This lens is so bad in auto focus even after the latest november firmware. Especially in continuous auto focus. It focuses slightly better in single auto focus. None of my sony lens misses focus like this lens. I want to love this lens so much but after about half my images came out blurry, I don't even want to look at it.
just bought mine a few days ago and am really glad i got it instead of the Zeiss! the Zeiss is a monster , but in my opinion , this lens for the price is just as amazing ! also, if you're thinking about purchasing this lens , do not pay more for that Rokinon 35mm 1.4 af. it is the same exact lens as the Samyang . same company . great review by the way !
Hi John, I also have this lens and have had the same autofocus issue at times although rarely. Turning the camera off and back on fixes this. However I have ordered a Samyang lens docking station and will be upgrading the lens firmware to version 0.2. May I ask which firmware you are reviewing this lens on. Thanks and great video love your work
Thank you! Yes I was using this lens with the latest firmware V0.2. The AF issues weren't common when I was using it but it did happen but if its an improvement from the previous firmware its still good :)
Thank you for your response John :) Since the update it has given me noticeably less auto focusing issues. Hopefully Samyang will continue to support this lens to iron out any other bugs. I'm coming from a Panasonic LX100 so cameras and lenses are still very new to me. I made a travel video of the Domincan Republic on my channel which I am sort of proud of but know I can do much more now. I'm excited to take my A7 III to film a travel video in Singapore later this year :) I see you have been before which inspired me to go there.
I like the loose focus ring, quick and easy transitions and i only need to use my index finger to turn it, every other lens i have requires a 2 finger pinch to turn the focus ring otherwise my finger slips
I sold the 35f2.8 for the samyang 35mm f1.4 and wished i hadn't, the first copy was terrible so i returned it, the second copy just wasn't reliable in focusing at times so i eventually returned that copy too, now I have the sigma 35mm f1.4 for sony and so far it's been superb, wish sony would make a 35mm f1.8 small and good value like they did with the 85mm
I don't know why everyone is not complaining about this lens. Pretty much all the reviews are saying it's a great lens for the money. My lens misses focus like half the time even after the latest firmware. So frustrating.
I am using this lens with the Sony A7 III and I have no issues with focussing at all. It is a little less fast as my Sony FE 85 F1.8. I am pretty happy with it.
I'm still thinking going for the Sony-Zeiss FE 35 f1.4. Was considering the Samyang 35mm, as you mentioned there's problems with AF. I can't take risks with it in weddings photography.
There's a firmware update for this very lens that improves autofocus in low light. I've read around and many users claim that the autofocus is much faster regardless of lighting conditions. Problem is you will need to buy a docking station which isn't exactly cheap
Just received my lens docking station today and updated to v0.2. Can confirm that autofocus is a lot faster than before. The autofocus noise generated from the lens is more erratic on continuous autofocus which is a given as it is now working harder and faster. Not too loud and isn't a problem at all for still photography. In terms of cost even with the lens station taken into account it is still much cheaper than the Sony Zeiss FE 35 1.4
Awesome review as always. Need your advice -- I currently only have the zeiss 35mm f1.4 lens but am thinking of the zeiss 35mm f2.8 as well because it's so small. I travel a lot and 35mm is my go to and only focal length. Question: Do you think I should still get the f2.8?
I probably would. Its such a big difference in size and weight. The 35mm F2.8 really doesn't weigh that much but if it fits within your budget, why not :)
Eeekk! Really? I haven't experienced any of that actually. Other than that issue with the jittering with the lens that was it but that hasn't happened since. Have you updated the lens firmware for it?
I got one at an incredible price just to re sell it and do some bucks.... but Beside the size.... I like it and will keep it( I update v2). Since I also have the voigtlander 40mm 1.2 vm with techart pro , when I want a small package I take that last combo. The voigtlander by the way at 1.4 has a smother bockeh
Terrible review not even finding out about the AF and firmware upgrade nor a comparison to the Zeiss which will show how much sharper than the Zeiss wide open away from the center where the Zeiss Sharpness dies fast away from the center
Thanks for the feedback. I thought I mentioned it was with the latest firmware but I perhaps didn't. I made the video based on my experiences with V0.2 and the video wasn't a comparison to the Zeiss with image quality. Didn't want to make the video too long :)
Who cares if the zeiss isn't as sharp wide open, it's most definitely sharp enough if you have a good copy. It also renders better than the samyang , doesn't have funky colors/ flaring while having better AF and video capabilities.
This lens was used with the latest firmware - V0.2
When my camera is low battery it also misses focus when using the speed boster. maybe its a similar issue.
Hmmm that's interesting that it does that.

I love this lens. After the V02 update the AF is much better in low light (a7ii)
AF on a7ii was all I wanted to know in relation to this lens and thanks for your input.
Autofocus for video or photos? What focus mide and focus area did you use?
Awesome good review of Samyang lens. Thx for having a good effort of Samyang lens.
You are welcome! Happy to help out :)
the photo at 3:57 is actually GREAT!
Thank you! :)
I can not believe that this lense is two times the size of the fujinon xf35mm 1.4. Incredible!
it lets in twice as much light too....
fuji xf35mm is apsc designed lens
NOT!. f/1.4 is f/1.4 no matter which camera you're using.
@@kevinrtres You are wrong, specially designed for full frame lens produces more light transition and appropriate shallow a dept of field

I will go for the Loxia 35mm.f/2, and thanks for this review!
Love the loxias! You're welcome :)
Great review John! Nice captures
Thanks man! :)

The BroCasters If any can find one in stock. Otherwise it just adding to the cost.

Brett Harris adding to the cost is still way cheaper than others like Zeiss and absolutely destroys the Zeiss in sharpness and ca control
shaolin95 agreed
Finally...been wondering when u r going to upload a new video 😊
Hoping I can get back to my regular schedule hehe
Hi, is the focus engine noise heard in photos?
Samyang 35mm 1.4 Vs Sony 35mm f 1.8 FE, Wich one would you recommend and why?
Can you do a comparison between Sigma 35mm vs Samyang 35mm 1.4?
I'll see what I can do but I need to wait for the Sigma 35mm to be released here in Aus.
It was a really tough choice for me but my Sigma 35 1.4 arrived this week and in fairness it is pretty awesome! Great video man!
Oh nice! Did you get it in the FE mount? I'm keen to see how well it does.
@@JohnSisonPhotography ah just saw this now man yeah it's FE mount. Check out some images on Insta: joey_wan_kenobi most taken with the 35.

Which firmware are you on on the Samyang? Samyang released a new firmware update that addresses some AF issues in low light
It was the latest firmware, V0.2. I guess there is still work to be done =.)
Can you compare image comparison between 35 1.4 vs samyang 2.8 (AF low light, bokeh) . Thanks
I'll let you know if I can but thanks for the suggestion!
As a travel or all round lens for the Sony A7R3 what lens would you recommend? 24-70 zoom or a prime?
For travel, I've really liked the 35mm focal length. I'd go with a prime for sure these days.
Canon sx430 or canon sx730 point and shoot which is better for trekking on mountain.
I'd go with the SX730.
Hi. Do you never experienced some camera freezing when using this lens? It happens on my A7 III. :/
Eeekk! Really? I haven't experienced any of that actually. Other than that issue with the jittering with the lens that was it but that hasn't happened since. Have you updated the lens firmware for it?
What focus mode and focuse area did you use for video? My lense like always hunting the focus when i use for video
It depends what I'm filming. I use either wide or centre in AF-S or AF-C. It also depends on the camera you're using too.
@@JohnSisonPhotography thanks for the explanation
hi john sison, straight from the box - do i need to manually update this lens manually? how?
I would recommend you do because more than likely the firmware is not updated.. There is a link in the description to get the dock for this lens.
it cant be updated directly using the a7iii? like the tamron 28-75
Unfortunately no.
Thanks for the video, just wondering if you tested the eye auto feature? Thanks
Eye AF worked perfectly! :)
John Sison cheers thanks 👍
Where were u bro...its been a very loooooooong time.?
So long! Personal and work life got in the way :)
Review rx100 mark 6?
Yep! It'll happen soon :)
Is it v2 or the obsolete v1 firmware ?
I'm sure it's the v1 version as he has had autofocus issues
V2 :)
V4 better ?
It can zoom
No zoom on this lens. Its a fixed focal length.

This lens is huge...rather defeats the point of having a mirror less CSC! I’d rather have the f2.8 lens and up the iso....

you need a samyang dock for firmware update. Not available in many place
