Brother, man...brother, man...bro...this was an absolutely great setup. I was struggling with horde nights. I initially set up a horde base in a grain tower, and it worked for a while, but I spent so much time repairing it. Your design took a lot of resources and time to set (initially went 5 high after reading comments, changed to 8 high), but, brother, when I finished and hit night 84, I barely got a scratch on me or the base. Now I can spend some time leveling up and questing and thinking about how to improve on the base.

The only thing I would do different is I would make it at least 12 blocks high, that way the zeds don't go into destroy everything mode when they fall and won't attack the base 99% of the time. Otherwise it's bangin' bro!

I've used that style of horde base since I saw you explain it many alphas ago. I don't usually have the middle pillar but it works ok without it. One thing I would recommend is turning sledgy 45 degrees so it's less likely to smash your gateway/murderhole-I think sledgy was responsible for most of the damage to it.

This is similar to my usual horde base, especially the block stairs, though I don't really do the AFK thing. My horde base isn't meant for me to go have a sandwich; it's meant to turn that horde into XP. The block jumping behavior was an incredibly powerful discovery to me those years ago. One thing I like to do is put vertical plates along the "bridge" so zeds have to keep stopping and jumping, giving you tons of time to shoot them. After all, what's the point of stockpiling all that ammo all week if not to take REVENGE on the horde by turning a few thousand rounds into a half dozen levelups?
It can be a good idea to put sledgy on a half block so he has to aim up a bit and break a few legs, adding to the crowd control. Also keeps him from setting off demo zombies on either side. I would attach some metal spikes to the wall of your hiding spot just opposite sledgy so when he does knock them off, they fall through spikes (being unable to actually climb them) and start bleeding.
I usually put bars as my roof so I can either shoot birds or place turrets for it but now I'm wondering if I should just make a roof of spikes? Maybe they dive in, get cut to shreds and fall right through so I can harvest them. Airborne bone delivery system!

One rule I learned is to not share Horde Night base designs because, if The Fun Pimps find out a good design, they will try to fix it so it doesn't work XD I've been building a base design since Alpha 17 that has worked all these years, and I've never shared it. So far, it still works great and is neither cheesy nor cheaty, but it's good for channeling them.
One thing I do for my horde base that can help you out here is to add plates around all structures at ground level. Plates help smooth the ground out for the AI pathfinding, preventing them from getting caught on uneven terrain.
Also, a note: A lot of RUclipsrs don't use turrets to their full advantage. I would love to see RUclipsrs use turrets-specifically gun turrets-as a main feature for Horde Night. Most replies I get from youtubers are, "It's boring to use turrets." I disagree; turrets are a key part of the game. It is a tower defense game, after all.

I do something similar in that I create a bit more of a maze with multiple jumps. I use truss blocks instead of solid blocks so I can shoot through the blocks. I use the sledge but make a hatch base if I can't find one. Super easy to build and easy to add additional tweaks for late game, like adding electrified fence right in front with the sledge, turrets and blade traps. You get the benefit of using ranged or melee super fun. I use the pole as you do, I was thinking about using the 0.5 pole, but really want to ensure the pathing stays the same. Thanks for your content!!

One thing I like doing is building a trench to the side where the sledge vaults the Zs off to (and sometimes buidling an 'outbuilding' that catches the and drop them into the ditch so they don't overshoot, and building a 2 block high cage reaching out out 6-10 blocks. This keeps the spiders from jumping over to you and any large Zs can't walk upright - both groups are forced to crawl to you making them even more vulnerable to the sledge and rendering the Demos largely moot.

I use something similar, but inspired by Capp. The path I have is single threaded blocks with periodic jump blocks along the way. To get up on the first tower, I have a path that goes six blocks to the left and then a jump step path that hooks back towards my base tower. It looks like a square fish hook. On the left side of my base tower I have a 2x2 opening that I can use throwables (Molotov's, pipe bombs and grenades) and ranged as they jump up the step path with their backs to me. When I'm more advanced, I switch to contact explosives, mostly arrows or bolts. Pipe bombs can bounce off the steps and do little damage. The entire path is covered with barbed wire to slow them even more. One other note is I use a second layer of blocks under the elevated portions of the path to make it more resistant to breakage. They might destroy a top block, but still have a way through.
My first sledgie goes next to the first tower on the right side of the path. As Capp said, you don't want to hit the demo's no-no button. When I get a second sledgie I can use, I move it three blocks closer to my tower. Again, it is on the right side. My tower door uses double hatches rather than scaffolding bars. Call it preference. There is a trigger plate in on the block just outside my tower base tied to a shotgun turret to the right two blocks. Anything that gets past my throwables and shooting on the jump steps and my two sledgies gets dispatch by the turret. Most of the time the only thing the shotgun turret shoots at are spider zombies who bypass the other defenses. They don't last long.
To plan for the potential of a path being knocked out somehow, I build a second path outside the first, separated by at least three spaces. Eventually, I create a whole additional set of towers and paths behind my base, but facing the other way. To keep the zombies off of that until I want them there, I leave a 2-block gap. I can put blocks in if I they destroy the first base approach, but have never had to use it.
As I said, this was inspired by a Capp base I saw in his Darkness Falls series. There might be more than one, but I'm thinking the series where he had his base near the trader and his back up location was a dilapidated house across the street. I've just modified the design to coincide with my play style. Clearly, this is a phased build and I was describing what would be an end game condition. Be prepared for some in your face action early on until you get at least one sledgie.

Nice design Capp but something I didn't see noted was that you shouldn't connect the block the sledge sits on with the entrance you use. later hordes will jump onto that block and beat their way through that door instead of the blocks. An iron door may deter them but a wooden one will not. Leave at least a 1 block gap between the block punchy sits on and the direct path to your entrance. Even batter, instead of solid blocks, disconnect the path by using two hatches. Orient them so that they open downwards and you can open them to cross and close them to break the path.

Solid base design! If you are facing day 7 and don't have cement yet, this can be done in cobble. You will want to double the pole walkways to make sure the path doesn't get broken between the platforms.
I use a design very close to this, and only do a few things differently. I put bars instead of blocks as the platform obstacles (8:44) so I can shoot thru them, and I add a pit with cobble ladders on the sides where they are falling. I dunno if the 11 block drop still counters the destroy area mode, but if nothing else it extends the return loop a bit more which can make for less congestion at the fighting position.
If you don't have a sledge turret you can add a trap door or door set horizontally and drop them when you want to. Just make sure you can target it properly and open it from your position thru the blocks you decide to use. I think you can do it thru the scaffolding ladder, but i have been using the bevel cube in my designs for so long I can't say for sure on that.

Very nice. I’ve been using a very simplified version of this base for a while. You can actually use hatches in place of the ladders and make a hatch corridor inside the base portion for added protection. Just be sure to put plates or bars on the top block so they can’t squeeze through. Also, I noticed you left the base only three blocks high. I do four so they can’t stack up and get on the base should the sledge turret fail.

I see a couple issues with this that could be easily improved upon. I would add one more stepping block, on each side, to the back of your Q-bert blocks (This would be right up against your 3x3 column, next to the 2 high step you already have in place, to aid those zombies coming back after falling off). Also, once your zombies fall off, they are going into destroy anything mode, this can be avoided if you are high enough and far enough away from them, which seems to be around 12 blocks high. This should stop them from attacking your supports and possibly taking down your whole run, since running as an AFK base, you are not actively terminating them if they start hitting on your supports. This will be crucial in the later stages. as the number of zombies is vastly increased. Another optional thing you can do for your 'barriers' along your run, use bars or scaffolding ladder block, this way you can shoot through them if you want to, for the experience. You can decide if you want the zombies to be able to climb the scaffolding ladder block or not, either way, it will slow their progress. And of course in later game stages, electrical lines will pause and damage them as well. Great video, had not thought of the Q-bert steps, as I usually use ramps to allow dogs, bears, and anything else up so I can get the XP. Thanks for the video.

  • @init000

Make it 12+ blocks tall (to prevent rage mode after the zombies fall down) and add upside down ramps above the fighting position to prevent zombies from piling up and reaching the roof. Also, replace the last Pillar Centered Side with a Pillar Centered Side 1/2 (Half) and it will ensure that only one zombie can be standing in front of your fighting position at once. Then it should be pretty much perfect.

As of right now I do not think this build works well anymore. Built it to the exact proportions shown in the video and the waves tend to attack the tower your standing in. Even tore it down and tried again and the mobs still attack the supporting blocks if they dont spawn in the direction of the ramp/stairs

Id make the base a bit taller, 8 or 9 blocks... this increases fall damage to the zombies, AND decreases the chance of rage mode.
Secondly, id put Upgraded Spike Traps At the bottom, where the Zombies Will land when they fall or get knocked off, And rather than a speed bump, on the center pillar, I'd go two blocks high to be at roughly head level, and put a blade trap... and maybe an electric Fence around the majority of the Base of the Rhird pillar, To make a semi-safe Reentry/Exit point, just in case...
You know, if that stuff is available.
I'm one to spec highly into construction, crafting, and mechanics... I usually leave the Zombie Killing Mostly to whoever I'm playing with at the time(also, I like bladed weapons, so I put points into that as well. And stealth. And various survival neccessities.)
And that was in older versions, when skill points were actually hard to obtain... In the new version, the dang magazines are a dime a dozen... so you get the levels needed WAY sooner.

The concept isn't bad but for late game you really need to build that base a lot taller to prevent zombies from going into destroy area mode, otherwise they will rip that whole base out from under you, either taking out the pillar that holds up the room you are standing in just after they fall or by destroying the stair case and removing their own path to get to you at which point they will all just focus on the pillar beneath you and you get the same result. Idk how high you have to build, some people in the comments here say it is like 14 blocks or 15 blocks. The sources that I rely on for information of the game told me it needs to be more like 21+ blocks high. In any case, building high enough to negate destroy area mode is crucial for any real AFK base in the late game.
