There's a comic book cover artist, Frank Cho, who about a month ago did a variant cover of a Superman comic book, that had Zatanna the (sexy) magician's doves and rabbits escaping in the background. And one cheeky rabbit was holding Zatanna's wand in its paws. I guarantee that that wasn't a coincidence, and that Frank Cho is as smitten with the Midwest Princess as we all are here!

What impresses me about her is how she draws on old country/western music and seamlessly pulls the narrative structures and vocal breaks characteristic of that genre into rock/pop. Listen to Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Sr, Marty Robbins and Johnny Horton--and you'll see it. As a Midwesterner, I can tell she grew up here and listened to these old classic singers. As much as I love Gaga--she couldn't do what Chappell Roan does here.

The other musical member of her family was her late, maternal grandfather Dennis Chappell. They were all Missourians... nobody moved away. The music in her home -- she says she grew up in a trailer park -- was Christian and country. When her family was surprised to learn she could really sing and was very talented, they urged her to go into those genres. Chappell, a gal with her own mind, went a different way. But, yes, she grew up thoroughly immersed in the culture of smalltown southwest Missouri and clearly picked up the yodels/flips and propensity for narrative songwriting from country western music.

    • @myrkvith9
      @myrkvith9 3 месяца назад +4

@@bartlebyscrivener2980 I grew up with those musical influences as well (and most people don't even know "western" music from "country western" music)--when I first saw her name I knew immediately that Roan was from the Marty Robbins' song. She represents that music within her oeuvre so accurately.

I'm a 40 year old Broadway gay who finds it hard to listen to a lot of contemporary artists because their voices either don't have or don't make use of the power, support, breath control, clarity and technique that I have grown used to, and Chappell Roan got her hooks into me because not only is the songwriting fabulous and queer but her voice is SO strong and so versatile. I also think she is exceptionally good at crafting songs that lean into her strengths as a singer, and that part of why her songs are so energizing is because she doesn't have many limits on the kinds of songs or melodies she can sing. She has a great head voice, a great chest voice, a fabulous mix, and tremendous command of ALL of it. She has a really strong (and apparently largely intuitive!) understanding of her instrument.
This song and performance is definitely one of my favorites for a lot of the reasons you listed, it lets her go brassy and big and since it's the last song of the set she doesn't need to hold anything in reserve and can just let it rip. I appreciate that so many of her songs have a strong narrative focus and that she uses her voice to accentuate the storytelling so much. She brings a very queer theatricality to the "Chappell Roan" persona that carries through into every aspect of her art. The songs and the singing and the visuals and the vibe are all integrated into the overall experience, she doesn't have to rely on studio production values because the songs are just really well crafted (thank GOD she's both willing and able to write real bridges with contrasting material!) and I just think she is one of the most exciting new artists in a long, long time!

Nobody's stepped up to explain "supernova" yet?
    A'ight
It's when a star explodes, and is one of the most sudden and poweful eruptions of energy in existence.
Track 1 on Midwest Princess is about how men, whether due to incompetence or just sheer selfishness/disinterest, never make her... you know.
Here in Track 2 she's fallen "in love with the thought of" this experienced female player. And while she's still working up the nerve to actually let it happen, she's thinking that with enough red wine she might... and that with all her imagining and anticipating, what she'd likely have would be astronomically powerful. An idea she likes.
    It's a great song.

I feel like your reactions are really ADHD-friendly compared to other times I've tried to get a vocal coach perspective on songs/artists i enjoy.
The format of listening through the song first and getting the quick facial reactions works well for me. And then when you start on the more detailed commentary, you're able to speak about the technique details in a way that doesn't completely lose me to spacing out. It's hard to describe, but I find it to be a really efficient and audience-friendly presentation of info.

Speaking of how incredible the musicians around her are, one of the greatest aspects of this performance for me is that this isn’t what she normally does live. This is the only performance by this lineup; the singer, both strings, and keyboard player are not part of her regular band. As far as I can tell she literally just put this group together for this one performance and they absolutely killed it.
More than anything this reminds me of the performance The Cure did on Unplugged in the ‘90s. More than just doing the same thing they normally did but with acoustic guitars they got really creative and replaced their usual keyboards with toy pianos, xylophones and kazoos. That’s what she’s done here, just completely changed what she normally does in order to fit this format and it worked perfectly.

Wow Tim your incredibly thorough well studied vocal analysis of this performance was everything. It's my favorite song of the album because the first time I listened to it, the song just unlocked this deep sorrow in me that felt like I needed to triumphantly belt out at the top of my lungs every chorus. Very therapeutic and I got obsessed with replaying it. When I finished my first listen to the album on the bus home, my entire world was changed. The drop out chorus. Yes!! And over sing the talkie parts, over talk the singy parts. Loved all of your observations in this song as well. The part that gave you goosebumps. Yup. Loved when you laughed at “be bimbos ladies, be bimbos.” Something tells me you can dance watching you react to this. I have been writing and thinking about this song for weeks now. Where to start with this masterpiece. I just discovered Chappell Roan a few weeks ago and this song has me hypnotized. Absolutely floored by that live vocal performance. Love a dramatic time signature change. And this song has an epiiiiiiiic one for the ages. Then the second tempo change (within the chorus itself!!! -chef’s kiss) prompted by “Let’s pick it up now” which is so funny and yet so perfect and reminds me of an aerobics class or a video game. This is one of the most joyous songs I’ve ever heard. Some of my favorite moments: the 3:10 Cher-esque “Baby” and the way she says rabbit for some reason. She is so expressive and emotive. I could write separate essays each entirely devoted to analyzing/raving about the drummer, Chappell’s command of the stage, the background vocals, and the studio recording of the song itself, its producers, songwriters, engineers. Not an ounce of fat on that recording. Flows seamlessly between challenging tempo changes. Never losing its groove. This song feels like one long chorus of joy. I love how all the live performances I’ve seen of RWSN have really brought the 4:10 vocal melody to front, where on the record it mixed with other vocal overdubs. It’s more of a vocal drop out live which I love. Where the most powerful vocal is showcased. Chappell’s voice is like the bigger crayon boxes. She just has more colors to choose from. Chappell is like Simone Biles. Her songs just start out at a higher degree of difficulty. I like how your videos address technique as well as the magic. I love the nerd outs. Also a fan of your studio sign on the wall. Looks great. Sharp.

"For whatever reason, she makes me think of Dolores O'Riordan"
The song that first brought four major record labels knocking on 16 yo Kayleigh Amstutz's youtube door was "Die Young." Recommended.
It doesn't sound like Cranberries' Zombie, but some of the underlying sentiment is similar. Young people shouldn't be dying for no good reason.
Also, on Chappell's tiktoks multiple times she has spoken pretty candidly about her own struggles with depression. This young woman who is now successfully bringing such a ray of light into so many other people's lives.

    • @bartlebyscrivener2980
      @bartlebyscrivener2980 3 месяца назад +1

And the truly incredible thing is, NONE of those iconic musicians has every written and recorded a complete album of original music that song-for-song is as phenomenally great as The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. (Elton only writes music, doesn't write lyrics, for one thing.) Granted, Chappell co-wrote with Dan, and with multiple other co-writers. But still, she took part in writing or outright wrote all 14 songs... and all 14 range from excellent to mind-bogglingly great.
It's an astonishing accomplishment that not even Chappell's own biggest heroes ever achieved.

Tim, when you get to HOT TO GO! that might be the only one of the 14 studio recordings that one might consider deeming a less than stellar song. But it is the one song on Midwest Princess that absolutely needs to be SEEN performed, as opposed to just heard. Chappell wrote it very specifically to be the biggest live audience engagement piece she could create, and at that it succeeds better than anything since Queen's We Will Rock You (is that the title? I forget) or Village People's YMCA. Is it a showcase for vocals? No. Is it a monster of a song anyway? Yes.
She had "audience fun" in her head, but she wanted non-fiction. And she transformed her idea into reality.
Experience HOT TO GO! in its natural habitat, such as at a festival, or when she and Olivia sang it to an arena full of Livies in LA last week, and anybody who says that isn't a great song, I'm sorry, they're incorrect.

What I love so much about this performance is the end part is where she ramps up and I just feel like I could listen to another hour of that belting. It leaves a longing for more. And as a queer person and the song theme and meaning I remember when I was first with a woman this song summed it up. You could not get enough of that. This is such a theme with Chappel. She creates artistry that makes the sound, the story, the tempo, the emotion, all match. Picture You is another great example of this. She builds and releases in the performance. Much like the lyrics insinuate.

However, it evokes keeping a lid on somebody... esp. on their libido! Evangelical church, authority, control, any kind of restriction of her behavior or what she'd sing (her family was pushing for country and Christian pop) was what she was fleeing when she left Willard, Missouri for LA. She felt she had to get away from the conservatism and intolerance of western Missouri, and did.

There is a PBS series called "The Cavern Sessions" filmed here in TN in the Cumberland Caverns, where I saw her in S2. The acoustics there are amazeballs but I'm still not sure I'd want to be inside caverns with all that resonance going on around me.

Since you loved this performance, you absolutely have to watch Remi Wolf's tiny desk - it just came out, I think in this past week. Remi is a very, very fun performance artist like Chappell. Her performance of her song Toro gives me similar vibes as this performance of Red Wine Supernova. If listening to Chappell is like a bubbly red sangria, then Remi is like tea with honey. Also, 6:00 I've wanted to cover this song because I do best - stylistically - when I do a more brassy belt. It's always easier for me to get into a higher register that way, and I find it's easier to do flips & sliding. I already have so much fun singing Red Wine Supernova, even if it's just for myself. Chappell is such a talented and versatile vocalist.

Since we're talking Red Wine Supernova now it's a good song to underscore how Chappell and Dan have embedded in her songs homages/tributes to ( /easter eggs for fans) some of the many female musicians who have inspired her.
In her two-song MTV Push video she says it's true that in IRL she never had a double bed until age 25. I.e., last year, 2023. (She started making decent money only last year.) It's the double bed that is the homage, though. Back at my house I got a California King. Okay maybe it's a twin bed. (And I got roommates. ("Don't worry, it's cool!")) 🤣 Love her lyrics.
I didn't know this, reactor Fern Stone pointed it out, but "California King" is a Rihanna song. It's, yeah, about a bed.
Chappell has said she loves Rihanna, and that for a good while Stay was her favorite song.
There are other similar nods written into the songs of Midwest Princess.
Chrissie Hynde is probably the greatest female writer of original rock songs ever. (I've seen nobody else anywhere bring this up, but) I believe Chappell wrote a quick shout-out to Chrissie, too, into Red Wine Supernova.
Listen to The Pretenders' song "Message of Love."
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is IMO one of the greatest albums of original songs in any popular music genre, ever. These little additional features that a person might notice only after many listens, IMO only underscore what a masterpiece it is. It's like a great movie you walk out of already well pleased, but that lingers on your mind; and then half a day or a day later another subtle connection or nuance in it dawns on you. Those are my favorite kinds of movies. And this work of art is my favorite kind of album.

You need to check out her singing Red Wine Supernova the DSCVR version on her RUclips channel. It’s a great version as well but a little different from the tiny desk version. I’m not a vocal coach so I can’t really explain the difference in sound other than just more “open sounding”? It’s her singing live but she’s less in her character/playing a different character and it changes the way she sings the song. The belts seem a little longer and it sounds less gritty but in a great way. I like both versions and switch up which one I listen to often. You should also check out her singing pink pony club live on her RUclips channel (it’s called “City Sessions” with Amazon music). There is an electric guitar and live audience singing along and it totally changes the vibe. Just the instruments alone make such a difference in the vibe of the song. If I want to cry to pink pony club I listen to it on tiny desk but if I want to rock out, I listen to the electric guitar solo one. Both are great versions and it’s fun to see how depending on how she is dressed/the venue/what instruments are around, she will change how she sings the song and it always gives it a fun surprise.
