Sometimes it is difficult to explain things to a newbie, if you play it a very long time (like i and you did :)
I prefer playing 120/24 and this is also very good for new players. For a new player a tutorial (with all the little things) for the first week and the first horde night is the best tutorial. And build near a trader is very good, because the trader is (was in A19) your best friend in 7DtD :)

There's 2 types of "bars". The ones in the 1365 shape menu are just considered a block shape, you can have them in plywood, wood, concrete, or steel, and you will damage those with a shotgun. However, you can make the old "Iron bars" in the forge, and those allow ranged weapons to pass through them as though they have no hitbox.

Great video even for someone with many hours in. I have never really done the "pathing" tricks but it's good stuff to know. Lately I've settled into a "kill pit" sort of thing. Took over a house. Set up on the top floor and knocked a hole in the center of the floor. Started with barbed wire fences and spike and now traded up to electric fences and a blade trap. Day 49 on standard settings was easy peasy and they are hilarious doing the herky jerky on those electric traps.

I like to do a 4-sided step pyramid for the "stairs" to the corridor, with actual stairs at the bottom to give them a more clear path at first. I also like to offset the "attack window" so that I'm always smacking them perpendicular to the beam they're walking across, massively increasing the chances they fall off when hit.
    .
It's overkill, but I also like to dig a really deep trench, with really easy ways out, to keep them cycling in their pathfinding longer. That's the main trick to keeping the damage low on your base. The more time they spend pathing, the less time they spend attacking blocks. It doesn't matter how fast they get back to you, all that matters is how smoothly they do so.

Thanks Capp! Hey I wanted to share an unrelated tip with you since you're always giving us so many. I saw in one of your recent videos that your still getting at loot thats behind partially broken down blocks by looking through the cracks. What I just discovered is that in A20 these blocks have been made much weaker and can be broken in one swing with almost any item/tool (though I have found 1 or 2 that still require more hits). Now i'm finding it quicker to just break them instead of trying to find the right spot in the crack to interact with it. I hope that makes sense.

Definitely good to try to keep it simple. I've built some epic bases but the bigger you get the weirder their pathing can get. Then you just end up with a big project you have to do a lot of work to fix and maintain. My biggest focus right now is to make something that let's you collect the loot all night. In a20 the loot doesn't seem to want to roll down ramps too well. So again big dig project without the desired results.

if you use wedge tips for the walkway for the zombies, they will slip off and fall down and try to get at you again. They see the wedge tips as a valid path. If you aim the wedge tips downward and have the flat spot on top, you can place half blocks on top of the wedge tips and they will slip off. The killing corridor is one of my favorite builds and I ran it almost all the way up to day 110.

For bunker style builds, I've taken a liking to building "mushroom" style bunkers. I got the idea from some ww2 pillboxes, I don't remember who it was that made them. I think they might have been british "in case of invasion" defenses. Essentially instead of the corner posts, you have a single, larger center post, and the roof simply overhangs all the way around. It's the same amount of materials and work, but gives you a full 360 degree field of fire, as you move around the bunker.

Looks like a tall pillbox with no windows on the first floor. I may have a stairwell or latter in the middle leading down. Makes a great place to store, sort and make stuff at night.

12:30 it is recommend to put sledge turret on half block so when you met wi demolition it will not hit the chess part.
also another trick for sledge turret user. place a block before the point that zombie will get into sledge turret range so it have to jump up then drop down. this process will take speed out of zombie so it will not jump zooming througe sledge turret range and the turret will keep up with zombie easier.
for the one that didn't know if you hit demo in the chess he will trigger the bomb on himself and do a lot of block damage that will destroy your base.

On base 1 (the bunker) it's super helpful to fill those fighting slits with plates. Then the whole perimeter supports the top (much stronger). And it allows your base to be a tower base as "plan B". Plus in A20, zombies can get through an exactly 1x1 opening if they get boosted up 1 block by a dog or another crouching zombie. Plates + wedge tips + spikes with a top-escape, and bars around the top, is a great combo.
On the stairs issue with the corridor, I do it exactly opposite of what you describe. I use block-jumps at the low levels, which zombies 'cannot' get confused about. and then it becomes a ramp near the top after it's merged into a 1-wide path. Most zombie confusion with paths up, are when they are halfway up a ramp or stairs, and trying to jump up to an opposite direction ramp or stairs, and depending on their exact placement, they may not be able to make the jump, that's when they get frustrated and start beating up your stairs. The other way zombies damage your stairs is when they get in a traffic jam, and the zombie waiting behind other zombies starts hitting things because they're stuck in traffic. If you have a broad, spread out block-step at the ground level, it breaks up the traffic flow and eases congestion at the 1-block wide path. (although your design where the narrowing to 1-block path is done with a drop does eliminate a lot of damage caused by traffic jams).

      @jssxa9998 Год назад

pls make a vdieo on what u mean

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck Год назад

      @@jssxa9998 which part?
the base-1 suggestion just uses plates to abuse 7D2D's odd building mechanics, to 'float' support through a seemingly open area. Just makes the support of the top of the bunker more robust. And also limits the space available so it's very hard for A20 zombies to crawl through the opening.
the ramp? takes a bit more to describe. I don't have the software and such to make a video really.
visually looks like this from the side:
      ______
      \
      \
      \
      \ _
      __ | __
      _________ | ______ |
It's a ramp, which goes down until you're 2 blocks above ground. Then it goes out 1 square block flat (still 2 blocks above the ground), then jumps down to a wrap-around of 1-block-high square blocks. In the poopy depiction I made with keyboard symbols, that bottom most part is a C shape made out of of five 1 block high square blocks, which wraps around the 2-block high square block. And then from that block, the ramp.
If it makes it simpler to understand, just build most of a 2-high pyramid out of square blocks. Like lay down 6 blocks in 2 rows of 3, then on one of the middle blocks put on more square block on top. Then ramp up from there.
The intent of it, is this:
Coming at it from ANY direction, they jump up 1 block somewhere in that 5 square blocks in a C shape wrapping the bottom of the ramp. From there, they will jump up to the single 2-block high square block. In this pathing, they cannot get confused at the corners of stairs or ramps. They will always hop twice. Once onto the wrap-around of 5 1block high blocks, and then again onto the single 2-block high block. And all the zombies end up on exactly that block. Then a ramp up from there. Zombies run up ramps fastest. And you want them to evacuate that block and make room for more zombies fast.
It's impossible for the zombies to interact with your ramp (or stairs whatever), from any direction other than the desired direction. There's no issues of zombies 'wanting' to jump 1.1 blocks up at the side of your ramp, failing, and getting angry. There are other pyramid-like layouts for the bottoms of ramps. But making it 1 block high jumps, removes any/all ambiguity from the zombie pathing.
The only block likely to be hit by zombies, is the 2-high square block. if you have just 10 cement, use it on that particular block. Later it can be your only steel block on a concrete base. This is because even with the ramp running up, zombies sometimes have to wait their turn to jump up to that block. And they are impatient & grumpy. But really this is the most robust ramp/stairs/etc. build, as it really minimizes path confusion & traffic jams for zombies.
Faster feed of zombies into your kill zone also maximizes XP & Loot. But it's worth slowing them down to make 2 hops, so that they don't get stupid about how to go up your ramp, and beat on things instead of pathing. Granted, most people make bases which let zombies fall (to make survival easier). I consider that a waste of zombie XP/loot ;) But you could make your elevated path cause falling. The '2 Jumps + Ramp' is very good at avoiding confused zombie pathing & traffic jams for your elevated pathways, either way.
Personally, I like to set up traps & shooting angles which pre-soften zombies for player-made killing hits (so the traps don't steal XP). Feed zombies in as fast as possible for max XP/loot. And set up the shooting angles to make cops & demos pretty easy to deal with. I call it a reversed kill corridor. But that's a whole different and much more complicated discussion.
( note: right now I'm experimenting with using half-blocks for a zero-jump system, which is impossible to confuse zombies, and would speed up their route into the kill zone. That probably would require a video though. Zombies know they can't jump 1.5 blocks up. They just often 'think' they can jump 1.1 blocks up, but can't, and go irritable as they approach the sides of ramps/stairs. )

If you have a bunker style base, I HIGHLY recommend that you place some ramps on the outside of the roof, followed by a ring of bars extending outward from the ramp tips (even wood is fine). This will keep the zombies from stacking and climbing onto your roof, then causing havoc from above. You can also walk around the bars to get easy headshots from above, just watch out for vultures, spiders and cop vomit.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck 2 года назад

You can kinda combine the bunker and tower bases into 1 base design. Put plates in the fighting openings around the bunker, which prevents crawl-through, and adds a ton of support to the roof (your openings aren't structural gaps anymore). Then put in the wedge tips on the ground to ramp zombies up into spikes. But instead of a solid roof, use iron bars, and place them slightly higher (like sitting right on top of where he built the roof blocks in the video), and extend them out one block beyond the spikes around the edges. (you'll need a 'double-bars' spot to attach the ladder to). If your bunker gets compromised, you go up the ladder and you're in a tower base, with a hollow core which you can shoot down into, as well as a periphery you can shoot down into.
But yeah, none of that protects against cops or vultures. If you can get a junk turret though, and place it on a corner post several blocks higher than the roof, it'll clean up vultures which get close at least. One junk turret with a drum magazine mod can handle a LOT of vultures without reloading. Just make sure it's just high enough not to shoot at ground zombies.

the bunker base is usually my go to, but i put the front door on the second floor and put 5 poles outward, then build stairs attached to those poles. it will give them a path to you so they will run to the door, you then set arms out on the side to put electric traps, and under the stairs (ground level) you have blade traps for when they fall. its a great starter/beginner base and its like the only build i know that works. 3rd floor i usually have my forges and a cage so i can shoot down by the door. you then can surround your base with trip wires for a alarm and put mines on the 3 blocks at top of stairs. if there is a steep hill going down next to you they will dig to you and dig up under the bunker.

A favorite of mine is a proper pillar base. Take a 4x4 square and place 4 block tall pillars in each corner, and connect them all together at the top, leaving the 3x3 space in the middle open for bars. Rinse and repeat, I think the largest I've built was easily over 50 of those squares. Just run bars all over the thing, place hatches or shutters ringed with bars in that 3x3 for throwables. And it's super cheap to repair, even if half of it gets knocked down because of some demo accidents. I usually have an escape tunnel in a central bunker of the thing myself, I just fill in one of those pillars except for the center block and run a ladder down.
It's probably going to make a comeback for me since TFP broke zombie pathing so my moat base is useless since zombies don't know what ladders are lmao.

Nice educational video for beginners to 7D2D for some easy starter base ideas for horde night. Heck I will even admit and old vet like myself learned something new, double stacking the bars like that. Never even considered doing that before, even though it seems such a simple concept *Mind blown*. I think that will become more popular since the last patch with some of the shapes losing a lot of the durability they used to have (like the poles, concrete used to be 5000 now 1250, so some bases will have to adapt or be keen to repair more frequently, but the bars have full durability and with the ability to now make concrete or steel bars those should become more popular in use.

As for the corridor base design, instead of using those iron bars which aren't very cost effective for how much damage they can tank, you could instead go for hatchdoors with a space free above it but with a roof above that free space - effectively making a much better in terms of cost effectiveness airlock between you and the zombies where you can freely fire at them without them being able to get to you - as well as having a means to close and open the hatches as you see fit.
The design that I use is having robotic sledges knocking zombies down from the raised platform, and those that get through get funneled into a row of ladder hatches. I have all of them open except for 2 right at the start, every time a hatch is destroyed I move back one and open another hatch so I'm always 2 hatches away from the horde.
I've never had it so the horde reaches the end, but if they were to reach the end I lower a draw bridge that leads to a tower styled base with spinning traps that I can turn on as my last line of defense.
I played up until level 200~ or so on my last playthrough and had absolutely no problems with that base design, some good advice I would part would be to add blade traps down into the fall zone as that can keep the horde more manageable as the blade keeps them floor bound for longer or turns them into crawlers which again keeps the wave manageable.
That and to make sure that you don't just upgrade the pillars, upgrade the floor surrounding it too, and even double up on the pillars making them 3x3's for more durability. You want the floor upgraded because sometimes your sledge might trigger a demo zombie, or if you have turret traps then they can often trigger the demo's also. If a demo goes off he can destroy the weak ground your sturdy pillar is resting on and instantly topple a portion of your platform.
You want turrets mainly for birds, if you can have their aim away from the zombies side of the platform so that you can avoid problems like triggering demo's.

I`m guilty myself of always going too over the top with my bases and it just becomes so elaborate and full of traps and corridors the horde poses no threat whatsoever so I started building more of the tower ones just to have some very basic protection and just actively play more of the game. Once you figure how to trap zombies in running loops and stuff the hordes becomes way too easy and cheesy and it feels like cheating almost.

It worked well in creative testing but on our server, the sledges barely ever succeed in knocking the Zs off and those that land in the pit go into destroy mode pretty much immediately. I am not sure how best to alter the design :/

I feel something is wrong with the basic kick.off loop, which prevents me from investing into just pumping more turrets out.

Good stuff. I get that you were just doing ultra basic and seeing the smaller beams at the end for the zombs to run across does suggest to so that they should experiment. But I do hope you will look into using the rounded beams or pillars laying horizontal instead of flat beams some day. Unless FP has nerfed those the zombs have a very hard time running on them and fall off if they must deviate pretty much at all. My typical bas will have a beam set up long enough to put at least 3 bars along he path. I want the zombs to jump over and not get into hit mode. Just wasting resources to have to rebuild over and over. Let them jump then try to land on a rounded beam. They seldom do and the times they do then I am waiting for them so instead of things breaking down and 30 zombs getting to me at once, I get 1 or 2 a minute spread over horde night.
I need to run a horde base test to see if they nerfed them on the rounded beams though so might not be helping here. Still, I am positive it is better to have them jump over a bar and maybe fall off then having to repair stacked bars constantly.

I usually only need 2 or 3 obstacles for me to have enough time to kill them even with a t1 pistol. Then I started watching youtubers like Capp00 and Jawoodle and started making tweaks such as using wedge tips for the obstacle and also opposite that so that when they jump, they fall most of the time. Once I started using that I only needed one obstacle to handle all but the most difficult hordes. It should be notied that all animals are not affected by the fall most of the time, so the dogs get through easily. Some will crawl into the side of the hatch and damage it, while being completely covered from you being able to hit them unless you deliberately take a hit walking up into them to look over the top of the hatch. As well, they can now just dive in the air and shoot through the 1x1 opening above the hatch.
