Now if you’re just starting out in the world of Destiny, then there’s gonna be A LOT you’ve missed out on from year 1. Lucky for you, our orientation here is gonna fill you in on all the experiences you missed out on and get you up to speed - plus, we’ll show you what you can expect going forward.
Men before you would play this game for hours upon hours chasing after these things and more, only to be let down time and time again. Some day soon, you’ll have your own white whale you’ll be chasing after, all while praying to RNGesus not to be let down - which you will be. You’ll do the same things over and over and over, just hoping to get that one drop you want, only to be let down again and again and again. You’ll swear you’ll never play again - but you will. It’s like a finger flick to the balls, the pain is sharp but it fades with time… - and you’ll be back… they always come back.
Look around you newbies. This is your fireteam. You will play with them again and again - doing the same shit. again and again... They’ll become MORE than just your teammates - they’ll become your friends - You’re going to talk about life, about school, about work, about the world and things you’re going through. You’re going to talk about strategy, about wiping, about cheesing - and reviving, and NOT Dying… and in the end, THEY will be the reason why you even play the game anymore.
You will love and hate this game all at the same time. Hell, you may even delete it off your system in a fit of rage - only to reinstall it 10 minutes later after jonesing for some destiny with your friends like someone on crack looking for their next fix. That’s why people call it crackstiny.
See, Destiny is not about the story. It’s not about the multiplayer. It’s not about missions, or strikes, or raids, or even the loot you chase after and never get until you buy some “hand me downs” from Xur. It’s not even about all the flaws people love to mention or constantly complain about. Destiny is about the experiences and the fun you’re about to have with your friends while doing all those different things and more.
So as you can see guardians, there is a LOT that you missed out on in year 1. And that doesn’t even cover everything that you missed out on… but we don’t have all day to sit around and talk about the past.
Year 2 is here - and it’s time for YOU to go out there and create your own stories you’ll tell the newbies who come after you.

I was 14 years old when I started playing Destiny with some friends at school. I still remember the people that helped me do my first Vault of Glass, Crota's End. Rushing to get home from school to do the weekly nightfall with my buddies or staying up late to do Crota's Hardmode on release. I am 19 now, wish I could go back to the simpler times.

I was 9 when I started lol. That was the game that I got with the ps4. I miss playing it.
Easier times back then I was a similar age when I played it and it was the perfect timing really I was young and didn’t have a lot going on,school was much easier and didn’t require as much studying and I had so much free time I’d love to go back to those times even just for an hour

All the ways we've grown and the things we've lost along the way. The destiny universe has been with me through it all. I only hope I can see it hit the finishing line.

90) Cannot track bounties.
91) Earn 9000 XP without dying bounty cannot be completed by turning in other bounties.
92) Xur accepted Motes of Light as payment for engrams.

STORY TIME bout my life with Destiny..
When the beta came out i was barely 17. Played the shit out of it. Would bring my game to my girlfriends house to play it that i was with already a year.
When it released i played the shit out of it senior year of highschool. Class of 2015 ✌
My first year of college in 2015-2016 i actually bought the ttk dlc cause im a legacy player on ps3. Never bothered to upgrade and didn't because of the time i put in this game. My still girlfriend at the time finally gave in and made a warlock but never played.
End of 2017 she finally began playing it and she was hooked like crack to it. Loved seeing her play and enjoy a passion of mine but got sick of her making so many noob mistakes and playing slowly. But i understood why she doesnt really play. Took her 6 months to get to level 40 😂😂😂
And now.. End of December of 2018 almost 2019 now. Im not with that girl anymore recently. Ended a 5 year relationship. However I still play this game very often on my ps3.. Even her warlock to max light. Its crazy over the years from being a noob and not knowing how to do something to knowing everything the game offers. Being the leader of raids. Finding new players and experienced ones like myself. Not many of us around.
Hearing this music makes me go through many memories and the times i lived in. This game brings much happiness yet so much sorrow when i hear this music play.

I bought all the dlc except one dlc because my friend bought it and game shared it to me, and I wanted to buy the latest dlc but it said I need to own the previous dlc to purchase the new one, so guess what? I had to buy the WHOLE digital destiny collection pack for 100$ just for the 20$ dlc that’s inside it, but at least I know I own the digital copy because I lost my destiny hard copy

This was beautiful. Destiny Year 1 is without question the most frustrating yet fun time I've ever had playing a video game. Wouldn't give away my 1000+ hours for anything.

I remember playing the alpha and beta during elementary school. I’m in high school now, I’ll never forget D1 and the happiness and obsesion it brought. 😔 least i got the ghorn year one 😂
This was a trip down memory lane, Destiny 1 is where I met a lot of friends who I still play with all these years later, I am still thankful that a long time ago a friend of mine invited me to a raid randomly and asked if I wanted to join, and I did, and now all 6 of us still play games regularly and have even met up in real life a few times. I really miss D1, and I am eternally grateful for all the memories it made.

Been a guardian since day one and I'm sad to say that I will not remember Year 2 with nearly as much masochistic fondness as I did Year 1. Whatever spirit the game had for me started to fade 3 months into The Taken King. I still play the game on a regular basis, but there's just something missing. There's no fervor or passion in it.

I agree. Since year 2 came out destiny has seemed to lose its "magic" and charm for me I guess I could put it. I'm not sure specifically what it is but it just doesn't feel the same anymore. Don't get me wrong, destiny is fun but it just lost that wonder and childish excitement I had from logging on in year one
+MachoTaco456 Gjallarhorn, not having the Gjallarhorn grind or having people in awe of the thing takes away from the magic. It might've been a damn near mandatory weapon during raids and nightfalls (unless you had a maxed ice breaker), but it was the best damn thing about year one, I wish they never woulda made Xur sell it and I wish they woulda kept it in year 2

Pretty sure its The Warmind or The Last Array, both epic tracks from the beta soubdtrack but sadly bungie renamed them at some point. Beta doesn't have anything like the black garden final boss but still Ocean of Storms was the 1st tune you heard when you grabbed your trusty Khostov grey AR and started on your first fallen kills and it played on your first trip to the moon.
I remember watching this video not long after it came out back in 2015. 7 years man. Doesn't feel like more than a year ago. Time flies.
Watching this hit me hard. I just realized that for many people this wasn’t just a game, but a place that forged some of the best times and friendships I’ve ever had my entire life. I genuinely miss the grind and pleasure of getting something like the original thorn, that feeling just can’t be replaced or replicated. As bad as it sounds, this was my childhood and to be honest, I’m not ashamed of that.

I actually teared up a bit, now I want to go back in time to the launch of Destiny and experience all of this again, and yes, I mean all of it, even the lag, the glitches, the grinding, and yes, even that stingy blue bastard still holds a place in my heart, I know It was only a year but it felt like so much longer. One of my best moments of Year 1 has to be actually what happened recently. It is something I will remember forever from Destiny. While I vaguely remember my first Raid completions, what I will remember is this. On Monday (September 7th), I led a fireteam consisting of two guys from LFG on a Skolas run, at this point I needed to complete the Year 1 triumphs, so I needed a team), once we all got in the party, we all found out we all needed to beat this for our triumphs thing. It was all we needed. All of us just had to beat Skolas, and then that was it. Hopefully those guys are reading this. These guys were some of the best Destiny Guardians I have ever met. We all were able to communicate, coordinate, and just do everything perfectly. We made it through the all the Rounds, (Save for cabal, fck the cabal) in one try. When we got to Skolas, we failed once due to my mistake of the Essence. But no matter, we persevered. So our second try at Skolas himself....
It was like nothing I have ever done before. We just blasted through it. It was amazing. The feeling of teamwork, companionship, and just the overall fun we all had in what is normally so frustrating to beat, it was phenomenal. And guess what happened. We crushed the Kell of Kells. Not only that, but this Virgin team won against Skolas in an exact time of 60:22. We all got elder ciphers, we all landed the last hit, we all finished the Triumphs. The only thing that would have made that better would have been that we all got exotics from the chest. This one Skolas run, it showed me what Destiny is about. Being smart, communicating with you team, having Gjallerhorn (haha), having a good team, and mostly, having fun and making these experiences. And if my fireteam is reading this, Dray, Phantom, thank you for letting me have one of the greatest experiences in Year one for me.
But as for Year Two.

I miss year 1 so much. Back when destiny was a hunk of shit on a good day. I miss the endless grind for a gun or exotic just for it to be the biggest disappointment. And if the gun didn't suck, it immediately got nerf'd and then it was unusable. I remember funding out about the Hawkmoon and damn near busting in my pants, only to find out that it was a PlayStation exclusive. And then I'd question every choice I'd ever made in my entire life because I thought it was a good idea to get an Xbox. this game was truly amazing. even now in the new year of 2024, i look back at the times i had playing it. i was 15 when the game came out. i made so many great friends because of it. ran raids even after i collected the loot for the week just because i always had so much fun running them. i've played destiny 2, tried so hard to love it like i loved destiny 1 but i think i just have to accept that the times of that age are gone but im forever grateful for them. cheers to all my d1 vets and cheers to all the friends i got to meet that i no longer speak with that i made playing this wonderful game. i plan on coming back to this video for years to come. really does bring a tear to the eye remembering the good times we made.

Exactly. I just look at my 170 Gjallarhorn hoping someday the legend will be reborn, but I I don't know if the day will come. Seeing my worn out year one exotics sitting in a kiosk, my fatebringer and black hammer destroyed and dismantled. I remember when we had to farm day to night in VoG and CE hoping for that thing we've been chasing, hoping RNGesus gave luck in the nightfall. I remember way back when everyone wanted legendaries or having that certain exotic made you a god. Good times, but the when TTK came out, all the memories were shattered and we were all off to start a new adventure against oryx. Now that most people are maxed out like me, we have to sit and wait for September to see what the Rise of Iron will bring.

I've been playing Destiny since release day, but soon after House of Wolves, when I finaly got my G-horn, my Thorn and every other exotic I wanted, had reached level 34 and Arkham Knight was just around the corner, I put the game down and said "that was it, I have been playing this game for hundreds of hours now, have done everything over and over and over again, but I'm over it now, I'm done". And have only started the game once since then. That was just to check out the new systems in patch 2.0, take look at what the new kids on the block will experience while I play other games. I wen't a couple of rounds of crucible, just to check out rift and the new maps, and I got my ass kicked SO HARD. I actualy said to myself "I'm too old for this shit", I've been away a few months and It will take some time to build up my PvP skills again, and I just don't have the time and motivitaion to grind the crucible to the point were my KDs go from 0.3 to 1-2.5 to the occasional 5 or 6.
I'm over it, I thought, it was fun while it lasted, but my time in Destiny is done, I have done my part for the solar system and it's time for others to take my place. I have killed Crota, there are others that can take on his dad.
But man, when it all comes around it's hard as hell for an old guardien to hang up his cloak and put away his gun. Hunters are a restless bunch and we prefer to meet our demise out in the wild, not sit out the rest of our days i peace and boredom, alive but useless.
Fuck it, I have told myself not to, but I'm so fucking close to buy The Taken King and get back out there, kill that bastard Oryx and loot the shit out of his corpse. This video sums up the experience of playing Destiny in a way that people who have not spent hundreds of hours in this game can never understand. It's about the PEOPLE, the shared experiences, the creation of storys and anecdotes and memories that far surpasses anything the game itself is designed to create, or any game ever could be designed to create. The PEOPLE is what makes this game awesome, and it's the PEOPLE, new and old, that I can't let go of. Just when I thought I was out, it draws me back in, fuck it, If I had not watched this fucking video it would have been SO EASY.

Watching this in 2020 makes me sad, but not because of the memories. I’m sad because I didn’t start playing Destiny until earlier this year, and videos like this make me sad about everything I missed out on. It looked like an amazing experience, but sadly I’ll never get to play Destiny when it had its massive popularity and community.

I'm crying man. So many amazing fucking memories playing with my friends until 4 in the morning grinding raids, racing home from school every Tuesday to do the nightfall and hopefully get something good to show off. Waiting until all my friends were online to do the raid that night. Waking up hours before school to play updates. THE PEOPLE I met through the destiny app to do the raid were some of the best and worst people I've ever met. I'm still friends with people I met to do vault of glass back in the day. Finally finishing crotas end hard mode and almost breaking down. Talking about more than strats and cheeses, talking about school work and just life. If you didn't play destiny from the beginning of destiny one you will never understand what destiny truly is, more than a game a community.
