I had a guy buy the house up the street from me. He saw me loading a few guns in my trunk to go to the range and came up to me and requested I remove the guns from the neighborhood because he had a family and they made them feel threatened. So I really enjoy cleaning my guns in my driveway now.

I would tell him very politely that as long I am on my property and not threatening anyone, and its is none of his business what I am doing as long I am obeying the law.......he can now get off my lawn!

Yeah, if he was really threatened he would have hid under his bed instead of confronting you. That's what I'd say to anyone who claimed they were threatened by my gun ownership, then mention casually that if somebody did try to hurt the guy's family I'd do everything I could to intervene since he doesn't have the tools to protect them and I would feel a moral obligation to not just watch as he and his family become victims, seeing as I'm a good neighbor.

Wow. I had no idea.Georgias home target range rules were that restrictive. Florida is much more relaxed, not even required to be out of city limits if the neighborhood properties are over 1 acre. There are even exceptions to that rule.

I had a "feud" with a neighbor for over two years. The only neighbor we had for a few miles. He lived less than a quarter of a mile away. We would shoot and he would immediately start playing music as loud as possible and driving his local jacked up truck up and down the road peeling rubber up and down it. I would always throw my hands up like what's up? What the hell? It went on and on. Until one day we were leaving for a month long vacation eventually so I went and asked him about watching the property for us. I was like, man I know we have obviously had issues but could we bury this hatchet. He said sure just make sure to invite him over for the next cookout and shooting day. I was perplexed and asked, is that being smart-ass? He then explained he was always pissed because we never introduced ourselves and invited him over! The whole mess was because we were just rude in his eyes 👀

I had a issue with a neighbor here in Michigan that called the cops every single time I went out and shot. She was told several times that there was nothing that could be done because I had a proper backstop and was on agricultural zoned property and there is not a noise ordinance. Eventually the police got tired of wasting their time and told her if she called again she would be in trouble for wasting police resources.

The Don I have a serious issue with police saying “there is nothing we can do” as though there is some crime being committed but their hands are tied. This enforces the idea that the mere presence of the guns is some criminal act.

    • @ILikeToLaughAtYou
      @ILikeToLaughAtYou 5 лет назад +22

Sarah Watson I agree. I’ve thought that myself. I’d just flat out say that they called the Police for nothing, because there’s no crime being committed. Therefore, there’s nothing an officer can do about the caller’s sensitive feelings. I like to think of myself as a nice guy, and if there’s something that genuinely is hurting someone that I’m doing, then yeah, I’ll stop. Like a medical disorder, etc. all you have to do is be a decent human being and speak man-to-man. And if there’s a legitimate reason that I shouldn’t/ should avoid shooting for a certain reason, I’ll do what I can, but I’m not going to stop exercising my rights because you feel I’m hurting you in some way.

The Don Be an ambassador for our gun community. Acknowledge her fear of guns, and make some minimal effort at compromise-ie let’s say you work 9-5 everyday; then tell her you want to be a good neighbor so you won’t shoot until after 5 every day-something like that where you’re not really sacrificing much. Maybe work with your smaller calibers for a couple weeks so she gradually gets used to the sound.
We gun enthusiasts are our own worst enemies. We get all huffy and blow our opportunity to show gun-fearers that we are good people. I’ve done it myself and regret it. Life is good.

Where I'm from, in rural Virginia, if you fire a weapon and the neighbors a mile away hear it, they fire their guns too. Its sort of a way of saying hello. Calibers then begin the increase as if there's some sort of competition. Then a few days later you'll run into them and they'll say with a smile, "What are you doing making all the racket"? "Oh..You know... That coffee can was looking at me wrong again". lol

I got a story; not so much about a guy being anti-gun, more so just a guy that was anti fun.
About 10 years ago we had a neighbor that was just an absolute tw@t. Called the cops whenever there was an inkling of noise (when he moved from his previous subdivision, the subdivision actually threw a large party celebrating him leaving). Most commonly he would call when some buddies and I were out on the dirt bikes; at the time they were just small bore 4 stroke trail bikes that were VERY quiet. After the first time the cops were called, we decided to not ride after 4pm on weekdays, and only 12-3PM on weekends. Even with that, he still called.
A few months after that, I believe it was around some holiday (either 4th of July or Memorial Day) we were shooting blanks through our softball launcher. Essentially a very, very large potato cannon. Again, the cops were called. The first officer showed up; we explained what we had and what we were doing. He asked us to shoot it off, to which we happily obliged. He said "Holy shit! That thing is SWEET!!", got on the radio, called in two other township officers and said "You guys need to get over here and check this thing out!!!". That process repeated itself until there were 3 township officers, 2 sheriffs, and a state cop in our driveway, shooting the thing off and having a great time. I looked over to the house of the neighbor that made the initial call. Saw him walk outside, look at what was going on, hang his head, and walk back inside.
We haven't had an issue since.

I had a neighbor that i turned into a gun nut a few years ago. he was an anti gun guy most of his life until he met me lol but anyway, he had the same kind of situation where, he was robbed several times at gun point (of which he knew for a fact was the same guy because of a key chain lanyard that the guy had hanging out of his pocket). one day i caught up with him and he ended up telling me how he was robbed again not even a week before. so me being the generous person that i am (and knowing this guy wasn't necessarily made of money) i just told him, hey i have a little 22 that i never shoot and just sits in my closet and do you want to go to the range with me sometime and learn to shoot and ill just give you this 22 to have in case you need it? he agreed. so we went to the range and i taught him basic gun safety and how the gun works and how to aim and whatnot. so about a month later he was robbed by that same guy again, and luckily he heard the guy coming through the door and went and grabbed that little 22, met the guy in the hallway and pointed the gun at the robber. robber quickly fled the scene and no rounds were fired. ever since then this guy has been totally pro gun pro second amendment and has his own little arsenal of rifles and ammo. as far as i know he hasn't been robbed since.

An anti-gunner is nothing more than a fervent supporter of the 2A who hasn't been a victim of a crime yet or hasn't actually discovered how fun guns really are.
An old Army buddy of mine was the rarest of types: A conservative, pro-2A guy who had never fired a gun outside of the military. I took him to the range at let him shoot my 1300 Defender and Glock 21. He now has a small arsenal in his house. I let him shoot 7 rounds of light birdshot to get used to the feel of it, then had him load a 3-inch magnum buckshot round. Suffice it to say, the flash and recoil surprised him. Good times.

I live in a pro gun neighborhood. Everyone has lots that are 2-5 acres and have prior military experience. When one neighbor starts running his weapon, there will be 2-4 others running with their range bags and something new to shoot. I'm proud to say we have established a respect for one another far more than other neighbors experience. When we have a disagreement, ( usually about a football or basketball game ) it's halted right there. We haven't had any break-ins or murders in 30 years. I hope we are ready if that day comes.

I had my AR-15, a buddy had a m1 garand, another friend had a 12 gauge, another friend had a ruger 10/22, and another friend had a .17 hmr. Similar story: Years ago two of my friends rented a duplex in the city. Me being the only one who owned firearms, suggested multiple times that they each buy one for home protection. After some time, one friend bought a revolver from me, and the other purchased his own.
One day, one of them came home and heard something coming from upstairs. He grabbed his gun and proceeded to investigate. Upstairs he was confronted with an intruder pointing a gun at him, and my friend shot him in the heart at point blank range. It was also the first round, out of his first gun, the first time he ever shot.
Thank God he chose to defend himself. However, I do wish he had trained beforehand. Luckily everything worked out.
Thanks for the video, guys. God bless.

When I was 17 years old, I got into shooting for the first time. And during my senior year of high school, I was on a robotics team that treated me like scum. One day, I decided to talk to some team members about airsoft. However, a girl who claimed she liked me eavesdropped that conversation. She then decided to spread a violent rumor that I bought real machine guns and would take/use them on a school robotics trip to Chicago. My principal then confronted me the next day, interrogated me, and made me sign a statement against my will that it was all a hoax. To add insult to injury, the girl who spread the rumor got off scotch-free, and I didn't go on the trip. It was an embarrassing and frightening ordeal.

My brother and I have been competitive shooters and hunters in New York since the age of 12. When I was 16 and he was 15 he received a .17hmr rifle for his birthday. He wanted desperately to try it out but we didn't have anyone to go to the range with and we didn't have the land to shoot it on. Well, while I was playing some video games, he took his new rifle and shot it from the bathroom window that faced our back yard into a pile of dirt that we had from when our swimming pool was being put in. We have a fenced in back yard with nothing but woods for miles behind us. However, we were only 20 yards from the nearest houses on our sides and the law was that we had to be 500ft from the nearest inhabited structure. Our neighbor called the police. I noticed the police car in the driveway, heard the knock, and went to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, two female officers barged into my home with guns drawn shouting "back up, where's the gun!?!?" They had received a call of "shots fired." (it was a single shot, not much louder than a .22)
They rounded up my brother and I, I explained what had happened and that my brother disregarded my advice to him. They asked us to bring all of our "weapons" (knives and bb guns included) to the living room under their supervision to have a check on any threats. a few minutes late, about 12 firearms, 3 bb guns, and a couple hunting knives were in the living room. They asked where our parents were. My mother was at work at the hospital and my dad (divorced) was either at his house or at work. They wanted to know how and why we had so many guns so I brought out our Youth Shooting awards and newspaper articles about our local gun club. They gave my brother a warning and left.

The second or third time we were out there playing we heard sirens coming from down the road and sure enough 3 squad cars showed up and out popped about 5 officers with guns drawn yelling at us to put down our firearms (which we did before they even got there). Of course we had our hands on our heads and were kneeling down when they showed up and when they realized the guns were fake just started laughing at us and made us repaint the muzzles orange lol. Turned out this 85 year old neighbor I had was watching us and thought we were going to slaughter a bunch of cows. Ive just built a relationship with my neighbors and told em if they have an issue, I’d rather them call me than call the cops. I also do my best to follow noise ordinance and give them a heads up and an invite.
It probably also helps that I live in the hood and no one really wants the cops around.

In the state of PA, I can now legally buy any guy, whether it's a pistol or a long gun which is great but my family has threatened to cut me off if I buy a gun or even go to the range! I have no idea how to deal with this.

Hmmm, maybe start off small and get bigger? Example, start with paint ball and move toward small calibers or a pellet gun. Once you're out of the house it will not matter.
Are there any people they respect who own? Can you work out a sort of buddy system with an older adult who they respect to train you?

+cogsys cogent well see I've had pellet guns my whole life, starting with a Christmas gift at age 6 lol. It's just my family doesn't believe in me needing a gun. They're not un-Americans who hate guns it's just that they don't see a point. And to your point of a respected family friend, there's no one I can think of. My family are fishermen, not hunters so there's no one close that owns a gun, which is sad :(

If you want their approval, the thing is to show them you're responsible and safe with a firearm, but if you're 18 then honestly their approval doesn't matter and there's absolutely no reason for them to ever know you have a firearm if you're really that worried about their reaction. It's called concealed carry for a reason.

There's a weird mentality where nuisance becomes defined as anything unusual. For example, *just once* while staying at my folk's place recently, I heard two or three gun shots at least a half mile off in the woods. Each, just a very muted 'pop-crash', but it led to immediate grumbling that its "just not the place for that with all these houses" and that "people just have to make noise." I was flabbergasted. This, in a house feet from a state road with trucks speeding by periodically at all hours. Their lawn tractor and tiller are just fine of course, as is the sawmill down the road. But Billy Bob and his 30-06 need to be in the next county.

I'm late to the party here but story time. When me and my neighbor were about 12 and 13 we got into a big land dispute with a distant neighbor about land that wasn't even his. Me and my neighbor live on a main road just outside city limits, and behind his house is about 6 acres of forest, alot of it being bamboo, and his family owns about 150 yards into the forest with a clear and visible fence running through the property line. We had a great camp site set up out there and if you've been around bamboo you know it's a pain in the ass to keep maintained and you have to burn alot of it. And when it gets hot enough, the pressure inside will burst the bamboo and let out a firecracker sounding pop. Well this guy walked up to the privacy fence and told us we were trespassing.. we asked who he was because we were cool with the neighbor that owned the rest of the forest. He lived a block away in a neighborhood adjacent to the forest, owning none of the land, trespassed himself, leaned on the fence dividing the properties and told us we were trespassing and the popping was too loud. Long story short we politely told him to fuck off because there is no noise ordinance here. Behold about 15 minutes later 3 police cars show up, one has a riot sheild, and a female officer walks into the woods to ask what is going on. We told her what happened and she said they got a call for shots fired.. after a few minutes of talking, and the bamboo fire still popping behind us the whole thing was resolved and I'm not sure if he was jailed for filing a false police report, but a few weeks later we came out and popped a few .22 rounds down into the creek mud for shits and gigs. Never heard from the guy since

STORY----Melbourne Florida-----i was working at my job as a tire technician at a local shop, the other day i told my co-workers (one is from NJ and the other is from Michigan) that i was going to the shooting range and i asked if they wanted to go....they both looked at me wide-eyed and said "nah man shooting guns is bad" "oh i dont like guns" etc....i asked them why and one asked "when did you start shooting guns" i told them i was around 12 when i shot my first gun....then the guy from new jersey said "since you have been around guns your whole life it is easier for you to kill someone" ?!?!?! i said umm well no thats ridiculous just because i was raised around guns does not make me want to kill anyone....in fact, it would make me safer because, i know the safety procedures and proper techniques....then i asked him...."WHAT IS THE MURDER RATE IN NEW JERSEY AND MICHIGAN!??!?!?!" they didnt say anything back HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHA

      @General_Cap 8 лет назад +2

I mean - it's not like you can't get them anymore. It's just that if you do want them and keep them - you gotta pick up a lifetime occupation in firearm dealership. To own modern machine guns (& a couple of other NFA weapons) you have to be a FFL Dealer and get a Class 3 SOT License. Then, you can own any machine gun made after may 1986, but won't be able to sell them to or lend them to just anyone. Also, there are a lot of things to learn about before getting that license and being a FFL dealer. I've read that you just can't get a Class 3 license just for the sole purpose of having the privilege of owning a modern machine gun. Doing so can get you in a lot of trouble (Something along the lines of Tax Evasion). In other words, you can own modern machine guns - but it's more of a occupation / paid privilege than a right to posses them (also it costs a lot of money, you have to pay a 500$ tax every so often). I would like for machine guns to not be so complicated to own these days, but you can pretty much expect that nothing is going to change about their availability because of all the recent political movements to restrict the guns we are still allowed to have even further. (Also because machine guns are indeed a far more dangerous weapon that what we are usually allowed to have - it's probably for the best that not every person can run off and buy one.)

One good solution if you're going to have a big shoot is to offer to send the family that complains out to dinner and a movie, your treat.
"Hey So-and-so, we're planning to have a shooting party on the 22nd. We know the noise bothers you so what we'd like to do is all chip in and buy your family a night out. Dinner and a movie, on us, and we'll be done before you get home."
It'd be hard for them to complain about that, and if they turn you down and call the cops anyway, the cops won't be very sympathetic to their complaint when you explain what you offered them to resolve the situation ahead of time.

Unlawful to discharge a firearm within 50 yards of a public roadway, or 500 yards of a residence other than your own. Both are loosely enforced as long as your backstop is good and you aren't being stupid.

+Iraqveteran8888 I had read 500 feet on line.
      500 yards is a lot!!
My range will be long but not wide. My 34 acres is skinny. This sucks!

+Andrew Baker I can't find 500 yards anywhere in state law. It may be his county.

It varies by county I believe. The situation will always dictate. Wherever you are deciding to shoot, do yourself a favor and push up a berm as wide as you can afford, about 12-14 feet tall, and at least 14-20 feel deep at the base. Nobody is going to argue with a mound of dirt that big.

They're easily replaceable. . . just buy a small roll of screen and a screen tool at your local hardware store, pop out the spline, ensure the frame is square, place the screen over the frame, and roll the spline into there, one side, then the opposite side, then the adjacent side, then opposite again. Easy!

I like the thought of the asking the neighbor to come over and shoot maybe a burger or two. I guess I haven't thought of that but thank you

Love your guys' channel! Just bought my first gun (Maverick 88) a couple of days ago. Looking forward to becoming proficient with it and obtaining my concealed carry permit.

Reminds me of when I went out to my uncles place. He had recently bought a cannon, and me and my cousins were shooting guns and unloading the cannon into this large hill on his property. Eventually a cop car pulls up. The old sherrif walk up, takes one look at the cannon, and to quote him verbatim, "When where you going to let me fire that son of a bitch?"

Great show. I have a tip related to this topic: Always move firearms in a case. If you don't have a case, keep it slung. If you don't have a sling, install one. Carrying a rifle at port arms or something similar results in "guy with a gun" calls.

If I had a anti-gun neighbor and he pisses me off I would put a sign on my yard saying "my neighbors house is gun free, I will not protect them with my guns if they are being robbed."

Maybe try other things that might work better than tires? or maybe they are the best? It would be nice to have options.

@@lordjayguptill4800 A guy on RUclips who does alot of videos did a fairly scientific test and determined that shag carpeting absorbs almost twice as much sound as those expensive accoustic foam 'egg carton style' mats do. He hung some on the walls of his studio and it improved the sound quality dramatically. So shoot through a long cardboard box lined with carpeting. Or a roll of carpet with the shag facing in. Or a sheet of carpet over a row of tires...be creative.

We have long time neighbors that know but also a new neighbor that bought the small farm across from us. They haven't complained yet so I think they're old school like us. There are also neighbors over the hills that shoot that I haven't met yet. I love them.
Anyway, I'm thinking of making a tire suppressor thing just to be courteous. But not too quickly. ;)

I know of people who were in a similar situation. They would simply notify the cops before they would begin shooting, and the cops would then notify the neighbors that legal shooting is going on if they called.
