  • ► Even though it may be tucked away out of sight, your vacuum pump on the N14 engine is an essential part of keeping your engine running healthy. A failed vacuum pump can seize up and cause carnage within the engine block, as shown here by our own resident MINI addict and digital content producer, Ben Marouski. We're back with another video to take you through some of the failure symptoms, diagnosis tips and overall highlights of this MINI N14 Vacuum Pump replacement.

    *note, it was mentioned it's 3 bolts to take off the Vacuum pump (that is to un-assemble it), it is instead only 2 bolts to remove it from the cylinder head!

    Hi I have 283D,288D, 2870, 2891 code on a 1.6 cooper from 2007, both vanos have been changed but still the issue only when motor is hot, then the car is vibrating when the fault indicator appears,
    when motor is cold there is no problem, please any advice ?
    Thank you

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  4 года назад

      So you swapped out the VANOS solenoid? Have you tried the Vac pump replacement as that can cause VANOS/timing related codes before its too late. The temperature fluctuation could just have to do with it being in cold start vs not cold start so once its at actual idle it begins to go out of time since its not receiving cold start throttle. Its rare but something could also be wrong with the VANOS sprocket found on the intake side.

    • @Stryk1x
      @Stryk1x 4 года назад

      @@fcpeuro Thanks for your response,
      Indeed I swapped both VANOS (inlet and Exhaust side) but the issue is still there,
      So i'm getting those errors :
      283D - VANOS Exhaust Adaption Stop
      288D - Exhaust camshaft to crankshaft correlation
      2870 - VANOS inlet, flank adaption - permanent
      2891 - Inlet camshaft to crankshaft correlation
      The car is from 2007, so 13 years old, it have 147.000Km, it have been maintained normally, oil changed at the right km etc ...
      When the engine is hot (after several km the engine reach is normal temperature) the fault light appears then the car is getting rough, like vibration and power loss. If I turn off the engine it disappears and then it appears again.
      When the car is cold there is nothing, no noise, it is running correctly.
      I saw that it could be the Vaccum pump as you notice,
      I have some question like : why it could not be the distribution chain and the tensioner ? or an air leak ? or the wastegate on the turbocompressor ?
      How can i diagnostic the vaccum pumps without vaccum gauge
      Thanks a lot for your help

      Hey Xscalab 44 , lucky for your they upgraded the vacuum pump on the N18 along with the HPFP, so lucky for you it should not be an issue. Its not super rare to have one still fail on occasion, as it functions similarly to the N14, just keep an eye on the gasket (could replace just this), and be aware of any out of the ordinary noises coming from it.

    The car allready consumed 2 litres of aditional oil and i have changed the oil before 8 months ( 8k kilometers)
    P.s i have a MINI R56 1.6 88kw

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  4 года назад

      Hi B. Dolic, well it sounds like you're having a grand old time with your N14 R56....We would start by replacing the o2 sensor and Map sensor since those are easy to do and you have the parts already. Remove the vacuum pump and inspect it, some noise/rattle is to be expected but excessive play/rubbing OR sticking when spinning the pump is not a good sign and could be symptoms of inevitable failure. It sounds like from the oil your'e seeing it is having an issue sealing to the head of your engine, which is in turn possibly starving the pump from getting proper lubrication (you can replace just the seal as well). Failure of the vacuum pump can be detrimental as mentioned in the video so it may be worth preemptively replacing it regardless. Oil consumption is fairly standard on these n14 engines so without knowing your mileage and how far you are driving in the 8months since the last oil change it is difficult to say for sure whats "normal or not". We suggest having a trained professional inspect your AC system as it can be dangerous to work with and expensive with all the necessary tools (it is likely a leak somewhere in your system).

    Hi there! I have this same car, and my issue was that I heard a harsh knocking sound coming from the vacuum pump (almost like a hammering). I took off my pump (lots of oil came out, is that normal?) and I noticed some scoring on the inside of the vacuum chamber cover, but nothing seemed broken. When the cover is off, I am able to move the shaft back and forth, and in the non normal position it will lock. Also, the part that should have some play (the part that connects to the camshaft) can go left and right, as well as up and down on the shaft, is that normal?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  4 года назад +2

      The hammering sound is not normal, a small tick is what MINI says to not worry about. Scoring should not be there, that means its running dry and starting to likely fail. The movement in the part that attaches to the cam is normal as you can sort of see in this video as well. Not sure which part you're referring to in regards to the shaft though. How many miles on the car?

Patrick reminder me that their parts are not o.e.m but FCP Euro advertise their parts as being just as good quality. Honestly I saved about 150 dollars not buying from BMW but at the end it will cost me more cause now I have to rent a car while I ship, receive, and replace the new part then hope it last more than 6 months. In conclusion pay more buy OEM at the long run it will be cheaper.

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  4 года назад

      It wouldn't spin at all with a gauge on it since it was completely locked which again causes the actual failure. The goal was not show how much vacuum the pump was or wasn't generating but instead testing if its locked or has noticeable grinding. Hooking a gauge up would have been a good idea though to see if there was any difference between the old (working) and new on a car.
