Paul Kossoff (guitarist) was 18, Paul Rodgers (singer) and Simone Kirke (drummer) were 19. Also, Paul Rodgers is one of the best voices in rock history.
Paul visited the hospital in Iraq before one of his shows for the troops. I know our patients really enjoyed seeing a big star like him, just chatting, and being there. His gesture had a huge impact on our patients & us too. Really nice. Thank you Paul.

Paul Kossoff's phrasing and feel are still amazing 55 years on. Still one of the very best, still and always will be. "Fire and Water, Wishing Well, Mr Big and so on, all pearls.
I saw Paul Rodgers when he was fronting Queen. It is worth the listen as Freddie was once asked who could replace you in Queen and he said Paul Rodgers.
I saw him there too and I was conflicted. Generally I liked and I liked the combination, but they were right not to call him a replacement for Freddy. Rodgers doesn't have (or need!) the operatic clean voices and the reach of Freddy. His best moments were when they did a few Free and Bad Company songs. However much I enjoyed Queen and Paul Rodgers, I think Adam Lambert is a better fit for Queen. Which is saying nothing about Rodgers' quality. Just about the combination.
I saw Paul with Queen, and loved and hated it at the same time. Paul is one of my favourite singers, and Queen my favourite band, but the combination was weird. Queen's music is theatrical, Pauls was the blues. Technically it was done very well, and I enjoyed it, but the styles didn't mix great I thought.
Paul was huge Otis Redding fan. So, masterful influence married with ginormous personal talent and giftedness, equals The Voice. Rock steady Paul Rodgers
About 5 years ago I saw Paul Rodgers in concert. He is always great but what struck me about his performance was how relaxed he was and his effortless delivery.
The bass part on the instrumental is very effective and sounds simple but to play it correctly and consistently is challenging. Gave me rsi in plucking hand !!! Good job
The Hall has shown very little interest in actually inducting the greatest rock musicians. Paul Rodgers is often considered the top rock vocalist, and Keith Emerson was of similar importance as a keyboard player. Wouldn't you want to recognize the people who were the best at creating the music?
Sooooo stoked for this, Paul kossoff for me is the greatest British blues guitarist ever, Andy Fraiser was 15 when he joined the band. Which is insane. And they truly are a massively overlooked gem in the history of British music
I quite agree, so many great guitarists from this period seem to be forgotten, but Kossof's low key playing, the pauses, the vibrato, wow. Shout out to T S McPhee, Mick Abrams and Stan Webb as well.
The thing about Paul Rodgers was that he was a natural. Never took a lesson. In fact there's a story that cracks me up about how he was the bass player in the band he was in when he was a teenager, and one practice he stepped up to the mic for the first time and sang a phrase, and after a silence fell in the room, the guitarist/singer was like "okay then, you're now the singer"..lol. I can just imagine when a future legendary voice like that first falls on people's ears.
Your vocal analysis videos have made my singing better. I've been singing a long time, but I never knew the real mechanics of what I was doing, and still don't fully, I just knew I needed to make my voice perform a certain way to make a particular sound. Having even that little bit of insight that I've gleaned from your videos has made me cognizant of what I'm doing and why. All that to say, thank you. I really enjoy these!

At one of my High School dances, back in the day, it featured a local Bay Area band and Paul Kossoff showed up to play with them as he was friends with the band members. I was blown away. It was a great time to be growing up and a location for music.
I have watched thousands of music videos and this has to be one of the finest live performances by any band ever. Every one of these guys were outstanding musicians and this was such a great song.
Oh man. This is such a great freaking song 10 out of 10. OK so they were still playing this song in clubs in the 80s. I will tell you specifically 1985 because I was 16 and was having the best night of my life. I met a guy. We danced for a couple of hours. He did not take me home to his place but he did take me to a hill about half a mile from the club. And we watched a meteor shower for two hours. Don’t even remember his name never saw him again. It’s just a wonderful memory and that song brings it all back every time

Elizabeth, Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington's main influence when he was a kid was Free guitarist Paul Kossof. To the extent that everyone acknowledged that nobody else integrated Kossof's style into a new, signature, unique hybrid style like Rossington did. I know you're more into the vocal side of things but, well, for what it's worth...and as noted by others, you haven't truly experienced Free till you hear Fire and Water.
Palm muting the strings gives this "instant dampening" effect. It can be also be employed by the fretting hand, just by lifting just enough to stop the vibration of the strings. Not enough to get a harmonic, but a deadening effect. Paul Kossoff ..mad respect as a rock guitarist

I went to watch and listen to an all night concert at the London Colosseum in 1968 and the warm up band was Free. Paul Rogers was magnificent, and especially Paul Kossof's vibrato on the Les Paul Gibson guitar blew me away. The band performed all original numbers, and nothing was faster than a walking speed. Free have been one of my favourite bands this last almost sixty years, and Paul Kossof is a legend. In the seventies, all the great rock and roll bands around the world from the Beatles to the Stones and every band in between took a poll to see who they thought was the greatest rock singer, and it turned out that Paul Rogers was every bands favourite singer.

Guitarist Paul Kossoff was one of the best players in the world. He was once asked by Eric Clapton how he created his guitar vibrato, Paul didn’t answer and thought that Eric Clapton (is God) was trying to belittle him. Sadly Paul was taken from use by drug addiction and we all wonder what would have been. However Paul Rodgers’ voice has mellowed and got better and better over his career. One last fact in the video the bass play Andy Fraser was only 15/16 at the time of this TV show recording. I’m 68 and they are the soundtrack to my teenage years.
Oh I Wept by Free is a song definitely worth listening to. It highlights Paul Rodger’s dynamic range in his voice. Although everything by him is just incredible!
I count myself lucky to see them in Sydney on the same bill with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Deep Purple, brilliant is the only way to describe it. I was less than 20mtrs from the stage and 18, a few months later was Status Quo and Slade. Give Noddy a listen.
Looks like he's accepted those prayers, this is from last year "Asked if he is healthy now, Paul told KSHE 95: "Yeah, thank you. Thank God, really. But I do thank hyperbaric [oxygen therapy] as well, which is the treatment you can get. You just sit in there, oxygen under pressure. The only thing you feel is a little bit in your ears; it's like flying on a little puddle jumper airplane. But that's all. And then you just watch a movie for an hour and you're done. You breathe in and [the oxygen] recirculates through your brain and it's very good. It took a year and a half to get my voice back after all that stroke."
Simon Kirke, one of the greats. I love the recording on this as well, only 6 mics onstage (including the 2 on the vocals) and it sounds enormous. As for Simon Kirke, His daughters are actresses- Jemimah was in “Girls” and Lola was in “Mozart and the Jungle.”
Supposedly the death of Hendrix was one of the things he could never fully deal with because he was Kossoff's idol and contributed to his addiction and ultimately his death.
My all time favorite vocalist since I first heard him in 1970. In my opinion, his best vocal performance is in "Laying Down the Law" from the album The Law (1991)
Seagull and Silver, Blue and Gold from Bad Company are his best! Soft and beautiful songs. If you like Paul's early stop/vocal cutoff in this song, in Silver Blue and Gold's chorus' eponymous line, the "Blue" is this cutoff that eluded my terrible but joyous attempts to sing along.
Paul Rodgers is the best! He still is performing like this to this very day, well maybe not so much hip swag. No one sounds like this or ever will! Truly one of a kind.
Having seen Bad Company somewhat recently, I will say Paul’s voice has held up better than most in old age. If anybody is a fan, and Bad Company is on tour near you, go see them before you can’t.
True story, friend of mines grandmother was a bit of a "wise woman" reading tea leaves etc. she lived in Stockton when Paul was young and he went to her for advice. She read his tea leaves and said he needed to quit his job and go to London if he wanted to be a success. He did and within a year he'd formed a band and was getting noticed. He wrote a letter to her thanking her for her advice.
Knowing a bit about him it would not surprise me if he was being very calculated back then …he is known as a dude that pampers his voice and takes his craft seriously…to the point there are haters ….always are I guess …anyhow you rock lady …I get as much enjoyment by seeing how passionate you are as I do from the performances themselves…all the best and keep it up !!!
The Navy ship I was on had a double helicopter pad. 4 outdoor speakers and amps to give orders to the flight crews. They would play music on slow weekends at sea. I always ilked this one. Your reactions are always informational.

60/70s UK was such a great time for amazing voices. Absolutely love Paul Rodgers! Smooth and crispy at the same time is absolutely apt. Now I‘m just waiting for some Humble Pie and Steve Marriott. Their cover of For Your Love haunts me since I first heard it.

My band was playing a restaurant gig in Perth, Western Australia, and an older and very well spoken lady with a hint of an English accent came up after our set and shared her appreciation for our band, and said how it reminded her of the spirit of her brother's band back in the 70s....it turns out she was Paul Kossoff's sister (step sister). One of those moments.

Paul Rodgers is one of my all-time favorite singers. When first heard him speak with a heavy British accent it blew me away.
The texture of Rodgers voice blends so perfectly with the sparse instrumentation in Free as well as Bad Co.
The verses in this live performance are mostly just him, the guitar, and the drummer. Very sparse, but it works together wondefully.
My favourite group of the early 70's when I was 15. A fantastic time for music and Free were up there with the best!

He was once asked by Eric Clapton how he created his guitar vibrato, Paul didn’t answer and thought that Eric Clapton (is God) was trying to belittle him. Sadly Paul was taken from use by drug addiction and we all wonder what would have been. However Paul Rodgers’ voice has mellowed and got better and better over his career. One last fact in the video the bass play Andy Fraser was only 15/16 at the time of this TV show recording. I’m 68 and they are the soundtrack to my teenage years.

Oh I Wept by Free is a song definitely worth listening to. It highlights Paul Rodger’s dynamic range in his voice. Although everything by him is just incredible!

I count myself lucky to see them in Sydney on the same bill with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Deep Purple, brilliant is the only way to describe it. I was less than 20mtrs from the stage and 18, a few months later was Status Quo and Slade. Give Noddy a listen.

I hope this is true in current day. He's had multiple strokes in his life.

Simon Kirke, one of the greats. I love the recording on this as well, only 6 mics onstage (including the 2 on the vocals) and it sounds enormous.
As for Simon Kirke, His daughters are actresses- Jemimah was in “Girls” and Lola was in “Mozart and the Jungle.”
Look at his minimal drum kit but listen to how massive it sounds.

Paul Kossoff died younger than Hendrix and is one of the underrated guitarists of all time
Supposedly the death of Hendrix was one of the things he could never fully deal with because he was Kossoff's idol and contributed to his addiction and ultimately his death.

My all time favorite vocalist since I first heard him in 1970. In my opinion, his best vocal performance is in "Laying Down the Law" from the album The Law (1991)
Seagull and Silver, Blue and Gold from Bad Company are his best! Soft and beautiful songs. If you like Paul's early stop/vocal cutoff in this song, in Silver Blue and Gold's chorus' eponymous line, the "Blue" is this cutoff that eluded my terrible but joyous attempts to sing along.
Those two songs are sublime and my favorites!!

Having seen Bad Company somewhat recently, I will say Paul’s voice has held up better than most in old age. If anybody is a fan, and Bad Company is on tour near you, go see them before you can’t.
True story, friend of mines grandmother was a bit of a "wise woman" reading tea leaves etc. she lived in Stockton when Paul was young and he went to her for advice. She read his tea leaves and said he needed to quit his job and go to London if he wanted to be a success. He did and within a year he'd formed a band and was getting noticed. He wrote a letter to her thanking her for her advice.

The Navy ship I was on had a double helicopter pad. 4 outdoor speakers and amps to give orders to the flight crews. They would play music on slow weekends at sea. I always ilked this one. Your reactions are always informational.

60/70s UK was such a great time for amazing voices. Absolutely love Paul Rodgers! Smooth and crispy at the same time is absolutely apt. Now I‘m just waiting for some Humble Pie and Steve Marriott. Their cover of For Your Love haunts me since I first heard it.

My band was playing a restaurant gig in Perth, Western Australia, and an older and very well spoken lady with a hint of an English accent came up after our set and shared her appreciation for our band, and said how it reminded her of the spirit of her brother's band back in the 70s....it turns out she was Paul Kossoff's sister (step sister). One of those moments.
