The Samsung Gear Sport is aimed at the fitness user with the device packed with features to help improve your daily workout. Whilst its made for Samsung devices and Android, the Gear Sport is also compatible with iPhones and is supposed to play pretty well
The Gear Sport was announced at the IFA technology show in Berlin with Samsung boasting that it is “designed to help consumers of varying fitness levels meet their goals and aspirations.” Whilst plenty of people were expecting Samsung to unveil the Gear S4 at the IFA in September they shocked everyone with the Gear Fit2 Pro and the Gear Sport.

Samsung Gear Sport iPhone setup
You have the ability to use the Samsung Gear Sport with an Android phone or an iPhone and because my primary phone is an iPhone 7 Plus i decided to see how easy it was to setup the Gear Sport with an iPhone.
First of all you need to download the Gear S app from the Apple App Store, turn on the Gear Sport and follow the instructions, its that easy. I was so surprised how easy it was to setup up the Gear Sport with an iPhone. When I am building the review, I will use an iPhone and a Samsung Galaxy S7 to compare.
Samsung Gear Sport design
The Samsung Gear Sport is available in Black or Blue colours and I went with the Blue version for this review as I like the colour blue and I wanted something different compared to the black or grey sports watches that are available at the moment.
The Gear Sport is made is of aluminium and is 45mm in size weighing in at 50g, which on first touch feels premium and has weight to it, which I like in a watch. The Gear Sport also features a changeable silicon bands that are 20mm in size which use quick release. My first try of changing the band was a-bit fiddly and not as smooth as an Apple Watch or Garmin’s QuickFit on the Fenix 5 series and I think this is down to the clasp being flush with the band as show in this picture.

Hi, nice review, thanks. I am curious, whether there is an app for the phone (Samsung in my case), which allow to set up interval training and upload it to the watch. Garmin excells from my understanding in this. My target is to get ready for next year marathon and I am afraid if Garmin (Forerunner 935/Fenix 5) isn't too complex for my needs. I hesitate a lot between ease of control, display, offline music (Gear sport) compared to training programs/coaching/post training analysis (Forerunner 935). All I want as for sport is to get my marathon time improvement, outdoor running. And not to overdo it with training.
How could I download this watch face?
Hi John. Good review. I agree the screen looks top class. I’m an iPhone user so it was good to see the setup, but I’m interested in understanding what limitations there might be when really tracking activities and loading extra apps. I want to do running, cycling, and I know they come standard. I also want to use it for skiing and golf and I’ve no idea if it will support those activities. It seems like unless you actually have this device you can’t find out what apps and other activities are available through the App Store, or if being an iPhone user limits the available apps too.

Hi John, could you please review pool swimming using the SpeedoOn app? I know that the Samsung app is very basic and for my needs it wouldn't cut it. Thanks so much.

Apparently it automatically connects to a Bluetooth HR strap & doesn't tell you - great if you can confirm or deny this

If you set a training plan (on phone) are the scheduled workouts available on the watch, with audio coaching for pace etc?

Hi John, good review. I️ am an iPhone user but really like this watch and want to know specifically what limitations I’d have. I’m not too into the apps and calling from the watch but more on the fitness side and Spotify setting. Do you happen to know when one could expect to have an full review uploaded?
Hi Tori. I am in the middle of completing the edit now and it should be out before the weekend. Spotify works ok, but any third party fitness apps that require a companion app won’t work for an iPhone user. So for example, speedo swimming app won’t sync

I bought the S2 Sport 3G (for the speaker) but every time I post Bluetooth connection (left phone in a different room or office) it took doing a reset to make the Bluetooth connect again to get any notifications. It showed Bluetooth on but the phone couldn’t find it again. Did you have that problem with the iPhone connection?
not had any bluetooth disconnection issues so far

Hi John. Thanks for the review. Beyond the native 10 some odd sport profiles, can you add any other sports profiles? Which ones? I’m guessing you can’t pair this with an external heart rate monitor like the Scosche Rhythm armband, correct?
Hi John, I have not been able to add other sport profiles when looking on the Gear Sport, but I am going to have a good look on the App today. I know you can pair bluetooth earphones, but not found an option for a chest strap other sensors yet

The VA3 is a good watch, but I am genuinely surprised with the Samsung Gear Sport and I am really looking forwarding to testing out the fitness features

Hello John, I'm thinking of returning my Vivoactive 3. I'm an iphone user should I be considering this? I usually workout at gym and sometimes go running and cycling outdoors. I'm getting 4 day of battery life on VA3 which is the same as Gear Sport apparently. I have seen power off mode and watch only mode gives up to 22 days. Is the watch comparable and better value?
+RedNine based on my testing so far the Vivoactive 3 is ahead on the tests. The gear sport is better for screen and apps. But it sport is the reason for purchase then stick with the Vivosport as I have found some big misses with the sport

+killahzgz I would honestly suggest the Suunto Spartan sport based on what you have said. Also if you want it for swimming and want to set pool lengths then the Samsung Gear sport can’t do that

Hi, could you do more of a review on iPhone integration as I couldn’t get some of the key features to work such as adding a tennis workout and also found that the advertised speedo and MyFitnessPal apps weren’t available when paired with an iPhone in the uk. Really liked the watch though as it had a great UI and battery life, just too limited when paired with an iPhone.
+Steven Lucas I have found the speedo app and MyFitnessPal don’t work. I have reached out to both companies and they confirm it will only work with android.

This is very open question and I always answer it with the same response. It all depends what you need it for and what you want todo with post workout data. You need to decide what activities you are going to be using it for? Each user is different
Fenix 5 dominates sports and battery life. Apple rules the app world. I think the Gear 3's look great and are the best smartwatches for Samsung phones and the Samsung Health ecosystem. Android Wear, too convoluted imo.
I have a Samsung gear s and it is amazing , I also have a sim card on it and can travel light without my phone
Pls tell is there any strength training third party app available as default in VA3 and also compare hr accuracy in comparison.... As im a gym rat

I just got this watch and really enjoy it. Currently using it with an LG G6 and really missing the iOS experience and debating on trading the G6 in for an iPhone 8 Plus. Curious as to what limitations it has with iOS and your experience.
+Michael Lee lots of the apps won’t sync. So for instance the Speedo On app, MyFitnessPal don’t work if you have don’t have an android device for syncing to the apps servers

+Michael Lee yes it does as I have been wanting to test both apps and didn’t bring the Samsung S7 I have for testing. It’s a real shame that you can’t get the full experience with iOS
True. I'm debating on returning the watch and just wear my real watch and getting a Fitbit or something. Haha.
+Michael Lee it all depends on your needs. My advice to anyone would be. Decide how much you want in smart features. Then you need to decide what sports you are going to be taking part in.

I'm a hugely loyal Samsung fan when it comes to phones, tv's, fridges rec. I like the look of the screen but overall this looks too bulky for someone with small wrists. I'm not a fan of the bezzle or the buttons.
I'd love to hear not about battery life and what sort of apps are available in addition to standard fitness tracking.
Please Samsung bring out a smaller smart watch next year!
Hi Mel. The size is not much bigger than the VA3 and side by side is not that bulky tbh. The Bezel is really good, if you can try one then try it out. I will report back on the rest as I use it
