for me, that I could heal eventually. I’m one of the very fortunate that did a quick taper because I was forced to, and am on the other side looking back with amazement and gratitude that I’m still here, a healthier version of myself and most of all, as you point out a lot, PROUD of my choices and my tenacity to stop the cycle of taking a medication(s) I didn’t need and that caused so much more grief and pain than the original symptoms I thought I was using it to stop. I’m not upset with my doctors at all, I truly feel they were trying to help me. After all, no one made me take these medications, I made the appointment to ask for help and they, with their limited understanding of a drug that needs FAR MORE transparency than a information pamphlet neatly folded with my medication, prescribed a little pill taken once daily, would FIX my issues I’d sought out medical attention for. But.... this lack of a thorough knowledge of this dangerous drug, I do feel a prescribing doctor should learn and UNDERSTAND the complications and symptoms of stopping such the medication is paramount. Especially when it’s all there.... in the fine print, what could happen if I stopped abruptly and how it should be discontinued. By the grace of God, somehow, in some way, I made it through those dark days alone in the seconds, minutes, days, weeks, months following my taking of the last pill. Your series has helped me immensely with a positive mindset that the hell I was going through was valid, but the positives would come for me because I didn’t need this medication like I thought and the fight I would embark upon to stop it, stay off it and HEAL my brain and body would be the ultimate test and proof I had, within me, the strength to overcome the very symptoms and complaint I originally sought out a remedy for! Stay well and God Bless! 💜

    Stumbled onto your videos today. I’m struggling. I stopped SSRIs last year at 31 because they don’t work for what they were prescribed for anymore. Was on it for a decade. Severe, dreadful insomnia, breakdowns, strong feeling of disconnection from everything I care about, skin burning, flushing, feeling like there’s no future or it’s all over, paranoia, etc. Just feel like I’m degrading. One of the most telling was this spring-summer (I live in Wisconsin, winters are awful) I always felt a burst of joy when spring-summer came around. It didn’t happen this year. Feels like a lost year almost. I was seeing signs of improvment, but it came back once again yesterday. You seem to be doing well which is good to see (That it’ll go away eventually) I look forward to feeling better.

    This withdrawal has been by far the hardest thing I've ever done. I like these videos though because of the positivity. It is so often hard to feel there is any light at the end of the tunnel, so sometimes I feel it's necessary to have others temporarily provide that light for me. I especially relate to the "Groundhog Day" comments. I have said that exact same line many times. I am in the middle of what feels like tolerance withdrawal right now, it is hell, I don't know how I'm going to get through to the other side without losing my mind; fortunately at least I haven't requested an updose to deal with the tolerance. I need to *believe* I have a chance. What is hardest is feeling like I am putting my family through this with me. They are angels and I know they suffer with me.

    • @TheLovelyGrind

      The withdrawal situation can definitely be traumatic and stressful, and I think that people indeed have to learn how to tend to that "post-trauma" stress even after "acute" is done and they are healing in greater and greater measures. Just keep working to find increased calm and mental/emotional well-being for yourself each day. The symptoms won't last forever, so just keep caring for yourself as they play out to exhaustion. Take care and stay connected here!

They don't signal setbacks, but rather they are a common part of the total process which is headed in an upward direction at all times! And don't worry about the future when it comes to work etc. Just take it one week at a time and keep taking care of yourself. The rest will play out by the hands of God as it is supposed to. Marsha Greene hi Marsha I’ve used over 60 different medications to help with crippling anxiety and depression. The biggest mistake I made was one time I used a opiate pain killer for my arm. Interesting is that it not only helped the pain but it really took care of the anxiety disorder and depression. I can’t warn you enough about the dangerous things that these drugs can do right down to rewriting the brain. Having said that, I didn’t know that this was happening to me but I did it to my self. I’m not in any way telling you what to do but for me drugs are not the answer. I will pray that god blesses you with all your hopes Marsha.

    I went cold turkey off Klonopin (long story how I got to that point, don't ask) and all I can say is it is the mental equivalent of having your limbs blown off in a war. I won't go further past that as I know many people in here struggle with GAD and/or depression and me telling you horror stories will only heap more problems into your mind and that's not my intention. Whatever you do, taper off. It's been about 1 year since that incident (of course I got back on the normal dose in the ER) and I feel almost as normal as I did pre-withdrawal, God be praised.

    Excellent! I truly believe while we're going through this that many of us both see and hear things in the spiritual realm we aren't designed by default to experience. I have experienced a dark force which seems to feed on both pain and suffering. We feed on animals, plants etc..who feeds on us? The movie "They Live", has often said to be more of a documentary than a movie..I couldn't agree more. If there is indeed another species who feeds on both our pain and suffering..wouldn't many of these RX drugs be the perfect choice.. "Think Archons"? First they control you for years on many of these drugs and then they have a feast when one tries to discontinue them. Ever wonder why so many of these drugs are stil legal..I think it has far more to do with "Control", and ofcourse as touched upon above "PAIN", and "Suffering". Throughout this journey I have on more then one occasion been immersed into a HELL like no another. Being burned alive while others seemingly stroll through life "Consuming", "Obeying", and always doing what thier told. At eight months out and in the midst of a vicisous WAVE..I hope I'm becoming enlighted to the TRUTH here never wanting to return after I take my last breath. Yes there is "Benzo W/D" for some of us.. and there's seemingly suffering for years and years on end...seemingly from cradle to grave!

    • @TheLovelyGrind
      @TheLovelyGrind  5 лет назад +3

      The experience can definitely open our eyes and hearts and minds spiritually; and in general it can allow us to be more creative and insightful. We just have to harness such experiences and use them to bring ourselves to a more enlightened and hopeful place. I always say there is such a thing as "useful pain," so use what this process gives you to develop and grow!
