I originally bought an A7ii with the Sony 28mm f2 lens. Although good I traded that lens in as for me the Samyang 35 was more suited to walk-around photography. A very compact, light weight combo. Photos are sharp and good colour straight from camera. Allways good to watch your reviews, keep them coming
I have both this lens and the Zeiss 35mm and AF is the same in both. Zeiss would refuse to focus on the same areas I was testing in low light. But one thing I don't think you mentioned is that Samyang lens is quite noisy when focusing. Zeiss is dead silent. For video you would need to use external mike if you want to shoot with Samyang. Why do you think Zeiss is more weather proof? I have not seen any water protection rings on my Zeiss.
Thanks for the review John. I had seen this video before buying the lens but was having second thoughts whether I should have got the sony. Watching this video reconfirmed that my purchase is right.
Best natural travel lens. So compact and high quality. I used to have the F1.4 but you seriously don’t need it with the a7rii unless you wanna carry a huge lens around just for that cinematic look. Just crank the iso and shutter speed the a7rii can take it and you get so much more easy and natural pictures this way coz it’s so light and unobtrusive
@@JohnSisonPhotography hi, great video, i have the A7rii, you mentioned vignetting, is this normal with this lens? I dont really want to have to fix this on Photoshop but i love the small compact size of the lens, i tend to take deadpan photos of buildings, so i need the whole image to be sharp, straight and in focus without any bokeh effects, vignetting or curving. I tend not to use the zoom as i like natural, normal shots, is this lens worth me getting? I'm looking to produce large prints of front of buildings. A0+size at least. Please advise as I'm getting various mixed advice from not so good photographers . Thank you, Chris
Overall, very light, compact, great all walk around lens to have all the time. But I was actually a little bit disappointed with how cheap it feels in the hand. But that's probably because the lens is so light, and I am used to having bit of a bulk with my lenses. That said, that might be a plus for many people, as one of the biggest reason why people go for mirrorless is for its compactness and portability. Lastly, in low light situations, the lens does hunt around to achieve AF, and focusing does make bit of a noice, and it might not be an ideal lens for video.
photographerjonathan those are two different lenses. You might as well ask how it compares to 50mm lens. Sony F2 is not very sharp and is one of Sony's early designs, so AF is not as good as modern Sony glass. If you want really good (and expensive) lens in 24-28mm range, try Zeiss 25mm f2 or the excellent new Sony 24 f1.4 G master. For budget you can buy Samyang 25 f2.8 which is quite similar in quality to this 35 cousin.
I'll shoot this one with a preset limit on Auto ISO at f5.6-8 for most pix on my a7r3 since its two native ISO ranges have proven to be enormously flexible. Landscapes and still objects will be tripod shot at ISO 100 or thereabouts.
At 1:55 the comparison between Sony Zeiss and Rokinon isn't acurate. The Samyang/Rokinon lens has an obvious thicker back lens cap and the lens looks taller than it really is. It would be better both lenses to be compared without back lens caps.
Good job John, these cheaper lenses enhances the Sony line-up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hey, got your hands on the A7III yet? I pre-Ordered, would love to get your validation on that camera
WOW Just subbed to you. Wish I found you earlier. I love Samyang Glass And Hope I can get another lens soon. I have the Sony a6300 and the Samyang 16mm F2.0. I would love to see more AF pancakes. Especially for APS-C Maybe a 16 and 35mm.
Thanks for the support! I'd love for samyang to make new AF pancake lenses, even for APSC cause we all know we need those sort of lenses. The 35mm f2.8 is just so easy to take around with me while travelling.
I would give anything to travel more xD. I got to go to California last year and it was kinda awkward using my Clunky 16mm F2 to shoot out the plane window. Would have been so nice to have a few pancakes.
Hi John, thanks for your videos, I have a question: if you had to buy one of these two lenses, which would you choose, Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN or Samyang 35mm F2.8 and why? I've a Sony a6000
skbats Really? Have you seen Sony Zeiss 35mm lens? It's ugly as heck. Samyang uses newer plastics and more modern design, so purely aestetically it is a better looking lens. Not to mention it is quite a bit smaller and 33% lighter then Zeiss equivalent.

hi did u test it AF on video? how is the AF speed going? a7ii prone to have slow AF on video mode

I have this lens and I use it with my Sony a7ii, works great and I absolutely love it!!! Highly recommend it

love the outtakes mate, and of course your reviews...

This is probably one of my most favourite travel lenses. So fun to shoot with and its just simple.
good point about the size, you can buy a small case just for this combination and take it everythere^^
i bought it for travel and love it!
Such a good lens! Good to hear that you love it!

Like the blooper reel !
looks like a great lens, John. Great review.
Thanks Colin! :)
Great review! I’ve ordered the lens!
Awesome! Enjoy your new lens! :)
How does it compare to the Sony 28 f2

Dima Habenko Sony 28mm f/2.0 is one of the fastest focusing lenses on Sony. It is blazing fast.
Outtakes were hilarious. You were actually blown away by this lens! 😂
There were a lot of random moments! I really like the lens. I actually rate this one over the Samyang 24mm F2.8.
Adding this to my wish list!
Dude, where have you been? Great to see you back. Great review.
Yep! Had to take a little social media break =.P
Hey John Bro..Welcome home.
Thanks man! :P
Cool work J, you're my " go to Guy," thanks
Thanks for the Review!

That sounds like a good way to shoot for everyday shots. I tend to stop down a lot unless I'm going for a particular shot.
Great little lens, but I am worried about the AF performance and its noisy motor.....
Autofocus on this lens is very fast and the motor is as silent as a whisper. So don't worry about that.
Great review.
How is the autofocus in video mode?

hello good to see you again
Hello good to have you drop by!
John Sison 👍👍👍👍😊
I have an a7rII. should I buy this lens for travelling or buy an used x100s for the same price instead?
Have you been able to compare this lens with the Sony 35mm F1.8? I am quite pleased with the latter although it is about $100 US more expensive.
I haven't compared these two lenses directly but I do like the fact the 35mm F1.8 has stabilisation built into it.
Roald Euller sorry guys?... sony 35 mm 1.8???
I think they are referring to the ASP-C version which doesn't do full frame shooters any good. The sony FE version is almost 1 grand.
Do you also hear the AF noise when recording video? Also if I turn it to MF and turn the focusing ring I can hear some noise. Is that normal?
It is focus by wire, isn´t it? So when you turn the focusing ring you are just controlling the autofocus motors.
Isnt the autofocus noise loud?
I didn't find it loud at all actually.
Two thumbs up Samyang. :)
Good job John, these cheaper lenses enhances the Sony line-up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hey, got your hands on the A7III yet? I pre-Ordered, would love to get your validation on that camera
Thanks Rick! Yeah I've played around with one already. I love it! Its an amazing camera that is supposedly the 'basic model' out of the A7 range
How does the sharpness compare to the zeiss 35 f2.8
I would say its just as good as the Zeiss 35mm F2.8 which makes it a very good choice for anyone on a budget.
How was the AF performing in video? Was the focus hunting a lot?
It wasn't hunting but it was so slow on the a7sii. On the A7rii and a9 it was much better so it definitely depends on which camera you're using.
I just bought this lens and the hood is very loose. It doesn't get locked when screwed. Is that normal or my hood is not right? Thanks for your review
Hmm the hood I have with it is pretty secure actually.
wow u came to singapore!
Yeah I was there earlier in the year. Had an awesome time while I was there :D

I would choose Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS because it's stabilized, if you had the 6500 then the sigma would be the choice
were u in singapore?
Yeah I was in Singapore :)
24 or 35 for travel?
I would probably go with the 35mm
Try the 35mm 1.4 rokinon/samyang fa pleaseee!!!!
Its coming soon! :)
U have 35k follower.. please bring model to shoot next time
I'll see what I can do :)
Ive liked the video. Im showing some love baby!!!!
WOOT WOOT!! 🎉🎉🎉 Thanks for showing some love!

Unfortunately not as sexy looking as the zeiss equivalent
A third of the price
How shallow are you, really? Thanks for making me laugh....At you, not with you.
Pervert! Lol....

I find having the extra money for my next lens pretty sexy
kebanyakan gaya yg bwa acyg nge reviewnya, bukan nunjukin hasil yg banyaak wkwkw
Yeah of course! :)
Wwkw lucubanget nih
hi john , what if im using it on A7II is it still a good lens in terms of autofocusing?
