Great intro video mate, have been looking forward for a true review & if it really will hold up as a sports watch. Great video. I love that you have that perfect level of relaxed, but still informative, and not too formal attitude. I never watched a complete unboxing video, always skipping to the parts that I'm interested in, but with yours, you make it really enjoyable without trying.

Looking forward to seeing a Garmin VA3 vs Samsung Gear Sport comparison. I'm currently using a Pebble 2 with HR to do basic work out tracking, but for me the combination of notifications (ability to do STT replies in addition to canned responses) and the 7 day battery life is amazing. I gave a Samsung S2 a test drive and was underwhelmed by how it handles notifications (they're gone for good once dismissed) and under 2 day battery life. Seems like finding a real Pebble replacement (outside of the Ionic) is going to be difficult - was really hoping the VA3 would do it for me.

I've found HR not to be good as the Suunto spartan trainer I tested out. I've also found that stair counting can be accurate but you have to start your hand Low when stating and high top of the stairs, got the tip from a VA3 user. The S3 model also has a mode on hr for breathing to relax, but for some reason not on the Sport yet. It also looks like the Under Armour suite of apps are not working with the Sport yet partially due to running Tizen OS version 3. Support forum says Samsung is working on it. GPS I've found to be hair more accurate than Suunto and Garmin in the sense it's not showing me crossing the street when I didn't. Be curious to see what your results are. Also, on the plus side step tracking is more accurate than Suunto as it doesn't go by wrist movement.
Edit: I'd suggest watching a Gear S3 video just a refresher on to use all the features on the watch. Worked solid as they are similar watches ui wise.

the gear sport is definitely on my radar but im uncertain how i would like tizen os. those multiple apps kind of bother me too. ugh im so torn between this and garmin vivoactive 3
+lifemusicelovee the Tizen OS is pretty darn amazing. More complex than Garmin’s OS but it is a pleasure to use. Will be doing the thing I do with these so stay tuned!

Quick question, before buying one, how can I find out what sports and activities the Gear Sport tracks. Apart from the normal running, cycling, hiking, I want to be able to track my skiing and golfing. Does this watch support those activities?

Instead of using the widget to look at activities/to start a workout open the app instead. From there you'll probably get a lot more options.

I’ve tried a Gear S2 classic with an Iphone 7 plus and a S7 edge and the process of setting up the watch was way better with the samsung phone! Same thing with general usage. It’s clunky on an iPhone because of apple’s apps restrictions.

How's the connection between Bluetooth headsets and the watch when using GPS? For some reason when I use my 935 and it's connected to my phone while using BT headphones and using GPS the connection is horrible but as soon as I stop the GPS the connection is fine. I would really like this watch for the offline spotify music so I don't have to take my phone with me. I also have to say I look forward to all your videos so far the best reviewer I've watched 👍.

This is so different from apple watch unboxing and i can understand that as it has been the same for me in the past with phones. Samsung's build and package is so good but opening an apple product it's a completely different story. Can't wait to see what do you think about this watch and maybe in the future a huge comparison between Gear Sport, VivoActive 3 and Apple watch. Thanks for your vids!

I own a gear 2 overall I like the watch but it lacks some 3rd party app support (strava for one). But that might be because of the tizen os on the watch. But it has a great build quality and like it overall. So I am guessing the gear sport will fall in this same quality.

I have my Vivoactive 3 currently and love it, however depending how Samsung does in the future this gear sport could be a changer, still new on the market however
+Connor Williams if it can do activity tracking remotely close to the VA3, this really could be a serious contender. Usability is probably the best of any watch I have ever tried.
Love your reviews!! I have the gear sport now and like the usability but am a little disappointed with the GPS tracking. Des, I am looking forward to your review of this compared to the Vicoactive 3. I had the Vicoactive 3 for about 4 hours and it locked up on me. But looking to try it out again.

LOL, yes I asked the Techy Agent as well!!! I am itching to buy a new device but i'm torn between the two... I've had the Fenix 3, the Polar M600 and the fitbit blaze amongst other fitbits but now I just want to settle on a robust device which has accurate fitness tracking and good functionality. I'm not interested in fitbits anymore because although the health tracking is brilliant, the devices themselves do not stand the test of time... My blaze does not keeps its charge as long as it used to, the surge gave me a skin rash and the charge's band just broke on me.

If you have a Samsung device and you log into one Samsung app, it will automatically log you in to other Samsung apps requiring an account. I think theirs better integration with Android devices

Whats your recommendation for a sport focused smartwatch? The Gear Sport or the Apple Watch? I have an iPhone 6S Plus - I really really really really want the Spotify functionality so I don't have to take my phone with me to have music. Thank you!
Wow that’s tough since you want Spotify! If can live without texts, calls and Siri, then the Gear Sport will be good. Those 3 reasons outweigh Spotify for me, personally, but I really like Spotify too!

How blue is the blue? I have received mine but even though the straps are blue the watch itself seems very dark and I would say black. Been watching the video but hard to tell.

Hi Des, since my main sport is swimming Im eager to know if you would also review the swimming functionality of this watch? For me this is a make or break. I know its supposed to give advanced metrics via the SpeedoOn app however the corresponding app on the PlayStore has a very low adaption and score...Im considering between this watch to the VA3 and if swimming support is decent I will go for Samsung's. Thanks

+Vangelis Gkionakis Thanks! Unfortunately, it does not, but the HR sensor is quite good! Hopefully 3rd party sensor support can be added with updates.
Some people claim that it automatically connects to a Bluetooth HR strap & doesn't notify you...Can you please check if this is the case; Thanks for your reply!

Watching this makes me think that the VA3 must be quite underwhelming, the touch screen and general user interface on the VA3 seems rather finicky compared to this and the apple watch 3. Got a Samsung atm, so no apple watch for me.
+Janus Hannesarson after using an Apple Watch and this Gear Sport, it is. Great fitness functions on the VA3 but the experience is just so much nicer on he other 2.
Nice video Des. I’ll be interested in seeing what types of activity profiles you can add to the Watch. I feel that the Samsung watches are dialed down if you don’t have a Samsung, even if you have android. BTW, what is your daily driver? The AW3 or did you go back to your X? I am super frustrated with the VA3 software. It seems like it has a new bug each day. I like wearing it but Garmin cannot figure out a proper way to show notifications.
+John Manley After using a lot of other devices, I feel Garmin missed a big opportunity with the VA3 (and the 5-series too, really) and they will need to bring out something really stellar to make up for it. if Apple or Samsung ups their game just slightly, they can really give Garmin a run for their money. It really won’t take that much. Just some software improvements for the Apple and the same for Samsung along with possibly some better tracking (more based on other reviews, haven’t had enough time with the Gear Sport yet to make my decision.) But the GS is really not that bad with an iPhone, I quite like it. Daily driver? Wait for the final AW episode ;)
DesFit I keep getting a pop up notification for the music player. Finally figured out how to disable it. I hate that you have to double tap the screen to advance to the next exercise in strength profile. I have to repeat it multiple times just to get it to work. The interface continues to be buggy. I can dismiss texts after the new software update, but it does not get actually dismissed on the Watch. It just stays there. Fitbit and Garmin also can’t seem to figure out notifications. It’s just not their thing. Stay tuned for the final Apple episode, huh? I will do that!
+John Manley I don’t think Garmin has been gaining many fans this year with their firmware history with both the VA3 as well as fenix although each release seems to make things slightly better. I’m really hoping whatever they come out with next will be more reliable. Notifications aren’t perfect on the Gear Sport either but to be expected using a Samsung device with an iPhone.
DesFit I would buy an iPhone and get the apple watch rather than get the Samsung. I'm just not a fan of their interface.

If it is not difucalt please help me withmy question because its an excelent smarwatch 👍and it doesnt deserve this little problem...🙂

Your finger is on the heartrate sensor so it travked your heartrate becouse of that. When you dont have nothing on the heartrate sensor it does not work

Didn't try that but most likely not since this is Tizen OS on the watch and not Android Wear.

Can you see if there is a third party app that offers bread-crumbing, because I don't think smartwatches from Apple, Google, and Samsung, offer that feature.
The watch is too nice looking to wear at the gym or in the pool, I may have to stick to my old sports watch.

If you are using a Samsung phone is easier to setup. You don't have to login multiple times
