It’s time for a diesel vs electric showdown!
We’ve got Mat in a tuned last-generation BMW 335d Touring, and it’s going up against a new Tesla Model 3 and a BMW M340d!
So let’s see how the cars compare. Starting with the 335d, it’s powered by a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo diesel that’s had a stage two tune. As a result, the 313hp and 730Nm power output have been increased to 386hp and 812Nm! Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,735kg.
On the far side, we have the M340d. It’s packing a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo diesel that can produce 340hp and 700Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 1,870kg.
Then finally we have the Tesla. It’s the long-range edition, and it comes equipped with two motors that can put down 490hp and 490Nm. Naturally, power is sent to all four wheels, and it weighs in at 1,840kg.
So how will this one play out? Could the tuned BMW snatch it? Or will it be an easy win for the Tesla? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

There is a difference between jumping and having an insane reaction time and being on the bang
It was close but Matt jumped. If you go frame by frame using the < and > keys, the car has a slight roll about 3 frames before the hands start to move. Which means Matt was coming off the brake even before that.
Yup this is what I came here to say. You can see the car move ever so slightly before the hands even began to move. It was minor but it was a jump

11:55 No question, Matt jumped that start. His front wheel was turning before the hands dropped. Go play it at 0.25 in the YT player, which slows the slo-mo even more. It would be good to know the FPS rate to determine the actual jump time, but clearly a jump!

Around 3-4 frames I’d say
Just so everyone can see the actual result, you can go frame by frame by using comma and period (, & .).
By doing so, you'll see that Mat did indeed jump the start by a frame or two.
Taking into account that the very quickest reaction times from visual stimulus is 100+ ms and the average is 250, so quarter of a second.
Since the video shown is in slow-motion, it's likely 120 FPS or 240 FPS. If it was 120 FPS, each frame would be 8,33 ms and if it was 240, it'd be 4,17 ms.
All this to say: Even if Mat didn't jump the start, which he did, he couldn't have possibly reacted to the hands dropping.
if you predict the hands dropping you can bypass the reaction time and i think that's what the other two drivers did.
so if your car moves even 1ms after the hands dropping, it's not a jump start.

Matt totally jumped - it's super clear going frame by frame. in any case, EVEN if it were exactly that frame, he would still have jumped, since it's impossible to have 0 sec reaction time. Matt needs to wear his clothes backwards for the next FULL video!

As some people already mentioned recently, you should get a set of starting lights with random timing to make the races fair. Mat probably jumped as some people who counted the frames commented, but his reaction was very nearly spot on because he's already so used to the launching procedure by a person.
Matt could never do that, it would only prove his narcissistic behaviour
That is a TERRIBLE idea - we're here to see how fast the CARS are, not the reaction times of the drivers. For the most part they nail the starts, and that's because they CAN time it based on the hand drop and the lead up. Without that you'd constantly have people leaving later the others and the starts would almost never be at the same time.
I/we care about the CAR'S performance not the drivers. TERRIBLE IDEA.

11:04 Watch frame-by-frame (hit the '.' key) and you'll plainly see Matt's car was edging forward for 5 frames before the starter's hands moved.
i had it set to .07 speed and i can see his hands start to go down about 2 frames before Matts tire starts rotating

@@noori770 that is a jump start in motorsport. You cannot have the car move 2 frames after the signal, so even if you time it right it's still a jump start infringement as it's obvious you moved before (including the body and mechanical lags)

Model 3 long range does not have 490 horsepower, it has 370 and if you add the acceleration boost, it increases to 420 or the 430 range. The model 3 long rnage highland however since the acceleration boost isnt buyable yet, its remained at 370-380hp.

I think Tesla sais that the car is about 366kw. If you convert it is 366x1.34= 490hp. But on internet, you will see many numbers written about this car, from 398hp to 498hp.
Yes it does. It has 490hp. It outputs 366kW of power, that is 491hp. There is no acceleration boost on the new Model 3.

Where you guys get 490hp for the Model 3 LR?? It’s listed as 394 online and also, if it had 490hp, given the weight, it would be doing an 11.7 quarter mile as per hp calculation. The M3 Performance had 480hp.

If the wheels are spinning while the hand is moving then he did not jump, it only counts as a jump if the hands were not moving

Yeah but it’s everything to have fun. It’s easy to see how diesel engines (specially the tuned ones) are so polluting. The Tesla is virtually silent and has “zero” emissions, bravo. Even if the energy comes from coal or whatever, it’s much easier to filter that locally than on a city with thousands of vehicles.
Look up the regions where they’re manufacturing and mining for the batteries the people are literally so sick from what it’s done to their cities @@ricarmig

@@ricarmigtbh the tuned one seems tuned badly, that much coal for that lil extrapower. Btw xhp3 transmission tune would be better than alpina one. My 20 year old tuned diesel doesn’t coal like the one in the video.
I've said many times over the years that Matt jumps and his crew always says he didn't. Honestly it has to be pretty blatant to get called on this channel and Matt is consistently right at the edge vs most drivers.

To correct, the 35d has 630nm of torque in stock form, not 730nm. So over 170nm increase with the remap
for about 7 frames before the hands start moving, you can see that Mat jumped the start

I remember owning a tuned E46 330D Touring, what a great car, sadly, the automatic gearbox doesn't like high torque figures so that blew up.... Still, a lovely and Golf GTI performance fast family wagon

They knew he was going to do it in the rolling races to as they changed their usual camera filming position to an angle that made Matts blatant rolling race jumping less obvious. One of them he basically started about a full 2 secs before Chris. Read the comments and thankfully most spotted it. Dude was cheating against a bike in the wet.

@@johnlocke_1 Yeah they're not very entertaining. Takes them 10 minutes to tell you the basic specs of the car and nothing else. Probably only 3 or 4 minutes of actual racing in the entire video. Their old vids are way better.

i had a 435d back in the day mine had uprated intercooler and tune that was it and ran 408bhp on dyno, v fast, but no m3 but great daily.

Just a small comment to all Tesla M3LR videos - they are not 490 HP. They are more around 400. Then performance boost (on pre highland models) brings it to around 460.
Tesla leaves a lot of performance on the table for the LR so they can distinguish the Performance model.
I thought that sounded high. I even went to look it up as you wrote this and then I got sucked into an article. But, I couldn't find anything close to 490 hp; 455 was the most on the Performance trim.

The 490hp is on the (EU) certificatie of conformity of the car. At the end, that counts I think.

@@qoa9985 absolutely amazing. I bought a 2017 with 31k miles in may 2023, it’s currently on 44k miles and no issues at all except a lot of tyres. I’ve serviced it twice and brakes once and the garage always says it’s in amazing condition. There’s never a day it doesn’t get thrashed.
Absolutely love this not just the cars as boring as usual races but yes thanks guys for adding love into it making it something interesting to watch.

I don't like that the start is about estimation and not reaction. There was no lag between the hands going down and the car moving forward. To signal the start, you should use a traffic light with one light that will light up. So no one will be guessing and we will actually see who has the best reaction time.

@@simin382 Actually not the case in sports like F1, there is a minimum reaction time. If you take off 0.01 after the lights go out then you were just guessing when they'd go out as opposed to reacting to any movement. This channel is entertainment but still frustrating to watch this ridiculous start "system" being used

For those who want similar power but no smoke - you can keep the DPF & EGR, and still have about 360bhp in the 335d. I've been running one like that, no issues at all.
mine still has DPF, doesnt smoke and still got better power numbers than this dirty thing... you can often exceed 380HP/800Nm still rocking DPF
I had Unicorn motors do a remap (stage 1 tune) on my 335d and it's got very similar stats. Great to see how it compares
