    I’m gonna miss the old 40 second rainmaker matches, but chilling with a charger or roller by checkpoints is gonna be fun

    Determining how many points an individual clam will award is critical and I hope Nintendo does a good job balancing it. Lowering an individual clam's points from 3 to 2 sounds reasonable, but then the flip side becomes "Why score 14 points with 7 small clams when you can score 20 points with 8?" From that perspective, keeping the point-per-clam count at 3 makes sense to incentivize scoring 21 points with 7 clams. Hopefully Nintendo is able to strike a nice balance.

      I mean honestly even with 7 clams giving 21, I'd much rather use a power clam to net an instant 20. Even in splat 2 where you can net 27 off 9 clams resulting in up to a massive 98 points off one team batch, putting you one clam from a win, a power clam just offers way too much additional flexibility to pass up. It lets you lead a push by allowing you to break the barrier, drastically shortens the time you need to spend scoring, and protects your gathered clams from being reclaimed by the opponent while allowing your own team to recover all of them. Scoring clams the long way was already very situational in solo gameplay, and this only makes that more pronounced (not that I feel it's exactly problematic design either...)

      @@engiopdf8745 This is all true and is what will likely happen in solo play, not that I would expect much different. I brought this up since lowering the individual clams to 2 points each would streamline the mode a little too much to where there is no reason to throw in individual clams regardless of what type of environment the mode is played in. The difference between 14 and 20 is just too much. While individual clams may still not be thrown in much in soloQ, it still adds another layer of depth to a coordinated team setting, which is where the mode was fundamentally designed to be played.

      @@engiopdf8745 A power clam breaking the basket isn't exactly flexibility as it's just a game rule. Smaller clams also don't reveal your location and can be sent slowly to keep the enemy basket open for as long as possible.

    You have no idea what this means for low ranks. I still have a vivid memory of my first rainmaker match. I took it back to my home podium, did not understand what "don't retreat" meant, and subsequently exploded.
    I was very much not confused at all.

    When clam blitz came out, I wasn’t sure about it. Cause like you said, everyone would just do their own thing and it would make me mad. But adding more d pad opinion would really have clam blitz be my favorite mode.

      Stuff like ''I need clams'' and ''I'm at their goal'' would be perfect. Sharing clams is so important but people don't pay attention to clam count so don't give you any. So if you could tell them you need clams, they'll realize you're close to a football and give you some. And people camp at the other teams goal so someone with a football can spawn in and throw it in without getting splatted so it's a good idea to make it so you're able to tell them you're there. Because ''This way'' isn't really that accurate as so many people spam it

      @@NobodyUndefined these seem a little long winded, I actually think the best prompt would be to bring back "To me" from Splat 1. It could have two meanings, if someone is one or two clams away from the power clam and they say "To me" then it clearly means to pass clams to them. If they are next to the basket and say "To me" it means to jump to them. It's honestly perfect imo.

      @@NobodyUndefined oh I am aware, but this is Nintendo we're talking about, I'm trying to be realistic. Obviously something specific is better, but I very highly doubt we'll get that with a company so out of touch. I still think long messages aren't the best, do the ideal situation for me is to get prompts like "Pass" and "Defend" but I know that's just not as likely to happen

      @@ACriticalHit hi! In Splatoon 2 when you collect 10 clams it turns into a football, and you have to throw it at the enemy goal to open it, in splat 3 it only takes 8 clams to do this

    Yeah, the checkpoint thing is nice, I was playing some rainmaker just last night, and me and my teammates were all crowded around the open rainmaker going "well I'm not gonna pick it up." Good to know that won't happen anymore.

    Imo, clam blitz is hurt the most by not having more d-pad options. In splat 2 it’s my most hated mode solely because of brain dead teammates in solo. Even just having one more option like “Pass Clams!” would do wonders for it. The changes they added are nice but I’m still hesitant, just have to wait and see I guess

      They really need to add more d-pad commands but it looks like it's not happening, maybe they are afraid it will get spammed too much in matches but big mistake if it's not in 3.

      What I'd really like to see on top of this is a ping feature, similar to what CS:GO has.
      For those who are unfamiliar, if you point at something on the map and middle-click with your mouse, a small circle of light will appear with a subtle beep sound.
      This would be incredibly useful in Splatoon given that the lack of voice chat makes it impossible to direct teammates when something major happens in a match (like if you spot the enemy team trying for a push).

    I also LOVE clam blitz and find it so sad that barely anyone else does. I'm so glad they didn't just get rid of it because that was my biggest fear for splat 3 as tons of people asked for it to be removed. It's so cool that they decided to actually make it better instead of ditching it or just making an exact copy

    I noticed the checkpoints immediately during the direct, and I was immediately on board with it. If the rainmaker just spawns at a checkpoint when the holder dies, that could be a problem unless it spawns at the nearest one the team has taken, considering the space between the two checkpoints in one of the clips.
    Clam Blitz could definitely use more of an explanation. I went through hours and hours of this game without even knowing how to throw a clam. As someone who is B+ for this mode (because I hate it) now I just have dumb teammates who waste their specials and don’t support pushes. I had to solo score the other day, and we still lost. I just want to get to A-!
    Please help, Nintendo.

    My main problem with Rainmaker was always that it felt the most mindless out of all the modes. Every game of it just boiled down to "grab Rainmaker, shoot at the enemy team with Rainmaker, move forward until you reach the goal" with barely any team play or strategy.
    Checkpoints immediately fix by forcing teams to plan where they carry the Rainmaker more and act as a natural choke point, making it harder to sneak around and win the match in a minute.

    We are definitely going to have a Metalworks RM match where one team overcommits too hard to defending right so the other team just uses Tacticooler and takes the grates and it will be funny

    Something potentially interesting is that if rainmaker is going to have checkpoints, some of the more linear maps such as Inkblot may be forced into a rework to accommodate for this which could be very good. We haven’t seen much of the Splatoon 2 maps at all aside from sturgeon and a bit of wahoo, so if we’re lucky the more problematic ones might be in store for a rework.

    One small change I like a lot is the animation the top of the screen does when a player gets splatted on the enemy team. The quick cross out effect is large enough and can draw slight attention so that the players in the game can be more aware of how many enemies are down. This may help those weird moments when your team decides to not push at all despite the enemy being down 3.

    Another change about Clam Blitz: The open basket has (an admittedly loud) jingle not unlike the Tower does when it's being ridden. The jingles are also slightly different depending on whether it's the Alpha team or Bravo team basket.

    Love the checkpoint system, i'm mostly curious about clam placement and clusters and if "clam economy" is gonna be a thing still or if they'll make a bigger effort to randomize spawns (especially during the time a basket is open)

    I’ve had an Idea for calls to add for a while now. Namely, adding “help!” From salmon run and a “watch out!” That can also be said after death.

    I'm glad to see Rainmaker and Clam Blitz getting some positive changes (I really like both modes) and Tower Control I don't really think needed any other than better paths on certain maps or better yet no bad maps (thank everything that New Albacore Hotel and Camp Triggerfish are supposedly not coming back), but there's one mode I haven't mentioned: Splat Zones. I really hate Splat Zones and I don't know how it could be fixed but I feel like it needs to be. I mean, it's possible that there actually have been changes, one definitely has happened and that's the respawn changing so spawn camping is harder to do, but the other change we aren't sure on yet and that's that I believe that there should not be any map whatsoever with two zones. If a two zone map is on rotation, I straight up just don't play. I hate them so much. But I don't really know if that would be enough to fix Splat Zones in my opinion. I'd be interested to hear what you think about how Tower Control and Splat Zones will function in this game

    Rainmaker has always been my favorite mode, and I am really glad they are making it even better. Checkpoints are gonna add a lot. As for Clams, the changes I can tell are gonna go a long way in making the mode better. Unfortunately I don’t see more communication options happening, but you can’t win em all you know.

    Your comment on tutorialization is so on-point. CB really needs a full tutorial because it's just so wildly different. Loading screen reminders could be great too, both for UI tips like how to pass clams and for general strategy advice like a reminder that scoring gives your opponents a pity clam so it's not always a great idea. Low ranks are full of one-football "pushes".
    One thing you didn't mention with the change to 8 clams per football is that (depending on the points per clam) it changes the tradeoffs between small and power clams when the basket is open. Right now, 9 small clams scores 7 more points than a power, so you lose a lot of scoring potential when you finish the football. If they leave small clams at 3, then picking up the last clam would only cost you one point, which would make pushes with 3 or 4 power clams more attractive.
    As for other modes, I'd love to see OT for tower control be a little less punishing and matchup dependent. It's basically impossible to win TC OT against a booyah for instance. Maybe make it so that the tower has to be pushed back at least 10 points if it's on the winning team's side or something. It'd also be nice if they fully explained the OT rules, since understanding them well carries a huge advantage like how you often want to delay RM splats or small clam throws near the buzzer to prevent OT.

    Tbh I really would like more communication for clam blitz seeing as its my second favorite mode next to salmon run.
    I would love a “Pass to me” and “head to the goal\protect the goal” option.

    As someone who has been on many teams who push so hard we win in 30 seconds and loses in 30 seconds in a snap, these changes should add more strategy and more gameplay in these modes

    Another thing…. I know it’s highly unlikely but, what if there’s the potential that the rainmaker may actually have a special ability in the third game? It’s almost certain that it’s purely decorative, taking up the special slot, but it’d be really cool if it had some kind of special maybe to break through stalemates

    I think the change for rainmaker is a good one however, I'm not a big fan of changing the amount of clams needed to 8 as there will probably end up being too many footballs (idk what they are called, power clams? Idk) in play at a time and I think it could encourage even less teamwork. I think they need to add more d-pad options for the mode to be improved tbh.

    One of my hopes for 3 is during the single player mode they do something similar to what Octo Expansion did with the stations where you played a 1v5 ranked mode but instead basically teaching people how each mode is played this would help out a lot with newer players understanding the mode if the single player npcs are telling you how the mode works over a wall of text you aren't even forced to see.

    I think they should add callouts exclusive to certain game modes (clam blitz being like “give me clams!” And rainmaker being “I’ll take the rainmaker!” And splat zones being like “Ill protect the zone”

    What if the checkpoints on rainmaker made the rainmaker respawn at that checkpoint whenever it gets reset. The spawn location won’t change until another checkpoint is reached, it gets carried through mid by the enemy, or the enemy dunks it on a checkpoint.

    Honestly the extra D-pad input idea would work better as long as there's a "help" button. One input with so much utility. I mean, it would obviously be practical to complete the D-pad and add another option (i.e. one unique to each mode), but solo cue would be far better with a distress button.
    Also, as I've been getting back into Splat 2 to prepare for 3, I've been watching a lot of your content from the past year, and gotta say I love your vids since the analytical ones are rarely based around opinions and gameplay just has so much standout energy other content creators don't have.
    You deserve this sub Chara, and good luck in Splat 3!

    clam blitz desperately needs a way to communicate when to pass clams esp in solo queue. so many games with team wipes that lead to no pushes because all the clams are too spread out between players who dont know to pass clams.

    I just hope they do something to Splat Zones.
    It's been my least favourite mode for YEARS now. it's incredibly unbalanced and unfair. not to mention boring.
    A single squad wipe can cost you the game since by the time you respawn they've already inked a lot of middle and got more control. Double zones are really annoying to constantly go back and forth from and a lot of it is waiting. The penalty system barely works and just makes the game even less enjoyable.
    I Really hope they do something about this in splatoon 3. or I might just give up on the mode all together.

    I think rainmaker definitely got the best upgrade since it’s definitely stressful so you won’t get splated just to stay at the same spot but it will still happen in splat3 but at least it transports to the checkpoints if you fell off the stage. That players will get an edge if there closer while opponents will have troubles of sorts but if they play there card they can get to the checkpoint as well

    I wonder if the checkpoints in Rainmaker will also address the suicide move players do when they have the Rainmaker to get it back to the center of the stage. I found it to be a cheap tactic to get it away from your base so I wonder if instead of respawning at the center, the Rainmaker will respawn at the nearest checkpoint.

    Rainmaker having checkpoints is great, i hate rainmaker in maps with death pits bc you'll get the rainmaker SO CLOSE but someone from the enemy team will grab it and then jump off the edge to reset it. Atleast with checkpoints it'll make it so you don't have to do one big push and instead can be alot of smaller pushes. Great change

    I think the most annoying thing about Clam Blitz is people super jumping near the basket and scoring with the super clam before you can do anything. Maybe super jumping with a super clam should break it into smaller ones when you land.

    Rainmaker has always been my favourite mode by a mile and these changes, plus the existence OF TACTICOOLER DYNAMO??? Is going to make this soooo fun for me~

    Not really related to this video but what do you think the effect of Special Power Up will be on all the specials? I imagine most if not all of the returning specials will have the same effect, bigger Inkstorm, longer Ink Jet so on and so forth but for the new ones it's something to think about, I think it'll be something like this:
    Tacticooler: HP increase, we know the Tacticooler can be used as a shield and increasing the buff strength or duration seems a bit too good.
    Reefslider: Either a bigger explosion or a longer distance moved, probably the former.
    Zipcaster: Longer reach or longer duration.
    Crab Tank: Longer duration.
    Triple Inkstrike: Better painting or longer throwing range.
    Tri-Zooka: Unsure maybe a longer duration as it does have a time limit on how long you have it.
    Big Bubbler: More HP or longer duration.
    Ink-Vac: Unsure but perhaps an easier charge for the attack at the end meaning you don't need to suck up as much ink for maximum power.
    Killer Wail 5.1: Bigger targeting area or faster moving beams.
    Wave Breaker: Probably the hardest to figure out as there's several possibilities either a larger radius, more damage or a longer duration.
    I don't think any of these effects should be to extreme but I hope the effects of Special Power Up on the new special weapons are more unique and specific to each special weapon.

    i've always hated clams, every time i comes on rotation i always angerly go play terf war until it switches to something else. but with these changes i'll definitely give it a shot in 3, can't say i'll change my mind tho lol

    Man, it took me FOREVER to figure out what the hell I was doing in clam blitz
    Still a little confused honestly
    I think I'd put it on the same level as tower control, where I CAN have fun with it, just most of the time I'd rather play a different mode
    Love rainmaker though. New checkpoints seem fun

    I feel as though the clams changes are gonna need actual play time before anyone can fully say if they are good or bad, though the speculation given does seem accurate to simplifying the gameplay down and making it easier to understand. The swapping of clams to power clam ration makes it so that (provided clam spawns per area are unchanged) it only takes two clusters to get a power clam. This can be good as it means that you aren’t scrounging around looking for that last clam to make the winning football, but also could lead to one guy getting set up in the back waiting for the enemy clam spawns to reset and doing a little trolling (making a power clam and scoring during a stalemate). Even so, I feel as though the UI would help serve as a counter along with the map feature in general as one check can stop this, so It’ll be interesting to see how the mode evolves in both solo and coordinated play because of these changes.

    I gotta say I really want a way for the team to understand my frustration during salmon run instead of just spamming "this way" and "help". Sometimes my teammates just dont get the hint i'm not able to fill the egg basket at the moment

    Yknow as long as the rainmaker checkpoints arent like 2 meters from each other im fine with it.

      That’s true if the checkpoints are super close then it will be to easy and there will be no point there needs to be distance in between the checkpoints

    The only mode that I dislike is Clam Blitz because at low ranks nobody is coordinated. But it looks like they are trying to fix my gripes with the mode so I may play it more

    I'm just happy there's a more casual way of playing these modes than Ranked felt in S2...
    ...Yeah Salmon Run felt like my most played mode back when I was playing 2 (I think it will still be in 3 despite sometimes playing Salmon Run when I was planning on playing something else because it happened to be in rotation, and knowing how easily I can get hooked into card based minigames, because I'm already planning on getting back to working everyone's favourite awful dodgy job as soon as I've played enough Hero Mode to feel like I've familiarized myself with the game's controls and gotten used to the new movement options)

    If the call outs were like rocket league so that you could have slight customization (being able to change “this way” to “over here”), or being able to use the other 2 dpad buttons for other commands (a “retreat!” would be nice), that would be amazing! Still, probably won’t fix the dumb teammates that end up throwing the power clam at the enemy for no reason (Even in S+...)

    I was honestly looking forward to a couple new ranked mode. Im still hyped for the game launch but I feel like they could have gone a lot further especially with 5 years of development time.

    The only way to save clam blitz would be to allow voice communication. Right now it's a shit show because so many people don't get it and don't work together, their changes don't fix the fact that it is completely coordination dependant and there is no way to communicate other than the "this way" and booyah.

    How good do you think big bubbler will be in rainmaker? It's a good way to stop the rainmaker from getting picked off while waiting for teammates lagging behind but someone else has to use it and the bubble is stationary so I don't really know.

    In my opinion, I think these are essentially good, for both casual and competitive. With checkpoints in Rainmaker, rounds are thankfully less faster and with ray gone, players don't need to worry about the deadly lazer-although I did enjoy using the special, it's for the best.
    For Clam Blitz, I love the UI showing the number of clams people have. It's also nice to only require 8 clams for a power clam, but I do agree that points be 3 -> 2, if not, pushes are more devastating.
    Anyways, keep doing a good work on providing your content. 👍

    Honestly, I was just hoping for a new ranked mode at the very least? Something that gives me more of a feeling that this isn't Splatoon 2+ Maybe some kind of hide and seek mode since it's a popular fanmade game but have some added gimmicks to help it stand out. But I'm happy with the new rainmaker changes, it felt so awful to hold it before. This way the rainmaker holder can take a break to plan out things or even have different teammates constantly switching at checkpoints with them!

    I always found rainmaker impossible to get anywhere with unless the team was really good together. I'm glad there are changes to it, and hopefully it will be more fun to play. Splat Zones has always been my favourite since the first time I played it, but I'd like to get into the others more.

    Clam Blitz will probably be harmed a bit by Zipliner unless you drop all clams on activation since you can just zip to the goal thus ending games a lot faster than in S2. So the clams giving 2 points instrad of 3 may be needed.

    I don't know if anyone notice but in the hero mode when agent 3 had the sniper in one the direct clips I seen something red glowing under her ink tank is it gonna detonate when you fail the challenge like Octo expansion?

    0:02 I think they made the rainmaker dunking animation longer/slower with the rainmaker jumping slightly higher during it. This would make stopping the rain from reaching a checkpoint/the goal MUCH easier - especially since it sometimes feels impossible to cancel it even with an entire team shooting the rainmaker.

      I mean... the point is you stop them before that. The carrier can't reach it without the goal already being inked. Turning a rainmaker win into landing splashdown would be horrible.

    On the subject of the Sting Ray, it feels like they'll just return it in an update since the Stinger salmonid came back anyway, although i guess it could be balanced out by nerfing thermal ink to only work in close proximity and not across the whole field
