Just watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Came here to listen again. This mix really highlights the song so well. One of the songs and groups from my teens. Old lady now but still groovin’.
I personally think this is the "Best" Mamas and Papas song they ever recorded. Likewise, John you preformed a feat by enhancing this to make it even more enjoyable
It's my favorite too....soaring harmonies, excellent sound and arrangement, clean key of D major, open vocal fifths, powerful, powerful chorus. I think they were peaking here. Too bad they did/could not stay together. Only two years.
"California Dreaming" is not their best song. THIS is -- Phillips' psychedelic masterpiece. Your mix is interesting because it highlights the different components of the production.
Love the intro to "California Dreaming" but "Monday, Monday" is better to me. I can't agree to this tune being the best out of their repertoire but it is truly infectious!! It's one that I'll want to listen to the rest of my life.
I agree completely that this is their best song. (Though I do love California dreamin). It also complexly captures LA in that period. I moved here for the first time in 1973 and lived in the canyon / West Hollywood area
@@freewill1114 It's almost immediate, but I cry like a baby on certain lines in this song the feeling is so strong. I'm lucky to have heard it as a young teenager when it was first released knowing those beautiful girls then. I just saw one of them this sunny clear morning in Point Lobos. We passed by each other smiling, turned and looked at each other like we were in love and said Good Morning like we meant it and it hit me like a flash of light. We are older now, but still young and glad to have this music and its time as ours to savor. She was beautiful, sweet and kind and we shared that indescribable powerful good vibe this song has and those days were for a lovely few moments.
Thank you for this. One of the most talented vocalists who ever lived, paired with one of the most gorgeous women ever. They are eternal. Every time you listen, it sounds as fresh and invigorating as the first time that you heard it.
The daze of Laurel & Topanga Canyons..... The birthplace of some of the most influentual music that ever came out ot the USA..... Great remix. It's good to hear an extended version of those 2-3 minute songs we were fed for years.... ♥ it.
Thank you!! You have been able to isolate the unsung hero of this piece, which was Larry Knectel of the Wrecking Crew on the piano. The work he did here was just magnificent. He also played the piano on Bridge over Troubled Waters and later joined the soft rock group Bread. He was a man of many talents.
This is a great remix of a Great Song...Summer of Love and a wide eyed 13 yr old watching the whole damn world explode in self discovery!! Long live the Mamas & Papas!!
Wow, I love this! This song can never be long enough. I love the editing. Great job! I've been playing this song a lot over the past few days. I'm totally addicted. It was never played much on the radio.
Yes, it was, I have to disagree there. I remember that era so well. This song got enormous airplay. Though, true, not nearly as much as California Dreaming
So much a part of my earlier life, was this groups music, that it's hard to believe they're all gone now and except Michelle. She is keeper of the legacy, I guess.
This song couldn't be too long! My all time favorite M&P's tune. Your mix is very interesting. I put this in my "I can't play these songs just once.." playlist. Thanks a lot!
This is my favorite song and I always particularly enjoyed the piano portion. Nice job isolating it in parts of the song. Would have been great being in the studio when this was being recorded.
when a song reaches a high spiritual level as this one......well then you really got something lasting....because people are always want for more than life can give....songs like this help with moments of great beauty
This song was actually about cass watching young underage girls walking the "walk of shame" from Denny's house after a night of sex drugs and alcohol. What spiritual level are you referring to? Nothing spiritual about this song. It is beautifully sung but it is about everything that ISN'T spiritual. Blinds closed refers to cass pretending that Denny wasn't screwing underage teens while she had nothing but lonely nights wishing she was in his bed. Hate to bust your bubble but it was about anything spiritual. Far from it.
Excelentes y armónicas voces perfectamente acopladas hacen que se me ponga la piel de gallina cada vez que oigo este inmenso tema. Gracias Mamas & Papas por dejarnos tanta belleza.
Thanks for separating out the tracks in parts.....so cool. Many seem, like me, to think this is their most powerful and beautiful song. I am surely hooked. It's in D major too, with open fifths at times vocally...........two things I love.
I am a Finnish man, born in 1951. I recall those years of sixties when all branches of the pop/rock were actually developed in U.S.A. and GB. The Mamas and The Papas was really one of my favorites on the American folk-rock sector as well as Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds and The Buffalo Springfield. - Those were the days!
Wow! And wow again! John, this is a masterpiece of instruments and voices. You have made something that was already mystifying and beautiful even more beautiful and mystifying. It's symphonic. Thank you so much -- again :) John

a beautiful song that was an underrated and underplayed tune when first released…there is another version, found here on RUclips, when they performed it on the EdSullivan show…the M & P iconic in the California sound and fashion…Michelle w a long green granny dress of flowing silks…John w the meerkat hat….in that performance, when they come to the lyric, “…and in the morning I can see them walkin”, Michelle lifts her hand to her brow as if to gaze in the distance shielding her eyes from the sun. Very subtle, very simple gesture but timeless and beautiful…the musical tapestry of California captured magnificently…finally, another gem of the time and sort-of unofficially a M&P song was “San Francisco” song performed by Scott Mackenzie. (“be sure to wear some flowers in your hair”). I say unofficial, for that song was written by John Phillips…
To my experience this song matches my personal saga of moving from dark & dirty east coast (NYC) to shiny/friendly west coast (Laurel Canyon) in 1970 and finding it just fabulous, especially in comparison. To say good morning and really mean it. The weight of the east finally off my shoulders.
D. Ayers....I truly appreciate you filling me in on more of the background of this song than I knew. I knew it was the Wrecking Crew...but it's wonderful to put a name to that magnificent piano playing. And also on "Bridge Over Troubled Waters"....I do love that piano too! Thanks a lot

If you are going to make that claim, it would carry more weight if you were to mention how you know this to be absolutely true...
Interesting theory since it was written by John Phillips in 1965 shortly after they'd moved to LA- but don't let facts get in your way
It's John's song, not Cass's, so it's not inspired by wishing Denny was doing something else with his time. That's "I Saw Her Again Last Night."
