The first individual outside the band to hear the song was sixteen-year-old Kenny Sykaluk of Rocky River, Ohio, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. His mother wrote a letter to the band telling them about her son's terminal condition, and how big a fan he was of Journey. The band flew to his hospital bedside in Cleveland, Ohio at the request of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Along with a Walkman containing the new track, the band also brought Kenny a football helmet signed by the San Francisco 49ers and an autographed Journey platinum record award. The experience of playing the song for Kenny left Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain deeply affected. Perry said, "As soon as I walked out of the hospital room, I lost it. Nurses had to take me to a room by myself." On the band's episode of VH1's Behind the Music, Cain broke down in tears recalling the event, remarking that "children should not have to live with that kind of pain". Kenny died the next day, with the Walkman still in his hand. The song brought life into perspective for the band and left them humbled. Neal Schon said that Kenny's death affected Journey by making them re-evaluate the issues that were causing friction inside the band itself. In honor of Kenny Sykaluk, the band used the song as their opener for the Raised on Radio Tour.[3]

The story behind this song is heartbreaking. It was originally going to be released on the album, Frontiers. They recorded the song, and took it to a hospital to visit a fan; a little kid whose mother reached out. That kid was the first to hear this song, and he loved it. The kid would eventually die, hand still holding the cassette.
The band was very affected by this, deciding against releasing the song on the album. The song was first released by Patty Smythe on the album, The Warrior. Her cover was the first version released. Once the film Vision Quest was made, Journey's version was in the film and on the soundtrack. The sound has a number of memorable songs.

I married into a family in the record industry in the Eighties, so I have been truly privileged to meet a ton of musicians and celebrities. During one memorable evening I got to hang with Randy Jackson, at the time he was big on American Idol and he was cool that I wanted to discuss his playing with Journey rather than the show. I have to say that he was one of the most generous and sharing celebrities ever. We were in public and he never once hesitated to recognize and take time with every single person he met, and never rushed them taking pictures or answering questions. I complimented him on the fact and he noted that he was once on the other side looking at his idols and always wanted to act like he would have wanted them to act towards him. Totally class act, and a pretty decent bass player. ✌️

A couple of an interesting things about this song. It was on the soundtrack to the movie "Vision Quest" about a high school wrestler training to take on the state champion. The movie is very inspirational with a stellar soundtrack. Also, somebody mentioned it below, Journey was working on this album when they heard a boy was very sick in the hospital who was a big Journey fan. The band visited the boy and gave him the first cassette copy among other things. The band members had been going through some friction and this put things into perspective. The band members were sobbing as they left the hospital room. The boy passed away the next day with the Walkman and cassette tape in his hands.

"Only the Young" is a song written by Jonathan Cain, Steve Perry, and Neal Schon of the band Journey. It was featured on the soundtrack to the 1985 film Vision Quest. The song was originally recorded by Scandal, who released it in 1984 on their Warrior album.
Journey released their version on January 8, 1985 and later that year it reached #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also reached #3 on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song's lyrical theme focuses on young people and the hope and future they all have in front of them.

I originally copied a cassette tape of Journey’s Greatest Hits from the local library, then bought the cassette for my first car. Then, while in the Marines, it was the first CD I ever bought. I made sure to buy another copy after my cd collection was stolen. And finally, I keep it downloaded on my iPhone for times I can’t get a good signal.

Class of 87!!! This song embodies the 80s! The recklessness, the parties, first loves, high school graduation, the sad goodbyes. Some of us went straight to college, others left to defend our country and many sacrificed their lives in Desert Storm. This song is a time machine.

Being in elementary, middle, and high school during the 80s was very AMAZING, and it was tough to decide what style, and music that went with the style, we would be. Lots of us went back and forth between Heavy Metal, R&B or pop, New Wave, etc.

Hello from a September 1973-born Generation X'er from northeast Ohio. I am a life-long Journey fan. Some might tell you the heartbreaking story behind this song, but I want to mention something else about this song that you likely will not get anyone else to mention; their Frontiers album (which "Seperate Ways" comes from) came out in 1983, and this song "Only The young" was recorded to be on that album. Somehow, the song ended up being left off the Frontiers album. But then, Journey caught a lucky break when the song was selected to be on the soundtrack to the 1985 movie "Vision Quest". So, if not for being on that soundtrack, the song might never have seen the light of day. It's always been one of my favorites. And by the way, you would do well to watch the movie, and maybe even upload your reaction to your movie channel. Cheers from northeast Ohio!

Fun fact: This song was intended for their Frontiers album but got axed. They then sold the song to the band Scandal. Scandal's version is the first commercially released in 1984 on their Warrior album, Journey released theirs the following year for the Visionquest movie soundtrack. Patty Smyth/Scandal's version is good, too.

Knuckle Moonpup here! This is my favorite Journey song and one that has only ever been played live once. They just finished the album and were about to go on tour and a 12 year old boy wanted to see his favorite band, Journey, but he was too weak to go to a concert. Journey heard about him and gave him his own concert. They said they would never play this song in concert again because it was for the young dying boy. I fight back tears everytime I hear it!
