    One of Chappell’s favorite artists is Ethel Cain! (She has spoken about her many times and supported her online) Who I also really enjoy. Hayden, the artist behind Ethel Cain, released an album called “Preachers Daughter” which a concept album about a fictitious woman named Ethel Cain living in the south who is struggling through her faith, her relationship with men, and her view of the world. I would love to hear your thoughts when you have the chance (I know you are so busy!) I think as an artist, you would really enjoy it. It feels almost like a sung novel and each song follows her story from beginning to end.

      Wow, that sounds VERY interesting. Will add Ethel Cain to the list. Thanks! 🌻

    You can tell by listening to Chappell that she is the music nerd kid in her small town. I was that kid in my tiny town of 1500 but I had no musical talent to speak of. The channeled all of it into honing her talent and skills at a super young age and it’s so impressive!

    I love this song. When you watch her doing this track live, it appears that she might be using backing tracks for the backing vox and synths but who cares. The bulk of the band is playing live and she is so incredibly powerful as an emotional singer. I love her music.

      Interesting. I was thinking of her Tiny Desk concert and assumed she took the same band on tour. No wonder the bvs are exquisite if she is doing them herself 😁

      Her touring musicians are Devon on guitar, Allie on bass, and Lucy on drums. And that's it! Yes, those delicious backing vocals are backing tracks by Chappell.
      And wow, does it all work. They've had to scale it up in a hurry this year, from expecting to play mostly to audiences of 1 or 1.5k people, to over 80,000 at Lollapalooza.

    Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell have the same producer - his name is Dan Nigro!
    In 2020, Chappell got dropped by her label (Atlantic Records) and she had just started working with Dan on Pink Pony club. The label that dropped her was so desperate to drop as many artists as possible during COVID so they gave her all the rights to her music (which ended up being such a great thing in the long run!) Dan never gave up on her though and brought her back to LA after she moved home for a while since she couldn’t afford living there after the label drop and they wrote together her debut album “the rise and fall of a Midwest princess” and she was eventually signed to Island Records. we LOVE DAN for believing in her! He is very talented and one of the best producers at the moment. They are currently writing her second album together.
    I will say I love Olivia and Taylor is very successful - but Chappell is very very special and I don’t think anyone is doing anything remotely close to what she’s doing.

      Great comment.
      One little expansion on it: Chappell acknowledges that Atlantic was uncommonly generous with her when cutting her loose. However, while she does control Pink Pony Club, Love Me Anyway, and California, her final three Atlantic releases, she owns only majority interest in them. Atlantic kept a piece of them for for itself, and so now profits from them. They're make money from the songs... Chappell just makes more.

    You're doing great in these, at articulating the way Chappell absolutely slays every aspect of fantastic songwriting, singing, sound production, performing... on and on. She does it all so, so wonderfully. When you put it all together nobody else today remotely compares. And I have great difficulty coming up with who in any era might be comparable. One would think there must be SOMEbody. But IDK. Maybe not?

    • @exchildgenius
      @exchildgenius  Месяц назад +2

      I didn't reply to this straight away as I've been racking my brains to think of somebody who excels in EVERY area... there are certainly people who rule in 2 or 3 areas but I'm still trying to think of someone who does it in all. The closest I got was Bowie - but he doesn't really have the voice - i mean, it's good but he's no Chappell Roan 😂

      My favorite Bowie album is Station to Station. Eight gorgeous songs... but Wild Is the Wind is a cover. I saw him on his 1976 Station to Station, "Thin White Duke" era tour. By '76 he had several big albums to pull from... The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Hunky Dory, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, more. Lots of great material. Tremendous concert. I have a cd of nearly the same setlist played in Nassau Coliseum within a few days of when I saw him in Norfolk Scope, so I get to enjoy revisiting that tour.
      All said and done, though, Bowie never made an album as all-around great as The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. And I enjoyed Chapell in May performing her entire album plus Good Luck Babe and Love Me Anyway, than I did even that wonderful 1976 Station to Station tour concert.
      Chappell's show in May 2024 I also enjoyed better than Elvis when I saw him in July 1975. To be fair, I wasn't really an Elvis fan yet. (I would become one the next year when I heard his 1954-1955 Sun Sessions.) And comparing them also isn't apples-to-apples: Elvis didn't write songs, period.
      I'll refrain from comparing her live, yet, to Springsteen on his greatest tour, in 1978, or the Rolling Stones' greatest tour... I saw them July 1972 on their historic Exile on Main Street Tour. Chappell needs a little more time to develop a bigger body of great original songs to compete with those shows. But it may happen.

      @@bartlebyscrivener2980 oh to see Bowie in the 70s! I saw him in the 90s and dare I say it, I found it a bit underwhelming - though Morrissey was the support act and he was a bit of a letdown too. maybe that's too harsh but I was expecting a life-changing experience and it never happened! Still at least I got Chappell live to look forward to!

    One down side with her current performance setup is that while her band is miked for backup singing on some songs, she's using a backing track on other songs. So those backing vocals here are probably actually her. Her superstardom is SO new I'm wondering if it just hasn't occurred to her yet that she can now afford to bring backup singers on tour with her now. She knows at least one good one (the one who sang backup on her Tiny Desk Concert).

    • @exchildgenius
      @exchildgenius  Месяц назад

      Yes. I saw the tiny desk concert before this and just assumed she toured with a similar set-up. You're right, she's shot up so quickly she probably hasn't had time to even think about re-configuring/rehearsing shows with a different set-up. I'm fascinated by her and will be watching closely. ⭐️
