I wish reactors knew to actually watch Black Swan Chappell interviewed first and then go to White Swan Chappell singing, because more than with any other musical guest I can think of what she's done is build an extended piece of performance art. In the interview segment she's interesting and funny, you get a sense of her as a person, and there's nothing about it that spoils anything... and those costumes form a fascinating set.
I've been casting about in my mental archives for a good while for possible comparables, and I'm still sorting. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess IS the best debut album of original songs by any singer-songwriter, in any genre of popular music, at leaat that I've been able to think of. So many of the greatest singer-songwriter debut albums have had at least one non-original song. Among those that have contained only original songs, every one I know of is been flawed by at least one weak track. Midwest Princess has zero weak tracks, only excellent to spectacular ones, and the range of musical accomplishment displayed in those songs is astonishing. If we drop the "debut" part, but keep the requirement of all original songs, it opens up the possibility for there to maybe be a few equivalents. I've tried to keep some perspective while consumed with Chappellmania, so, as I say, I'm still trying to take fair measure of the greatness of Chappell Roan and Dan Nigro's 14-gem masterpiece. What I will say is that I believe Midwest Princess does stand WITH the greatest albums of all time. That it will prove out over the coming decades to deserve its place with the other greatest works of this art form. I think it is likely to be enjoyed for however long humans still listen to recorded music in album form.

Very nice comment and this was a really good “live” performance of this very catchy song, but the song is so hard to sing - I can’t unfortunately give 100% credit bcs there were a bunch of either background singers covering for her or there were a bunch of pre recorded parts. Don’t get me wrong bcs without them it would be impossible to sing it live. Chappell - in the studio version - is like doing a trio job so I think the production is also great.
Sorry I just made a comment above and Tim Welch was mentioning the background vocals (either pre recorded or live singers)… I wonder if Kelly Clarkson could do this one now!
What you said about having the hook stuck in your head after one listen is a big, big part of what makes her stand out imo! Every song I've heard from her instantly gets lodged in my head, and sounds familiar in a great way
She did pound her chest for the 'think about me' line when she did the warble - it might be vibrato coupled with air bursts from using her chest like percussion for that moment.
For sure! I can’t explain what she’s doing (not a vocalist), but I can feel it in my body when she makes that sound. It’s a sound I can make, too. It’s almost akin to a slight laugh she’s inserting into the line, in sort of a mocking way because she’s feeling bitter. I don’t think it was digitized at all. I think it was a really smart emotional choice.
As you hear more Chappell Roan, you'll inevitably compare her to more and more artists (Gaga, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Taylor Swift, various classic Torch Singers...) then eventually you'll ditch the comparisons (except as context to explain what she's doing in a specific song) because she can AND does incorporate all of those sounds with ease in different songs. Love seeing you break down her vocals on this! You should check out the rest of her debut album and tiny desk performance if you have the chance, she has such a great diversity of sound!
Chappell Roan 100% gives me Kate Bush vibes, I’m so glad that you said that! Not so much in the content or style of her songs necessarily but vocally. I love Kate Bush so much.
i saw her in tulsa a few months ago and i don’t think ive ever had an artist give it their absolute all on stage like chappell. she’s bouncing around, doing high kicks, hair flips and still having enough energy (and breath) to belt like no one’s business. i haven’t watched the videos i recorded from the concerts because i will get post concert depression real quick. can’t wait to see her again
I've seen vids of high kicks from 2023 that were just crazy, pro-dancer high. And now of course she's integrated a splits into her show. She had cheerleader envy in high school and some of this, imcluding HOT TO GO! is her just having a blast living out a female mega-Revenge of the Nerds thing. Of which I enthusiastically approve! She was track team in hig school. Training for touring she does sing while running in place.
Would love to see you react to Chappell’s VEVO live performance of “Red Wine Supernova”! ❤ Another great one of hers is “Picture You” - vocally such an amazing song.
If you listen to the studio album, the big belts at the end of the song are dropped a note or two in the live performance so you know the mic was on. glad to see an artist actually sing live
Mia is fabulous, but I think the Midwest Princess Tour performers have been just Chappell singing plus playing keyboard on Kaleidoscope, Devon on guitar, Allie on bass and I think I saw her on keyboard once(?), and Lucy on drums. IIRC both Devon and Allie support a little with vocals in spots, I forget which song/s Anything else has been backing tracks, is my impression. I'm not absolutely certain Mia's not there, though. I saw them live one time in May, and beyond that have just seen, like everyone else, videos of live performances.
As a classically trained singer that also played with operatics when I was younger (I’m 40 now) and dabbles in singing metal now. I hope to GOD you’ve listened to the album version of this. This version is 2 semitones lower and when she hits that F#5 at a full belt, just chills. Such a hard song to sing. I’ve hit the album version belt ONCE (that I was proud of), such a talented woman.
I love her so much. She’s got one of the greatest natural voices and range of our time. So glad she made it! She reminds me of Cindy Lauper on this song with the little squeak at the end of the bridge
dude, great analysis. one of the best breakdowns out there. thank you for sharing your expertise. i would love to hear more about her 80's vibe in other songs. i'm sure you have great insight into that.
I'm in my late 30s and there have been a few times I've thought I was "too old" for an artist or that I wouldn't like them based on the very surface info I had and then been totally surprised and thrilled to be very, very wrong. Billie Eilish was one, and Chappell is another. Chappell has shocked me more, I think, bc I'm not usually into the kind of campy, spoken-word-bridge, call and reaponse thing she does in a lot of her songs, but what she does just works so well. It's infectious. And her VOICE!
as a punk band singer who used to constantly blow my voice out, in attempts to learn how to NOT do that i have begun to learn how to test the limits of my abilities and actually SING sing. Love the way you explain things, subscribing!
I love Chappell Roan! Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, from beginning to end a fantastic project! Seriously, no skipped songs! Do yourself a solid and check it out.❤🎉🎶✨
She’s from near where I live and hearing her live is an experience!! Glad I got to see her just as she was going international because I may never get to again- since she is so huge now. Love seeing my hometown all over her Hot to Go video.
fun fact: she has been making music for a long time, but it was only in december 2022 that she started taking singing lessons. she really is so amazing.
If you go to 2:18 of the performance (as Chappell drops to her knees), that bridge begins with a callback to Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”. The chords and effects are there. That “Yah, yah, yah, yah” background vocal there is direct reference to a Kate background refrain in “Running”. The whole bridge draws directly from”Running”, but those first 4-5 bars of the “Good Luck” bridge are a direct callback to the bridge in “Running”. Boy, that makes it really interesting. The entire song seems to heavily draw on “Running”, but I do think I vaguely remember another Kate Bush song that this song draws from. Can’t recall which one. The whole thing is genius. I swear I can hear Kate singing, “No Problem….”
But thematically expect LOTS of Alanis Morisette. In fact, it's inevitable that, like Jagged Little Pill, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess becomes a stage musical. All 14 songs are not just wonderful musically, they are powerfully and brilliantly narrative... bangers, bops, and ballads, all. I don't really have favorite Midwest Princess songs, that would feel disrespectful, like suggesting there are lesser sections to a masterwork of art that coheres as a whole. If you do a whole-album reaction all at once, that probably would be best, and then edit them into individual vids if you want. And fasten your seatbelt, you'll be in a rollercoaster ride of celebrstory anthemic peaks and depths of pathos... sometimes both in single peaks.
Great reaction I have some context that may explain the background singer choices. It could be a creative choice but it could also be financial Two years ago she was working in a doughnut shop and just a year ago could finally pay rent. I’ve noticed her touring band is a power trio. No keyboards, backup singers or dancers. Pretty sparce for pop. In this age of streaming where artists aren’t selling 10 million albums like Bon Jovi, this COULD be a financial decision, especially for an up and coming artist I noticed for some one off shows like tiny desk, she adds more musicians. There’s zero tracks during her tiny desk concert. It’s already iconic
This was the first song of hers i ever heard too and tbh the sheer quality of performance combined with the super heavy and relatable topic of the song hit me like a truck, never forget it.
That vocal effect at around 10:42 I’ve only heard once other artist do intentionally, which was Julia Stone’s cover of “Feeding Line” by Boy and Bear for the Australian radio station Triple J’s “Like a Version” section.
I cannot tell you how insanely pleased I am, as an "old music" fan, that a singer who is actually good at singing is taking over pop (or at least the half that Taylor Swift is not in charge of).
Listening to your review was like watching a chef eat a delicious meal and appreciate every single flavor. Loved it. And enjoyed learning more about the art of singing. I’ve loved Chappell ever since my 20 year old daughter had me listen on a road trip back in July and my ears perked up immediately. Whoever this is, she’s GOOD. By the way, wanted to add another vote for you to listen to and review “The Subway” which is Chappell’s prettiest song in my opinion.
You need to react to her Red Wine Supernova live in the Late Show from 5 months ago, her breath control is amazing in that perfornamce since the beggining to the end!! it ends up in a much better version of the song than the studio version!
I don't have to be a musician expert to like this voice. I just hear her few times on radio and i open Shazam to search who is singing. Now i watch many of her songs.
lots of kate bush for sure. shes killing it right now. the coolest part was her costume as the white swan for the performance, when she was a black swan for her interview. highly recommend watching the interview too - she is so funny and sharp. her tiny desk concert was amazing too, thats when i first heard her and was instantly hooked
If you love her belting notes, DO NAKED IN MANHATTAN. It’s basically 3 minutes of her singing “touch me” but fuuuuck when she gets to the last chorus and her voice is floating above the chorus… fuck I love it so much
Bridges are some of my favorite parts of a song. A good bridge and make or break a song. I feel like we don’t have enough bridges anymore, but she’s bringing them back tenfold.
It's really funny that you mention Kate Bush's vocal style and Lana's performance that sounded similar - one of Chappell's biggest vocal inspiration's is Lana! She's talked about it in multiple interviews. I believe she listed Kate Bush as well. Also 5:25, I love Chappell's use of sliding here as well. I know that it's really beautiful in older jazz, but what I thought of was sliding in musical theater numbers! I've mostly trained as a musical theater vocalist, so that's what came to mind for me. I may be biased though, I've been convinced since I first watched Chappell's tiny desk that she's a theater kid at heart lol.
I was going to recommend the NPR tiny desk, so I was happy to hear you say that. There are only three albums I’ve ever replayed over and over and memorized-Midwest Princess, American Idiot, and Criminal by Fiona Apple. Good Luck gives me ABBA vibes in the best way possible.
i highly recommend reacting to her tiny desk concert! she has live backing vocals there and her band with her as well. and a little background before you go further - chappell roan is her stage/drag persona, not her real name, so you have a lot of over the top (and amazing) costuming to look forward to if you watch more of her stuff.
It’s crazy that I didn’t know who Chappel was until I saw a Gunnar Deatherage RUclips short where he was making this outfit and now I can’t stop listening.
Man, I love a good bridge. I really appreciate you drawing attention to it! I was just saying the same thing about the bridge in John Duff's "Be Your Girl." (Which you should also react to!)
i was rushing to the comments to recommend her tiny desk concert but then you mentioned it! absolutely recommended. also just for fun i suggest checking out one of her festival sets bc she has some really fun dance-y pop songs that don’t necessarily lend themselves to npr but are worth seeing/hearing imo! or you can just listen to her album, i suppose. 😅

I remember hearing something that she practices singing while jogging. Really helps when you're running around stage in front of 10-80k ppl
Another great one of hers is “Picture You” - vocally such an amazing song.
I have always loved doing vocal flips I just like the way it feels and when I heard her do it the first time I knew I was gonna love her music.
I had this hook stuck in my head for at least a week straight. She is amazing.
* at least a week gay. Pls. This is Chappell Roan we’re talking abt 😂
If you listen to the studio album, the big belts at the end of the song are dropped a note or two in the live performance so you know the mic was on. glad to see an artist actually sing live
Chappell is one of the ELITE artists that actually sounds better live
Chappell's backup singer on Tiny Desk was Mia Pfirrman, who competed on The Voice! I think she tours with Chappell, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.
So cool!
Yup! I can’t tell if it’s her specifically, but in the background the bassist or guitar player has a mic. At 14:15 you can hear her quite well.
Mia is fabulous, but I think the Midwest Princess Tour performers have been just Chappell singing plus playing keyboard on Kaleidoscope, Devon on guitar, Allie on bass and I think I saw her on keyboard once(?), and Lucy on drums. IIRC both Devon and Allie support a little with vocals in spots, I forget which song/s
Anything else has been backing tracks, is my impression.
I'm not absolutely certain Mia's not there, though. I saw them live one time in May, and beyond that have just seen, like everyone else, videos of live performances.
careful, it's been two months and I'm still absolutely obsessed. You're in for a wild ride my friend.
Shes going to be so huge for decades. Just epic
I really doubt that
you think its a digital glitch but i think its totally her voice which I love! she plays with it super nice to make it sound this way
Chappell takes her producing her bridges VERY seriously
dude, great analysis. one of the best breakdowns out there. thank you for sharing your expertise. i would love to hear more about her 80's vibe in other songs. i'm sure you have great insight into that.
Much appreciated!
Yes! You have to check out her Tiny Desk Concert! It’s the proof that the talent is real
as a punk band singer who used to constantly blow my voice out, in attempts to learn how to NOT do that i have begun to learn how to test the limits of my abilities and actually SING sing. Love the way you explain things, subscribing!
I love Chappell Roan! Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, from beginning to end a fantastic project! Seriously, no skipped songs! Do yourself a solid and check it out.❤🎉🎶✨
Definitely a no skip album - but I’ll raise you one further as I’ll double up certain songs 😭
I love her so much. She’s got one of the greatest natural voices and range of our time. So glad she made it!
Excited to see u react to more of her
She’s from near where I live and hearing her live is an experience!! Glad I got to see her just as she was going international because I may never get to again- since she is so huge now. Love seeing my hometown all over her Hot to Go video.
I’m loving this moment so very much. It’s been a long time since someone made me feel this way. Billie was close but Chappelle has changed my world.
Her performance of Red Wine Supernova on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert is amazing!!
I think that’s my favorite vocal performance of hers, i like it better than the album version
That was the first time I ever heard Chappell. I've been hooked since then 😊
fun fact: she has been making music for a long time, but it was only in december 2022 that she started taking singing lessons. she really is so amazing.
I loved this! You HAVE to check out her Tiny Desk performance for sure!
Coming!
Her costume isn’t just the white swan/black swan but also makes me think of Max from Where the Wild Things Are
Also love her My Kink is Karma song. I just discovered her about a week ago while on vacation. She s going to be HUGE
Favorite bridge ever 😍😍
I love the variety of information you give! Song composition, styles in pop, what's actually happening in the throat, etc. Great video!
🙏🏼✨
This song just keeps on giving!
She reminds me of 80's mix of Cyndi Lauper and Prince. I want more!
Oo, great comparison
She's frickin' great!!!
She is an incredible vocalist ❤ if you listen to her album there is such richness and diversity to her vocal styling
Great reaction
I have some context that may explain the background singer choices. It could be a creative choice but it could also be financial
Two years ago she was working in a doughnut shop and just a year ago could finally pay rent. I’ve noticed her touring band is a power trio. No keyboards, backup singers or dancers. Pretty sparce for pop. In this age of streaming where artists aren’t selling 10 million albums like Bon Jovi, this COULD be a financial decision, especially for an up and coming artist
I noticed for some one off shows like tiny desk, she adds more musicians. There’s zero tracks during her tiny desk concert. It’s already iconic
Interesting, thanks for sharing. 🙏🏼
I absolutely love her voice!! She kind of reminds me a bit of Kate bush with a mix of Tori Amos in there. I hope I get a chance to watch her live 🎉
So glad you've found her!! She truly is Amazing ❤
She's absolutely amazing. Pink Pony Club had me, but this song is something else entirely.
love to see you do a vid for Orville Peck!
Interesting, I’ll check it out!
Oh I love Angus & Julia Stone! I don't think I've heard any of her solo work, I'll have to check that out.
Haha, love this! ✨🙏🏼
The second you mentioned Kate Bush i jumped bc that's exactly the first person she reminded me of when i heard her singing for the first time!!!!
You need to react to her Red Wine Supernova live in the Late Show from 5 months ago, her breath control is amazing in that perfornamce since the beggining to the end!! it ends up in a much better version of the song than the studio version!
you saying “i can tell she can belt” and i was like ooooo boy tim i’ve very watched your video before but i KNEW you were in for a treat 😂
lol! 😂
I don't have to be a musician expert to like this voice. I just hear her few times on radio and i open Shazam to search who is singing.
Now i watch many of her songs.
Can't wait to hear you react to her Tiny Desk concert! Loving your videos.
I think you'd love to listen to more of her. she does interesting things with her voice
hearing you pick apart her song “guilty pleasure” would be great!
lots of kate bush for sure. shes killing it right now. the coolest part was her costume as the white swan for the performance, when she was a black swan for her interview. highly recommend watching the interview too - she is so funny and sharp. her tiny desk concert was amazing too, thats when i first heard her and was instantly hooked
I thoroughly recommend reacting to her tiny desk concert. It's superb.
If you love her belting notes, DO NAKED IN MANHATTAN. It’s basically 3 minutes of her singing “touch me” but fuuuuck when she gets to the last chorus and her voice is floating above the chorus… fuck I love it so much
Oo, I’ll check it out.
Bridges are some of my favorite parts of a song. A good bridge and make or break a song. I feel like we don’t have enough bridges anymore, but she’s bringing them back tenfold.
Yes!
Can't wait to see you react more to her!
7:35 If you want to hear Chappell sing a more hyper pop sounding songs you have to listen to her song Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl
2:12 THIS MAN IS VOCAL COACH MARK RUFFALO I LOVE IT
but i loved the video definitely hit that like right away
🤣. Ruffalo is awesome.
Chappell Roan renaissance ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
Same reasons I liked it! Great job coach!
Appreciate it!
I CALLED KATE BUSH IMMEDIATELY TOO! Very creative use of her voice creating a mysterious kind of where is she going next quality.
Me too! ❤
Thanks! More coming.
yes yes yes all the Chappell more Chappell
Your reaction was delightful. On my hands and knees begging you to react to her Tiny Desk concert 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Posted this right before you said you plan to react to it! I'm thrilled!!
7:36 Me: "OOoo, JUST WAIT, here we goooo!!" ❤❤❤❤
Hahahaha
She is so amazing!!❤❤
It’s crazy that I didn’t know who Chappel was until I saw a Gunnar Deatherage RUclips short where he was making this outfit and now I can’t stop listening.
She’s from Missouri. We adore her
omg i love it when people react to her music
Man, I love a good bridge. I really appreciate you drawing attention to it! I was just saying the same thing about the bridge in John Duff's "Be Your Girl." (Which you should also react to!)
Cool, thanks!
i was rushing to the comments to recommend her tiny desk concert but then you mentioned it! absolutely recommended. also just for fun i suggest checking out one of her festival sets bc she has some really fun dance-y pop songs that don’t necessarily lend themselves to npr but are worth seeing/hearing imo! or you can just listen to her album, i suppose. 😅
