Sigma 30mm f1.4 was my first lens if I could do it all over again I’d consider the sigma 56mm but I’d be too limited with the focal length...so ima stick with the 30mm 😂
I scored a used copy off of eBay for 250 bucks. And I couldn’t be more happier with this lens. I use it on my Sony a7riv and it is truly one hell of a sharp lens. It’s totally silent for video work. I was thinking about upgrading to the new Sony 35 mm GM but I feel there is no need with this lens. It’s fast it don’t hunt around. I would’ve paid $1000 for this lens is that good. But I got it for dirt cheap. Great video glad I found your channel
Wow!! That is a great deal! My copy is suuuper noisy so can't use it for video that much. And it does hunt still. It is pretty much lens lottery and sounds like you got a great copy.
@@azvisuals Yeah I thought for sure buying it used it was gonna be a dud. It does make a tiny bit of noise during video but you can’t hear it in the video. It’s that quiet. But you can hear a little bit. Yeah I am truly impressed with this lens is my deal of the year. I’ve heard numerous people say they got A bad copy. They returned it and got another one and it worked fine then. But for my needs I do mostly Portraits I couldn’t be more happier with it
@@paulneedham9885 you know after I posted that a couple years ago I really didn’t mess around with video. Just taking photos, but when I started dabbling with videography did notice there is some noise coming out of that lens nothing serious, but I moved my shotgun microphone over to my grip handle on the side of the cage and it doesn’t pick up the little bit of chirping it does. I used to mount it right on the cage for the camera and it was millimeters away from the lens itself and that’s when I first noticed it does make some noise.
I have A6000 still with kitlens. So now I'm waiting for good price for sigma 30 1.4. I watched a lot videos about lenses. So i think it will be the best option price performance.
I used to shoot Nikon but switched to Sony after I wanted more lightweight gear for travel. My first camera from Sony was a6000 and then the original a7! Never looked back since

Would you recommend this for filmmaking? Is AF fast for videos?
What lens would you recommend for an APS-C camera? I have a sony a6000 with a kit lens and I'm looking for a new portrait lens. Any suggestions would help!
You can use this lens for apsc. It's a bit heavy but the good thing is in the future when you want to upgrade to full frame, you don't need to buy a new lens. Or look into sigma 30mm f1.4 for apsc that one should be cheaper!
@@azvisuals Ah okay! I thought it was only for full frame. Guess I should've researched it some more. :) Thank you so much! I really enjoy your videos! I loved your photowalk with the Sony a6000 in NY! Hope to see some more in the future!
@@quetzalcuber thanks! I would look into the sigma more since it is smaller and would balance better on the a6000. I don't have the cam right now but plan make more videos with it when I get it back!
I just bought this and I think my next one will be the samyang 85mm. I have a cropped sensor Sony, so the 35 will become a 50 but I truly do love the 50 focal length. I'm just afraid of the firmware version I get. You have to buy a lens station to update the firmware which is kind of dumb in my opinion. Do you have it? It's kind of weird cause I would just use it once and never need it again. Also can you tell which firmware version you have in camera? It's such a weird situation
Yes the lens station is weird but i think my firmware is the original. I bought the lens years ago before they updated the firmware. Af could be improved but for this price I think it's fine!
@@azvisuals i just dont notice the difference in 1.4 and 1.8 if it's for a stop of light modern mirrorless have pretty good dynamic range. But bpkeh just dont notice it or maybe im not infected with GAS 😂😂
What was your first lens? If you could do it again, what lens would you buy instead? I'm curious to know!
Sigma 30mm f1.4 was my first lens if I could do it all over again I’d consider the sigma 56mm but I’d be too limited with the focal length...so ima stick with the 30mm 😂
@@Schoolofshots1 nice!! I think you're right. The 56 will be too tight for a lot of compositions but having both would be the perfect pair 😊
I got the 50mm 1.8 with my a6000, but I cant any other lenses because they're very expensive lol
@@Bitterbal05 you can look into the sigma lenses for APSC they are cheaper than the sony lenses!
@@azvisuals wow, didn’t know that! Thank you for the advice!

I totally recommend to update the firmware. It improves dramatically the autofocus performance. It's essential to do it!
Hey man, thinking of getting this for my A9. How would I update the firmware? When was the fw released?
I found the perfect lens for me appreciate the video.
Wow thanks for the comment this made my day! I'm glad to help out. A 35mm 1.4 is a perfect lens for pretty much any scenario!

Yeah I agree with you. I think the sigma 30 1.4 will be the one to get!
So helpful ! Thank you!
Thanks for the support! 🙏🙏
Great video! Any thoughts on other budget lenses?
Thanks! Look into other lenses from samyang/rokinon, sigma, tamron, and vultrox. Third party lenses are a better value than the native sony ones!
Can u make a video on how u became a sony shooter?

Hi, I also have such a lens, is it a rule to hear the autofocus engine when taking photos?
Yes the AF motor can be heard clicking!
have you updated it to version 4, I tested with latest version the focus is more silent
No unfortunately I don't have access to the dock for updates. I believe mine is still on the original firmware :(

Get the Sigma Trio for crop. 16, 30, and 56. All 1.4 lenses. Or, for portability, get the Tamron 17-70 2.8
with wich camera do you film yourself ?
A7iii or A7RIV, I use both
Nice Vide. How much mm is this on a APS-C.
Thanks! Roughly 50mm on APSC

The AF is pretty poor for video, but my lens is on firmware 1.0 so maybe the newer lenses have updated firmware that I can't test

Look into sigma lenses for APSC those are pretty budget friendly and still good quality. The 30 1.4 is close enough to 35mm!
3:52 - correction -> LESS depth of field
sony a7r3 with samyang 35mm f1.4
i dont know for the price just get the sony 35 1.8 used
Yep good point! Just depends on if you really want/need the 1.4 or not. The 35 1.8 is smaller and lighter.

1.8 vs 1.4 35mm
The beauty of the Samyang 35 1.4 is that you get the 1.4 look and performance, for the price of the 1.8!
