My fave M&P song. Even though it’s written to be somewhat ironic, I think it actually contains a sweet sentiment to it - it seems sympathetic to both parties. It’s unique in that I’ve never heard another song with a similar theme.
... and least perfect mistake -- I wanna LAY down and die. Lay what? I think everyone got messed up with "Now I LAY me down to sleep," which is OK because lay is transitive, although the reflexive myself should have been used there.
Denny Doherty came in 1 measure early at the direction of the recording engineer, who was doing a punch-in on the vocals. John Phillips and producer Lou Adler decided to leave it in as a false start. Also worked in "Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen.
@@benvye4279 I read that when they were putting it on tape they didn't rewind it all the way by mistake for another cut and that's the reason for the false start-I think that's more likely if you listen to the music as well-the whole thing starts again not just Denny
@@haroldrichardson8807 I think you're partially right. Supposedly Doherty did come in early and the recording engineer punched in the coda track for the vocals too early. He then tried to correct it but ultimately it ended up on the final mix. Lou Adler, the producer said he liked the effect and they decided to leave it on the track. By now of course it's iconic
The random photo @2.06 is actually Holly Willoughby. It's shown here by mistake as it was taken at the 30th Anniversary of the retail store "Mamas and Papas"!! (A bit like Mothercare) Someone didn't look too carefully when putting the clips together.
Watched a documentary on the mamas & papas yesterday. It stated that Cass proposed to Denny, but he was so drunk, he couldn’t give her an answer. I think they both loved each other.
How twisted must one be to write a song about your wife and friend having an affair, and then making them sing about it. And a hit song at that. Cass sounds especially good in this song, I think her anger and jealousy helped produce a brilliant performance.
I saw her again last night And you know that I shouldn't To string her along's just not right If I couldn't I wouldn't But what can I do, I'm lonely too And it makes me feel so good to know You'll never leave me I'm in way over my head Now she thinks that I love her Because that's what I said Though I never think of her But what can I do, I'm lonely too And it makes me feel so good to know You'll never leave me Every time I see that girl You know I want to lay down and die But I really need that girl Don't know why I'm livin' a lie It makes me want to cry I saw her again last night And you know that I shouldn't To string her along's just not right If I couldn't I wouldn't But what can I do, I'm lonely too And it makes me feel so good to know You'll never leave me But what can I do, I'm lonely too And it makes me feel so good to know You'll never leave me Every time I see that girl You know I want to lay down and die But I really need that girl Don't know why I'm livin' a lie It makes me want to cry I saw her again last night And you know that I shouldn't To string her along's just not right If I couldn't I wouldn't I'm in way over my head Now she thinks that I love her Because that's what I said
I started not to comment.........but I just can't let this pass, because this is freaking me out! At 00:30 what the hell is going on with Cass' arm?????????????
She is an English actress Emily atack related to Paul McCartney but why she is in there I don't know , she is only about 30 so wasn't even thought of in 1966 .?
Love the upbeat and inspirational feeling I derive from listening to a song about screwing your band mate's wife lol. You really can say anything in a song with superb harmonies and instrumentation... Springsteen comes to mind minus the harmonies when he sang- "Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack. I went out for a ride and I never went back". Sing it!🤣
Dysfunctional group yet when it comes to singing, they're superb.
couldn't agree more.
One of the world's best vocal work❤❤❤❤❤

TRUE TALENT.❤❤
Their very best! 😊
Fast, non stop brilliance with amazing back up from the rest of the group to the lead vocalist.
Heard this on the radio yesterday. Aged well. Looking at the album cover, hell, I owned it
"If I couldn't I wouldn't" is the essence of John
Brilliant track for real
Best folk group ever. Had a few drinks with John in Las Vegas once. Great to talk with, but an odd guy.
Odd... whats your definition of odd?
Caramba!!!,adorei isso é lindo de ouvir. Eu esse tipo de música com muita vozes e instrumentos musicais. Eu não a conhecia adoreeei ❤🎉🎉🎉gratidão
Great song
Oh what a criminal lie It makes me want to cry
@gordonsargon9167 Oh, I’m living a lie, it make me want to cry
I love this song! It contains the most perfect mistake at 2:43.

I love the false start towards the end - and the fact that they left that in! Or is it a false false-start?
Michelle stated in the documentary that Denny singing ‘I saw her…’ was indeed a false start, but they decided to leave it in.
@@HelenGillespie-m7fIt’s very human and humble 🙏
I see John has the brim of the hat up on the correct side this time at 0:35
that song for her

I think a group called ABBA did something similar!!!!
Drew - I'm glad someone said it.
It's all very strange. But I love the songs! 🤷♀️
Fleetwood Mac made a career out of that.
I thought the two guys wrote the song together. That's what Wikipedia says, anyway.
I saw her again last night
And you know that I shouldn't
To string her along's just not right
If I couldn't I wouldn't
But what can I do, I'm lonely too
And it makes me feel so good to know
You'll never leave me

Because that's what I said
Though I never think of her
But what can I do, I'm lonely too
And it makes me feel so good to know
You'll never leave me
Every time I see that girl
You know I want to lay down and die
But I really need that girl
Don't know why I'm livin' a lie
It makes me want to cry
I saw her again last night
And you know that I shouldn't
To string her along's just not right
If I couldn't I wouldn't
But what can I do, I'm lonely too

John Phiĺips was the greatest composer, writer, arranger of the second half of the 20th century. Period
MMmmm... no.
Great song, and great bunch of photos. However, curious as to why there is a photo of Holly Willoughby at 2:05. Does anyone know?
Anybody who saw them play live, please leave a message, Thanks

who the heck is that @2:06? and what does she have to do with the song and/or Ms&Ps?
She is an English actress Emily atack related to Paul McCartney but why she is in there I don't know , she is only about 30 so wasn't even thought of in 1966 .?
Donna Green ...that was Jill Gibson who temporarily replaced Michelle. The photo in this video is definitely not her.
@@raymondbonington9355 No it's not, It's a young Holly Willoughby but I don't have a clue why she's there...

John wrote this song about Denny and Michelle’s affair. Great song though
john wrote this after finding out about michelles affair with denny.so michelle had to sing her husbands song about her cheating.
yikes that whole time mustve sucked for everyone involved
Sounds more like from Denny to Cass to me...
I don't care what Denny said. I think he really did love Cass but his pride wouldn't let him admit it. He could have had it all.
Why is it that all the greatest songs are sung by people who die early in life? They just seem to burn up too fast.
She shouldn't have cheated
Similar to Fleetwood Mac; the beautiful girl, the drugs, the affairs
he talking about michlle cheating on him with the other singer guy
It’s actually him singing about him cheating with Michelle. John wrote it and made Denny sing it as punishment.
