Thank you for sharing your story. I have used Tramadol for over 15 years at a 'self dose' of 12 to 15 50mg tabs daily. I tapered off for months and started withdrawals at 6 per day. Kept cutting until zero, which was 23 days ago, and I feel like I'm in Hell. Sleep is nonexistent and panic attacks, impending doom and feeling like my whole body is flying apart and ready to explode. Sadness, anger and depression are my companions today. I feel hopeless and sad beyond belief and no relief is in sight. I needed to hear your "was it worth it" in the worst way. I needed to know I was not alone or losing my mind and identity. I'm determined to see it through, and your story is an inspiration, so again, thank you.

He had instant release. I have been taking for a while, over a year, and I am not addicted. Mentally or physically. However, as a previous Mental Health Counselor, taking over 10 pills a day is dangerous, you should be in a hospital during the tapering and detox process. Your body is going to be physically addicted as your tolerance is very high. And you are obviously Mentally addicted if you are taking that amount daily. I feel for you. My heart goes out to you. I hope you are OK and doing better.

I did it much the same way as you did, minus the internet searches. I feel that not knowing what to expect might help me miss one or two of the horrors involved in quitting opioids. I shaved a sliver off of each pill, each day until the piece in my hand was too small to cut, then I used a pill cutter. I weaned down in 2 weeks and then suffered as you did for an additional 6 weeks. It's been six years my man. I'm still opioid free and I believe the major difference between myself and so many others who have tried is that I actually WANTED to quit where others had to and that makes all of the difference. For those reading: if you aren't prepared to do this for yourself you won't succeed. The genuine desire to stop using painkillers is an absolute necessity.
Congratulations Kris, and thanks, it's stories like these that remind me of what I went through.

Just that desire (to quit) is the most powerful tool in your belt. People who have to quit usually can't because they're missing that component. Kris has quit for one year and I just ended my 5th year opiate free. You can do it, all it takes to stay off of them is the knowledge that it's what you want it for yourself.
I was most terrified of the pain I would have to live with without the meds, only to find that the 'break through' pain I had been feeling was actually withdrawal pain. I was taking pills every 6 hours but I would start feeling an ache in my muscles after 3½ or 4 hours. It had nothing to do with my injury it was my body screaming for more opiates. Try asking your Doctor for physical therapy, it's not only a good way to learn to build yourself back up but it gives you a place to go to pass time while you're going through the end stages of withdrawal. I didn't realize how antisocial I had become until I started getting back out there opiate free... Don't do it til you're ready, you're on the right path. You're thinking about it and talking about it, next stop is doing something about it and you will.

Not that bad, go for it. Tons and tons of water. 3rd day don't avoid taking a 1mg xanax to make sure you get some sleep. I cheated with xanax two or three times during the process. Also lot of hot showers and exercise. Binge watching some of the best like Breaking Bad will help distract you. However it you don't have a really good reason to get off them, don't. Addict has become a dirty word. You need a better reason than just being an addict. I'm addicted to women, nicotine and sweets. So what.

Hiya Kris, Thank you very much for recounting your experience in a very honest way, that really took courage.
I was prescribed Tramadol after surgery several years ago and that was it, no advice from the hospital on addiction or anything. I discovered that Tramadol should not be taken for more 3 months at a time, and when I asked a Pharmacist about addiction he said that they weren't !!
My Doctors practice changed hands and my doctor was horrified when she saw how long I'd been on them and another drug called Propranolol. So Janet brought me off Propranolol over an 8 week period and I feel so much different: constant tiredness, trouble catching my breath and dry eyes/skin all gone.
Ive been advised to come off Tramadol next because it's causing me so many problems, a lot being digestive. My doctor has given me full support and counselling all the way through and she is continuing to do so. Just to add, I live in Lancashire and my Doctors are NHS foundation trust GPs, but they really care. I'm so happy for you and your family, take care and have a great bug free New Year.

I can relate… the VA had me on 400mg a day for 23 years. They prescribed it when it first came out in 1996… I finally insisted on getting off of it in 2019. While on it I would have fits at night where I couldn’t sleep…super agitated, couldn’t lay down, sit still. My body was convulsing off and on and all I could do was pace around the house until it stopped. I thought I was losing my mind. These episodes were over the last few years I was taking it. I got help through the VA Pain Clinic to slowly cut my dosage down. It was so slow I was cutting pills into ¼’s … The after effects… I am still dealing with things I think are related to the long term use. I don’t want to go into details, but I am seeing my neurologist to go over the latest batch of issues. It seems like a never-ending train of crap. But still better than being drug dependent. The days waiting for my refills were horrible. I never want to go back. Good luck and thank you for your video. I completely agree with you…it was Fucking Hell…

Hi. Thank you so much for doing the video. I am going through that at the moment. I took some tramadol for 2.5 months at 50 to 75mg a day and ran out from the old script. I thought i could just taper off to a quarter the 2 last days without much side effect. But i have been off it 14 days now. The anxiety is terrible. I have fear coming for nowhere with formication on my chest and arm. I am on Lexapro as well. So the depression is not bad. It is the adrenaline surge at night and panic attack . I didn’t have any sleep last nights. I hope the withdrawal won't last too long.

Thankyou! I have been on Tramadol for 10 years off and on prescribed heavily 8 x 50mg a day for pains due to Ehlers Danlos and migraines. It was a one stop cure all which I would sometimes take when I needed the energy to finish a project . Over Christmas I was given a smaller prescription which I believe may have been stolen. I went straight from 8 a day to 2 a day with no help. It’s 3 weeks in and I still have physical symptoms. Thanks for confirming this is normal. I didn’t have trainspotting level madness yet but I cant do much outside my 8 hour window of work. I am probably operating on 20 less IQ points than normal too so I’m concerned my creative work will be embarrassing. I will stay on 2 a day but do the final taper slowly.i have not had anxiety or depression but have no previous mental health issues so hoping my neurotransmitters form an orderly queue. Thanks again for your thorough video. It’s the most accurate one I’ve seen

I hated how I felt on it so I was motivated to quit but I had not a clue as to what I would go through- hell. My experience was a bit different but not much. Never Tramadol again. Kris I am just now watching your video and I just want to say thank you. I have been in between 150-200 mg a day for over 10 years due to rheumatoid arthritis and issues with my joints associated with it. I am an otherwise healthy and active 50 year old women. Last year around this time I had an acute episode of diverticulitis and had to have 8 inches of my colon removed. I am convinced it is from being on this drug for so many years. I also am tired of feeling exactly like you said- like dog crap around hour 4 when it starts to wear off. I noticed that I have to take them after about 4-5 hours even if I have no pain, just to get through the day. Anyways I decided to get myself off of this horrible medicine and I am on day 15 now. It has been rough. I was experiencing something called brain zaps for the first 10-12 days where I would actually hear zapping in my head and then feel light headed. This medicine is awful and I never want to take it again. Thanks for your encouragement I trust God will help me one day at a time. 🙏🏻

My family doctor put me on this shit after I told him I wasn’t taking oxy any more and quitting oxy cold turkey was easier than getting off this stuff. Getting off this was without a doubt the “ MOST DIFFICULT THING I’VE EVER DONE IN MY LIFE”
Do yourself a favour and ask your physician if there is an alternative to this terrible medication, and if not take the lowest therapeutic dose for the shortest period of time.
After being on Tramadol for 5 years when I spoke to my physician about this and told him I thought I was addicted to it and his response was” not addicted just dependant” and I found that if I was having a low pain day and forgot to take the dinner dose by 8:00 PM I was climbing the walls due to the start of withdrawal and the 6 weeks it took to taper off were the worst 6 weeks of my life.

Honestly I believe the US Government should force terrorists to take tramadol for 6 months and then use it as a torture device, make them cut down from like 300 mg a day to 50 mg a day, for a couple weeks, then back up to 200 mg a day for a week then cold turkey. That would be one hell of a torture program, I believe it would be more effective then waterboarding. Sad thing is, our Doctors are doing this to the public, torturing our citizens on a whim, leaving them out in the cold to suffer, suicide or go to heroin. Its a damn Shame Doctors are torturing citizens just for having had pain.

Tramadol was introduced to me as a far less addictive alternative to the oxycodone I was taking. I've never felt any opiate effects from tramadol so this news of withdrawal is surprising to me. Honestly, I have always thought of it as a prescription strength ibuprofen, and that is how it feels to take it which is nothing like the narcotics I took for many years so I didn't anticipate any of these issues.

    • @davidwolstenholme6413

Tramadol is nothing like Ibuprofen, it has the same addictive qualities that oxytocin has because they are both opioids. Take it from an old heroin addict with thirty years experience behind him, Tramadol ARE opioids and they are just as addictive as heroin, only heroin is more concentrated. I can only think you haven't done a handful of them at the same time, if you did you'd soon be getting a fine hit.

    • @edjones7145
      @edjones7145 2 года назад

Yeah my doctor told me it was like a stronger Tylenol or Advil. That it was non addictive. That was bullshit. The SSRI part is the part that fucked me over. I didn’t know it had that. I tried SSRIs before and had issues. The opioid part was easy for me because it doesn’t get me high like most people. I got brain zaps like mild electrical shocks when I tried going cold turkey. I had to slowly wean off over two months.

I understand your journey have been on this medication since 1998 is it better than Oxycontin or real opioid use for me yes. I take the max dose and I do try to cut back it really only takes the edge off of my pain but I'm not willing to change to something stronger and more addictive. Bad enough I'm on this. Pain is one of those things you really can't explain to someone that doesn't deal with it daily. Good luck with your issues I'll be on this till death but I'm ok with that.

I'm 34 days into tapering from 200mg a day to 10mg a day. I was on tramadol for 3 years. I have muscle pain every day, especially in my legs and back. I thought that this dose is pretty low, but my body has developed a serious addiction. I hope that my pain will go away. I had 3 days with almost no pain, but then it started again. I have noticed that vegan food makes me feel better, and also if I avoid spicy food.

I didn't want to be a slave to the pill.. Then last year I had been slowly weening myself off I was down to only two pills a day. And finally I stopped. But. When I watched this. You actually did it the right way man, congrats ! One medication that can help stop cravings, is baclofen or you can try vivitrol to block your opioid receptors, that would make sure you will not slip up or take Tramadol again, if your on vivitrol then the tramadol would not work, be totally blocked.

Tramadol can absolutely be just as addictive as any other opioid. It has a reputation of being mild, but that's not the case for many people. It's one of those drugs that has a much stronger effect in some people than others, I believe because it's a "prodrug" meaning your body has to break it down into its active form, and some people have more of the enzyme(s) required to do so than others. It's my understanding this is why the effects can vary so much from person to person. For me, it was quite effective and yes induced full blown unbearable withdrawals. I used to take like 12-15 50mg tabs a day

  • @AnnieALaney

People seem to have varied experiences with Tramadol. I have had it prescribed for severe arthritis pain for the past five or six years. The pain relief is a game-changer in terms of getting around and having a life and being able to sleep at night. No side effects aside from some mild nausea and constipation, easily dealt with. The prescription is for 50 mg up to 4X a day, but I only take three pills on most days. One at night to get to sleep, another when I wake up with pain in the wee hours of the morning, a third to get me going in the morning. Once the day is under way, I don't need it again until bedtime. I know that I'm dependent on it, and withdrawal signs set in, including depression, if I don't have it for a day or two. On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be any down side to taking it as long as I take it. My sister has had pretty much the same experience with it, so maybe it's a genetic thing.
