    I would not mess with the feeler gage and the electrodes as they have pointed ends. inserting a blade can do more harm than good. The plug comes with the right gap so one can just use it as is.

  • @jmose1911

    NGK Iridium IX - DCPR8EIX plugs, there is only one electrode strap and the center electrode is Iridium and much finer than the NGK plugs you recommend. Supposedly higher performance? I am very new to BMW, recently purchased a high mileage police bike, '07 R1200RT-P. Quite the learning experience thus far! Thanks TOM, someday hope to take a ride through all the Netherlands, having grown up listening to my Grandmother Houghtaling's stories.

    You say that the sparkplugs need to be lubed with anti-seize but it makes the thread greasy and that will be of influence of the torque settings....?

    Hi again Old Mechanic, quick question, I recently remove my main plugs to check as it is running rough and found out there's a bit of oil on the tip of the plugs(the tip connected to the ignition coil not on the side doing the spark)..I wonder what does that tell.. So, I just clean the plugs with contact cleaner and a bit of very fine sandpaper. Now the bike is running good and smoother.. It works but should I be worried or check something else.. I would love to hear your thoughts and insight.. Thanks in advance and as usual awesome tutorial...

    • @TheOldMechanic

      Hi Virdi, when you take off the valve cover you will see 2 rubber seals. The outer large one, and the rubber round seal for the sparkplug shaft, I think that, that one is leaking. Greets from The Old Mechanic.😉🏍

    Hello old mechanic. You tighten the spark plugs to 12Nm, in the book I have from the BMW R1200GS it says that it is tightened to 25Nm. What do you think about this, I'm a little confused because I don't know what is right. My GS is a 2009. Otherwise, I like your videos.

    You have to remove part of the engine guard and some other parts just for putting out the plug. I think the manufacturer needs some contrivance here.

    Hi Old Mechanic, thanks for your video. Do you not feel that putting assembly lube on the plug threads affects the torque achieved as specified torques usually assume dry threads?

    • @fabiopunk1661
      @fabiopunk1661 2 года назад +3

      I have been using a dab of copper grease on new spark plugs in the last 50 years and always tighten by hand. Never had a problem nor stripped threads. I suggest you do not tighten the plugs too much this is what people usually do

    • @kc329191
      @kc329191 Год назад +1

      My opinion is that yes it does mess with Torquing going on. But the benefits of one Torquing in the first place is Good most people go by feel (Never Good)
      Secondly, like Old Mechanic said you never will have problems.
      I personally will do this from now on because It is methodical and is a good reminder to always use a Torque wrench. The little possibility of over torque using anti seize it outweighed by the benefits. My opinion only.

    Not ez cuz you gotta R&R that engine guard every 12,000. I say PITA. Resolution: get an Ilium engine guard. Although Ilium quality i'm disappointed with as mine has rusty pits all over it in only 24 months.

    • @TheOldMechanic

      Hi Kevin you are so right, mine started to rust after about 2 to 3 years. I contacted Hepco & Becker about it and the only thing they could do was giving me a discount of 75 euro's on a new engine guard...
