    Yes she wrote all of the songs by herself on her first unreleased EP (the 4 songs are on RUclips). I recommend you check out her 2014 performance of one of those songs called ‘Crave You’ on The Mystery Hour, a local talk show in her hometown.
    She said that Die Young is about multiple experiences she had growing up rolled into one song. She struggled a lot with her mental health since her early teens (she was later diagnosed with bipolar 2 disorder when she was 22 but didn’t find meds that worked for her until she was 24). As someone with bpd 2 myself, it makes me happy to see a mainstream artist be so candid about it.
    My favorite of her older songs, after Die Young, is Bitter. I haven’t heard her explain this song herself but I interpreted it as her struggling with her relationship with God (she grew up in a very christian and conservative town), which is also very relatable for me.
    I’m glad you’re enjoying her music as much as I am!

      Wow, this is all very interesting - thank you so much for sharing it. I love learning about the woman behind the art, it all kind of makes sense, she has clearly struggled but it's fantastic that she has turned it into something exciting and beautiful 🌻☀️⭐️

      Great post.
      One small point, I think I heard her say in one interview that she entirely wrote three of the songs on the School Nights EP, but Atlantic had cowriters work with her on two of them.
      On her self-published Kayleigh Rose EP her original songs were by her alone.

      Re: Die Young, she said in a BringinItBackwards long-form interview that it came out her Arts summer camp experience when she was 16. She did camp again when 17, and loved them both. Chappell says it was her first time being among other young with whom she could actually identify, and connecting with them made her very happy.
      In very conservative Willard, MO, having to go to church three times a week, she felt not a part of the culture and values. Those summer camps, though, she adored.
      In summer camp aged 16, though, she witnessed a lot of other kids drinking, smoking, doing drugs, behaving recklessly, and that part of the experience scared her... for them. She, an evangelical church girl, very strictly raised, didn't engage in those behaviors herself.
      She didn't want to die young, and she didn't want her new friends she loved being with so much to destroy themselves either. She wrote the song that year.
      More context about those friends: Chappell didn't have a senior year of high school. She graduated a year early, at 17, to pursue music, and she didn't go to college. (She's said she wished she had.) Look at her charming lyric video for Love Me Anyway. IF LITERAL (which is always a question re: lyrics), she met a boy at summer camp... my guess would be her age 17 year at camp. He fell for her and asked her to HIS senior prom. She wasn't feeling it and said no. But he keep pursuing her, and a year later they were dating.
      Perhaps that boy became the long-term boyfriend with whom she was living in early 2020. Explaining her reason for writing Love Me Anyway, a 2020 release, she said she knows she can be hard to love... and the song was a thank you for loving her anyway.
      That relationship -- which I assume she'd known was in trouble -- was to end probably August - October, the same timeframe in which Atlantic was shepherding her out.
      Was that same boyfriend the one who broke up with her on a Tuesday and kicked her out with the rent paid? Her longest-term relationship, an ex from all the way back from her final summer camp? (Living in LA starting in 2018 her best friends had been film industry kids she'd met in summer camp.) Maybe one day she'll divulge that, maybe not.

    Due to her recent and unprecedented success, a lot of people have been discrediting her and saying that she is an “industry plant” which is described by the following:
    An 'industry plant' is largely accepted to mean an artist who presents themselves as being independent and doing things on their own terms, but secretly has the industry backing and money to fund them and to artificially shape such a narrative.”
    This is SO far from the truth! She’s been working hard for 10 years now and she’s finally getting her big break (so well deserved!)
    And yes! She did write this by herself! ❤️

    • @exchildgenius
      @exchildgenius  Месяц назад +4

      I saw these accusations when I was reading up about her. There's NO WAY she is an industry plant. We can all see that she has come up the hard way. She's really put the time in. I may do a video about this soon to put the doubters straight! 🌻🧡

    Die Young attracted not just one label. Columbia, Capital, Republic, and Atlantic all brought her in for showcases, of usually 4 songs.
    She says if she'd known at the time who all the people in the rooms were she'd have been terrified. But she had no idea who they were.
    She liked the AR team of Atlantic Records best and went with them. (See, once again, Adam's two fascinating, extended interviews on the BringinItBackwards channel. Those were 2020 and 2022, and he says there's another one in the works. I can't wait 😃)
    I'm thinking this was not long after a New Zealand schoolgirl got signed based on a song she wrote when... 15?... and "Royals" became a smash hit.

      @exchildgenius  Месяц назад

      ah, this is such an interesting insight - I love your extensive knowledge! It makes sense if the labels were after the 'next Lorde' - her voice on Die Young is in a similar register for sure.

    • @bartlebyscrivener2980
      @bartlebyscrivener2980 Месяц назад

      At the time Chappell was a huge Lorde fan... and was amazed that the first producer Atlantic put her with was LORDE's producer. (People told her she had Lorde's hair, too.)
      Chappell however had no idea what writing sessions were, how they worked, had always written alone, had no idea what production was, on and on. The sessions were awkward and rarely productive... with every producer she was given. They were adult men with fsmilies. She was a teenager as she said, more absorbed by topics like losing her virginity, things she wasn't comfortable bringing up with them. We can and do regard Atlantic as a villian in her story, but in truth 5 years is a long time to invest in development for a young singer. And early 2020 entertainment industry revenue was crashing all over the place, and everybody was cutting costs wherever they could.
      There's a wealth of Chappell lore on youtube. A very fun summary is by The Chronically Online Girl, Nicole Rafiee (sp).
      Adam's 2020 and 2022 extended interviews of her are fantastic sources of details straight from Chappell.
      The January CapitalBuzz/ PopBuzz interview in which she talks about every song is essential viewing.
      Her creative arts summer camps she went on her 16th and 17th summers were important in her career development in multiple ways and one should know about.
      Her first two 2020 Insta Live "slumber party" with fans were just recently put on youtube as vids, and while not as dense with information are interesting glimpses circa May 2020.
      Definitely check out Felea's new (Aug 10) The Rise of Chappell 1 hr 14 min youtube video. It's packed... she's researched the hell out the various scattered sources of Chappell's development. 23 min 40 seconds in she includes some of a Dec. 2021 tiktok. 2021 was when Chappell Hinge date 12 people, only 1 of them female... and the female was the only 1 of the 12 she hit it off with. Sounds like it was her pivotal year in settling on her sexual identity. The tiktok is a sad and disheveled Chappell singing a song she'd just written. The family of a girl she was in love with would disown her if she openly dated women, so the relationship wasn't going to continue... Kaleidoscope & Good Luck Babe-ish.
      If I Say Goodbye
      it's only because
      I can't compare to a boy
      your mother loves
      But I'll try,
      dress up real nice
      I'll end up cheering for
      all the teams your father likes
      And of course
      I know you love me
      I'll only be yours
      temporarily
      Cuz I can't be
      the man of their dreams
      (Ouch! Heartbreaking stuff.)

    No 16 year old should be that good. 😄
    I get WHY she doesn't play keys anymore when she performs (her brand now is about REALLY moving around a lot when she performs live, to engage people) . But I wish she'd play piano or synth on at least one song during her set. I've seen multiple long concert performances now from her, and she doesn't.

I can only imagine these early clips are going to be played to death as she gets bigger and bigger - they'll be used in documentaries, etc for the next decade. If it's your IP you can make bank. Also, (I think) if you register it with RUclips, you get the advertising revenue when people like me use it (though I could be wrong about this). Worth looking into though.
