I own a Hi-Point .45, and I have to say that despite literally never cleaning the thing (no ability to field-strip without tools is the primary downfall and why I'll never use it as a carry gun) and putting about 800 rounds through it, it still functions just as well as the day I got it. I will say, for a gun to keep on the nightstand they're not terrible, especially given the price point. Yes, you can save up for a better gun like many suggest, but at the same rate you can purchase a Hi-Point on nearly any budget to have something around for defense, and then proceed to save for a better gun. I can honestly say I'd trust my life to my Hi-Point, and the cool thing is if you run out of ammo, you can throw the thing. I do have to admit I have in fact used it as a hammer before as well.
See i like you, you understand hi-point is relatively ass, but you also see the good side of it and recommend it for people on a low budget as a self defense tool for the meantime 💯 you a real one fr
The fact you use a high point as a bump in the night gun is pretty ballsy, almost as good as a .22 revolver grandpa

I bought a Hi Point as a novelty and have fun with it at the range. Unlike many, I clean it every time I shoot it, so I have some familiarity with its internals. There are several stamped sheet metal linkage components inside the grips which make the weapon fire. Those can come loose from their connection points if the grips are loosened.
I imagine that the C9's failure came from those linkage components coming loose inside the grips
I did the same thing, I use my C9 at the range I enjoy it for that. My main shooter is a Smith and Wesson model 64 revolver so the weight doesn't bother me

Actually, the C9 (to HiPoint's credit) comes with two-tone sights and the rear sights are windage and elevation adjustable. Glock...not so much. Granted, everything else on the lowpoint is crap. Having said that, which gun would you prefer to use in a drive-by (with filed serial markings, of course) and throw in a canal? As such, HiPoints do serve a purpose.
The dust test was interesting. The Hi-Point was more successful with a first shot, but the Glock was more reliable with follow-ups.
If you ask Wyatt Earp, the first shot is the most important.

I think your intended use matters a lot, as well as if you like shooting and are proficient. If you want to train up and be ready for most scenarios the Glock is a better choice (as well as if you're a proficient shooter) due to the reliability and comfort in using them. However if you're just looking for a gun for self defence in your car/home a hi-point is way more affordable and is good for that purpose (as long as you get some training!)

As someone who at one time owned a .40 Glock, and still owns the Hi-Point .40 the only 2 grips I ever had was the retaining pin for take down cleaning on the Hi-Point, and the Hi-Point only having a 10 round magazine. Got around the cleaning (former tool & die guy) buy using a shop vac tube and a modified cleaning brush for a John Deere cotton picker. Shortened the brush to about 4" overall length, bent 1" short side, 3" long side. Opened the slide, use the shop vac with the brush and it cleaned an pulled any debris in about 6 seconds, oiled, reloaded, and ready for use, the same set up works for the 9mm an .45 models I clean for friends. And the extra rounds in the magazine department, in a "save your life" encounter just how many rounds do you think you really will get off, 10 or less is about all you'l get the chance for as the bad guys always attacks when it best for them ... not you.
